I thought I might be the only one voting yes in this poll. Interesting.
Sherlock got a new plaster this morning (Ariel) and a new boss for his bit of the security team - usually I think they switch around more, but Anthea's sticking more with Mycroft since she's going off to school with him in the autumn and seems to be thinking of promoting this other young woman. I don't know for certain of course, as she tells me nothing. It'll be odd to have someone else in charge.
Mycroft and Sherlock are at music lessons this afternoon, I've got the mess from the weekend cleaned up (did not find any frogs, bugs, or assorted rodents in Sherlock's room, only a sad looking violet in a paper cup), and I'm going to read on the sofa and possibly take a nap. It's going to be amazing. And sensible, since I once again got about two hours of sleep last night. If this keeps up, I'm going to have to...do something. I don't know.
For now, absolutely everyone is out (this never happens), and the whole house is quiet. It's almost eerie. I'm tempted to record it for posterity, but I think I'll make tea instead.

Can you get some sleep meds, just to get you through the bad patch? This seems like a particularly stressful time, with whatever L's got going at work as well as other stuff going on...and even under ideal circumstances it's absolute hell trying to take care of kids and maintain your sanity and patience while you're suffering badly from insomnia. (I speak from unfortunate experience. It's pretty much impossible not to snap at people toward the end of the day when you're that exhausted.)
Anyway, yeah, EXTREME sympathy from this corner. Enjoy your quiet while it lasts!
John, this is probably a stupid question, because you're asleep or something.
The Boss just ran out of the office like his arse was on fire, with his crash helmet but still in his suit, and I thought he shouted your name. So, well, I just wanted to make sure you and the boys were ok?
If you are, I'm sure he is. Probably just got a hot tip off on this case or something.
Like I said, probably a stupid question. And he'll kill me for telling you he's probably on the bike with no gear on.
Well. No, not exactly. The boys are fine - still at music lessons, but there's been a bit of a break in here.
I'm fine, and there's no one else at home, so, not to worry.
L - when you get here, assuming you stop to check your messages...you're not going to are you? Well, maybe you will.
Just, no surprise hugs from behind or untelegraphed touches or anything. I'm a bit keyed up after that, and I don't want to hurt you by accident.
And I suspect you weren't listening at the end of that phone conversation so I'll say it again - most of the blood really isn't mine.
A break in?? Do you want me to get an area car to you? Is the boss there yet? Did you get a good look at them? I can get cars there to search the area. And you're sure you're ok?
Blood? I'm sending a car. Hell, I'm on the way with a couple of the lads.
And an ambulance
One of them's unconscious on my floor, so I got quite a good look at him, yes. The other one got away. Think I got him in the arm from the window, but I can't be sure, I was a bit dizzy. Someone searching the area would be good, thanks.
Really don't need an ambulance.
Jesus! I've got units on the way, as soon as the boss gets there tell him to call and get the description out, they're waiting.
You got dizzy? Ambulance on the way, and we're coming too.
Get the description on the rt Sal? I want you lot doing the close search, back yards, shops. And don't cancel the bloody ambulance.
Mark from d&g is on way too.
John's...well, okay, ish.
I got hit over the head with a vase, I think the dizziness was probably expected. Don't worry, I have a hard head.
L's here.
Someone's going to have to pick the boys up soon ,and teh way Lestrade looks it's not going to be me.
John, Lestrade, is everything okay? Anthea is driving us back.
She says one of you should answer your phone.
Shall I call Mummy?
I'm honestly fine, love. Don't worry. I"m sure I'll see you soon.
Really?
Anthea says not to worry about Sherlock either. Another one of the cars has got him.
She's talking to Mummy right now.
Really. Cuts and bruises a little bump on the head, that's all. I promise.
Hug Sherlock for me when you see him, all right?
I am, it seems, going to hospital. L's pretty insistent and some of these probably do need stitches.
We're sweeping the area.
Is the boss going with you? His phone's engaged. Tell him India 99 is searching too.
Honestly, the downplaying of serious incidents in this family. Just cuts and bruises, oh yeah and some of the cuts need effing stitches. If the "bump on the head" is actually a concussion, Lestrade I want you to whack him when he's better.
Anthea says she's got everything under control and you're to go to hospital and not worry.
