canal ride

We took a bike ride today (bicycles, not motorbikes). We went to the canal, which was a pretty long ride for Sherlock, maybe the longest he's done. You can tell he's getting bigger and stronger though. He wasn't nearly as exhausted as we had feared/hoped. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful place:

We bought sandwiches and things and eat in the grass by the water. It was strange not to have Mycroft and the dogs with us. I missed him a lot today. He would've had a good time. And, obviously, the dogs would've loved it. They also probably would have jumped in the water and then shaken it off all over us, which I didn't mind missing.

Also, Sherlock would like to remind you, me, L, Mycroft, Mrs Hudson, and the world at large that his birthday is coming up.

I'm imagining he's ordering the Red Arrows to sort out some sky-writing to inform the UK of this fact right now.

I know exactly what you mean about Mycroft. Thought about him a lot today.

I do sort of doubt that everyone would have stayed out of the water if the dogs had been with us, though.

John H. D. Watson said...

True. At least two of us would've gone in if the dogs had, probably.

Skywriting might be too subtle for him.

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe he'll employ each household a person to dance around their living room with a megaphone doing a countdown to his birthday...

John H. D. Watson said...

That sounds more like it…

Greg Lestrade said...

what shall we do? It's a bit nippy for camping.

John H. D. Watson said...

The mill again, maybe? That was nice. We can ask him, too. He might have ideas. That don't involve a trip to Brazil.

Greg Lestrade said...

He probably will, yes. And he also won't think it's too cold for camping, because he's usually the heat of a small sun.

Greg Lestrade said...

...temperature of a small sun. I have been learned English proper, promise.

bed? I'm knackered!

John H. D. Watson said...

Bed, yes. Please. I may be asleep already.

Greg Lestrade said...

mm. could just stay here. take anal on the sofa. just for a bit. Till we've got energy to get up.

Greg Lestrade said...

.. A NAP.

Take A Nap on the sofa.
Bloody phone.

pandabob said...

Your auto correct is brilliant Greg :-D

Glad you've had a good day today but I'm not sure how much more we need to know about it ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

(i am still laughing a bit. he's just hit me with a pillow.)

Small Hobbit said...

Yep, I think that's a case of TMI there.

Greg Lestrade said...

Your post title is only one letter away from disaster, Doctor Watson.

haven't got energy to hit you with another cushion

Joolz said...

Oh, that is just too funny, Greg, and of course it was the phone... ;)

Sounds like almost a perfect day, just a shame you didn't have Mycroft with you to make it complete, maybe the 6 of you could go again next time he's home. :)

Sleep well or whatever your phone tells you to do. ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

We'd better get to bed before we get ourselves in any more trouble.

i thought bed was the designated place for *ahem* trouble...

Sherlock, your birthday is the 21st, right? Less than two weeks from now, definitely time to remind people!

*giggling at auto-correct...if such it be... ;D*

Sherlock said...

YES

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, after a restful night ;) we're allotmenteering. I fear achy muscles are in my near future.

pandabob said...

Enjoy the fresh air and hard work of the allotment :-) have you anything else ready to eat yet?

I can't believe your birthday is so soon Sherlock you are going to be all grown up in no time!

Greg Lestrade said...

There's yeah, lots of courgettes, spuds, tomatoes, fruit! Brilliant :)

Found Sherlock some snails to look at on a piece of glass, which made him happy.

pandabob said...

its nice when you reach the point where all the hard work starts paying off isn't it :-)

REReader said...

Yay for a good fall harvest!

And also for interesting snails--so long as they aren't damaging your plants. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Back home now, and dried off after being caught in a shower. Now chained to the oven again ;)

pandabob said...

A good husband should spend all his time cooking, didn't you know? ;-)

rsf said...

Are you canning or baking?

I'm looking forward to Sherlock's birthday too. How exciting!

Greg Lestrade said...

Canning? I've never canned...

But currently baking a fruit pie.

John H. D. Watson said...

A delicious pie... That I haven't been allowed near yet...

Greg Lestrade said...

Hopefully delicious!

AnonyBob - it's mainly Sherlock who's demanding it. And bread rolls, for school lunches, because he now doesn't like shop bought ones.

He's lucky I'm a soft touch ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

He has a point. Yours are much better.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, I don't mind. At least mine aren't full of additives and crap.

