open

Nameless wanted to know: What impact do you think that blogging so openly about your life has had on you?

Blogging about what we do and where we go and so on...oddly, I don't think it's had much effect at all. Occasionally someone will mention the blog, and I think it's getting slightly wider play now than it used to, but I think L probably gets more fallout from it than I do.

Apart from that, I'm not really sure how open I've been, to be honest. I mean, I do try, and I think I'm better than I used to be, but on the whole, this expressing one's emotions business...I'm not at all good at it. And I try a lot harder with L in person than I do on here.

Even so, I think it's been good for me. It's certainly been easier than I expected, in a lot of ways. You hear a lot about the way people behave online and I thought I'd get a lot more criticism from people than I have. Instead, nearly every person who's commented here has been more kind and understanding than I had any reason to expect. Thank you. It makes things easier, a bit, especially this month when some of these entries have felt like slowly pulling out my own intestines. (No one should feel guilty about that, by the way. It's my own choice to do them.)

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that  I think it's good practice for being more open with L and the boys, and I really need the practice. It wasn't something I thought of as at all important up to now. Which, looking back on my life, explains a lot.

Well, I'd just like to say thank you for your efforts in the past year. Letting us into your life can't have been easy.

Also? Love the new background. :D

Thanks.

Nice, right? They have a lot better autumn ones than summer ones. Well. Than summer ones without flowers anyway.

Love the new background, John!

Also, thank you for sharing as much of yourself as you have. It's been a real joy reading about your adventures raising the boys and watching your relationship grow with Lestrade.

Everyone here is lovely, aren't they?

I hope you've never tried to pull your intestines out...

You do fine, you know? I know you don't always think you do, but...I do understand. And sometimes I wish I was more like you - more considered and careful about what I do say, before I wedge my foot in my mouth.

As long as you know I'm always here, if you do want to talk then...well, that's all. I am. If you want.

Love you.

ps. can we have your background as wallpaper?

John, I think you tell us more about yourself than you are necessarily aware of, and I for one am delighted to have "met" you and to thankful that you share as much as you do.

And here's another "Like" vote for the new background! I love the colors.

Pip and RR - thanks. You're very kind people.

L - Heh. And sometimes I wish I were more like you. Or Sherlock, with his ability to dump everything he's feeling all over everyone and then throw things till he feels better.

I am. If you want.

I know. Thank you. I am trying, and it is easier than it used to be, though I'm not sure that shows.

can we have your background as wallpaper?

Fond as I am of our Lovecraftian horror, it might brighten the place up a bit.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sometimes I think we all want to be a little more like Sherlock.

It does show.

We should decorate your room. Our room. Having done the boys', the kitchen...well, ours could at least get a lick of paint.

We'd have to sedate this wallpaper before getting it off the wall. And then dispose of it humanely.

John H. D. Watson said...

By humanely I'll assume you mean burying it at midnight at a crossroads with a stake through its heart.

What'd you have in mind for our room?

Thank you John :-)

I think you possibly show more of yourself than you might realise sometimes, but a lot of that comes down to reading between the lines. Thanks for sharing as much as you do with us. I'm glad you find it useful, if only as practice for sharing with Lestrade and the boys.

And another "like" here for your new background; gorgeous colours, nicely understated.

Oh, you know, wipe-clean rubber walls, a sex swing, some D-rings, a four poster and a lot of pegs to hang the paddles and harnesses from.

I don't know, love, I assumed we'd discuss it. Even if we just freshen up what's there. I'm fairly sure the paintwork is older than Mycroft.

Lestrade, I will laugh if Sherlock asks what a sex swing or D-rings are.

Your tag may say "I have the best blog readers", but that's because you are such a great blog writer. (And, Lestrade, you are too).

John H. D. Watson said...

L - all right, I was only asking! We'll discuss it then!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, I'm being a sarcastic bastard.

I'm going to take myself to bed where the world can ignore me for a few hours. I might even manage to stay out of trouble.

REReader said...

When my brother was a toddler, he had this tee shirt that said "Be nice to me, I've had a hard day".

I think you could use one of those. :)

(And the last place you'd ever stay out of trouble would be in bed. ;) )

John H. D. Watson said...

It's all right, I just thought you might have some ideas, that's all.

Do you want company?

Greg Lestrade said...

I do. And yes, company would be nice. Sorry I'm grumpy. Talk about paint is a safe enough topic though, I think?

Sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's fine, love. Don't worry. Bed then?

Blimey, Lestrade - I'm grumpier and snarkier than that when I've had a *good* day. I think John's willing to cut you a bit of slack when you've had a crappy one.

Hope you feel better after a good night's sleep. Etc.

I'd offer internet hugs, Lestrade, but something tells me that you're about to get much better hugs than I can provide.

John, I'm glad it's been a little better for you. Even thousands of miles away, it's obvious how much you love Lestrade and the boys. I can only imagine how much they see it with you right.there.

REReader said...

(Did my comment about the tee shirt come across snarky? I didn't mean it that way.)

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad one that the D-ring comment made me think of binders, first. The uberkind you get when you've got 400+ pages to hold.

*shakes head at self* Obviously I get it from the context, but all the same...

Desert Wanderer said...

I just don't understand why Lestrade wants to go rock.climbing in their room. Surely there's some place in London where there's a good wall to climb?

*giggling at the comments* Oh, how you both manage to keep your blogs family-friendly is amazing.

John, you're a wonderful blogger, and I'm a firm believer that honesty attracts honest reactions. Like others have said, it's been a joy to watch you, Greg, and the boys become a family (security team included).

Also, I'm loving the new wallpaper and extra hugs for Greg. I hope the case works out.

The openness thing is tricky, especially when you haven't got a lot of practice. I'm glad you have people to practice on.

Calliope said...

Hey. How's the pond doing over at Sherlock's school? Hope you both got some good sleep with minimal flying knees and elbows courtesy of a certain genius.

Finally thought of a question for you, John!

It's a well recorded FACT that Medical students throw the best/most outrageous parties. So can we have a story from your uni days please!
