a cause for celebration

Mycroft’s A level results have arrived. Sherlock has declared this an occasion for celebration, by which he means cake. He and Mrs Hudson are plotting, and he’s invited his mum to dinner. (By invited, I mean he rang her up and demanded that she come. Since she’s in [redacted] I think it’s unlikely she’ll make it, but who knows.)

I’m home from work early due to having gashed my arm open by ingloriously slipping on a literal banana peel and falling against the mysteriously sharp edge of a rusted metal ladder. Went to hospital, got stitches, tetanus booster, questioned how this was in fact my life. A banana peel. Honestly.

But! I’m happy to be home. Mycroft is home as well (apparently spy school let out early today) (yes, Mycroft, don’t call it that, I know), waiting kindly to open his results until we’re all here, apparently not nervous at all. So now we are all waiting for L, some of us (Mycroft) more patiently than others…

It’s not as if any of us doubt he did brilliantly, but I’d still like to know!

Hang on hang on at no point during me hacking a lung up with laughter at that banana skin attacking you did you mention stitches! You said you were fine!

I'm going to have to come home early, clearly.

John H. D. Watson said...

I am fine! But do please feel free to hurry home anyway! Also there's cake.

REReader said...

All celebrations are better with cake--good thinking, Sherlock!

Ouch, John, that sounds painful. I hope it heals up quickly.

How are you so calm, Mycroft?! Of course we know you did brilliantly, but it's always nice to see confirmation!

Sally said...

He's already gone. Hopping about in here wearing his boxers trying to pull his leathers on and shouting orders before muttering about bloody doctors and heading out. Hope you heal quickly John. Good luck Mycroft, hope you get what you want.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha thanks for that image Sally! We'll let you know!

Greg Lestrade said...

....picture this, dear readers. There is cake. There is everyone. I have very badly tried to secrete a bottle of champagne under my chair. Sherlock has declared exams are stupid. Mrs Holmes has poured us all tea. Anthea is poised with a camera, to suspiciously little protest from Mycroft....

That anonymous brown envelope that has been taunting us all is opened. Ripripriprip (with a letter opener, naturally....) and Mycroft pulls out.... A bloody Council Tax bill. He stares at us, the paper flopping folornly in his hand. I stare at him, then I think I must be dreaming this, and then turn to John, whose jaw is hanging open, so I can assume he's seeing the same thing. Mrs Holmes blinks. Sherlock grabs the paper (And some extra cake).

Anthea is snapping away with her camera, and it's only the moment we register she's got it pointed at us, not Mycroft, that she and Mycroft absolutely kill themselves, hooting with laughter, slapping the table, the dogs start howling, Maf climbs the tallest bookcase, Sherlock declares everyone stupid, and finally Mycroft pulls the REAL envelope out of his pocket, still roaring with laughter and pointing at 'our faces'.

Absolute....toerag. Scheming little...the pair of them. I might put them both over my knee.

He has - once the merriment died down and he opened the real envelope - as suspected, done brilliantly, and there are mere formalities now to secure his university place. Although once I tell them of the pure cruelty he inflicts on his elders, maybe they won't want him. Toerag.

REReader said...

Hahahahahahahaha!

Good one, Mycroft and Anthea!

Lancs. Anon said...

Well done, both results and successful take-in :-)

It's good that everyone's together for the celebration.

pandabob said...

That is the very best thing I have heard today, well done Mycroft on the results and on the windup :-D

I'm sorry you're hurt John but banana skins are deadly so I guess you should think yourself lucky really just to need stitches ;-)

Anon Without A Name said...

Well done, Mycroft! :-D

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't encourage him to use his talents for evil!

REReader said...

Not for evil, for causing merriment! ;)

Kestrel337 said...

Amazing, Mycroft and Anthea. Well done, both in the prank and the results. Enjoy the celebration, everyone.

Greg Lestrade said...

Anyway, I agree with Mrs Holmes.

She looked at me and said 'what sort of upbringing have I let you inflict on these two?'

So she was obviously under some sort of odd impression that I like a good prank as much as the next guy.

Therefore she and I obviously agree it's John's fault.

Small Hobbit said...

Congratulations Mycroft!

I wonder, L, whether your occasional choice of clothing has anything to do with Mycroft's sense of humour?

Desert Wanderer said...

So many things about that story are lovely: Mycroft and Anthea's amazing sense of humor, that Mrs. Holmes made it to watch, that even Sherlock was fooled, and that it's a sign of a happy family.

Congratulations, Mycroft, on both your successful prank and being rewarded for your hard work!

Joolz said...

