Today, we went to see butterflies. It seemed like they were everywhere. They landed on your hair, he landed on your arm, and one landed on L's nose. I wish I had a picture of that one. We do have pictures of a lot of them, although none with the boys in them can be posted here, of course. And I don't have them to post because I haven't got them off the camera and...I'm too lazy to do it right now.
Sherlock was desperate for more land on him, but he was his usual self, a little manic ball of energy, always moving. It didn't encourage anyone to get too close, including butterflies. He did get a few, but Mycroft got more simply by standing still. I think he had five on him at one point.
The whole experience was so incredibly strange. Something about interacting with wild things that aren't afraid of us. I had a bird land in my palm once, and it felt like that.
Also, here is this...thing. L found it. It's pretty amazing.

Wow! That video is incredible. It makes me want to try it. (And I like the music too.)
I've had butterflies land on me, but never a bird -- well not a wild one. The closest birds ever seem to come is a few feet away, and only when enticed by dropped crumbs. I have had butterflies land on me, mostly when I wasn't paying attention because I had my nose in a book.
Mosquitoes, though... they land on me. Lots!
The butterfly house sounds amazing. I'm glad you all had a good time.
One of the best memories I have is from my Basic Training. We were all sitting around waiting for something, I can't remember what, but we were in this massive field filled with butterflies. They were everywhere, and landed on us constantly. I think I had 4 or 5 at one time. It was one of the most peaceful experiences of my life, which was odd considering the circumstances.
rsf - I think it must've been ill and looking for someplace warm. It died about 20 minutes later, still sitting there.
Pip - that's a wonderful image.
I once went to a mountain top in Mexico where all the monarch butterflies in North America winter. It was the coolest thing ever. Literally hundreds of thousands of butterflies. The sound of it was fantastic. I wonder where I tucked away those photos and videos.
-kholly
That sounds amazing. I would love to see that someday. I hope you find your photos.
Kholly - that does sound amazing. We'll have to find a way to get there sometime.
I've tried to nurse various birds back to life. Some successfully, others...not. None that came to me, though. All found, in various peril.
When I was a kid we tried to help a duckling once. It didn't survive. Danny and Sam were both totally distraught when it died. Probably the last time I can think of Danny caring about anything that wasn't him, actually.
We're making cornflake and chocolate cakes
you're never too old or too good a cook for cornflake cakes!
(Anyone else listening to The Ashes imagining Danger in Whites every time they mention Watson (Watto)?)
Cornflake cakes?
I don't think I've ever had one of those.
they're just melted chocolate and cornflakes, RSF. And sometimes dried fruit or anything else you throw in. Can also use rice krispies, or anything else that will stick together with melted chocolate :)
I've had those with coconut and crunchy chow mein noodles. We called them 'haystacks'.
Birds are tricky to nurse back to healthy. Being prey species they hide illness; by the time they show they are ill, it's quite often too late.
Pip, I thank you for the image of soldiers sitting peacefully in a field full of butterflies. It's the sort of image I enjoy; yin and yang perhaps.
That sounds amazing! My sister in law makes something like that, but also uses peanut butter. So yummy!
That sounds tasty. Tastier than rice krispie bars with marshmallow actually. I must try this.
They are good.
Sherlock is circling them like a shark, now we've had dinner.
I might join him...
You're allowed to eat them without asking!Well..without asking a grown up. I imagine you have to ask Sherlock.
Only until he goes to bed.
Lestrade because you're an officer of the law and it's meant to mean people can trust you then I'm going to trust you and you have to look after the chocolate cakes and you have to protect them with your LIFE and if you do you can have one and don't let John bribe you like Mycroft says he will because that's bad.
So, John...want to try and bribe me ;)?
I would rather bribe you than eat the chocolate cakes, so everyone can be happy.
No! You can't bribe a police officer Lestrade you should arrest him.
Should I? Don't know...I mean, if it's me he was trying to bribe, I'm probably too close to the case. What if just tries to bribe me not to arrest him?
John, you'll be pleased to know I'm not available to come and arrest you, despite Sherlock's phone call. And tell the boss he might want to get his phone back.
Sorry Sal. Got my phone back...and he's going to bed. Without arguing. Just glad he didn't try treble nine.
...I'm really sorry, Sally. I'm glad he feels he can call you if we're both letting him down...but it won't happen again over cakes, I promise.
I'm so glad my kids don't have a direct line to a police officer I'd be in trouble ALL the time ;-)
It's nice to see you all had a good day with the butterflies and I hope a good evening is being had right now :-)
Hey, I wasn't letting him down...just...well, okay, maybe I was a bit, in not arresting you.
Next time I'll just do it :)
I suppose I just meant I'm glad he thinks of her as someone he can call if he needs to. Not that either of us were actually letting him down in that situation.
Well...I think he's got a range of people he can register his complaints with. Mycroft, Mrs H, the other Mrs H, Anthea...and yes, if either of us require arresting, Sally. Or if my job is too annoying, my Super, apparently...
He's very resourceful. Very.
Morning all. Commiserations to any of you who are at work. Or who have restless kids and partners at work. Or whose work is having restless kids ;)
Has John been called out?
(Sorry if I've missed something, I'm currently busy vomiting up my toenails and very miserable)
Oh, heavens, ReRe, are you OK? Hope you feel much better soon.
Are you back at the coal face today Greg? My little people decided that they had missed all their toys so much when we were away that they just had to get up and play with them as soon as the Sun came up ;-)
Hope you feel better room rr
(soon not room obviously RR)
Hope you get better soon RR.
Yeah, AnonyBob. Back at work. Hoping John and the boys want lunch or cake or something later.
I'm sure they will ;-)
Good luck with everything and I hope the day goes at least partly according to plan :-)
With central London road closures all day, things rarely go to plan! Emergency responses are a nightmare.
Why are the roads closed?
RR don't forget to drink liquids, just do it slowly so they'll stay down. Fell better soon.
Feel...
Big bike rides this weekend. It's the 100 mile fun ride and pro ride today. I'd like to do it one year. Or the London -Brighton.
Thanks, all. (Tiny sips of flat ginger ale, rsf.)
Good luck, L.
Lestrade I looked at the pictures and I found nice ones and PLEASE can I do a post on your blog with them please?
PLEEAAASSEEEEE I texted you and everything
There's a comedic radio show out here called Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. One of the things they do (it's a quiz show) is mix a true outrageous news story in with two fictional outrageous news stories and the contestant has to guess which is the real onne. This week the real story was the one with the toaster. I hardly ever know the real answer. :)
Good luck with your post, Sherlock, and good job with asking first.
Ella
I listen to that by podcast, Ella--and now I know I'll have ONE right answer this week. :)
You're asking really very nicely, Sherlock. You just have to wait until Lestrade can answer his phone--you know how sometimes he can't right away.
Sorry! I was busy, Sherlock.
Yes, you can do a post. Thank you for asking.
Want me to send you a title?
You can text some but I get to choose and if they're not good I won't use one.
