by the sea

We're staying in an old railway car, which is something I didn't know you could do until L showed me the website. Sherlock is very excited about it, but that's a downgrade from very VERY excited - he initially thought it was our own private car that we could take wherever we wanted on the rail line. He noted the lack of tracks and engine almost immediately, but there was a moment there when I thought he might explode.

We're near the sea, and there's a place hire bikes and a path to ride on, so we've been doing that, baking, letting the dogs run around and try to bite the ocean. You'd think that would get old, but it never does - perhaps because their level of enthusiasm for it never changes.

Mycroft, L, and Sherlock have baked, and the cake is cooling. It's chocolate, with more chocolate, and chocolate icing to be applied later on. Couldn't ask for a better day, really.

Happy birthday, Sherlock. Watching you grow up is an amazing experience, and I'm happy to be a part of your life.

I find it...stunning, actually, that we've been here for nearly half his life now. I just can't wrap my mind around it.

He's demanded chicken wrapped in bacon with cheese and chips for dinner. Who can say no??

Sherlock said...

You changed me so I'm 8 on your blog heading and thank you for bringing me here it's good even if it doesn't move and can you help me do cake icing if Lestrade cooks dinner because we have to have cake after and thank you for my presents.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I hadn't thought of that. That's...mind boggling, yes.

Sherlock - you're very welcome and yes I'll help you do cake icing, although let's try not to have it explode all over the kitchen this time. Maybe Mycroft can supervise us.

Lestrade can tell us how to make it not so hard and anyway he said there isn't a piping thing so we just have to spread it on anyway and then put chocolate buttons on top.

It means I'm old if you've been here for half my life.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Are you sure? I think it might mean I'm old...

Greg Lestrade said...

If it means you're old I must be ancient... except that you're only as old as the bloke you feel... so maybe I'm just old..

John H. D. Watson said...

Nah. We can't be ancient yet, or even old. Too much to do. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

True! And got these two to keep us young ;)

I actually worry if Sherlock keeps bouncing around this place we may start to roll away.

John H. D. Watson said...

We can stick the car down with icing.

I find it mind boggling that Sherlock was only five when these blogs started, and now he's grown so much. John and Lestrade, you are amazing.

Happy birthday, Sherlock. I hope eight is a great year for you!

Joolz said...

Wow, you're right, nearly half a lifetime is amazing. How lucky can two boys be to get a family like you guys.

A railway car is a brilliant place to stay, even if it doesn't move. I bet that beats everyone else's birthday locations, doesn't it, Sherlock.

Enjoy your delicious chocolate cake and the rest of your holiday. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, we're just as lucky to have them in our lives.

Sherlock said...

The cake was really good except we had to save some for tomorrow John said even though I could easily have eaten more and we had a good day and I'm allowed to stay up late tonight even if it doesn't mean I'm always allowed up late.

Piplover said...

That sounds like a great day, Sherlock. What are you going to do tonight, since you're allowed to stay up later?

Sherlock said...

We're seeing if we can see stars and maybe going to the pub again they've got two dogs that live there.

Greg Lestrade said...

....mak us sound like a couple of booze hounds. Not often we've got a pub on our doorstep!

pandabob said...

There is nothing wrong with spending time in the pub when on holiday :-)

I'm so glad you're having a great birthday Sherlock and that all four of you are having some fun time together :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Now have a sleeping 'can I stay up until 11' year old in my arms as we leave the pub...apparently he couldn't!

pandabob said...

I had to carry my 6 year old from the car to bed one night last week and it nearly killed me so the fact that you can carry your 8 year old home from the pub is more than slightly impressive!!

Greg Lestrade said...

He is still a little thing, despite eating for four and growing like a weed!

It really isn't far to our carriage-home and we stopped to look at the stars a lot :)

Olli said...

Sherlock--that is the best thank you note ever! I'm really glad that the four of you are having a good time.

Do Phobos and Deimos get to come along to the pub to socialize with the other dogs? Or do they mostly keep themselves to themselves? New dogs are always more interesting, I think.

We're on the other side of the water, but we would really like to know where you're staying... there are a couple fellows in my family who would also really love a holiday in a railway car. Even if it doesn't move.

REReader said...

It's already Sunday by you, but it's still Saturday for me, so happy birthday, Sherlock!

I have to say that it sounds like a most wonderful birthday trip--I mean, a real railway car? AWESOME!

Sherlock said...

Olli I'm not allowed to say where we are in case bad people are reading but if you Google something like Railway Carriage Holiday or something then Lestrade says there are lots of them all over the country and it is good and nice and the kitchen is good because we could make a cake and the nice lady who runs it gave us cake tins because Lestrade had asked on the phone.

