mycroft, tennis, and turtles

Mycroft's coming home today! We're leaving to pick him up in a bit, although not as soon as Sherlock would like. He set all the clocks in the flat forward. I wondered why I was so tired when I got up at seven...it was actually five.

Here, have a baby two-headed turtle. Her name is Thelma and Louise, and apparently she's healthy and 'eating with both heads', which I imagine is a good thing? Sherlock wants one, needless to say.

I read this article the other day, Where Are Tennis's Young Guns?, and while I don't agree with it entirely, it does mesh with some thoughts I've been having. Maybe it's just me getting old, but I find myself wondering who I'll watch when the current crop of players retires - and by 'current', I don't mean those coming up now, because there doesn't seem to be anyone coming up now. I know you can't expect a Federer or Nadal in every generation, but there's no one who really stands out to me.

I don't know if it's the baseline play or slower courts or different equipment, but the play itself seems significantly less interesting than it did even ten years ago, and that's sad.

(I got a sleepy phonecall from him at 5, asking if I'd be home on time or not... And I heard the 'Sherlock!!' down the phone as he realised :)

Now, we really CAN go and get Mycroft!

That two headed turtle is, I'm not sure how to describe it, impressive possibly. I do wonder how the nervous system works in such a creature.

As for tennis, maybe there are players coming up, but because of the dominance of the current big names, they're not being seen. And when the "old men" move on and their style of game with them, new younger players will move up, possibly with a different style to suit their play.

But I could be entirely wrong - I shall be watching MotoGP rather than Wimbledon ;)

Yay for Mycroft coming home. Like Anonybob said on t'other post, Mycroft coming home feels like the proper start of summer :-)

I read the Prop 8 just got struck down as unconstitutional in California - and weddings have already begun! This lovely couple have been waiting four years to be able to be married, and now they are (with half an hour's notice): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23109152 :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - sometimes I wish we could get married at 24 hours notice :) would take the stress out of planning!

Mycroft is indeed home. The flat is now packed with people, wildlife, things, washing, books...and happiness.

Yay Mycroft's home and, here atleast, we have Sun :-D

have a great summer together all of you :-)

Can you not use Mycroft's talents now he's home Greg? You've chosen a venue and looked around at things can you not get Mycroft to write you a timetable now he's around to ensure you stick to it ;-)

Or L's bike. Or mine.

Ha! Yes. Bikes =/= year-round pride floats. At least, not your bikes. How about your own bike, Sherlock?

At the moment he is using the rest of us 'as storage' because we're 'bigger and have more room'. He has also just brought us a handful of condoms. Given them to John, then taken one back and given it to Mycroft 'just in case'. :)

Someone has also given him a high pitched whistle. That...wasn't a good idea.

Anon Without A Name said...

I'm trying to imagine the look on Mycroft's face...

Small Hobbit said...

At least he can hide the condom in his pocket. It won't be as easy to ignore a Sherlock with a high pitched whistle!

John H. D. Watson said...

It's...practical, anyway. The condoms, not the whistle.

Greg Lestrade said...

He said it was because Mycroft was 'getting old'.

Tea is... Lovely. Champagne too ;)

John has even managed his tennis withdrawal symptoms via the bbc sports website.

Sherlock said...

This place is okay but it isn't very good it hasn't got anything exciting like it isn't a bridge or up a tall tower and doesn't have a hot air balloon or a lake or an ice rink or anything fun but it has nice cakes and milk froth.

Greg Lestrade said...

And we very much like that it's nothing fancy or weird or gimmicky. It's just....nice.

John H. D. Watson said...

And nice cakes are fun...

Mycroft said...

I think the venue is entirely suitable.

The history is also rich, and fitting.

Greg Lestrade said...

The Doctor won!! :)

Small Hobbit said...

Yeah, I know, I saw it!

Greg Lestrade said...

Had a brilliant day, got Mycroft back, Il Dottore winning, Rolling Stones are playing Glastonbury later, which should be worth a watch. Everything's good!

pandabob said...

Everything's good!

That's a good kind of day that's for sure :-D

I hope you're enjoying your evening

Sherlock said...

I shouldn't have to go to bed it's the holiday!

pandabob said...

holiday? is it really Sherlock? I thought holiday was a few weeks off yet.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's not holiday, and you do have to go to bed. Come on. Not long to go now.

Sherlock said...

It's aaaaaaaaaaaaages it's not fair Mycroft's off

Greg Lestrade said...

It does seem unfair, I'm sure, but he has to be at school so much more the rest of the time.

It'll fly by.

We can go swimming tomorrow, if you go to bed and be quiet now.

Greg Lestrade said...

Must be amazing, up on that stage, with a sea of people in front of you and a guitar in your hand. Just...being able to feel the music you're playing.

Anon Without A Name said...

It certainly looks like they're enjoying themselves. I can't help but think that Charlie Watts looks like someone's unexpectedly cool granddad, whereas the others look... yeah, I can't think of a polite way of putting it :-p

Greg Lestrade said...

Mick Jagger's legs look they belong to a newborn foal.

Keef doesn't look quite sure what's going on.

Ronnie has definitely never got the memo that he's a pensioner :)

Musically they're all over the place. But...well, I'd like to imagine at least the sound quality is better if you're right there.

And Mick should give up the bits between the songs. Not doing them any favours.

Anon Without A Name said...

All entirely accurate :-)

The BBC always seem to have trouble with the sound quality from Glastonbury, it's even more noticeable on the slightly smaller, quieter sets.

Greg Lestrade said...

Satisfaction was quite good, sound-wise. And Keef seemed to wake up and realise where he was and that he was holding a guitar.

Charlie has an expression on his face that says he's done something naughty and no-one's noticed yet.

Anon Without A Name said...

As far as I can tell, Charlie's had that same expression for the past 50 years - and probably with very good reason :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

time for bed.

John and I have carefully stuck the stickers Sherlock got 'especially for us' on the fridge.

'Sometimes Guys Marry Guys - Get Over It' :) He's a very sweet boy.

And will probably be up at 5 demanding swimming.

Greg Lestrade said...

Would anyone like to borrow a small boy with endless energy?

pandabob said...

Only if I coucd swap for two young girls with fighting energy ;-)

Good luck :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well... It would add variety? Change is as good as a rest?

We're going to tidy his bedroom. If you don't hear from me within a few hours, send in the hounds.

Sherlock said...

We're going swimming and then having cake and going to the allotment because Mycroft wants to and everything has grown LOADS since he was there last time and I bet there's more things ready to eat.

REReader said...

I'm guessing this means the room-tidying has been accomplished? :)

Excellent plans--have tons of fun!

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes - well, sort of. It's an improvement, anyway.

And swimming has been swum.

And now ice cream is being eaten.

The allotments will be tended.

REReader said...

Ah, well, that's the nature of tidying, isn't it? Like weeding, it's never DONE, it's just done enough for now. :)

Swimming, ice cream, gardening--yep, it's summer!

REReader said...

What things did you find ready to eat at the allotment today?

Readaholic said...

Thanks to an episode of Bones, I now know that the Thames is actually pronounced Tims.

English of the British and American varieties are both weird. (I say this as an American.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well...most people say 'Tems'. London is full of place names for tourists to horrible mispronounce through no fault of their own!
