here

Well, we're here! We've been here a little while, actually, but we were a bit busy for blog updates. This is where we're staying:

It's a beautiful place. There was champagne in the room when we got there, and there's also this:

And it's really just...lovely and quiet and peaceful. It's so nice to spend time alone with my husband and not have to worry about homework or bedtimes or who ate all of whose chocolates without telling who or what the dogs might or might not have eaten (they can't possibly have eaten an entire scarf, can they? It was five feet long...). And just have time to talk and lie about and leave dinner until the last minute because there's only us to organise.

In other news, I've been asked to start doing two shifts a week at work after the new year. I'm not sure it's fair to Mrs Hudson, or to Sherlock. It's not so bad when they're at night, or on L's days off...but then I don't get to see him on his days off, and I know he hates it when I work nights. Just not sure it's worth it, but I'm still thinking about it.

Mmm..speaking of dinner, there's a whole teams of chefs and waiters and all sorts just waiting for us to get downstairs... at some point ;)

As for work...stop thinking about work...

John H. D. Watson said...

No more thinking about work till we get home.

Also no more pushing me under freezing tropical storm showers!

Greg Lestrade said...

I pulled you under it! So to speak... and they're called experience showers...it was an experience!

...have to try the other settings next time.

I know it doesn't help, but...you do have to do the work that will make you happy, as well as thinking about the rest of us.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. It was definitely an experience. We'll have to try some more, yes.

I know. And I know you'd support me whatever I decide to do. I'm just thinking about the trade offs, that's all.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I might be a servant of two masters, but one of them I can threaten with no bedtime story or pudding.... and one day I'll find something that works on Sherlock as well as that works her Majesty ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

In the meantime...dinner?

Greg Lestrade said...

yes. Wonderful. (I hope.)

Joolz said...

Wow, it all looks just wonderful. Hope your meal was as good as anticipated and your other experiences are as good in the shower - what other settings did they have.

Glad you've had the chance of more work if you want it, John, just goes to show how much they value your skills. If you're doubting doing another shift right now whilst Sherlock is still so young and needing you, is there any way you could maybe just do extra when they're short at the moment instead of as a permanent thing. That way you have more time for Sherlock and can spend your free time with Greg when he's off as you said above it's so nice when you get some alone time just the two of you and you can always take on more shifts when Sherlock's a bit older. Sorry, I should just butt out, you've got to do what you're happy with and if you love the challenge of the work so much then I'm sure you can all work round one extra day a week and still get the important time together that you need.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday anyway. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Joolz - I didn't notice the other settings, but we'll report back.

And yeah, as you say, Sherlock's still so young. In just a few years, he'll probably be away at school too, so...I don't know. He's growing up so fast, I don't want to miss anything.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think there are various settings based around monsoon/storm/mist/downpour. Oddly they don't have 'London Drizzle' though.

The tropical storm is great - starts warm (to lure unsuspecting husbands in, pretty red glow, nice smell, birdsong!) Then goes pitch black, lightening flashes, thunder booms, colder water pours down. Then everything turns blue and the freezing mist surrounds you, and smells all...fresh! I laughed at them being 'experience showers' - but they really are!

Danger - I'm sure there's something we can do to work around it. Maybe you could do a clinic, with more regular hours, for one shift? If it fitted in with one of Sherlock's clubs, then all you'd be missing was waiting for him?

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe. Something with regular hours would be easier. Not thinking about work though, remember? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

No. Definitely not. At all.

Thinking about finishing this wine, moving off this very comfy sofa, and heading to our room to check the bed is as comfy as it seems....

Mycroft said...

Given past experiences, I assure you it is more likely the degus who have consumed a scarf than my dogs. They are well trained, unlike Sherlock's rodents.

I am glad you're having a good time. We had a nice day too.

Sherlock went to bed without any fuss. Although it is possible he has actually slipped into a diabetic coma, hence the lack of struggle.

Greg Lestrade said...

Good to know your day went well, Mycroft. We've been thinking of you! Hope Sherlock isn't having too much of a sugar-crash tomorrow.

Maybe it's the flat wallpaper eating the scarves? They seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate.

I hope you had a great night gents and I'm glad you had fun with your mum boys :-)

Its good news about work John even if you decide the time isn't right for more hours just yet. There's nothing like being asked to do more to give you an sense of how well someone thinks you do your job :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Lovely morning. Breakfast in bed, watching trees and cows and things appearing as the mist burnt off. Now a nice cold autumny day. We're having a walk.

John H. D. Watson said...

Perfect.

Greg Lestrade said...

You are.

REReader said...

It all sounds beautifully pastoral and idyllic. :)

Sherlock said...

When are you home it's very boring but Mycroft is making something with cheese and that's good.

REReader said...

Cheese is always nice!

Did you have a good time with your mum, Sherlock? Did she like the wreath you made for her?

Greg Lestrade said...

We have returned. Sherlock has...been busy.

Mycroft has survived :) and cooked us dinner!

Small Hobbit said...

Were you able to get into the flat or was it full of decorations?

Greg Lestrade said...

...err, we got into the flat. He was told that if the living room did not remain tidy, there would be no room for a Christmas tree.

It has, however, snowed in our bedroom....

REReader said...

That's...very seasonal! :)

And well done, Mycroft--it's lovely to come home to a waiting dinner.

John H. D. Watson said...

