So, to sum up: Lestrade's moving in with us, officially, and letting out his flat, which is wonderful, and I get what I suspect is a really stupid grin whenever I think about it.
We had a very nice holiday, full of sand and sea and stars, but mainly, I've discovered in doing the wash today, sand. Phobos and Deimos keep looking mournfully at Mycroft, as if to ask why he moved the sea and all those convenient strangers they could terrify into giving them bits of sandwich.
Mycroft's off to school on the 6th, which is suddenly very very soon, so we're starting to get organised for that. His mum sent him the new computer he wanted. Here's a picture with a tea mug for scale:
It looks like a toy. Admittedly, that's a large mug, but still, it's tiny. He begged off going to the park with Sherlock and I this afternoon so he could play with it - and by play I mean install a whole other operating system [It's called Ubuntu.] (right, yes, that), and probably void the warranty.
[Bronwyn, I did check while we were at Harrow; their network has no problem with Apple hardware. I might have minor difficulties as Linux is not a widely used OS among students there, but I don't believe they will be insurmountable. -MH]
In conclusion...Lestrade? If I peel all the garlic, can we have this for dinner?

That looks delicious! I'm on the tail end of a cold and lots of garlic sounds amazing.
Setting up a laptop is so much fun. You get to organize everything from scratch and set up the software just the way you like it.
It does look good, doesn't it? Except I've just watched again and caught the part about it cooking for two hours, so it might need to be another night if we want to eat at a reasonable hour. Either that or attempt to make it myself.
Or use a pressure cooker, but I would be surprised if you had one.
We don't, no. There are enough things around here that can explode without buying one on purpose.
That is a good point! I hadn't thought of alternate uses.
Wow, that does look like a lot of garlic. I have a recipe for chicken with 40 cloves of garlic and I'm terrified to try it, although I love garlic to bits.
Glad you got the laptop you wanted, Mycroft. New gadgets are always such fun. When is the first day of school?
Sorry, I've been snowed under, only just seen this, and my phone won't show me that video. But from your comment, I doubt we;d eat before ten if I need to get home, prep it and cook for 2 hours.
It's all right, I'm making it. Well. All right may be premature, but it hasn't gone horribly wrong yet and all it has to do now is simmer. Which I think it's doing.
Really? Right, brilliant! You're amazing. I'm a bloody lucky bloke.
Mycroft, your computer looks amazing. Glad you've got it in time to set it up before school.
Mazarin, we're meant to move in 6 September, though classes don't start that day.
Don't say that till you taste it. It does smell like garlic though, so probably that means I can't have gone too far wrong? Let's hope. Are you home soon?
I'm sure its great. Yeah, when will it be ready (still don't know what 'it' is, by the way. On phone, cane see OT)
I'll leave as soon as poss
Can't see it, I meant.
Oh! Right, sorry. Braised beef with garlic. Lots and lots of garlic. I think it's Chinese. And there's rice, and Mycroft's making green beans. Should be ready by 8:30, maybe before. I hope before.
Sounds lovely.
If I'm not back and its ready, start without me. But I'll try. Sorry, not what I meant to happen on our first proper day back and living together and everything.
It's all right, I think it'll heat up pretty well. How's work? Insane?
Yeah, pretty much. Picked to a few cases when I was off. Had a moment of near calm earlier when I directed traffic for a bit, around our forensic unit. Lots of abuse, too, but took me back to being a bobby.
Long time lurker, just popping in to say I bought some Marmite at the supermarket today, having never tried it before and am now very much in the 'I heart Marmite' club! Tried it on some nice crusty bread and also made some Marmite-y grilled cheese. Yum!
Danger, leaving now. Sorry. Be with you soon
John, I'm glad you guys had a great vacation, and things are going well! That recipe looks great, you'll have to let us know how it turns out. When it gets a bit cooler, I'll have to give it a try. I love garlic!