They get to come to the pub and meet other dogs. But later Anthea has to pick them up and taken them back to Mycroft's school because we're all on the bikes and we're going to go and pick fruit now.

rsf said...

A happy second day of being eight.Sherlock! What kind of fruit will you pick? I was in the mountains all day yesterday, and we came back with peaches and apples, but we bought them at a roadside stand instead of picking them. My mom is turning 88 and she says she would rather someone else did the picking part.

Greg Lestrade said...

We've got some apples and blackberries - going to make jam.

The PC who was injured the other day in a hit and run has died of his injuries. He stood, served, and fell for others. I'm sure everyone's thoughts are with his friends and family.

Joolz said...

Oh dear, that's so sad. Yes all thoughts are with his family.

Apple and blackberries say crumble to me - and now I really fancy one, except all the ones you can buy now have oats in the crumble instead of just plain, maybe I'll have to make my own.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock (still wearing his birthday badge) has just been given a large bar of blackberry and ginger flavour chocolate... as if he needs more!!

REReader said...

The need for more chocolate is a (individualized) constant. :)

(That is so sad about the PC. My heart goes out to his friends and family.)

Sherlock said...

It's good and also thank you for the giraffes Joolz, I forgot because everything was exciting.

Joolz said...

You're quite welcome, Sherlock, I thought you could have a couple without having to put holes in your floor. :)

Do you get updates about the giraffe that you adopted, maybe you could go and visit him again sometime.

Is it nice having Mycroft back again for a while too. Have fun. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I have to admit it is good chocolate.

The people who own the carriage gave it to him. He responded by telling them lots about our bikes they probably didn't need to know ;) But they're a lovely couple - fantastic hosts!

We do sadly have to go soon, to get Mycroft back on time. Or he might turn into a pumpkin. Or maybe Harrow will turn into a pumpkin. I don't know.

REReader said...

It sounds like you had a lovely birthday weekend, Sherlock. Yay! What part did you like best, or was it all best? :)

(That badge was a brilliant idea!)

Greg Lestrade said...

He'll have to reply in a bit. He's currently covered in degus on the floor.

REReader said...

And very nice, too! :)

Joolz said...

Aww, I bet they've missed him, haven't they. :)

Welcome home. Hope Mycroft went back ok.

Greg Lestrade said...

He did. I think he's actually home next weekend anyway! So we don't have to do without him for too long :)

REReader said...

Happy first day of school as an 8-year-old, Sherlock!

And a good day-back-from-holiday to you all. :)

pandabob said...

Have a good day at school Sherlock :-)

Are either of you two back at work today gents? I hope the day treats you both well whatever you're doing :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Both off today! It's very nice ;)

pandabob said...

A day off together sounds lovely because it gives you time to unpack and do the washing, unless of course you can think of a better way to spend a day together ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

It is, as you can doubtless imagine, hard to drag John away from the laundry. He does love it so...

John H. D. Watson said...

I only said I thought it would be nice if everyone had clean socks for tomorrow! I think it's a fair point.

Small Hobbit said...

Much simpler to buy new socks.

REReader said...

A useful thing about doing laundry is that there's no way around the waiting while it washes and while it dries... ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't deny I married you partly for your lovely clean socks...

Anon Without A Name said...

Clean socks that aren't turned inside out...

Have a fun time finding things to keep yourselves occupied while the tumble dryer's on :-)

pandabob said...

Did you tell your friends all about your birthday trip Sherlock?

Sherlock said...

YES and we're making jam.

pandabob said...

I'm glad you got to share your excitement :-)

what sort of jam?

Olli said...

Sherlock--that is quite a good rule to have, it's never a good idea to tell anyone on the internet exactly where you are! I suppose that goes for adults as well. I'm sorry that I asked it that way.

But I did ask Google, and now my boys are all excited about railway carriages! We haven't found one that moves yet either, though there's now a wild plan to take the train to the east coast and fly over and take another train to a rail carriage that we could sleep in. As if we wouldn't have done any sleeping on the trip.

We won't do it (at least not this year) but it's fun to dream. Enjoy the jam!

Olli, taking a sleeper car on a train is a wonderful adventure! I did something like that with my sister and mom many years ago. We went to Minnesota for a family gathering (from Massachusetts) one summer. The a/c on the car we had a room in was off so we sat out in the little foyer area where you board the car, and talked with kids our age who were going all the way to California. That was after exploring the observation car, dining car, etc. It was amazing, you see so much more than you do from a highway, somehow.
