back at work

I am ostensibly working, but actually sitting in a corner until they have some use for me. Mrs Hudson picked up Sherlock from school, and he's been texting me. I finished looking at a sergeant's bite wound and checked my phone to find this series:

S: there is a planet called GJ 1214b
S: it has clouds
S: i read a quote from a man who is a scientist and he said it had loads of water on it
S: also i read that people are going to be able to take holidays in space soon
S: so i would like to go to GJ 1214b please
S: maybe for easter or next christmas

S: mycroft says it's 40 light years away, i thought it was closer :(
S: he also says it's impossible to go faster than the speed of light but i don't think anyone's tried properly
S: they can't even go the speed of light yet so they can't be working at it that hard

I assume he's now building a faster than light rocket ship out of his mum's old Meccano set.

I definitely went faster than light earlier.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh yes?

Greg Lestrade said...

Was talking to someone, who wasn't keen on talking to us. Finally got them to open up a bit, couldn't leave, had drink two pints of coffee earlier... My bladder was the size of a space hopper. Once free, I was a blur to the toilets...

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Aren't you supposed to fill the criminals up on coffee so they have to go and start making poor choices about what they tell you?

Greg Lestrade said...

The person wasn't a criminal.. But yeah, bad choices for me!

You okay? Busy day?

John H. D. Watson said...

Busy so far, yeah. I think I've been sent about ten places so far today. None of them particularly bad though. How are you?

REReader said...

I have to say, Sherlock definitely has a point about them not working at it hard enough--weren't we supposed a thriving moon colony by now? And maybe a base on Mars? Or at LEAST flying cars?

Sherlock--actually, there's one subatomic particle that can only go faster than light, if it exists--the tachyon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachyon). (I'm afraid that's about as much as I understand about tachyons, though.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay. Busy, but not a whole lot further on in the case. Some people are just hard to find out much about.

You okay, Sherlock? Found Galactica Sherlockia yet?

Sherlock said...

They SHOULD name it after me if I find a good one.

John is anyone dead are their maggots or lots of blood and what bit the sergeant? A person or a piranha or a crocodile or a dog or a cat or a horse or a snapping turtle or what? and are you both nearly home?????

Greg Lestrade said...

be home soon, shortstuff.

John H. D. Watson said...

A small amount of blood, no maggots, and a person bit the sergeant. Not almost home but almost leaving!

Sherlock said...

GOOD. can we have pasta and cheese and vegetables but no peas?

Anonymous said...

Soooooo, lestrade. In the "aren't you glad you aren't a uniform cop anymore" category: http://t.co/Ou4l0vMlEU

(Short version: man pulled over for drunk driving, runs away and climbs a tree, tries to convince police he's an owl. Fire department must get him down with cherry pickers and chainsaws.)

Sherlock, if you can't get to another planet by Easter, maybe you can talk to the Swiss government about visiting the CERN laboratories, and evaluate the progress they're making towards tracking down tachyons and going at the speed of light and such.

And Mycroft! Perhaps you know about this, but apparently an epic solar flare last week is leading to increased radiation (or something?) and I'm going to be able to see the Northern Lights in colorado! Tonight! I'm very excited.

I have no exciting messages for John, but it sounds like your day was exciting enough. I hope all is well.

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

You can. I mean, we can have pasta yes.

There's a rumour we might get aurora visible in London! Good luck to all trying to spot it.

Anon Without A Name said...

I think we might be a bit too far south to see any aurora here, but mostly, we're just in the wrong place - hills to the north and east.

I see a dozen London fire stations are closing today, some/most have been open for more than a hundred years. Apparently this will save around £3-60 per London household per year Nice one, Boris :-(

Joolz said...

Glad you haven't had to face anything too nasty today, John, and I suppose at least you're getting lots of bike riding in if you're visiting so many places.

I hope you didn't damage your knee in that faster than light speed dash to the loo earlier, Greg.

We're surrounded by hills too so we miss out on all the fun stuff like good views of the sky and deep snow, but we do get all the run-off water from them so yay for more floods!

Enjoy your evening when you're all back home again. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

There are long and arduous negotiations going on about Sherlock staying up until midnight. I've made myself a sign saying 'NO' to save my voice. John wasn't so wily ;). I may call in acas soon...

Ankle...did not appreciate my run to the toilet. Luckily urinals come with things to lean on ;)

REReader said...

Ouch! I hope resting that ankle this evening will help with that, L.

Why 'til midnight? Or I should say, any special reason why midnight?

Greg Lestrade said...

Aurora.

REReader said...

Ah. I just assumed it wouldn't be very visible in large cities.