Mycroft, your computer looks awesome. I'm amazed at how small it is!
Dottie - I think you're the only person who's tried it for the first time and liked it so far.
Pip - it's good! I'm shocked. At least, Sherlock and Mycroft say it's good and L should be rendering his verdict soon.
Bloody lovely.
So when's the big shopping spree for Mycroft's uniform? After Nicky's?
Oh good.
Yeah, I think so. On the way back, or maybe the day after. It'll have to be soon with all those bloody tags to sew in.
Yeah.
Ugh, paperwork will be the death of me. Sorry, don't mean to be so boring.
It's all right, I'm just going to watch whatever this is and doze on you anyway.
Was a thing about ... nature of some sort. Now a bad 80s movie.
Won't be too much longer.
Sometimes I wonder if there's any point going on holiday when work hits like this as soon as you're back.
Jesus, there were so many autocorrected words in that if made no sense.
One would think they'd be able to manage a little better without you.
They tell me it's nice to feel wanted...
I dunno. I suppose everyone's off on holidays and no one wants to take on the extra.
I'm going to have to stop anyway, going cross eyed
Bed?
Might need a minute watching mindless tv to slow my brain down a bit, first.
What in god's name are we watching? I must've actually dozed off because last I remember there were snakes.
I think the blond bloke is killing people because of some old family feud. And the other one is trying to stop him, but there's more to it...he probably know something. And she might be his daughter. And its all set in the future. On another planet. Which is why they're dressed oddly
Oh right. Makes perfect sense now.
Yeah... right. Bed? I'd rather stare at the ceiling than this crap.
Bed is good.
Sweet dreams you two <3
Mycroft: Are you excited yet? I am, for you! I mean, I'm nervous you'll be a bit nervous, but I also know this is going to be fantastic for you. Just think, a whole new network for you to terrorise!
Cheers, Tink. Sweet dreams a bit hard to come by right now. Am in the stage of being so annoyed at myself for not sleeping when I'm knackered that I'm making it less and less likely that I will sleep...
Haha, Mycroft and I have the same computer. Well, sort of. He probably has the newer one with the backlit keys.
And the eternal question: Does Linux run Portal? Hmmmm....
(Another lurker...)
Hope the OS install went well, Mycroft. You're going from annoying to complex, so maybe not so bad. New computers are the best. The good and bad of Linux is that it's so customizable -- with luck the challenges will stay fun instead of annoying.
Sleep has an awful habit of staying just out of reach when you need it. ):
Hey excellent, Mycroft! I do like Ubuntu. I cannot tell you how excited I was when I got hold of the first version of a Linux GUI. Such fun. I have, sadly, had to give it up because my work has managed to build a network that will NOT talk to my laptop. Thus, I had to go to Windows 7. *sad sigh* Also, tragically, we underwent a major network overhaul this summer and everything is sketchy. I had to access the administrative server in order to grant myself printing rights in my office. We won't discuss whether or not I'm actually supposed to do that, but anyway. People who don't want their servers accessed shouldn't leave their passwords lying around. To make life even more interesting, the administration had some sort of mad apple-gasm and gave us all iPads without making sure the network could handle the inevitable uptick in usage as everyone was suddenly online all the time.
Long story short, I'm glad your laptop will work at school, and I wish my school worked with my laptop.
TTFN,
Bronwyn
Wasn't there a garlic-laden pizza on Valentine's Day? John, I applaud you for making the significant dates in your life with Lestrade garlic-filled.
I started on Slackware, I'm now Fedora on the main box because I've been earning my living with RedHat for years. Got into it well before Debian was even vaguely usable. I can't stand Ubuntu, just annoys me too much. My Mac Air is running Lion and happy with it, I can compile anything I need while everything else just works when asked.
But if you really want geek credits, you should try Crux...
Greg: I hope you got to sleep, I'm thinking sleepy thoughts at you anyway. Try to think thoughts that are not about going to sleep? But happy snuggley ones? Like about John?
