I went to see Lestrade play his guitar at a very small pub tonight. Last night, technically. I was under strict instructions to not do anything whatsoever - applaud wildly? Fling various items of clothing at the stage? Not sure what he had in mind. I behaved with perfect decorum but was still accused of looking 'soppy'... Well, he might've had a point. Couldn't help it. I really do think he's amazing and was so pleased and proud to be there with him.
Sometimes I wonder how things would've gone if we'd met years and years ago, when I was in med school and he was still in his band. Really poorly, probably, when I think back on most of my relationships. And that's assuming I got up the nerve to talk to him at all; also unlikely back then.
On nights like this, it's possible to believe that sometimes things really do turn out for the best.

Emily Dickinson
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I'm so glad you had a wonderful evening, John. :)
(And that you don't see this 'til morning.)
*facepalm* (And I hope that etc.)
Yeah, quite possibly quite badly.
Doesn't stop me thinking about it too.
I think I beat you for early wakeups this morning Greg, 4am...
And I guess you'll never know, it's lovely you're in each other's lives now though :) I often wish I'd met my bf before, when we were teenagers, because I get the impression he was quite lonely and didn't have many people who understood him, but if wishes were horses, etc etc etc
You did beat me. I wasn't up til gone 5.
And yeah, as much as it would have been great to share more of my life with John, I think we would have been fairly incompatible. And if he'd still gone into the army I think I'd have been a total wreck.
Hiyas people! I'm a lurker whose finally grabbed enough sleeplessness not to be scared to post a comment. So I've mostly been reading the back archive (I'm on July 2011, Pride Parade) and this blog has kind of taken over my life. Which I guess is kind of sad, considering. Anyway, I'm at school and am supposed to be doing something, I don't know, intelligent, such as working on my English paper. Ah well.
Also, don't worry, I don't actually eat souls.
Wow, that was selfish. Sorry. Lestrade, you must've been amazing. But I live in the states, and have school, and no real excuse to go "Across the Pond" so nevermind.
John-Being sappy is NOT a bad thing, unless you over do it.
HI SoulEaterMoon, glad you're not scared any more! And you weren't selfish.
Good luck on your English paper and...well, I hope we don't take up too much of your life!
I'm working on a presentation I have to do about first responders onto a murder scene - which I'll probably blog about later unless something more interesting haooens to me!
unless something more interesting haooens to me
Famous last words Di Lestrade ;)
It would be just my luck to completely fail to make my last words mean anything, too! 'happens', obviously...not haooens.
Done with the paper (pretty easy actually, since I had to talk about one of my favorite things)
I take it first responders don't deal with terrorists as much as they do on TV? Cause I, alongside having no life (so this blog really doesn't clog anything up) am also obsessed with cop shows. Mostly NCIS. I take it it's not as exciting in RL?
No, you're not taking up my life, since I don't have one outside the 'net.
Dear John and Lestrade, have either of you heard of DAMNYOUAUTOCORRECT.com?
Also, here is the last line of my paper, in case anyone cares
"From Margo I learned random Capitalization. From Alaska I learned about the Labyrinth, from Colin I learned about stories, from Will Grayson I learned about coincidences and from Hazel Grace I learned about not be afraid to love, and being willing to open up. "
Welcome.
And yes, after some of the things L's phone has said, it's possible he's on damnyouautocorrect...
SEM - definitely not as exciting as on the telly. Although it has it's moments. Although I'm not sure how often people on tv deal with terrorists! I don't watch many cop shows.
NCIS is the one with Illya Kuryakin in the mortuary, right?
Danger - you now almost as qualified on bee anatomy as humans?
Thankyou
Now in History. Learning about the American Revolution. And personally, I'm glad the US managed to break off before britain pulled a Roman Empire and fell apart rather spectacularly.
To respond to a comment of Lestrade's on his blog, so the turnout for election was 15%? Wow. and I thought the US's turnout of 50% was bad.
L - No, and yet I still know more about bees than I ever really wanted to... Well, that's not fair. It is interesting.
if he'd still gone into the army I think I'd have been a total wreck.
Yeah, I saw a lot of relationships end because of that kind of stress.