Greg Lestrade said...

that is one of John's prongs, in his multi-pronged argument against staying up.

John H. D. Watson said...

The other prong is 'no'.

REReader said...

Like a pickle fork!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fairly sure I've also heard protestations about it possibly not hitting until 4am anyway...which led to Sherlock announcing he would get up at 4...

I think 'no' is our best prong. That and chloroform.

REReader said...

Alas, when you are old enough to stay up until 4:00, it's usually the last thing you want to do, even when you have to.

Sherlock said...

You're mean and I am old enough and John wants to see them too.

Here's the place you have to look for things in space. I'm good at it.

http://spacewarps.org/#/classify

Kestrel337 said...

Ditto getting up at the same.

Joolz said...

How right you are, RR, unfortunately, seeing 4 am never feels as good as you remember wanting it to!

Sorry, Greg, of course I meant ankle, my bad. ;)

Good luck with the whole 'no' thing. Maybe you could plan a future holiday visit to that place that John found a few months ago where you can stay in a hut and Sherlock can enjoy the aurora to his heart's content.

REReader said...

Did you mean that I'm mean, Sherlock? I didn't intend to be. It's just that now when I'm awake at 4:00 am, I'm generally desperately wishing I were asleep, since I'll have to be awake and alert in a few hours. And I'd love to see the Northern Lights too, but I can't imagine I'd see anything at all in New York, with all the city lights.

Thank you very much for the link, I've bookmarked it. It will be fun to see if I'm any good at it at all!

Greg Lestrade said...

Joolz - I think we'll try. Sadly Auroroa don't turn up on demand, so... well, we'll do it and hope, at some point.

RR - I imagine it's us who are mean. Or possibly everyone in the world. He's stamped off to put his pyjamas now.

REReader said...

I'm sure he has a very eloquent stamp.

Greg Lestrade said...

what's the betting that's not the last we'll see of him tonight...

Sherlock said...

it's a fart on a thermal camera DON'T COME UP I'M ASLEEP

https://vine.co/v/hY2PPurVtxH

Greg Lestrade said...

you better be! Terror.

REReader said...

Hee hee hee hee!

(I must be actually about 12. :D)

Greg Lestrade said...

it made us all laugh, even though we're fairly sure it's faked, but it set Sherlock on a long chain of things that should be filmed with thermal cameras.

Anon Without A Name said...

Nothing quite as convincing as insisting loudly that you're asleep ;-)

And apparently nothing as entertaining as farts :-D

Greg Lestrade said...

just looked on our account for the astronomy thing... Sherlock has done over a thousand searches! He is quite desperate to have a galaxy named after him...wonder how long his enthusiasm will last...

REReader said...

Over a thousand? O_O

(I've done all of 16--and so far I've been good on the training ones--but it's tiring on the eyes, or at least it is on mine!)

ETA: My captcha was "John". Really!

Greg Lestrade said...

1040 our account says.

REReader said...

I'm in awe.

Greg Lestrade said...

i've added another 250, gone blind, John laughing because I pull faces when I look at the screen. He says he will make any galaxy I find be called the scrunchy fox galaxy.

REReader said...

I have NO idea how you did so many so fast! (I'm slowslowslowww. :( )

Greg Lestrade said...

I dunno, it's just looking for patterns, isn't it? I did a load with Sherlock the other night.

Bit like looking for evidence through a million crime scene photos :)

REReader said...

I think I'm not bad at finding patterns--it's seeing those fuzzy pictures! I know they are humongously far away and actually amazingly sharp pictures considering, but they are fuzzy to my eyes! (Also I still haven't got my eyeglasses prescription right.)

pandabob said...

How went the night gentlemen? Did Sherlock have you up sky gazing in Tim early hours?

I hope you're all having the best days you can :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - Mycroft said they can take much clearer pictures than that, but they severely resctrict the bandwidth, as so many people are looking, hence the pixelated pictures.

AnonyBob - he was up at about 5. I told him nowhere in the Uk had had aurora, something to do with the ... Magnetic fields pointing the wrong way? Anyway, I think he just blames me for that, like may e I sent the magnetic fields to bed earlier than they wanted too ;)

REReader said...

I don't know how anyone finds anything, I really don't. (But it is pretty addictive!)

Is today school picture day, or did they already have that?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes, that's today. Another reason we didn't want him looking like a zombie.

No doubt he will be scowling in it though.

REReader said...

The raccoon look is rarely becoming, 'tis true! :)

(Surely he won't be scowling if he saw your post about him looking cute when doing so...)

Greg Lestrade said...

We'll need an after school mood report from Danger.