Sally - yeah he's with me. Talking to...not sure. The conversation's very policey though so it must be someone you know. I'll tell him.
Des - well a few of them were deeper than I thought at first. Scalp wounds do bleed excessively. Looks worse than it is.
thirdbird - expect I shall either sleep like the dead tonight or not at all.
...i think they're taking a rather dim view of using my phone right now. may have to go for a bit.
oh! sal get mrs hudson's # from L and get her to stay with the boys until their mum shows up thanks
Tell the boss to call me, his phone's still engaged. Two dog units on the way. Will someone be in the house? We need access.
John, be a good example and let a non-impaired doctor make the determination about treatment. (I'm a little dizzy and most of the blood isn't mine? Anyone else, you'd have in an ambulance with an MRI (or whatever you guys call it) ready to go.)
I hope the boys are going to someone who can dispense hugs along with (armed, I hope) protection.
Bloody hell!! ('Scuse the language!) So much for a quiet afternoon, I hope everyone's ok. Take care! x
Sal - yes, locals and security are here, i'm going with John. Others, including forensics are on the way.
Mycroft - John is mainly okay, but best to be safe. Mrs Hudson's going to meet you both and stay with you.
Anthea - work with the DCI on the way, please. he knows all about my side of things, so between you you should get it sorted.
Okay. Will you give John a hug from all of us, Sherlock says.
Course I will. Going to go quiet now, because I can't use my phone in the hospital, okay? We'll see you in a bit.
Hugs to the two of you, from both of us.
How come everyone is allowed stitches and I'm not
It's not fair
Can I see the blood and the smashed stuff?
!!!! That is scary. John, I'm very glad you're able to take care of yourself in a situation (as I imagine cuts and scrapes could've been much worse), and that the boys were out.
Any indication of what they wanted? Just a break-in (though "just" is relative), something re: the boys, or L's case? Sorry about all the questions; just worried.
Be safe, all of you, and feel better soon, John.
Sherlock, I think they're going to glue John's head back together. We're just waiting to see. It's what they did to mine last time.
And we're all going to stay at mine tonight, so no, no blood or smashed stuff.
Hopefully we won't be too late.
Wow. It's true that in the midst of my worst battles with insomnia I've wished that someone would just come along and knock me out forcibly with a hammer or something, but I think I'd be pretty upset if it actually happened...
Hope you're okay. Update when you can! And try and cadge some Ambien or something off someone at the hospital while you're there??
Big hugs to the boys. Including L.
Everyone - John is sort of okay. Battered, but nothing really serious, they say.
Sorry i'm only here on and off when I have to be on the phone dealing with things.
I'mm passing on your messages. He says thanks.
Hope you're all doing alright. It never seems to be just the one who's hurt who suffers. Good luck tonight to all y'all.
I must admit that something just occured to me. What happened to the dogs?
Christ. I'm glad John is mostly okay, and that the boys didn't witness what happened. I hope the place didn't get trashed too badly and that things settle down quickly.
L - waiting outside when you're ready to go.
Bloody hell.
Glad to hear that John isn't too badly injured. Hope you all have a big shmushy hug when you all get back to Lestrade's place.
Take care, all of you.
Where? They said they were observing you. I'm by the...ugly statue thing. You by the main entrance? You okay?
Yeah, by the main entrance, on a bench. Didn't really want to be there anymore.
But
Right, on way. sure you're ok to leave?
Quite sure.
Mycroft - we've got a taxi to mine. You lot come over whenever you're ready. Anthea's back at the house now, she'll organise getting clothes etc. to us.
Can we have pizza?
Are they going to keep our flat like it is so I can see it when we go home?
Would you mind if the dogs stayed with us in your flat, Lestrade?
I hate to dash your hopes, Sherlock, but I very much doubt the mess will still be there by the time you get back. Be kind and try not to pester John and Lestrade about it tonight- I'm sure they have enough on their minds right now, hey?
Pizza - yes.
Hopefully they'll tidy/clean, Sherlock. Sorry.
Mycroft, I think we'd all feel better if the dogs came and stayed here with us, yes. Remind Anthea to bring their bowls and food, please.
And both of you, please be calm and quiet around John. No jumping on him or anything, right? He's a bit...bruised. And has a headache.
And I look a bit odd. Don't let it worry you.
