song about nothing, song about sheep

I had things to post about, but I can't remember any of them right now. Irritating.

L's been asleep most of the night, thankfully, though I think I hear him moving about now. Sherlock was up briefly, but I put him back to bed and stayed with him for a while. Nightmares all round tonight, apparently. Part of it was Mycroft going back to school with things so unsettled here I think. Neither of them were happy about it.

His nightmare was about a vampire in the living room. Coffin on the floor by the sofa. He said it was just lying in there with its eyes closed looking dead. And he made sure I knew he wasn't even frightened of vampires because they're not real.

Mine, predictably, was about Afghanistan. At what point exactly do I get to go back to having nightmares about...oh, giant potatoes crushing me, or clams, or boots with teeth? You know, normal things.

Come back to bed? You can dream about jam covered badger with me...

Sorry, feel like I've messed all of us up. All I can do is...offer to hug you.

REReader said...

I'm sorry, John, I have no answers for you.

I can offer virtual hugs, though. And real, though long-distance, caring and support for you all. It's not enough, but I hope it helps a little.

I do like your new blog background!

John H. D. Watson said...

I just prefer it when my subconscious is more subtle, that's all.

L - really not your fault, at all. I'll be there in a second.

Small Hobbit said...

Good morning guys - thinking of you all. L - try not to think too much - I know that's probably an impossibility, but still. And do try to refrain from beating yourself up about the effect you're having on other people; just remember that if they didn't love you as much as you love them they wouldn't be feeling as they do.

And to the rest of my internetty friends - hope you have a good week.

Desert Wanderer said...

Sorry to hear you guys all had rough nights. Hopefully your days are a little brighter?

CzechReader said...

Spring is coming! Very... bright background :-)

My answer for the poll is Autumn. Definitely autumn. Lots of fruits to eat, warm enough but not too hot, nice colors on leaves - and no allergies for me.

Normal things? Define "normal", would you? I am sorry if I seem too snappy, but my brain is too tired to make sense (yes, my membership InsAn card finally arrived).

*shutting up and trying to sleep at work with my head on the keyboard*

Interesting new background.

Sorry to hear you all had a disturbed night; hopefully you all managed to get at least some sleep?

John - not sure anyone can give you an answer to that. When your subconscious feels like it's properly dealt with it all, I imagine. And it's not a small or easy thing to deal with :-( Are they at least getting less frequent?

Desert Wanderer said...

Alright Doc, I give up. "song about nothing, song about sheep"? Even Google's stumped.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's from a poem, can't remember the title. Last stanza goes like this...

Find me a singer to sing one song
Song about nothing, song about sheep
Over and over all day long
While I patch me again my threadbare sleep.

Nameless - yeah, they are less frequent, and I am grateful. Just a bit more jarring now when I do get them.

Greg Lestrade said...

You finished at the surgery? Or just between patients?

I'm sanding. Beware of dust when you get home and open the bedroom door. It's...dusty. I'm dusty. Everything is dusty. There is dust.

You've been warned.

John H. D. Watson said...

So...you're saying there may be some dust?

Yeah, I'm done, home soon.

mazarin said...

Hope you have a better day than you did night, John. Nighmares, especially those that seem tailor-made just to find our most vulerable spots, always seem like your own brain is betraying you. They should get less frequent as time passes. You've only been out a little over a year, right? Things are stressful right now, it's not really a surprise that you might have a few rough nights.

Then again, my dream last night was about parrots attacking me, so anything I have to say should be taken with a large grain of salt.

Greg Lestrade said...

it's a possibility.

And our bedding is on the sofa, the mattress is in the hallway and paint's on the kitchen table. Our room is full of slippery dust sheets.

A mug of tea would be great, thanks. ;) I may be so well camouflaged you have to shout for me.

REReader said...

Sounds like progress--or at least dust--is being made.

You have some...interesting questions to answer over on your blog, L. Even aside from strawberry-styled badgers.