We suspected something was up when Sherlock didn't launch himself at us the moment we walked in the door.

Greg Lestrade said...

At least it is vaguely possible to clear them up without too much trouble. And it meant he was being quiet for Mrs H and Mycroft.

Sherlock said...

They were GOOD and all different like real snowflakes. And I made the degus some too

REReader said...

What did you make them out of, Sherlock? And did the degus enjoy playing with theirs?

Sherlock said...

Paper and newspapers and Mrs Hudson gave me magazines and I folded them and cut them out. The degus put them in their sleeping nest.

REReader said...

That must have taken a lot of time and effort, then! Very impressive.

And that does sound like your degus like them. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

The degus do tend to drag most things to their nest. And then eat it.

The only thing I drag to my nest is John ;)

Joolz said...

Not even going to complete that sentence... ;)

Hope you had a wonderful break and are now rested for the fray of Christmas which is soon upon us.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm still trying to ignore Christmas, completely. Which isn't working, but y'know.

REReader said...

Well, degus are a bit limited in the ways they can show appreciation, after all!

John H. D. Watson said...

They were very good snowflakes.

L - I think that may get harder the close it gets...

Sherlock said...

Lestrade said the hotel had FOUR Christmas trees you can't ignore FOUR TREES I want four we could do that instead of one big one.

John H. D. Watson said...

They'd have to be four pretty tiny ones to fit anywhere, and I don't think all out things would go on tiny trees.

Sherlock said...

We could make the sitting room into a forest

Greg Lestrade said...

BED!

Olli said...

(psssst, Sherlock! We have two, in our tiny condo. I'm sure you can manage three trees.)

pandabob said...

Is it work today Greg? I hope it goes as well as it can if it is :-)

Enjoy your day whatever you're up to Mycroft, you too John. :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, work. Sherlock was being a proper terror this morning, with Mycroft and John being at home/doing things together.

pandabob said...

I can imagine that Sherlock's finding it less than fun to have to go to school when Mycroft's home but maybe you and he can treat each other later as your rewards for missing out on being at home ;-)

Good luck with your day :-)

REReader said...

It has to feel dreadfully unfair--to both of you! :)

(Should I not mention that it's snowing here? But it's not sticking, other than a little on cars!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock, we are not having multiple trees.

Danger, thought you might appreciate this. http://m.imgur.com/a/4UxgB

John H. D. Watson said...

...That is fantastic. And it's so easy to picture saying any of those to Sherlock.

Also we might have a small rosemary plant cut into the shape of a dinosaur. Not exactly Godzilla, but...well, I walked past it in a shop window and it seemed too good to pass up.

REReader said...

Ha, nifty!

Also, there are trees, and then there are trees... ;)

REReader said...

(I like these!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Just what I always wanted, Danger. Am I allowed to cook with it?

rsf said...

When I was little, my mom let me paint my walls to look like a forest in my room. I really liked it, but we never did manage to turn my bed into a giant mushroom.

Lots of fun links today -- I love the sayings one, and those ornaments are neat. Here's mine -- the National Theater folks making me wish I lived in London again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usOXYbYrJ6g

REReader said...

Thanks for that vid, rsf, it gave me the biggest smile!

John H. D. Watson said...

L - you are! Maybe you can take springs out of its back in a sort of scale like pattern.

Greg Lestrade said...

I shall try.

Have you convinced Sherlock that he didn't miss anything today and you were both suitably boring?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not at all. I think what he'd really like is a complete minute to minute log of activities so he can check it himself.

ro said...

L, that chain of restaurants, Leon, is running an 'Ugly Christmas Jumper' competition. First prize is a set of cookbooks, in case you know of any such jumpers ... just email a pick to pickme@leonrestaurants.co.uk by December 18th!

Y'know. Just in case you know someone with one. Not saying you do...

It got up to 14 degrees (F) yesterday and felt downright balmy. I saw people in shorts and flipflops. As well as people shopping for groceries in insulated ski pants, because Coloradans might be slightly insane.

When is Sherlock out for the holidays?

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't believe you don't keep a video diary if your day for him.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know, what was I thinking?

Greg Lestrade said...

when's his school play thing? And any idea what he's going to be? He was going on about being a storm the other day...

John H. D. Watson said...

Ella - his last day is the 20th which is much too far away, as you can imagine.

L - Friday. I believe he actually is a storm. One that plays the violin.

REReader said...

That sounds like an exciting and dramatic role! (I can't help but wonder, however, what sort of costume a storm wears...)

Greg Lestrade said...

finally on the way home.

Danger - maybe he was practicing this morning, he looked like a dark little cloud of grumpiness. But actually, I think he wants to be a raincloud and lightning, so....we'lll need to see about that.

Sherlock said...

I want flashing lightning that I can make go off.

Greg Lestrade said...

...right. Yes. I'm sure we can arrange something.

And After missing him for 12 hours, can I just remind everyone how amazingly handsome my husband is?

Small Hobbit said...

We are all, as you can imagine, quite amazed to hear this!

Did the scarf turn up? Or did it go for bedding?

rsf said...

I saw some people using LED strobe lights to make lightning in a tornado costume at Halloween. It was a huge costume though, and I don't know how they powered the light.

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade - you can, but I'm sure a picture would help us with that :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, I might try to find a suitable picture.

RSF - we can knock up something with lights and things, I'm sure. It's easy to do with a little battery pack.