Bronwyn: *glomphugs* Hi! I've missed you while I've not been here! Hope all is well with you :D
... I feel like such a bad geek. The whole computer language thing goes right over my head. Alas!
John, I hear you on the sand. I was just at the beach for about an hour and a half and the amount of sand was huge. And that was just one seven year old!
Jenn ( and Harry, who pretended to be a sea-turtle and crawled belly down from the start of the sand to the ocean, thus the surfeit of sand)
Hey Tink,
All is well with me, indeed! School starts tomorrow for us - woohoo! So I've been setting up my websites and cleaning my skulls. It's going to be a whirling dervish of crazy. And now to sleep.
Toodle,
Bronwyn
P.S. Bonus points to anyone who knows where the term "whirling dervish" really came from.
Sabrinaphynn - compared to what Sherlock could have brought back with him, I think we'll take the sand...better than creatures - alive or dead - or anything else.
Tink - cheers, got a bit of sleep. And only got to work today, drop work off in the morning if I take it home tonight, and then we're off to the Westcountry.
All of you - don't understand a word of your computer talk, but I'm sure Mycroft appreciates it.
L - if you have trouble sleeping again tonight, wake me up? I mean, if you want to. Maybe I could help.
Thanks.
Just thinking about having a lot to do, that's all. Nothing bad.
And you need sleep just as much as I do. Don't want to ruin your night.
Just if you want to, love. That's all I'm saying. And it wouldn't ruin my night.
How's work?
Right, thanks. I might.
Busy. I've just got so much to do to try to stop it all growing exponentially when I'm away for the weekend. If I can pretty much clear my desk today then at least I'm not getting further behind.
At the stage of having so many things to do my brain is paralysed and I'm not doing any of them. and people keep asking me things, and I've got to brief all the teams before I go again. I need extra hours in the day.
I'll get Mrs H to work on that.
Make lists? I dunno, that always helps me.
yeah. good idea.
what are you up to? weather's meant to be better this afternoon. Better meaning 'not raining'. I think sun may be too much to ask for...
I think we might go to Highgate Cemetery. Seems like the sort of thing they'd both enjoy, if for different reasons.
right. You know half of it you can only go in with a tour? I forget which half.
I'm sure they would both enjoy it a lot. I did tell Sherlock about the Highgate Vampire a while ago. He wasn't very impressed. 'Not as good as a murder', apparently.
Well, what is, as far as he's concerned?
Can't decide whether to do the tour or not. It would be interesting, but I'm sure Sherlock would have...many questions for the poor guide. Anyhow, leaving now, wish us luck.
True.
Maybe do the other half today, then see what questions Sherlock comes up with, and if it's safe to unleash him on a tour guide?
Good luck. Sure you'll have a great time.
Let me know when you're on your way back home.
If John drops me off when we're done, can I ride back with you? I brought my helmet and jacket and everything.
Of course. You'll have to wear my bag on your back, if that's okay with you? Paperwork, laptop and everything won't all fit in the tank bag. Call or something when you leave Highgate. Or before, if you'd rather I came and picked you up than John and Sherlock come all the way down to the Yard, just to go back up to home again.
Have a nice time.
That would be great; thank you!
As I'm assuming this is some plan the three of you have cooked up to get me out of my office before midnight, I can't really put you all out by trekking about London unnecessarily, can I?
Depending on traffic we can get home a long way around.
It was solely my plan, but John probably grasped its secondary purpose. I do also really want to go for a ride though.
We'll go the very long way around then. I want to go for a ride too.
Did you get the Bluetooth headset out of John's helmet and put it in yours?
Of course.
Yeah, sorry
Ha. Yeah, he's not me, you know. ;)
Didn't mean that
I know, it's all right. And I probably would need the reminder anyway!
We're almost done incidentally, if you want to head this way.
Sorry, I know.
Right, just got to pack some things, then i'll head up there.