I like that poem--at least what you quoted of it--very much, John. Do you know who wrote it so I can look up the rest?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, going to answer one once I've sugar soaped this room, while it dries.

It is a nice poem.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I'll bring sandwiches too.

RR - Edna St. Vincent Millay. First line... I think it's 'weave me a robe of richer fiber'. That might be a bit off though.

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay.

These walls are pretty good. barely any fixing. Probably get one coat on the ceiling today.

Nightmares stink, John, I'm sorry. I hope better dreams find you soon.

I've had dreams of lots of guns all month (I dream of villains when I'm having a tough time, always criminals or terrorists), but last night I dreamed of playing the piano, and it was marvelous.

Y'see, yesterday evening I finally set up my new piano stool, and now that I finally had a seat the right height for playing for lengths of time without hurting my back... I played off and on for the whole evening.

I guess sometimes filling your waking hours with something you really care about can affect your dreams in a good way. I sure hope this continues!

L, I fear you're going to be dreaming of dust and sugar soap....

REReader said...

What's sugar soap, L?

Thank you, John! For anyone interested, I found the poem online but I can't paste anything in the mobile version of this site. It was on a page titled 'Two Songs from "The Lamp and the Bell" by Edna St. Vincent Millay'.

CzechReader said...

AfSO - I envy you. In the good sense of word, though. I've played the piano ever since I was 3 years old and had to stop three years ago. I miss it.

Greg Lestrade said...

sugar soap is a slightly alkaline cleaner. Gets rid of grease, tobacco, all the dust I've created, makes for a very stable surface to repaint, once you've scrubbed it with sugar soap and cleaned it off with water.

Someone asked about gloves...and now I can't see it. Did it end up in the spambox, or am I blind?

Anyway, just read the box and apparently I should be wearing gloves. I'm not. I never have before.

REReader said...

Ah, I see--thanks, L.

I guess gloves might be a good idea for using cleaners--but even though several make my skin peel (including silver polish) I never do myself, I can't get a feel for what I'm doing through even those thin laytex gloves that doctors use.

John H. D. Watson said...

Maz - thanks. The sight of L entirely covered in dust (and now without a shirt) is quite cheering. Giant parrots?

ASO - That sounds like a lovely dream.

Greg Lestrade said...

Odd things cheer you up.

I dreamt I was a woman the night before last...what does that say about my subconscious??

John H. D. Watson said...

Huh. Dunno, but I'm sure someone will tell us. Old woman, young woman?

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know. My age, I suppose? I didn't really think about it.

Understanding your own subconscious is a sure step on the way to insanity ;-)

Were you a pregnant women Lestrade?

Dreams are seriously annoying and when bad ones come they ruin days which is never nice :-(

Greg Lestrade said...

err...how can I put this delicately...

I might have been on the way to pregnancy, Anony, if you know what I mean.

I feel like you'll all just think I'm a weirdo now.

Anonymous said...

mazarin said...

Yeah, John, that'd cheer anyone up. :D Did you get a chance to do a little recreational dusting while you guys were home alone?

(Now trying to plot to convince husband to repaint the bedroom. The side benefits sound nice.)

And no, not giant parrots. Just...a lot of regular-sized parrots with really strong pinchy beaks. While I was walking around a hotel garden, looking for a spare fire to cook something over. Maybe I drank too much port last night, I dunno.

Oh wow, Lestrade. That's something all right. And no, considering the conversation around here lately, it's not that strange!

John H. D. Watson said...

L - ha, who with? Me, I hope?

REReader said...

The first rule about talking about weird dreams is that no one is allowed to think you're weird for having them. (I just made it up, but it's a good rule, don't you think? :))

The weird bit is not that you dreamed it, L, so much as you dreamed it before the subject sort of came up yesterday!

Greg Lestrade said...

Err..God, no, I mean, I don't know it wasn't you. But I don't think it was. I don't know who it was.