Well done, Mycroft, much deserved results for all the work you put in and a lovely way to relieve the tension of the moment. :)

A lovely idea to have cake, Sherlock, both for the celebration and also for the walking wounded. Hope your arm heals quickly, John, and you didn't get too severe a comeback from worrying your husband like that.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've just felt the collars of a few greengrocers, that's all...

REReader said...

Watching the Rio Closing Ceremony, and all I can think is that after London's, this is such a let down. You guys sure know how to throw a memorable party!

Greg Lestrade said...

Right...well, the spies are about to release their little spylings on the world, and we are about to release Sherlock on the world...

Have we packed everything? Almost certainly not.

Are we going anyway? You bet.

REReader said...

Ooh, exciting! Travel safe and have fun!

pandabob said...

Planning and packing are seriously over rated :-D

Have a good time together.

Anon Without A Name said...

Have a fab time, all!

Joolz said...

Have fun visiting old haunts, let's hope this trip isn't quite as eventful as the first one. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It's a beautiful day for a ride. We have packed everything on the bikes and are off!

Tresta said...

Have fun you all! And congratulations, Mycroft! Very well done on your scores.

Greg Lestrade said...

Our first night under the stars! And it's still boiling hot. Which I suppose is good!

REReader said...

Well--better than freezing cold, anyway! (I hope it at least cools down enough to be comfortable for sleeping.) Did you skip the campfire? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Happy Anniversary to the love of my life! (my husband, not my bike, in case anyone was wondering) I'll treat you to a nice cool pint in a comfy beer garden this afternoon!

John H. D. Watson said...

I am happy to share you with your bike. ;) Happy anniversary, Greg. I love you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Love you too. I hadn't really thought about it, but It's very fitting being back here for it.

It,s also incredibly hot. We should find a mountain stream to lie in.

REReader said...

Happiest of happy anniversaries, you two!

(Has there been cake? All celebrations are better with cake!)

Anonymous said...

Happy Anniversary! (& many more)

Congratulations Mycroft!

Sounds like you know how to celebrate!

I have to agree with Mrs. H. that without your good home environment and strong family support, the Mycroft you met that first week would probably not have thought to turn his skills at planning and execution to such an excellent prank.

Heal well, John, and I hope for a fantastic holiday for all.

Lancs. Anon said...

Happy Anniversary, guys, here's to many more of them! Is it not weird to be back there? You've all of you changed so much since then!

Joolz said...

Happy Anniversary John & Greg, hope you've had a lovely day. Nice to spend it all of you together in the place where it all began. Here's to many happy years ahead. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks, guys!

There's been beer. There's also been celebratory ice cream sundaes of huge proportions.

We are now making a decent campsite, because it may rain tonight.

REReader said...

Celebratory ice cream sundaes are even more celebratory than celebratory cake!

Anon Without A Name said...

Happy anniversary, gents! Hope the rain stays away for you :-)

Tresta said...

I tried to leave my congratulations this morning and got error messages, twice. So just in case I'm not in Johns spam filter

Happy Anniversary, a bit late! John, I hope your arm doesn't hurt too much-though L is probably good at distracting you;-)

Seriously, I hope the arm feels much better and doesn't keep you out of the water too much, have fun with your boys!

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks, Tresta! You were not in the spam (although someone else was, so it's good I checked), so they must've been genuine error messages. It is safe to say that I am well and truly distracted from my arm!

Greg Lestrade said...

Well..tonight we had the fun of trying to avoid both the rain and anything that might be struck by lightening... so we've ended up staying in a pub.

There are worse places to be stuck.

REReader said...

Food, company, alcohol...yep, many worse places to be! :)

Glad to hear you've been distracted at least, John--I hope there's not still a lot of pain to be distracted from.

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't say I'm sad about a private room and a nice double bed after nights of waking up with Sherlock's feet in my face and constant questions all night about various wildlife that likes to come out and yell in the dark.

REReader said...

...Wildlife comes out at night and yells? What wildlife? Are they hungry and what do they eat?

Anonymous said...

Privacy is sometimes not easy to come by when traveling with kids. I trust you two to enjoy it thoroughly.

-fA

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't always know exactly what wildlife, RR. Badgers, rabbits, foxes, beasts. Some of them would probably eat a ten year old if provoked.

We found the exact spot we met today. Well, we tried, Sherlock told us we were wrong and took us around the corner to the actual exact spot.

Then we went to Holmes' Manor.

pandabob said...

It sounds like you're all having a good time looking back at the beginning :-)

REReader said...

Better not to provoke any beasts, then... ;)

Hurrah for knowing the exact right spot, Sherlock!

How's the Manor visit going?

Greg Lestrade said...

