That show I linked to yesterday and how I know it exists:
About two years ago, five Canadians and I accidentally spent Thanksgiving (Canadian version) at FOB Delaram. It used to be a Soviet base, and there's a tower they built that we spent a good part of the night in, instead of the beds that had been scrounged up for us. Why? Because someone had vodka, and where else do you drink vodka?
Things that had also been scrounged for my edification: pasta with cheese and gravy (chips were unavailable), small packets of fake maple syrup that got mixed with the vodka after we'd drunk enough to think that was a good idea (it wasn't), and fossilised nanaimo bars from someone's mum. The pasta was actually not bad. I liked it better than poutine. You may all make horrified faces at me now.
And someone had Corner Gas on a USB drive. I have very hazy memories of watching most of series one that night, passing the USB drive from laptop to laptop as batteries surrendered under the onslaught of Brent being hilarious, Wanda being frighteningly smart, and Hank being...Hank. It was quite an experience.
The next day they went on their way, and I went on to Bastion, and googled Corner Gas. It was conveniently on youtube, and a good thing too, because I don't think they ever made region 2 DVDs of it. There you go. Happy belated Thanksgiving, Canada.

Sometimes I feel a bit jealous of your boy's-own adventures, you know? Even though I know I'd've been crap at the whole army thing, I wish I had the experiences you do.
But hearing you talk about them is nearly as good :)
How did you "accidentally" end up at a FOB? Were camels involved? My favorite part of deploying was working with the coalition guys. So many unexpected joys!
(thanks for answering)
DW! Congrats on your stuff appearing our of the other side of the wormhole it had fallen into. :)
In other news, how have I not heard of Corner Gas until now? As I said to L the other day, these blogs are mighty educational.
Clearly, this calls for a viewing.
Alas, I have been at the dentist (look Ma, no cavities!) and then first waiting forever at an Apple Genius Bar, and then on the phone forever with Apple Tech Support. They still have not figured out why my almost brand new iPod Touch suddenly stopped syncing wirelessly with my iMac. (I NEED them actively on the same network, my whole life is on an app that can only sync wirelessly!)
Any disjointedness in my comments today is Apple's fault. (That makes a change--not John's fault and not Lestrade's fault... :D)
Thanks, Calliope. I'm saddened, though, because my favorite book didn't make it through unscathed. Such is the way of things, I guess. I blame John's "crevasse" comment...
Uh...on second reading my last comment sounds ridiculously ungrateful for my good fortune. Just ignore everything after "Thanks, Calliope" please.
<3
DW It's still a heartbreak to lose a good book, even though we're all glad to hear you finally have your belongings back. I also second your question -- How does one "accidentally" end up at a base?
Perhaps it was an offering to the moving Gods (or equiv.)?
Lol. That's my new explanation in any case, Calliope.
Either that or the alien furniture eats books - I'd keep a close eye on them for the next few days.
As long as I don't end up with a copy of "To Serve Man," I think I'll be alright. Sleepless thanks to Rider and SH, but alright.
Lestrade, have you been messing with the Captcha again? I just got "hornied."
Ha! Nothing to do with me.
Probably your sentient furniture.
If monsters hide in wardrobes and under beds, where do monster wardrobes amd beds hide? Or do they just rely on hiding in plain sight...
DW and Anon - I wish there were camels involved. Can I make up something with camels instead? No, our ride got highjacked by someone more important than us at the last minute.
And DW, I'm sorry to hear about your favourite book. That's a sad thing.
Condolences on your book, DW--you can replace it, of course, but it's not the same.
I would very much like to see you make up a camel story, Doc. I'm sure it'd be hilarious.
The best way to suss out Canadians is, without a doubt, to mention pop culture or similar from Canada. I remember that a Stephen Colbert sketch on the loonie was actually reported on CBC news. We like being noticed!
To whomever it was on the last post (maybe DW?) who asked what else we'd been hiding up north, /Due South/ is another great Canadian show, though one admittedly better known in the States. Mountie in Chicago. :) No links since I'm on my phone, but worth a look.
I loved Due South (the first two seasons especially)! Also, Kids in the Hall, which I think is Canadian?
*bounces excitedly* Oh my gosh, due South! And Slings and Arrows! I liiiike Paul Gross (still have not seen Gunless, to my great dismay). And nanaimo bars are excellent when fresh, though I imagine fossilization does not improve them. I'll have to find "Corner Gas." I certainly enjoyed "Cabin Pressure" after its recommendation here.
Not actually a Canadian, but I went there for grad school.