Now I feel even worse!

Anonymous said...

Hey hey Mr L you can't go around feeling guilty for your dreams that is way to far towards insane!!

In all seriousness though why would you be dreaming it was John if you were a women? it wouldn't be logical really would it ;-)

Anony

John H. D. Watson said...

It's just a dream! Don't feel bad. And you're definitely not the first man I know who's had that one. (Although I was quite relieved the others didn't involve me.)

Greg Lestrade said...

to be honest, I don't think logic can possibly come into it...

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - I don't think you were missing anything. I doubt my dream was accurate. The last time I was between the legs of a woman I was escaping headfirst after a 9 month confinement...

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha! It's not that different, honestly, although thanks for that unfortunately vivid image of your mum.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not that different to what??

In my head it's all line drawings in text books, probably cut on half to show the internal workings... ;)

And...sorry? No one deserves that. What can I do to purge that vision from your mind?

My arms are aching. Ceilings are a pain in the arse.

We may have to kip on the mattress on the floor of the living room tonight.

John H. D. Watson said...

...Maybe I shouldn't venture a further opinion unless and until you feel like sharing details.

Well, you could take your shirt off again...

Could be fun, like indoor camping.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm not sure I can remember many details. Everything was very...smooth. And slippery.

If I take my shirt off I'll be even more completely covered with paint splatters off the roller. Soon as I'm done I'm in the shower.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sorry, I'm not laughing, really...

REReader said...

(You may not be laughing, John, but I'm...not either. Nope.)

If you two get to sleep on the living room floor, Sherlock is going to want to know why he doesn't get to, too, you know!

Greg Lestrade said...

You're mean. You bisexual know-it-alls make me sick... :) How's my poor subconscious meant to know what it's all like!

John H. D. Watson said...

It was just your baffled expression plus the 'smooth and slippery' comment...

mazarin said...

Well, Lestrade, for not actually experiencing it, you're pretty darn close to reality. :D

Greg Lestrade said...

I am baffled!

Usually I dream about stuff that's at least vaguely based on my own experiences.

John H. D. Watson said...

I never did. When I was younger, it was a shock if my dreams were even loosely based on reality. It was all jungle temples in the middle of shopping malls, or alien planets full of fish with wings.

mazarin said...

Well, being on the, um, recieving end isn't really THAT different, when it all comes down to it. I mean, it is, but it sort of isn't. So, if you've got experience with that, you're probably pretty darn close.

SO! Let's talk about how much painting you'll accomplish today!

Greg Lestrade said...

Goldfish?

I don't remember what I dreamt of when I was little.

Now, like I said, I generally dream of being stuck places, and although they're not real places, they're sort of based on various crime scenes/prisons/other horrible places I've been. Or sometimes flying. Or very violent fights. Which is when I wake you up.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right, Maz.

I can assure you it's quite surprising having...more holes than you expect. And sort of worrying.

Painting - I've filled, sanded and cleaned everything, and got one coat on the ceiling. Which I don't think will dry enough for another coat tonight.

REReader said...

Sounds like you were into SF, John. Some of those sound distinctly like Star Trek episodes...or close enough. :)

The flying doesn't sound too horrid, L.

REReader said...

And to me it sounds like you got a very lot done on the painting front!

mazarin said...

Since we're talking about dreams - it seems everyone I know has the same recurring dream. You show up to school, realize you had forgotten to go to a class for the entire semester (term) and now it's final exam time and you have no concept of what on earth you were supposed to have learned and you'll fail for sure. I'm not kidding, everyone I know with one or two exceptions has had this dream multiple times. Doesn't seem to matter about high school (secondary) or college. Anyone? Is this a regional mass delusion here in the Midwest USA or what?

John H. D. Watson said...

L - No, silver fish. Feathery wings. Very pretty. Kids must get better dreams than adults do. Or at least kids who are lucky enough not to have much nightmare fuel in their lives.