Lestrade- I thought not. Considering that it would mean more people would be murdered, I'm glad of that. It does have it's moments. There's this one show that uses actual science as it's basic. It's called Lie To Me. People on TV deal with terrorists constantly. The end of season 9 of NCIS had the Navy Yard blown up by a terrorist, and on another show they find terrorist plots basically once a season.
Yes. I also only know who that is because of the show. Apparently the character (Ducky, or Dr. Donald Mallard) looked like Ilya when he was younger. Mortuary? You mean the morgue right?
Greg, this may seem like a silly question but how doees a first responder tell if it's a murder or just an accident?
Also if it's an attempted murder that sadly becomes a murder (stabbing, taken to hospital, dies etc) does the work of the paramedics/medical staff make it more difficult to work the case, or less, or not affect?
Yes I did a 7hour shift and am just getting home. I'm a little fried.
Jaws - that is exactly the problem. H&scc are taught to deal with murders, but it's ordinary bobbies who find them and have to decide who to call/what action to take. That's what my presentation will be about! I'll answer more tonight.
Soul - yes, mortuary is the morgue.
Danger - what sort of bee is it? Drone, worker, queen? You heading off on a posting for months in end with people firing mortars at you would actually have driven me insane. Even the thought that you did that does a bit!
Ordinary worker bee. The wings are pretty amazing.
Yeah, and I would've gone. I can't imagine anything that would've stopped me...and the Army basically owned my soul at that point anyway.
Why are there so many differences between American and British English? I mean, my fellow American whovians and I spend the majority of our time on BBC America, and a lot of american shows are popular in England.
Also, unrelated question, but John and Lestrade, do you guys like Doctor Who?
Good luck with the bee, John. And I keep meaning to tell you how much I'm enjoying the poetry this month and then getting distracted.
rsf
Danger - I wouldn't have wanted to stop you... I'd just have been a complete wreck the whole time you were gone (whilst trying not to seem it to you).
Soul - I don't think John minds Dr Who, but I'm really not a fan. Especially the newer ones.
John - leaving to fetch Mycroft now. see you in a bit.
Have a good ride. Don't do any wheelies...
Silver Fox to Red Ears, I have the package in my possession. Now proceeding to safe house....
(And as if! I did a rolling stoppie instead...)
John-I'm now actively imagining Lestrade doing wheelies :) :) Best mental image EVER
Lestrade-To each his own, though I wonder why especially the newer ones? Also, do you know how to do wheelies?
SoulEater re the wheelies - you need to read further along in the blogs ;)
One must admire the headmaster's understanding of effective deterrents... :)
I don't know why Lestrade is pretending to be some sort of stereotypical spy or secret agent.
Anthea almost laughed though.
...and now having looked up "How to do a rolling stoppie" on YouTube, I'd have to take that back (if I believed that L, in fact, did that in front of the school... :D)
WHat do you mean 'almost'! I'm sure she was in stitches....on the inside.
Souleatermoon - try this page for wheelie info :-) (I think its the right one)
http://boringlifeofjohnwatson.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/brief-note-of-thanks.html
I hope the four of you have a good evening together boys/gents :-)
So it's sort of a backwards wheelie? I had to look it up too.
SEM - I like Doctor Who all right. I still watch a bit of it here and there, but I liked the old ones better. Of the new Doctors, the only one I really enjoyed was nine.
It's.... a wheelie on your front wheel where the back of the bike is in the air...yeah.
Sherlock, give me my book back right now, or there will be TROUBLE. I'll show you some of it at bedtime if you're good.
I shouldn't be amused by this, right? I'm sure I shouldn't...
What book would that be? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
His Murder Investigation Manual (real book apparently). Sherlock's hiding under the bed with it. L's trying to get him out.
I'm trying not to laugh. Mycroft's filming it on his phone...
...if I had handcuffs small enough I swear that boy would be cuffed by now.
Do you want help?
All right, just a second.
it's not fair! He knows how to do murders and I'm only learning I NEED THE BOOK
(John has started doing a scary countdown-to-doom and full-name-calling. It made me get out from under the bed! But not...so far...Sherlock. Who is anchored, hugging the book up his top.)
Hee! :D
Right, I'm off--have a lovely weekend!
