training

I've been looking at half marathons since L foolishly agreed to do one with me. There's a few in France, in the mountains - which is good because it'll be cooler, but bad because...they're in the mountains. But we don't get Mycroft back until late June, so it's going to be either heat or elevation, and I think I'd prefer elevation. Greg? Preferences? Or we could just do one around here and then we could do it anytime, but I thought something different might be nice.

There's also a Midnight Sun Run in Iceland, which sounds interesting. Apparently you get to lounge around in thermal pools afterward, which will probably be all we can manage.

And here's a training schedule that Sherlock sent me because "you and Lestrade are old and you should be careful you don't die when you run for miles and miles."

Noted, Sherlock. We will do our best not to die.

There's a link to the website where he found it, but I'm also pasting it here because the constantly moving text at the top of the screen on the site makes me want to hurl the computer across the room.

I think France sounds....like something to aim for? Or...something?

I might start trying to run to work some days. Then you could run when Sherlock's at school. But we definitely have to do lots together too, or...well, it won't be fun. Not that it'll be 'fun' anyway...

What does 'with MM mean'?

John H. D. Watson said...

'Magic Miles'...no, I have no idea what that means. I could look it up, or alternatively we could ignore it.

We can probably find a pool to soak in post-race in France too, right?

Greg Lestrade said...

...Magic... I admit I'm intrigued.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll report back. I'm hoping there's flying involved.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm hoping they'll be miles that magically disappear.

I'm impressed that Sherlock is doing his research as your trainer. ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

He just enjoys cycling around us shouting too much to give it up.

REReader said...

And he does want to make sure you old guys don't die!

(I'm older than either of you. Hmmmm.)

Greg Lestrade said...

As long as he can filch the wallets off our dead bodies and go for ice cream, he doesn't seem that bothered about our deaths in the park. Obviously thinking about us actually running in the mountains worries him more.

REReader said...

Well, he SEES you running in the park, so that must be safe, right?

Greg Lestrade said...

He will - hopefully - see us running wherever we go.

He might have to find someone else to source the ice creams during our 'real' run, though. Anthea, you've been warned.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've lost John to a world of running tips.

I've been told we're getting our gait tested, and we're doing 'dynamic stretching' before running.... and don't even ask about Fartleks.

REReader said...

*cautiously googling fartleks*

Greg Lestrade said...

..and how to avoid bonking. Which is a shame. I quite enjoy bonking - at least, there's a time and a place for it ;)

REReader said...

...

*not googling "bonking"*

Anon Without A Name said...

Probably for the best, ReRe :-)

I would have thought bonking would have been a good thing. I mean, a nice cardio workout, stamina training, and some decent stretching, if you like that sort of thing.

Fartleks... *titter*

Unknown said...

I also cautiously googled fartlek... makes me a little tired just to read about it actually. I am enough over this cold that I went to dance practice today, and it does strike me that it is March already, which means only about 7 weeks till May Day, and we won't meet on Easter sunday. So I can't rely on practice to get in shape for dancing out. Not that one can anyway: as the saying goes, get in shape to dance, don't just dance to get in shape. So I really have to start at least walking every day, at least a mile. ugh. but if I don't I'll be a lousy dancer, and that will be embarrassing.
I like that training schedule with different lengths of runs, some longer and then some shorter... I'm not sure I can afford to give myself all those days off though, with so few weeks... maybe a shorter walk on those days.

Your trainers are a doctor and a hyper, brilliant 8-yr-old? With all this applied science & enthusiasm you guys are going to be SO fit.

Don't scoff. Now that I'm officially middle aged I do believe that while "not dying" may not be a big concern, "not getting injured" is a HUGE deal.

Some days I really miss being able to run. Then I remember how much I hated it when I actually could, and I'm thankful to go on my long walks!

I did a bit of yard work today, for the first time since buying the house. It was really nice outside, and my mom came over to help since I'm having trouble with my RA lately and my hands don't always want to function. Not the best thing when trying to pull weeds and use sharp objects!

I hope that everyone else is starting to have nice weather, too. Nothing quite like fresh air to blow away the staleness of winter.

pandabob said...

That training plan sounds fun and it gives you evidence to convince Sherlock that rest days are important ;-)

I hope Monday treats you all as well as it's able :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Monday is fantastic so far!

John H. D. Watson said...

Which isn't something you hear all that often...

pandabob said...

No it's not John which has to lead nosy people, I.e. Me, to wonder what's so fantastically special about today ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Just made a good arrest, charged someone. Makes me happy! And it's sunny.

pandabob said...

That does sound fantastic Greg :-)

I hope the sunshine continues

REReader said...

Congratulations, L!

And happy sunny Monday to all who have sunny skies today. (Happy cloudy Monday to the rest of us. :) )

Greg Lestrade said...

How're you, Danger? Thank you for a fantastic weekend. That's enough to keep me smiling regardless. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm glad they won on Saturday, it was great seeing you so happy :)

And well done on the arrest as well. I'm...doing laundry. So, not ideal, but could be worse.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh give over, there's few things more exciting than sorting through my undies. And you do get extra danger money for going through Sherlock's pockets!

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I could run a whole separate blog that was nothing but pictures of what I've pulled out of Sherlock's pockets.

REReader said...

(I'd read that!)

Anonymous said...

I'd read that too. It reminds me of Old Yeller (is the book as much of a classic over there as here? I'm guessing not), where the mom requires little brother Arliss to empty his pockets before he can enter the house, since he's forever carrying around (live) snakes and horny toads and other creepy crawlies in them.