RR - I did love Star Trek, though if those were episodes, I don't remember them.

John H. D. Watson said...

Maz - I had that one in medical school, but not recently.

mazarin said...

Wow, that is quite a lot. I've been trying to convince hubs to help me do our tiny bedroom - 9' 12', and I don't think it would take long, as the walls are ancient and textured and painted already, so just moving the furniture and covering the floor would be the hardest prep for it all, I think.

(I can sort of imagine - I did dream I was a man once. It felt...odd. In lots of ways! How do you walk with all that out there, for heaven's sake!)

REReader said...

Maz, I not only have had that dream, it still recurs from time to time. It's always high school, though. I really, really, really hated the school I went to from pre-school through high school, and it's never fun to revisit.

John, there was an episode in TNG where an alien archive was remaking the Enterprise into a jungle-y temple kind of place--and the original series certainly visited a few jungle-y temple-y places (The Apple is one that pops to mind). :) (What, me into Star Trek? Nah.)

I have also dreamed I was a man any number of times--but I don't think I was ever me in those dreams. I mean, it wasn't that I had turned into a man, just that I was someone else.

Greg Lestrade said...

The walls were in really good nick. I didn't have to do much. And yeah, dragging all the furniture into the middle and getting it covered was more work.

And..what can I say...you get used to it. Probably a lot easier if it grows on you, rather than just appearing!

Greg Lestrade said...

Maz - that wasn't a dream. That was my education.

Oh, except for the turning up to exams part. Tried not to do that either. ;)

Do you not think sleeping in the living room might freak Sherlock out? I know you're not going to be sleeping in a coffin and that you're not vampires but still might be a bit freaky if he's up in the night.

Anony

Greg Lestrade said...

Hadn't thought about that...

We could drag the mattress up to Mycroft's room. Or just get really friendly and sleep in Mycroft's bed, but I'd worry about keeping John awake.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think you would.

We can all sleep in the living room in a fort!

Greg Lestrade said...

Anony - that's why I worry. Staying close, with me fidgeting because I can't sleep. Although if he isn't working tomorrow, I suppose it wouldn't be so bad.

We'll see, Sherlock. I really don't think a fort is necessary though. Just camping.

Anonymous said...

Don't think you're going to get the chance to try it now! I think you'll have a small boy fidgeting and keeping you both awake from the sounds of it ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

If we all sleep in the living room, he'll be on his own mattress, I assure you.

Which isn't to say we will be.

Afterall, I keep getting promised rub rub, and after painting a ceiling, and with another coat to do tomorrow, I might be claiming that tonight.

REReader said...

Sherlock has a sleeping bag, doesn't he? Although making a pad of blankets is fun too.

(I know because we didn't have any air conditioning for years when I was a child, and then for a long time we only had one in the living room. So when it got impossibly, unbearably too hot, we'd all camp out in the living room.)

Piplover said...

It sounds like sleeping in the living room would be fun! Maybe Sherlock can have his own fort, and you and John can just have your mattress, like regular camping.

I've had dreams where I was a man before, more than once, and, er, doing something similar. Very odd to dream such things. I can imagine how it would be on the other end.

Or, well, you know what? I'm gonna stop while I'm ahead.

Mazarin said...

RR, my hubs and I have it probably twice a year or so, still, and we've been out of school for a while. I figured someone else would have at least had it once, if not still having it now.

Lestrade, I figured that would have been your answer! You had plenty of other priorities for your days, I think.

Enjoy your bedtime arrangements! It sounds like at least Sherlock will!

Anonymous said...

good luck with both those negotiations ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Piplover - you're never ahead around here, as I've discovered.

RR - He can just sleep on his mattress, if we decide to sleep down here.

REReader said...

Definitely the most comfortable option. :)

Small Hobbit said...

Maz, I know what you mean, the one where you turn up to an exam and haven't a clue what the subject is.

Anon Without A Name said...

If it's any consolation, Pip, you're not alone in having had that kind of dream.