How odd? Like a monster with your whole head all stitched together and a bolt in your neck to keep it on?
Some stitches, some bruises, definitely no bolt. Were the bolts really there to keep the monster's head on?
Sherlock, give it a rest.
Ring my mobile when you need letting in the building.
Make what rest?
Why else would there be bolts?
We're nearly there. Mummy said she wanted to come and talk to you too.
I've never understood the bolts myself. Besides which, I resent the Frankenstein movies for turning the creature into a speechless, lumbering thing. The conversations between the Creature and Frankenstein were the best parts of the book!
Oh dear. All right.
Dunno, to conduct the electrical current? Bolts just seem impractical for attaching flesh to flesh. If they were screwed into the spine somehow maybe, but just sitting on the outside of his neck? I don't buy it.
Mummy said she didn't say that, she said she wanted to talk to you two. Why do they sound the same and mean different things? That's silly.
Lestrade said ages ago he had bolts in him to keep him together. Is he a monster? And that means the monster could have.
Because the English language is ridiculous.
No, Lestrade's not a monster. You can tell cause the bolts weren't in his neck.
There were no bolts. A few screws. Most of which now removed. Different thing, Sherlock.
And tell your Mum I'll talk to her outside.
right okay, so, say you've got a broom handle, broken in hafl iwth a watermelon stuck on one end. And you want to attach the halves together. Do you brace it horizaontalyl or vertically, is what i'm saying. Boltsgoing straight through his neck don't make much sense.
I'm not sure that made as much sense as I hoped it would. Maybe L should talk to Mrs Holmes on his own.
I'd get a new broom handle. They sell them on the high street.
And I wouldn't put a watermelon on it, that's silly.
I'm definitely talking to her on my own. You're staying in here and resting.
You might have escaped hospital, but don't think you'll be doing a bloody thing apart from taking it easy.
Okay. Tell her I'm sorry.
I might...if I had even the first bloody clue what you had to be sorry for.
should've got them both.
You're...I'm not even going to argue.
You shouldn't ever have even been in the situation. You were amazing. You've got nothing to be sorry for.
I'll be back in in a minute. Try to keep Sherlock away from the...supplies, in the bedroom, if he gets that far.
right, good plan.
maybe more than a minute.
Have the boys finished the pizza?
Down to the last crust. What are you two talking about out there?
Security issues. Sort of.
There might be some ice cream in the freezer. Ask Mycroft to have a look if they want some.
Sort of?
Sherlock wants to know if there's biscuits somewhere too, to stick in the ice cream?
sorry, can only reply when she's on her phone.
Get Mycroft to look in the cupboard, might be some ginger nuts or something.
Risk assessment, you could call it
I'm sorry, I know it's completely inappropriate, but I can't help giggling at the thought of the conversations that would follow Sherlock stumbling across your "supplies".
*ahem* Sorry.
I'm glad everyone's safe and reasonably well. Hope there's been a lot of hugging.
And I forgot to say earlier - Sally, you're a star.
Anon - only funny if it's not you doing the explaining!
L - I've moved the supplies for safe keeping and put Sherlock to bed. Mycroft's following him as soon as you get back in.
Agreed with Nameless -- Sally, you're awesome. You deserve pizza and ice cream (or something stronger) yourself.
Call me a worrier, but the vague "risk assessment" comment has me concerned. But I suppose that's just the omission of what/whom is being assessed.
John, you sound a smidge loopy; hope you get a chance to rest soon.
Back in a mo.
Mrs H can say goodnight to the boys, too, for once.
X - just police jargon.
And John is going to rest as soon as I sort out the sofa bed, any minute now.
risk assessment
You know what, for once I'm not going to worry abotu it. Not trill tomorrow. If L and Mrs H and Anthea can't sort it out between them the world's probably going tto end before I wake up anyway.
I remember my parents attempting to explain certain "supplies" to me when I was a tiny child. It's always amusing looking back on such incidents and thinking, 'Oh, so that's what that was...'
I'm glad everyone's alive and relatively unharmed, and I really hope everyone sleeps well! (Assuming that Danger is being allowed to sleep. It would be the height of iniquity if he can't due to concussion concerns.)
The world's not going to end. Now get your head down and sleep. And yes, I do have to wake you up a few times in the night to check on your head.