Sherlock, want to bring John into town for a celebratory coffee, I might even run to cake...

Sherlock said...

YES

Greg Lestrade said...

You do look after him well, eh? ;)

REReader said...

And is much cake being enjoyed? :)

Sherlock said...

Lestrade crept up on me and turned me upside down and tickled me on the sofa and I put jam in his hair and now John is laughing so hard he blew spinach onto the floor.

REReader said...

And so the hilarity continues... ;)

Have you had a fun day, Sherlock?

John H. D. Watson said...

I cleaned up the spinach, but the jam, the jam...

Greg Lestrade said...

Not funny! How did I know he was armed with jam??

John H. D. Watson said...

It could've been worse than jam!

John H. D. Watson said...

(and in what universe was that not funny??)

Greg Lestrade said...

In the universe where my hair is now matted with jam! I'm all sticky!

Although your resulting snort was quite amusing. You sounded like a water buffalo with a terrible cold.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know it is, I already sent Nicky a picture!

Whatever. Jam head.

Greg Lestrade said...

The only thing making it better is that I know you are deeply attracted to jam.

I'm going to have to shower. You can enjoy cooking dinner, if you stop snorting it all over the floor... Jampire.

John H. D. Watson said...

Is this how you spiked your hair up when you were younger? It's working pretty well...

Greg Lestrade said...

You're mean. And now I have Nicky sending me 'hahaha' texts.

John H. D. Watson said...

hahahaha :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I am jam-free.

Here, laugh at this:

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha, oh no...

Greg Lestrade said...

Wish they could find this missing plane - it's so odd that nothing's been found yet. A real mystery.

Sherlock said...

Why can't they find it? They should be able to find anything in the world by now. Can we go and look for it?

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know, mate. They're looking though, lots of people, with lots of equipment. And hopefully they'll find some answers soon, for all those families. It is currently a real mystery.

REReader said...

According to the news last night, it's because they don't know where to look. If the plane had gone straight, that would be just a line they'd have to search, but if it started turning (which it looks like), then they don't know which direction or how much, so they've got a huge area to search.

REReader said...

One heartening thing is that they have such a very international group of boats and planes searching. That's a lot of search power.

Greg Lestrade said...

That in itself is kind of amazing though, isn't it? Given you can get an app on your phone that shows the positions of flights all over the world - you'd think they might have quite a good idea. I think the technology that surrounds us now makes you forget what a big world it is.

Becca said...

The jam!

Back from the hospital. Surgery went well. Epidural took a while to wear off, so that was annoying. On lots of the good meds. Am settled into my next on the ground floor. Now for recovery!

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad it went well! Hope you have a smooth recovery.

Small Hobbit said...

Best wishes for a good recovery, Becca.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm glad it went well, Becca!

Feel better soon, Becca! I hope many people bring you whatever food you feel like eating.

REReader said...

Refu'ah shelaymah--a complete recovery, Becca!

I think the technology that surrounds us now makes you forget what a big world it is.

Very very true, L. They were showing the possible search matrix as a growing fan around the original flight path, but until they plugged in miles, I had no idea how vast the area was.

Anonymous said...

Yay Becca! The first part is over. You are very kind to update us so quickly. Hope you get to keep the good drugs till you don't need them. (I am impressed with how well you are typing on the good drugs!)

Hope everything goes smoothly, I will be happy to see updates.

Becca said...

Thanks everyone. I will have the good drugs as long as I need them, I have a very understanding pain doctor. I'm in very little pain. Right now, the biggest issue is just having to wake up every 3-4 hours to take them.

pandabob said...

Another sunny day brings another fantastic day, for me at least :-D I hope your days are treating you well gentlemen and everyone reading this :-D

I hope the pain is staying away becca.

Greg Lestrade said...

Busy! Hope you're all okay, especially you, Becca!

REReader said...

Yay for good drugs, Becca!

It's a lovely day here, sunny and warm, 56F. (It's supposed to go down to 26F on Thurs., so we'd best make the most of it, and maybe get rid of most of the dirty ice mountains!)

Anonymous said...

Good to hear you're not suffering Becca. Hope everyone else has had/is having a decent day. Lovely weather here, planning to manipulate my to do list to get outside as much as possible.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll be late, Danger. Sorry.

REReader said...

I hope everything is okay, L.

Sherlock, if you'd like a change from identifying stars, how would you like to try classifying bat calls? http://www.batdetective.org/

Greg Lestrade said...

Just leaving, Danger. Sal asked if I was avoiding you because of 'Jamgate'.

Bry was in court today. Fine and suspended sentence.

John H. D. Watson said...

I hope it was a big fine.

We ended up getting Chinese, I can heat something up for you when you get here if you haven't eaten.

Greg Lestrade said...

That'd be lovely. Just locking up.

Can you disjam the attack child?

John H. D. Watson said...

(No DIs were jammed during entry to the flat)

REReader said...

(Do I say "How nice" or "What a pity"? ;))

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm still wary of a stealth jamattack.

Sherlock said...

I don't want to go to bed Lestrade only just got back it's not fair!

John H. D. Watson said...

Nevertheless that's where you're going.

Sherlock said...

Bedtime is stupid when can I stay up later?

Greg Lestrade said...

When you're very old, and no longer want to...

Anonymous said...

Ahh bedtime. With its universal themes.

When you're very old, and no longer want to...

Rather reminds me of the "when I grow up" song from the Matilda play that Tim Minchin did the songs for.