I dunno, it was odd, being back at the manor. Not so much for John and I, but for the boys. Not 100% sure what they were thinking (not that I ever am).

REReader said...

It is always a bit strange, coming back to a place you used to live--especially if it hasn't changed but you have.

Anonymous said...

So true, RR.

And at their ages, everyone changes a lot in that amount of time, but they've seen so much more change than that - and seem to have much sharper memories than average.

Did you all actually go inside the Manor? Or even stay there?

-fA

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, we're back in London, which is hot and crowded and a bit of a shock after the moors.

But Maf has attached herself to John, the degus are having a bath overseen by Sherlock, the dogs have nearly knocked Mycroft off his feet....I'll go and see if Mrs H wants a hug I suppose?

REReader said...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Tresta said...

I have to second that aww! Kitty hugs are the best! My girl likes to jump into my arms for cuddles. L, I am sure Mrs Hudson would love a hug from you! You know that if you and John were gone by yourselves, Sherlocks hugs would be epic, right? You just took your best hugger with you!

That is lovely, about Maf and the dogs and degus. Is Maf especially attached to John? So sweet.

Anonymous said...

The best kind of vacation: it feels good to leave and it feels good to come home!

-fA

Greg Lestrade said...

Maf is usually both especially and actually attached to John, whenever she can arrange it. She does occasionally deign to sit on the rest of us, if he's not about.

REReader said...

Has she been detachable yet? :D

Greg Lestrade said...

Not really, no!

We bought a new lamp before we went away. Online, as you do these days. I say we...I bought it. Because my eyesight is failing and I need a floor lamp for by the sofa so I can read things.

I did not read the thing that told me how large it would be.

I have accidentally furnished our living room with something the anti-aircraft gunners trying to shoot down the Luftwaffe would have been happy to have. I fear that when we use it moths will journey from another planet they're so in awe of it's brightness. Ships will turn in the channel, wary of this sudden new lighthouse which has sprung up. Batman will arrive, having been summoned by it's signal.

Maf has already climbed it.

REReader said...

I bet it does make for better reading conditions, though... :D

pandabob said...

Every living room should have such a lamp ;-)

We had a power cut last night and I found myself trying to put three kids to bed with only the light of a very low battery iPad to do it by and it gave me a whole new appreciation of light ;-)

REReader said...

Happy Labor Day weekend to those in the US! Do you have a holiday this weekend in the UK, too?

(When does school/university start up again?)

Anonymous said...

I giggled at the description of your new light/climbing tower.

I'm with RR, hope anyone having a long weekend is either very productive or very relaxed; ideally both.

I plan on cherishing to my liberal heart the horror some of my more annoying relatives would feel if they knew how very radical the history of this holiday they are celebrating is.

-fA

REReader said...

Oh, fA, it always gives me FITS when I see the very politicians who spend the rest of the year trying to abolish labor unions tweeting cheerful "Happy Labor Day"s, replete with American flags and other patriotic symbols!

Greg Lestrade said...

We had our long weekend last weekend.

Sherlock is back to school on Monday. Mycroft (to Sherlock's FURY) doesn't go until October. But he does have a lot to do before then!

REReader said...

Ah, well. I loved university (what I would call college and grad school) because I loved being able to study pretty much what I was interested in, but it was a lot of work. Not that that will be a comfort to Sherlock, but it's still true!

Greg Lestrade said...

It's work for us! Oxford have sent out a glossary so we can even understand what they need us/Mycroft to do...and I still don't understand some of it!

(Mycroft seems completely unruffled by it all though.)

REReader said...

Isn't it nice to have a family project! :D

Anonymous said...

RR,I would so LOVE to subject everyone I meet who tries to make Labor Day about jingoistic patriotism to a rant about Actual Labor History in the U.S.

But I also am trying to be a mature adult. So, ranty attacks are out, sad to say.

The new school year has already started here, for all ages. Good fortune to everyone embarking on theirs!

I've been watching video of the LondonsBurning event. Did you guys get out to see it? Beautiful (and horrifying).

Greg Lestrade said...

We did! Very interesting.

We then had the usual pre-school panic as we tried to find school uniform, bags, books, shoes etc.

Sherlock did have a nice day though.

REReader said...

Hurrah to a good start to the new school year!

Greg Lestrade said...

So, Mycroft is off to donate blood! What a wonderful young man he is. We are so proud of him.

Hey, L, I thought you'd like this one: they've named an asteroid after Freddie Mercury.

Tresta said...

Has Maf detached from John yet? I think she's very sweet.... On some level she may understand that John saved her.