Maz - now I'm feeling weird because I've never had that dream.

REReader said...

Have been poking around the web, and from what I can tell that dream is so extremely common that every source has elebenty contradictory explanations for it.

Sherlock said...

Lestrade's mean and he says I can't have one and I bet if it was Mycroft he could have because he's mean to me and he's nice to Mycroft and it's not FAIR.

REReader said...

Sherlock, I understand that you're disappointed, but you know that's simply not true.

Didn't Lestrade make sure to get home in time to tell you a story just yesterday? Is he not letting you sleep in the living room even though if you slept in your own bed he wouldn't have to drag your mattress around? Lestrade just spent the day doing hard, ache-causing work, and he's tired and he's sore, and dragging around mattresses is not fun for him at all, so be nice, okay?

Anonymous said...

Oops, I'm so sorry, Greg! I misread the comments! *desk*

Sherlock - Greg does not treat you any differently than he does Mycroft. Plus, there is a lot of dust flying around, which means that if you're not careful, it's going to get everywhere and make more work for John and Greg to clean up. ReRe is right, so please take a deep breath and be nice.

~A from NW

Sherlock said...

He was late because he was letting Mycroft go on his bike and I'm not allowed and he isn't even doing proper work and we could build the best fort because we can use Mycroft's mattress and all the sofa cushions and it would be good and we could all go in it. I'm going to ask John because he makes the best forts with me and he's not mean.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm going to print that last bit about John out and give it to him, for next time you decide he's the mean one and I'm the good guy.

REReader said...

Sherlock, Lestrade has no choice about letting you ride on his bike--you are simply not tall enough yet. That's not being mean, that's keeping you safe, which is the opposite of being mean. When you are tall enough, he will take you.

And Lestrade is indeed doing proper work--people get paid for doing that kind of work and paid quite a bit. That it's not HIS proper work (which of course it is not) just means his muscles aren't used to it and it HURTS. Instead of asking John about forts, which you don't need if you're camping, after all, why don't you ask Lestrade if he can show you how to do a shoulder rub? My sister's children all know how to do shoulder and leg rubs.

(And I don't know why I am telling you this when I know and you know you are far too smart not to know it all already. What you are is upset, which is understandable, but then you should just say you are upset and why, and not add in things that aren't true.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Lestrade's already said no, Sherlock. Asking me isn't going to get you a different answer.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock, you can sleep down here, and we'll have storytime before bed, but that's it. And the more you sulk, the more likely that next time, we won't even let you do something like that. It's a school night, you should be in your own bed, where it's peaceful.

I bet the degus will miss you, too.

Now be good, and don't try and play John and I off against each other, because it won't work.

REReader said...

(All peaceful for the moment?)

Greg Lestrade said...

Peaceful with slight glowering, yeah.

REReader said...

Interesting weather you have in your neighborhood. :)

How's the neck and back after the ceiling work?

Greg Lestrade said...

Not too bad. I think I'll feel it tomorrow, when I do the second coat.

Sort of enjoy the ache of an honest day's work.

REReader said...

Yeah--like your body feels it accomplished something. Which it did.

(Please remember who's talking here--innocent, remember!)

Neck rub would be a good idea, though. Preventative, you know.

It's...slightly odd have a shoulder rub with a small beady Sherlock-eye watching me very intently. Exuding silent 'If I had a fort I wouldn't be able to stare at you' vibes at me...

To the Gender-Fuzzy dreaming Anon, not used to handling things... obviously I didn't exactly have anything to 'handle'. But Christ, when I did a bit of exploring I thought I'd lose my whole arm up there...like I said, smooth and slippery. It was...very wrong. (and entirely not anatomically correct, I'm sure.)

REReader said...

Anonymous said...