Oh, Sherlock :-(
If I give it back can I have one for Christmas?
if you give it back and apologise a lot you might get to stay up until bedtime Sherlock but I wouldn't push for more than that if I waas you!
if you don't give it back you won't be getting anything.
You can give it back, full stop. There is no 'if' involved.
oKAY. Can you read me chapter 2.3.3.2 before bed?
Not entirely sure you deserve it. Don't do that again - with anyone's property.
'The Investigative Mindset'...maybe...or you might get read the riot act. if you're lucky.
Thankyou pandabob. Sorry, I discovered this like two days ago and have been doing period binges to attempt to get all the way to the present (basically any moment at school when I'm at the computer and not doing school work).
Sherlock-Believe me, stealing things NEVER works. Unless you don't get caught. Or you ask permission. Anyway, I steal a lot of my brother's books and he is constantly mad at me.
L - are you sure this is a real book?
Don't worry SEM we're pretty good with links around here, new readers read on and all that ;-)
Sherlock - If Lestrade reads his book to you you are a very lucky boy, the one deal breaker in this house is taking things that aren't yours! I know you will find an appropriate way to show just how sorry you are to John and Lestrade though.
This is why we don't tell people about it. It sounds as if we don't know what we're doing! Like a bloke tinkering with an old Ford Escort and a Haynes manual.
It's a real book.
Working with agencies or multi-angency bodies where no memoranda of understanding and protocols exist
...Really?
didn't say it was a very interesting book...
Heh. I shouldn't make fun, really. The Army's just as bad. Probably worse.
I could've brought home one of my others...like
Policing knowledge: An action plan for improving knowledge in the use of policing, sharing what we know, learning what we don’t.
which I'm currently using as a mat under the plant in my office.
L-There's a series of books that are basicly crime scenes. Well, actually what it is is that you are presented the crime. So, what happened, who the victim was, all the information found at the scene ect. Then you get 'transcrips' of interviews with all the subjects. Then there is say, the autopsy report and the findings from lab tests done on evidence found. The one I read was a reopening of a cold case, set in a pysch ward. And at the end there's a narrative that gives the answer. Maybe Sherlock would like these, because he'd have to figure them out?
or I've got...
"Anthrax infection in injecting drug users: ACPO/ACPOS Guidance for the Police Service"
or the very exciting "(BIS): MoU between ACPO and BIS" (no, I don't know what it's about either.)
Also, was just reading the comments again and saw john's on doctor who. What are the old ones like, all I know is that four was a hippie and five had a piece of celery attached to his jacket.
...I don't even know them by number, I'm afraid. That's how little I know about them!
L-Just read the old post. Now I understand why there are over 150 comments on it.
Does this book contain the secret you were talking about a few days ago Greg? we were all a bit rubbish at working that out I think ;-)
oh! No, I forgot all about that.
A sauna is the answer - nigh on impossible to get any evidence off you once you've sweated it all out. Way better than a shower for ridding your body of evidence.
Glad I've got that out on John's blog :)
thanks for that, I really was curious, not for murderous use though I promise ;-)
Right, so do I need to get my potential victim into the sauna as well?
AnonyBob - I hope not! I'm not giving you the tip about shell casings though, just in case!
SH - no, doesn't matter if they have GSR on them. Although from my point of view it'd be nice if you could leave some evidence on them :)
SoulEater - sorry, not sure which 'older post' you're referring to?
I hope not! I'm not giving you the tip about shell casings though, just in case!
your lack of trust in me hurts DI Lestrade :-(
Hah, honestly...it's not you I don't trust...it's the rest of 'em ;)
She strikes me as the murderous type! Slightly unstable!!
Really? Well...what can I say to that! I think we're all a little unstable in our own ways - but I don't think many people here strike me as 'the murderous type'.
- maybe Ttid...but then he was... (By the way, just because I always think of it, and you lot probably don't know, Ttid stood for 'Tottenham 'Til I Die'.)
I'd wondered what ttid meant so thanks for that Greg. What a nutcase!
Anon - I don't know if you're kidding or not but I'm kidding most of the time around here, sorry if it doesn't always come across that way.
I was only joking. ttid was a whole different kind of strange and I think a lot of people wish they'd said something about the weirdness.
