Sherlock, L, and I went to pick up L's new bike today. It's very...shiny. And sleek. Obviously I am not jealous at all, no matter how new and nice looking it is, and how smooth to ride, and... Not jealous at all. And I still maintain that my bike is superior (for me).
We went to pick up Mycroft afterward, so he could ride it too, got a snack together, and delivered him to his school before his housemaster could start making disapproving faces. Good day.
Last night...was strange. I got a call out a little after eleven, went from that to another, and then got another when I was heading home. Home happened around three, I think, so all in all I wasn't even gone that long. It felt much longer and like no time at all.
In some ways, it was like being back in a war zone. A lot of differences, too, obviously, but that familiar sense of urgency, of things that need to be done right this second, the feeling of not a moment to lose. Different consequences, too, but still the same feeling.
The first and last were fairly straightforward drugs incidents, no overdoses, no one too badly off. The middle one was a man who'd had hot sauce thrown in his face, one of those hot sauces with dire warnings on the label. I hadn't seen that before. I think I can now definitively recommend against it.

"a man who'd had hot sauce thrown in his face, one of those hot sauces that I love with dire warnings on the label I should probably now agree with Lestrade in just how ridiculous they are."
I've sorted that paragraph for you.
I'm glad you like the new bike. Don't worry, I'll let you ride it :) And I'm glad you enjoyed your first shift. I hope it...gives you back some of what you've been missing.
They're fine if you don't get them in your eyes! I eat lots of things I wouldn't want in my eyes.
It's a wonderful bike, and it suits you very well. I will only steal if for short periods of time.
I hope it...gives you back some of what you've been missing.
In a way, I think it will...but I also feel like I haven't been missing it as much recently, like I'm readjusting maybe? In a good way. Like coming down from a ten year adrenaline jag.
I...your first line made me choke on my coffee.
When I said 'ride it'...I meant on the back ;) well, for a bit. Then I might relent.
And I'm glad. On both points.
Maybe one day you can bring Sherlock down from his adrenalin jag too
Just, y'know, remember that everything you do is important. All of it. All of you.
Thought it might.
Well...on the back will do, I suppose. ;)
All of it. All of you.
...Thank you. You help me with that, a lot.
And you helped me with it, too.
Bed? Think there's an allotment needs some tlc tomorrow. And I promised on pain of death to call Nicky and have a proper talk.
Bed, yes, or you may end up carrying me there.
I might end up sleeping with my guitar again... it's not as soft and warm as you.
Sings better though.
you both make perfect noises, when I get the fingering right...
I feel I should've seen that one coming... Bed! Let's go.
I'm glad your first shift went well John :-)
I hope some sleep was had by all and that the weather is good for the allotment today :-)
it's good enough. Bit grey, but the plants won't mind that.
John is wielding a hoe with practiced ease. I'm saying nothing.
(... I'm guessing this is something I'm better off not asking about...)
John, I imagine it feels good to be stretching your professional muscles again?
Sherlock, have you ordered your butterflies, now that you're home again? (I know I meant to ask you last week but I don't remember if I did or not.)
Have a good day, guys!
Yes we ordered them but now we have to wait because they send them as little caterpillars and as soon as they have some the right size they'll send them to me so we've planted some stinging nettles in pots for them ready.
Hot sauce in the face? Ouch! I don't even want to imagine it.
Glad your first day/night of work went well. I could have used you at my library yesterday. Why do people think it's okay to shoot up in public bathrooms?
Anything more than lettuce yet? Thinned carrots and things are nice in soup, if they get that far. I always used to eat them straight away.
That sounds like good planning! Do you want to tell us what kind you decided on, or do you want to wait and surprise us when you have pictures to show us?
Tortoiseshells and Comma butterflies ten of each.
Why stinging nettles, Sherlock? And did you plant seeds or did you start with small plants?
Because that's what they lay their eggs on and what the caterpillars eat and what they want to make their chrysalis on. Different ones like different plants, but both of them like stinging nettles. Lestrade and John dug some up and we put them in pots and we're going to put them in big glass jars with net over the top when I get the caterpillars.
You'll have quite a swarm! I looked them up and they are really bright and pretty, too. Very nice choices!
I'm not sure I'd be willing to pot stinging nettles for my young people. What an amazing thing to do for someone!
I'm glad the weather down there is good for allotments :-)
Your caterpillars/butterflies sound like they'll be really interesting to watch grow Sherlock I hope they come soon for you :-)
Kestrel - but it's for science! No, seriously, we had gloves, and it wasn't too hard - plenty of nettles around the fringes of the allotment. Got a few odd looks though!!
AnonyBob - he races to meet the postman every day!
he races to meet the postman every day!
Perfectly understandable--I would!
John, I'm so glad your first day/night of work went well. I hope it brings you a lot of satisfaction.
Thanks, Nicky, I appreciate the kind this. I think it's going well so far.