Yes, you shouldn't lose an arm in it to begin with. :D
But smooth and slippery is accurate though. (and well, that's nice when it's your real body)
For me, I guess my subconscious deduced how it would feel based on a similar if much smaller part of the female anatomy, so the feelings weren't too strange, but the visual, and handling, certainly was (especially since I was still a woman!).

Enjoy the back rub, despite the scrutiny, you deserve it after you hard work :)

Sherlock - I know, love. It's hard, and it feels unfair. When he gets home he'll need lots of hugs because I'm sure he's not having fun either, but right now, all we can do is wait. Be good for Mrs T, please. I don't think L's super could do anything either, even if you did call him.

You could draw something for L though, I know he'd like that. And help me think what to make him for dinner, okay?

Sherlock said...

Okay we can go to the shops on the way home and buy his favourite things and ice cream and cake.

Mrs T gave me a hug even though I didn't really want one and gave me the best drawing pencils to use.

John H. D. Watson said...

We'll do that. Do you know what you're going to draw for him?

Sherlock said...

You and him and his bike because he really likes his bike and you.

Anonymous said...

Sherlock, you should put yourself in the picture, and Mycroft because Lestrade really likes you two as well

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure he'll love it either way. See you soon.

Mycroft said...

I hope that both you and Sherlock are okay, John.

I would appreciate it if you or Lestrade would let me know what's happening whenever you can.

REReader said...

For what it's worth, John, Sherlock, there are a lot of us out here, waiting with you and caring about you all.

REReader said...

And about you too, Mycroft--you can be sure you haven't been forgotten.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm out. Be home in a bit.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mycroft - sorry, I sent you an email a few hours ago, I thought you'd still be in class. I'll call if you're free?

John H. D. Watson said...

L - good. See you soon.

Mycroft said...

I got that, thank you. I just meant if anything changed.

I'll call you later.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not much has changed, Mycroft. We'll talk later, thanks for your concern. Miss you.

Thanks everyone else for your thoughts.

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh good lord. Tough day all round. Hope everyone's OK this evening; sending good thoughts from this direction.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks Nameless. Think Sherlock is a bit...angry about everything. Probably a bit scared. About the same as the rest of us.

REReader said...

L, I know what you're all feeling is so far past anything we're feeling as to make our concerns seem a little...I don't know, patronizing? Irritating? (And yes, I know you know we don't mean it that way, no disclaimers needed.) So I'll just say that we're here, and if there's anything I can do, just say so. And...yeah.

If it's okay with you, please all give each other an extra hug from me.

Anonymous said...

*nods* Greg, let us know if there's anything we can do.

I hope the news only gets better from here on out...

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks.

It's sort of nice that Sherlock can wear all his feelings on the outside. Quite refreshing, in a way. Wouldn't have minded sitting under the table refusing to talk to anyone myself at some points today.

Anonymous said...

Hope it wasn't too hard a day L and that it's a good step in the right direction for you.

Any news on the boy?

Small Hobbit said...

Really, really sorry to hear that. Nothing more to say but hang in there.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks.

Times like this I'd rather..I don't know. Run away and not inflict myself on anyone.

Anonymous said...

No running away anymore You have too many people who need and love you and you love and need them too

REReader said...

If you want to stay offline, no problem, we understand.

If you want to run away from John, Sherlock, and Mycroft--I understand it, but they need you too much. So hang on to each other, 'kay?

Adding on to the country-wide theory with a big YES from California. It's one of my least favorite recurring dreams; I'm always so relieved when I wake up.

It's a similar sensation to another of my classics I like to call "Late for the Airport." It's the whole being unprepared for something important with no chance of catching up...seems as though most of my nightmares are centered around that feeling.

Anonymous said...

Greg - You're really not inflicting yourself on anyone. Two decades of habit (running away and not being a bother to others) aren't going to disappear overnight. So you know what to do: trust yourself, trust the people who love you.

If you go out for a ride tonight to clear your head, you know how we fret and give unnecessary warnings about being careful. :)

Do what you need to do; you know how to find us if you need us (and we can keep John company too).