I'm glad things are settling down into the school, routine. How is Sherlock doing with Being unable to see amycroft during the daytime? Do you all try to plan AMAZing adventures for the weekend to reward him when he's good? You all come up with some awesome family excursions!

Is Sherlock still into drawing? I've been meaning to ask what kind of colored pencils he likes. I have Prismacolor colored pencils, which are wax based and really smooth, but I think they may be harder to find in the UK. I do like Derwents too, and started drawing with a set of Derwents. They have many different kinds of colored pencils and I plan to try a few of all of them!

Tresta said...

Sorry Mycroft- it won't let me edit a comment! My tablet wanted to call Sherlock Asherlock too, and skip capitals, crazy thing!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock is still into his drawing. He's doing okay with school, even knowing Mycroft is at home. He does also know how 'boring' Mycroft is being with his studying.

Mycroft asked us if we'd sign up to Parkrun with him. So we have. All of us. Which is scary.

REReader said...

Sherlock has shown us some beautiful drawings--he certainly has an artist's eye for detail! Sherlock, if you ever have the urge, we'd love to see more... :)

I had to look up Parkruns--I mean, I could guess that they were runs in parks, but that's about all one can get from the name! They look like fun--if by "fun" you mean running for a bit over 3 miles, which is a distance I will walk, if no one is in a rush. :D

Joolz said...

That sounds like a fun idea. It's nice that you're all taking part in this one instead of some having to stand by and watch, though I'm sure racing to viewing points last time was exciting. Will the four of you make a race out of it or all pace yourselves to run together?

I saw this linked on some tweets earlier, & it's just brilliant & so true. :) http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2016/02/17/english-pronunciation-poem/#.V81yC6UXvgQ.twitter

Parkruns sound like a lot of fun to do together!

Will you break up into similar-speed groups, go every man for himself, or move in a group?

(I await the news that this renews your husband's desire to train for some long distance, grueling environment event.)

-fA

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know what we'll do. Sherlock has to run with one of us, so we'll see how it pans out.

Greg Lestrade said...

Having a very frustrating day at work. I need more coffee.

pandabob said...

That doesn't sound good! I hope someone can provide coffee AND cake and make you smile soon :-)

REReader said...

Oh, dear. I hope the day gets less frustrating and magical coffee appears...

Greg Lestrade said...

Despite 99% of West Mids force being here, I still lost an entire bunch of officers I needed.
Then interviewed a very annoying suspect. And found out things I needed have been archived off site.

Got home to find Mycroft had received all his sub fusc though. So smart.

REReader said...

That sounds like a shout-at-the-world type of day at work. :(

(I had to look up subfusc--we only have that for graduation ceremonies here, and usually anyone who isn't a full-time professor rents.)

Kestrel337 said...

I had to look up both parkruns and sub fusc. I'm disappointed that we don't have parkruns anywhere nearby.

I thought everyone here always rented their graduation robes/gowns, but every time I go to the thrift store there are a few in various colors. (The black ones make a great base for various halloween costumes)

Greg Lestrade said...

They have to wear it a lot at Oxford. I think firstly for their formal welcome dinner in halls and their enrolment (metriculation?) then for lots of exams and dinners and all sorts. And then I think they have to change it as they move through the years....or something...

Apropos of nothing anyone here is discussing, this women's final in the U.S. Open is a darn enjoyable match. I'm feeling a lot better about not getting to see Serena in the final. Hope you're watching Becca (and doing well!)

I quite like the idea of actually wearing gowns for things rather than just borrowing one for a few hours for a photo at the end :-)

Are you all enjoying your weekend Greg or is work a significant feature?

Greg Lestrade said...

It is a fairly significant feature.

If you must work, I hope there is some feeling of accomplishment, however minor. Hope you get some good family moments and a hug or two (not, ideally, from your team) to sweeten the struggle!

Hi fA, thanks for asking after me. I am definitely watching - and went a week ago - and enjoying it immensely. I'm having a small problem with my hips, thanks to an antibiotic, but other than that, I am doing well.

Becca said...

STAN THE MAN!!!!

REReader said...

Kestrel--I'm pretty sure the robes that end up in thrift stores here are because teens don't always get them back in time and a lot of the rental places are if you don't get them back by whatever time they're due, you've bought 'em.

(OTOH, profs do buy them, because they need them once or twice a year--and then there are the hoods they are entitled to wear when they earn advanced degrees.)

Anonymous said...

Becca you made me laugh! Wawrinka did it, yah?

The weather has gone pretty abruptly from "open windows at night, button everything up during the day" to "open shades and select windows during the day and button up at night". I may need to shut off the outdoor water in advance of frost soon. It's not like it gets used much with the drought water ban in effect.
