Well...we've had cake, we've had sushi, we've had experimental cake sushi made by Sherlock (cake bits flattened out and rolled around icing). And I had a shock this morning when Sherlock walked into our room, announced that was NINE and that in JUST FOUR YEARS he would be a teenager. Then he said he was old enough to make his own breakfast and walked out again.
L and I stared at each other for a little while, three quarters asleep, and then got up to go after him in case he decided he was old enough to cook bacon and burn the kitchen down. When we got to the kitchen, he told us with great scorn that he was just making toast, god, and said it so exactly the way Carla does that neither of us could help laughing.
Sorry, Sherlock. You are old enough to make toast, certainly, and for many other things, and you seem to be getting more grown up every day. It's a joy to have you in our lives. Happy birthday!

Thank you and thank you for my presents and cake and everything. and Lestrade said I had to enjoy it because once I hit double figures it would all be downhill and what does that even mean because I can't wait to be about 15 and do things all on my own and then ride a motorbike and then ride around the whole world and not have to eat swede anymore just because you say I have to.
Don't worry, he's exaggerating. You've probably got at least until you're 35 before it all goes downhill. ;)
And you're going to ride around the whole world? I wasn't aware of this plan.
Be fair, Sherlock changes his plans more often than his pants! And 15 is possibly a little young to go around the world...plus you'd get distracted, kiddo. It'd take you the rest of your life to get around the globe!
And I jolly well hope your life wasn't all downhill after 35, Danger! Mine took a very distinct upturn in my mid 40s :)
Well, all right, you may have a point. But we've promised not to be too soppy on his birthday. :)
...A helicoptor has just arrived to hover over us on the sofa with a banner saying 'more cake!' I suspect if we attempted to kiss now we'd get a face full of rotor...
I'm expecting the next one to say 'cake > kissing'
I'm getting the distinct impression that if he did put a camera on it he'd use it mainly to never leave his little man-cave under his bed, and merely fly all his demands down here to us. At least now he has to peek through the door after it.
Maf may be our only hope at defence. The way she's staring at it, if the chopper comes too low, she will have it in her little claws.
Best cat toy she's ever had.
The helicopter, or Sherlock? ;)
Ha. Both!
Don't know who I'm trying to kid though. She's got me wrapped around her little orange paw too. When she stares at you and lifts up a paw it's actually impossible to resist making her chase something.
happy birthday, Sherlock! 9 is half way to 18, is that considered an adult in the UK? Think of all the things you have learned to do for yourself since you were born, and other things you will learn between now and when you turn 18.
cake and ice cream are always good, and that helicopter sounds like a lot of fun.
Many happy returns,
S
I hope you're having a good first-school-day-as-a-nine-year-old, Sherlock! (Does your school celebrate birthdays?)
And I hope everyone else is having a good day, too. :)
Happy Birthday, Sherlock! (I get the notices a day late, but that only means you get an extra day of being celebrated, right?)
It's very quiet - I assume everyone's decided to hibernate early this year. Happy Equinox Day!
Wouldn't the ability to hibernate just be awesome SH? :-D
I hope you're having a useful day gents :-)
Well I've sort of been hibernating - I'm still on holiday for a few more days, so I've just had a lovely long lie-in, after a glorious night's sleep in my own bed for the first time in a week :-)
BTW Sherlock, I saw an advert for gelato yesterday that made me think of you, it said that "our gelato is made from the freshest ingredients, so it's not just tasty, it's good for you!" :-)
Happy birthday, Sherlock! Sorry I'm late, on holiday and the connection is unreliable. Hope you're having a brilliant second birthday party later on! Have fun :-)
I would love to hibernate. But sadly just very busy at work!
Sherlock did say thank you to you all for the birthday wishes...just not in your hearing ;)
And I think we have secured a place to stay next weekend with both horse riding and a hot tub, because I think we'll need it after a day on a horse!
That's going to be an epic birthday weekend, sounds like!
The week proceeds round here. Hope everyone's making progress!
(Did your robin give up, SH?)
fA
Happy autumn equinox, everyone! Have you seen the cute Google doodle?
Your birthday weekend plans sound like they are well worth the week's wait--excellent call, Sherlock!
The robin has given up, fA - or else, since it's now cloudy, there's less reflection from the windows. The back garden is now being taken over by small spiders with grandiose expectations spinning six foot webs for us humans to walk into.
That sounds like an excellent late birthday weekend.
Yes! The Giant killers strike again. We've taken out Norwich. Here's hoping for an away game v someone big like Liverpool. (if they ever finish these pens!) Sorry you won't be going any further, Greg, def up for the league instead. :)
Miserable, eh? But the Liverpool game just went 14-13 on pens! Blimey.
I had a suspicion when I went to bed that I'd get up this morning and Liverpool would still be at it!
I hope the day treats you all well and that Sherlock isn't getting too excited about his second birthday weekend :-)
Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) begins tonight, and I want to wish you all a happy, healthy, peaceful year: http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/rereader3/Holidays/RH14_IE_zpsed35b43c.jpg
Sherlock will assure you there's no such thing as 'too excited' ;)
Thanks RR, you too!
Thank you, L. :)
And since I'll be going offline from this evening through to Sunday, I will proffer my wishes for a great Sherlock-birthday-celebration weekend now!
I almost agree with Sherlock, I like birthdays :-D
How went/goes the day gents?
I hope you have a happy celebration RR :-)
Happy New Year to you, RR. I hope it's good time spent with those you love.
Life, this week, has the pedal to the metal in these parts (to use an expression I haven't heard in a while -where do these pop up from?). I'm going to be as excited to see the weekend come as Sherlock!
Well, maybe. I am not sure I am physically capable of nine-year-old Sherlock levels of excitement. Does he visibly vibrate?
fA
He's just a blur, mainly.
Ha!

