Klein bottles:
This is one of a series of glass Klein bottles made by Alan Bennett in 1995 for the Science Museum, London. It consists of three Klein bottles, one inside another. A Klein bottle is a surface which has no edges, no outside or inside and cannot properly be constructed in three dimensions. In the series Alan Bennett made Klein bottles analogous to Mobius strips with odd numbers of twists greater than one.
I've always liked Klein bottles, and I like these particularly. The more you look at them, the more confusing they get.
We have been swimming. Sherlock worked on his diving for a while and then worked on hurling himself into the water and making as big a splash as possible. He's now decided he wants to go kayaking, preferably on the Thames, but he says the ocean would do. Just like that. 'I suppose the ocean would do.' I said I'd consider it, but definitely not on the Thames. You would think he's heard enough stories from L by now to not want any chance of getting that water in his mouth.
Mycroft's gone to walk the dogs and invited Sherlock along. When last seen, Mycroft had said he knew more of pi than Sherlock did, Sherlock declared he didn't, but even if he did, pi was pointless...and so on. I'm just going to enjoy the peace and quiet for a bit.

The more things I find out you've 'always liked' the more I suspect you meeting these boys was destiny...
I've always liked Arsenal, marmite, and the colour grey. Not mind bending science stuff.
And quiet? During the holidays? The apocalypse is surely brewing...
I can just about wrap my brain around Mobius strips--I've played with them and that helps. Klein bottles give me the strongest urge to handle them, to manually follow the one side all the way through (which of course you can't usually do, because of the narrow bits). The ones in the photo are amazing!
Yay for splashing! (Although not splashing Thames water. :))
I hope Mycroft and Sherlock enjoy they tussle over the merits of knowing many places of pi... ;D
L - all right, not always. I didn't know they existed until I was eight, but since then...
I love finding out these little things about you :)
I once knitted someone a Klein Bottle hat: http://www.kleinbottle.com/klein_bottle_hats.htm
And I frequently knit möbius scarves, although the thought of woolly hats and scarves in this heat is not good

Ha, those hats are pretty great. Though, yes, the thought of wearing them today is...not pleasant.
Danger...seriously? Your own blog thinks you're spam again? Beginning to worry it knows something about you that I don't!
Want to go for a run?
Can we make this PLEASE
http://cakefixation.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/how-to-make-fire-breathing-dragon-cake.html
that looks amazing Sherlock :-D
...
I have never seen anything like that. Never! (And I know a number of people--including my mother, my aunt, and a niece--who decorate cakes.) Wow!
(It looks like it would take a week to make. At LEAST! Amazing.)
We went for a run.
And my blog has spammed me twice now. I think it's staging a revolt.
(and that cake looks amazing. I hope L says yes...)
I...will have to think about it, Sherlock.
Are you feeling better today Greg? less tired and grumpy or is the world still being a pain?
Yeah, I am actually! Probably helps I'm off tomorrow. Although I'd probably get more rest if I were at work ;)
That's great news :-D
Good luck with surviving tomorrow ;-) I hope you all enjoy the time together :-)
Well, John's working - but hopefuly not too much.
Sherlock wants to learn how to skateboard...
I'm not sure the rest of Sherlock's holiday plans will go well with a broken arm so I hope he susses skateboarding better than some kids do!
good luck with work John, I have a feeling it might be nice to have a work break after a few days of holiday ;-)
A few hours spent with people who are not allowed to leap on me from a height sounds fairly relaxing right now, I admit...
..hang on, criminals aren't allowed to leap on you from height? Is that a special doctor thing, or a new rule they just didn't tell us about...
I'm feeling slightly jealous John ;-)
It's a special doctor thing. That's what you lot are there for, to get leapt on. ;)
mmm. worryingly true.
The Thames is okay, for canoeing. You just don't want to end up in any of the grim backwaters, where bodies wash up. I'm fine after my last dip, because it was in the tidal/flowing part. I mean...it's not the greatest, in London. But we could get out to the countryside a short way and you can swim in it and all sorts.
Kayaks tip over though. I don't like the thought of him going face first into it. Out of the city is different - he was talking about searching under the bridges for bodies.
yeah, no searching for bodies.
But we could go up to Hurley Lock or somewhere, I bet we could swim and maybe hire canoes or a boat up that way.
Sounds nice.
we'll talk to the boys about it. Sherlock will have to promise to listen to us and not do anything dangerous... even if he doesn't think it is dangerous. :)
At least he can swim...
bed?
Bed, yes. I could sleep for a week, which means I'm sure to get a call at seven tomorrow.
And leapt on for adventures and breakfast at 5, yeah...
I'm not sure what leads you to worry that Sherlock might tip his kayak over....
Ella
Kayaking is great fun, especially now that they have more open ones. My friend has two of them that can lash together, and they've got pedals for when you want to just laze along without paddling. It's a very grown up sort of kayaking though. Probably boring to certain temperaments.
Practicing what to do when you fall out of a canoe or kayak makes good sense. Doing it before you actually go on a river would be helpful. (Guess when my scout troop decided would be a good time to practice? That's right.) And if you have along a backpack or something, tie it in, no matter how much you plan not to turn over, and even if you're only going "a little ways."
The dragon cake is amazing, but I wonder how it tastes. The klein bottles are also amazing. They always make me want to pour water in and watch it escape.
They managed to call John out just before 7! Some nightshifter got off the hook there!
Oh dear! is John home again now?
I hope you're all having fun and that you're enjoying the weather on a day when you don't have to live in a suit :-)
Not yet.
I'm sitting at the top of the stairs playing my guitar. I have filled the next stairs up and the corridor with string taped to the walls and tied to the bannister. Sherlock is treating them like lasers, and trtying to steal the priceless artifact at the end of the laser maze.
He has failed thus far. The treasure is an IOU note he can exchange for an ice cream sundae.
You have the best ideas for entertaining your young man :-)
Enjoy your guitar playing :-)
Training him to be a genius master criminal? Might not be a good idea! He has finally got through. We're going out with the dogs now.
It could be training to be a genius master spy, going after world-saving secrets. :)
Have fun! *wants ice cream*
are you still eating ice cream gents? ;-)
and more importantly did you enjoy your day at work John? I'm assuming you escaped at some point :-)
that klein bottle site is amazing. I may have to try to knit one myself.