Soon as I've got the boys settled I'll be right back with you. There's painkilers and water on the coffee table. Anthea's crew are...God knows where, but surrounding the place, by the sounds of it. Sal's sorted the area car to cruise by as often as they can.
You wouldn't be much safer if you slept in fort Knox.
can't think it was me they were after anyway. you and the boys are much more likely targets. just their badluck, or bad plannign.
Oh good :) As a military brat I'm familiar with the term, but wasn't sure if it needed Lestrade to English translating here.
Hope you all have a good sleep tonight.
Bad luck and bad planning on someone's part, yeah.
X...maybe it does. I don't know.
John is asleep fairly soundly now. Little restless.
John is asleep fairly soundly now. Little restless.
And how are you holding up?
L - After the day you all have had, I'll bet you're looking forward to a little rest as well.
Is there anyone you can ask to wake John up a few of the times tonight so you can get some rest? Sleeping with an insomniac doesn't make for restful sleep, and you must be wiped out.
Hugs to all of you. (Including the dogs. Speaking of which, where were they when all this was going on?)
Your attackers must have been away the day they did "case the joint" in bad guy school. Should have been rather obvious that the boys were not there and that the house was not empty.
So neither kidnapping nor installing of things was going to be on the agenda.
Probably a good thing Mrs Hudson didn't intercept them.... Not that I would wish hand to hand two against one on John, but I think he did a good job compared to what might have happened to her.
Oh my god! Well, I'm kind of late here, but wow, I'm amazed. John's incredible! I'm glad Sally and everyone else acted so quickly, but I'm sorry John got hurt. :( So much for a calm afternoon! I hope you catch the other guy. I assume Sherlock wasn't scared, but I hope he isn't wagging. :)
You're a star Lestrade for making sure all your boys are settled and safe (as safe as possible).
John, you may feel like you should have got them both but the fact that you "got" any is miles ahead of what most mere mortals would have managed. Mostly I'm relieved that you've survived as well as you have.
Okay, given the circumstances?
Which is probably as good as you get, given the circumstances.
I hope the boys are okay. Sherlock was all about the blood and gore and stitch envy, but it might be sinking in now, especially if John looks injured. And Mycroft was clearly... well, is "upset" the right word? Concerned, with a subtext of upset, perhaps.
tl;dr - Worrying about you all a bit right now, sending good thoughts.
Wow. I can't even begin... I'm glad you're okay, John. I'd be far less able to type out assurances if I'd been hit over the head with a vase. What in the world happened?
Enjoy your pizza, Sherlock, and be sure to give John a very big piece. Pizza heals almost everything.
Nameless - Sherlock was pretty upset in the night. Mycroft was very good with him, but in the end I brought him in so sleep in the sitting room with John. Seemed to settle him, knowing John was there and safe. They ended up in some almighty tangle of bedclothes.
Mycroft's quiet, and asking a few questions - most of which J will have to answer when he's awake - he's being even more adult than usual. But he did just let me give him a hug when I was making them breakfast. Which I think is a good sign.
I think he read my post from...whenever I wrote it. In the night. So I promised him I wasn't leaving.
Amazing how things can seem such a good idea in your head, and then when someone else (their Mum) says it...it seems like a bloody awful one.
I'm guessing that Mycroft being more adult than usual is his way of coping with bad situations? The acceptance of a hug sounds like a good sign to me.
I'm glad you were able to reassure him. It's important that you can write about whatever you want, get some of it out of your head, without the boys worrying that you're about to do something rash.
Yeah, it is. And him agreeing to a hug - especially from me. It's good, because it shows he feels he can, and sort of hard, because it shows that however brave a face he's putting on things, he is upset. I know he'll be talking about all this with Anthea, too, which is also good.
It's amazing, really, after everything they've been through, that they trust us as much as they do.
Sorry if I'm not making masses of sense. Think I have an IQ of about 2 at the moment.
(i think it might be time to change the name of your blog, love)
*hugs*
In addition to the name of the blog, is it just me or does the poll that just started seem a little ironic too?
Yes and no are such stark answers. I think I'll qualify mine by saying sometimes violence is a necessary part of/step to solving something, but it doesn't usually solve it all by itself.
Hope you are all a little more settled now...
And "Disjointed Thoughts" for a post that ends up with John commenting while concussed? It's practically prescient.