right, packing...sort of done. Sherlock reluctantly deposited at school (him reluctant, not us). Mycroft promises he's ready for a swift pick-up en route tonight... I'm now baking a cake to take, John is trying to pack for Sherlock... sounds like a birthday weekend is about to happen!
Well that all sounds like great fun :-).
I can understand Sherlock's reluctance about school but I bet he's having great fun telling his classmates all about the many things he thinks he's going to do this weekend ;-)
Good luck with the packing and the baking :-)
I trust John is packing lots of books, no clothes and either the degus or Maftet ;)
You are old hands at packing and at cake baking, so things sound well underway! Enjoy.

We're very fortunate we're all in a position to squeeze an extra day out of the weekend. Otherwise we'd be in the way back before we arrived virtually.
we're nearly there and it's dark and tomorrow we're going to ride horses!
I'm glad you're nearly there Sherlock, you've been very patient waiting until Mycroft could join you to celebrate your birthday properly :-)
I hope you have a great time :-)
Enjoy your day! Looking forward to reading reports later :)
Enjoy your horse riding Sherlock, I hope you all have the best time ever :-D
Morning all. I'm sure you'll be up nice and early with the prospect of horse riding to look forward to, who could sleep when that awaits. ;)
Hope you have a wonderful birthday weekend now that you're all back together again. Have fun with your special holiday, Sherlock.
Have a great day everyone. :)
It is a stunning day. Unbelievably warm and sunny. Our horses are...large. But so far well behaved despite having slightly incompetent pilots.
I suspect the horses are used to much more incompetent pilots that you lot ;-)
I'm glad the weather is as it should be for a special young man's birthday celebrations :-)
Well... That was fun. But my bum doesn't think so!
Mycroft says I should add that I'm talking about horse riding.
I'm sure we never thought anything else ;-)
You cannot imagine how wide I'm grinning. You have influenced Mycroft so that he will apply his wry humor to plebian double entendres. And I doI lay all the credit at your door, L. Your work here is, if not done, pretty impressive. ;-)