John - I expect Orio's still out on his bike, but anyway, you can probably answer most of my questions.
Do you think you'll be here in time for lunch tomorrow? Is there anything you or the boys don't like to eat? And do I need to buy anything for the dogs?
Also, I was thinking we should go to a nice pub outside the city for lunch on Sunday, and then carry on to go and see Mum, if you'd all like that? Just let me know. I haven't told Mum about the two of you moving in together - I thought Orio should tell her that.
Looking forward to seeing you all!
Have a fun ride Mycroft. I'm more than a little jealous of you.
Nicky - late lunch, yes, I think so. Apart from marmite I'll eat anything, and the boys pretty much will too. They're not crazy about beans in general (not green beans, I mean the other sort), but if there's cheese involved they'll eat them anyway. We'll bring all the dogs' things, don't worry. :)
That sounds lovely, yeah. We're all looking forward to it too, and thanks so much for having us!
Okay, brilliant.
Carla is bouncing around like a mad thing - she can't wait for you all to get here!
I thought all the kids could sleep downstairs, in the conservatory at the back. Although Paul's room will be empty, if Sherlock needs to go to bed earlier or anything. Though I get the feeling he'll resist that offer.
You and Orio can share Carla's room. She's been tidying all day! (Which is something of a miracle. I just hope you don't mind being stared at by posters of boybands.)
There's a park just down the road, if the dogs need a run around after being stuck in the car for the journey, too.
Perfect! The boys will love it, and it'll keep the dogs from getting too much underfoot as well if they sleep there with them. Sherlock... Yeah, very likely to resist, heh. It'll be good to have the option though. You've seen how he gets when he's overtired.
Cheers, Sis.
You can tell Mum about me moving in with John if you want, though. Not entirely sure I want to be there when she finds out.
Danger, what's for dinner?
Ummm. Given the contents of our fridge...takeaway? I didn't want to do serious shopping when we're just leaving again.
yeah, fine, good.
I just need to do some work. Are the boys packed? Seems like you've worked some sort of laundry miracle to get Sherlock clean and dried clothes in two days.
I think I've washed nearly everything we own. All packed, yeah. Sherlock very nearly managed it by himself, apart from packing more books and things than socks and underwear, which has now been corrected.
You doing all right?
That's because socks and pants appear magically in Sherlock's life, via you and Mrs Hudson. He doesn't need to think about such mundane things.
Although I think I'm guilty on relying on that too, sometimes.
Yeah, I'm all right. Well...half left ;) Just need to do all this, to drop at the Yard tomorrow before we go.
Half left, oh god... Terrible!
I don't mind, it's good to be useful.
My jokes come with no guarantee of quality.
You're not just useful. You're indispensable. (I tried four times to get that spelt right.) Without you I think my grasp on my sanity would be weakening by the second.
You're a wonderful, brilliant, man.
Thank you, love. So are you.
Bronwyn, all I can think of are the whirling dervish dancers from Turkey. Don't know if that satisfies your bonus points requirement. :)
Have a lovely weekend, you guys! It was tornados and earthquake aftershocks from the States here this week and the edge of a hurricane hitting us this weekend (not, thankfully in one of the evacuation zones) so I'm planning to stay curled up with tea and blankets away from the windows. Huzzah Ontario. I'll be looking forward to enjoying your adventures vicariously.
Terribly late comment, but I haven't had internet since Tuesday, so whatever.
Mycroft, I'm glad to see you're joining the ranks of the Ubuntu users! I have run an assortment of Linu distros on my old netbook (an Asus EEE 901, which I have since taken half apart and replaced most of the innards) and I run Ubuntu on my desktop. I quite like it, right up until I have to do any graphics editing.
While Ubuntu doesn't run Portal, there are some rumors that Steam may be coming out for Linux at some point - they released Steam for Macs last year, I think, so most of the heavy coding work for the PC to Linux conversion should already be done.