Greg - You're really not inflicting yourself on anyone.

Quoted for truth.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I'm not going anywhere.

Just...restless. Scared I'll snap at Sherlock or John. Want to smoke and drink (doing neither). Don't want them going through this. Finding the idea of anyone needing me vaguely terrifying.

The little boy is much better. Awake. Still in hospital, but no brain damage, they think.

REReader said...

Restless is perfectly understandable, and then some.

You won't snap at Sherlock. (Even when he acts up you don't. So you won't.) I'd tell you John won't break if you snap at him, but he's right there--talk to him about it. And we won't break if you snap at us.

They don't want you going through this as much or more. It's part of the deal.

You'll get used to being needed. It has it's good points.

And I am very glad that it looks like the boy won't suffer any permanent damage from his father's irresponsibility (to put it as politely as I can).

(And I bet John already told you all of this.)

Anonymous said...

Greg - I'm glad to hear that the little boy is on his way to recovery.

As for the restless bit...would it be safe for you and John to go for a short run tonight, after Sherlock's gone to bed? Or you and John could just silently cuddle?

No one here wants you or John or the boys to be going through this, but considering how all of you met in the first place... I'd say you're all stronger people than you think you are.

L, I'm sorry you've had a rough day. It sounds like you could all use a bit of cheering up.

Maybe if you drew some pictures with Sherlock? Even if it's just stick figures, it might help you calm a bit, and would let Sherlock be with you without having to say anything.

I hope you all have a more restful night tonight.

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh, that's good news.

[Feel free to ignore all of the rest of this if it's annoying]

I know John is going to be OK at giving you some space; I'm guessing Sherlock is finding it much more difficult (and not just because he's also scared and angry).

This is going to sound horribly patronising, and it's really not meant to be, so I hope you don't mind me saying, but I think you're doing really well, not hitting the booze or the fags. That's presumably because you have other support mechanisms. When things are tough is exactly the time to let yourself be supported; it'll be your turn to provide the support often enough.

Don't want them going through this.

Yeah. But they are. You taking yourself out of the equation won't actually make the situation any better for them. Letting them in, will.

And having said all of that, getting out on the bike when you need to give yourself time and space to clear your head a bit sounds like a good plan :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - I have snapped at Sherlock in the past. But I try not to.

Nameless - think it's more knowing how disappointed everyone would be in me if I did hit the booze and fags. And how disappointed I'd be in myself.

Which isn't taking anything away from John, Mycroft and Sherlock, because they are all being great.

Think we'll go for a run tomorrow. John's worked like a demon on the painting today, so we can run when coats are drying tomorrow. Think it'd be good for both of us.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm so glad the boy's doing better.

REReader said...

I have snapped at Sherlock in the past. But I try not to.

Okay. And if you do again, you'll apologize after if it wasn't warranted--and you won't if it was.

A run is a great idea. And/or a ride.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. They took his Dad to see him yesterday, under guard, obviously. I hope the boy was pleased to see him.

CzechReader said...

Sending some happy thoughts your way. I hope that the situation is resolved soon, favorably for you and yours.

John H. D. Watson said...

Me too.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks for being so brilliant with Sherlock. And me.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't feel especially brilliant at the moment. Happy to do what I can though.

Greg Lestrade said...

You are. I mean, I don't know what you could do to be any more brilliant, with emailing Mycroft and calming Sherlock down and being so nice to me. And painting half a bedroom on your own.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well, I had to do something with myself. Might as well do something useful.

And people ought to be nice to you more often. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It's happening more and more, this last year or so.

And yeah, just don't leave me nothing to do :)

You okay for a run tomorrow? Not overdone it with the roller?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, a run sounds good. Want to do it on the way back from dropping off Sherlock?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I wanted to have a few words with Mrs T, just... I don't know. I know she can't make it any better for Sherlock either, but I want her to know what's going on.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. I know she'll try at least.