We've marked five or six out of the thousand odd we've done as having possible lenses. I dunno, we agreed, anyway, so I figure that's two sets of eyes thinking someone with training should take a closer look. It's not life or death if you get it wrong, after all!

REReader said...

Hopefully clear and sunny for the weekend. :)

So far, all but one of the ones I've marked we're simulated lenses, so I think I'm not doing horribly badly, just slow. And nope, that's the whole idea of crowd sourcing!

Sally said...

The boss has moonwalked past my desk, done a spin and a half and walked off. Anything to do with you, John?

REReader said...

It certainly sounds like his mood is clear and sunny, Sally! :)

How did the picture taking go, Sherlock? Did the photographer have interesting cameras and equipment?

John H. D. Watson said...

Might be...

Greg Lestrade said...

Can't a bloke just be happy without an enquiry into it?

Anonymous said...

Happy, sure. But moonwalking always requires an enquiry. :)

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

Michael Jackson was on the radio, that's all!

Sherlock said...

WE didn't mark them I marked them!

Are you at home tomorrow I want you to be and can we go to Bletchley Park when Mycroft is at home?

Greg Lestrade said...

oh dear... got home to find out that the galaxies thing has run out of images! Sherlock is not happy. He's looking through their other projects though... he may still get some space dust named after him.

REReader said...

That's a wonderful accomplishment, Sherlock! And perhaps they'll have more images in a while. ... Is there a code breaking museum at Bletchley Park now?

Do you have tomorrow off, L? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

He's searching for planets now.

Yeah, tomorrow off. And yes, Bletchley Park is a museum/visitor thing now. And I'm sure we can go, yes, Sherlock.

REReader said...

Have a lovely weekend, the three of you, then. :)

I once worked on a book about Bletchley Park, fascinating stuff!

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks. I'm sure Bletchley will be very interesting.

Not sure if I'll be off Sunday too yet. Hope so.

Sherlock said...

i don't think I've found a planet yet and Lestrade and John won't let me stay up any more so they better not run out of them too

ro said...

Bletchley Park is cool! I went there in March. I liked that they have a display on the pigeons they used for sending messages, too. They do guided tours (for about an hour or so), which are worth doing for the extra information, before wandering off yourself to explore. I'm sure you'll all enjoy it!

Have a good sleep, Sherlock.

Joolz said...

Do you have something nice you'd like to do tomorrow whilst the three of you are off, Sherlock.

We went to Bletchley in the summer and it was amazing seeing all the machines they used, I'm sure you'll all love it when you get the chance to go.

Have fun tomorrow whatever you decide to do.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm slightly worried they solve some unsolvable code, or find something wrong or... something :)

Mycroft said...

I would be more concerned that they may keep Sherlock as a test subject.

Perhaps concerned isn't the right word.

Hopeful?

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. You're lucky he's in bed already...

Mycroft said...

I assure you that I, along with the rest of the world, am counting down the days to the sheer chaos which will be unleashed upon the known universe when he is too old to have a 'bedtime'.

If anything will spur scientists on to create a craft which can travel faster than light, that is surely it.

Lift off will be approximately 1am, a few days before 'bedtime' ceases to be. I have my ticket.

John H. D. Watson said...

What age is that? At the moment, I'm thinking around 30.

Mycroft said...

Then I fear you will miss the flight.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hey Mycroft. You all ready for mocks next week? I'm sure you are. don't really know why I'm asking.

Mycroft said...

I feel adequately prepared, thank you.

Greg Lestrade said...

ha, sometimes I feel like you are 'adequately prepared' for anything life throws at you, you know? Just as long as you know John and I are here for you if you ever find you're not quite as prepared as you thought, then it's all good.

Kestrel337 said...

I heard about this on the radio today, and thought it might be of interest...

Morning all. So what exciting plans do you have for your day off. I think swimming was mentioned earlier in the week so are you off for a dip, very good exercise for ankles I'm sure - unless you have a little fish swimming through your legs and grabbing them on the way past! ;)

Do we know if the photo experience was survived scowl free yesterday. ;)

Enjoy your day whatever you end up doing.

Greg Lestrade said...

I asked about the picture...he scowled at me :)

Today is an absolutely lovely day. Sunny, dry! We've already been to the park. I think swimming is a possibility this afternoon.

Sherlock said...

We went swimming and then I had hot chocolate with cream AND marshmallows.

Joolz said...

Lucky you, Sherlock, that sounds delicious.

Seeing as you love swimming and looking for things maybe you can combine the two and find some sea life just like you were finding galaxy lenses.

Thank you! I want to go snorkelling or diving and see things in the sea.