And thanks for practising your kneading skills on my arse while I kneaded the dough... were you standing on the yellow pages to rest your chin on my shoulder? ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Watch out, I could do much worse when your hands are too coated in dough to defend yourself...

Greg Lestrade said...

a. my dough doesn't 'coat hands', it's a good dough! b. floury hands will never prevent me from defending myself. A nice floury handprint on your bum would go with the painty one :) c. 'much worse' suggests you thought what you were doing was a bad thing. I assure you it wasn't. I wasn't just breathing heavily because I kneading...

John H. D. Watson said...

a) depends which stage of dough you're in - the beginning bits looked messy. b&c...I really have no argument with. Just saying if I'm going to get short jokes for a bit of light...massage, I'm sure I could think of something else instead.

Greg Lestrade said...

ha. Well, if it makes up for it at all, I think I'm going to make some jam with all this fruit.

John H. D. Watson said...

Definitely does :)

Greg Lestrade said...

If you're good I'll let you stand on a chair and stir the pot ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

So mean... I better get pie for that.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, yeah, everything's ready. Find Sherlock-the-food-hoover and we can sit up and eat. He's a bit like the dogs - can detect the sound of a rustling food bag from 8 miles off.

Joolz said...

When I read RSF's comment, I instantly read it as caning not canning [and no we are not saying what that says about the workings of my mind ;)], but I'm thinking that is more likely in your future, Greg, if you keep on with the short jokes. ;)

Enjoy your pie. :)

REReader said...

Homemade bread rolls for lunches? YUMMMMMMMM! (You're a lucky guy, Sherlock, no kidding!)

Also, pie. :)

Sherlock said...

Lestrade likes it and John likes it too so it's the best.

REReader said...

The rolls or the pie?

(By the way, your cinnamon rolls were very impressive, really very!)

Sherlock said...

I know.

Rolls I was talking about because Lestrade likes making it but pie was good too and we should have more definitely because Reg said we can have more apples.

REReader said...

My sister made apple pie for Rosh Hashanah and it was really good, too. But fresh, homemade rolls (or bread) is best, I agree!

Greg Lestrade said...

Well...I forgot to put the rolls in to cook. Which Sherlock scolded me for, because lazing about on the sofa with John wasn't a good enough excuse.

And now...they're over risen and cook badly, I think!

John H. D. Watson said...

I thought it was an excellent excuse personally…

Greg Lestrade said...

Well...at least I won't be there tomorrow if he doesn't enjoy his lunch.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Well, I won't be either. Thank goodness for school.

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't be surprised if the school call you with allegations of child abuse being levelled at me around 1pm...

John H. D. Watson said...

Over risen homemade rolls...must be illegal.

Greg Lestrade said...

you know he'd think so... just send someone around to slap the cuffs on me.

REReader said...

Heh...all in a good cause, surely! (I hope the rolls came out okay anyway. You never know!)

All this talk of rolls and bread makes me want to bake, although about the most complicated thing I do is muffins. (not the kind we call English Muffins over here, just the quick-bread kind you make in a muffin tin with cupcake papers for easy releasing from the pan)
I am in the process of making my first proper chicken soup of the fall season, with barley cos that's what I had in the cupboard.

I'm at a prison, in the pissing rain. Lovely start to the week. Hope you're all fairing better!

pandabob said...

You're such a lucky guy aren't you Greg ;-)

I hope things have improved for you now :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I wish! I am now soaking, with a very angry prisoner and a car full of blood...

John H. D. Watson said...

Are you all right? Apart from being soaking wet…

REReader said...

....blood? Yeah, you okay, L?

Greg Lestrade said...

Fine. Suspect screaming police brutality decided to head but my car window numerous times.

rsf said...

Why are you at a prison?

Fresh bread is wonderful. One of the frustrations of living alone is knowing that it's nearly impossible to make just enough fresh bread for one person. Luckily, I have an Italian bakery a block away.

Isn't making jam something like canning? I mean, you're preserving the food for later, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

Wonderful... Very glad you're all right though.

Greg Lestrade said...

Few bruises and scrapes, the usual. Little toe rag.

RSF - talking to one of the little scrote's mates.

John H. D. Watson said...

I suspect you're busy, but let me know if you have time for coffee later?

Greg Lestrade said...

will do. bit busy yeah. Is Sherlock climbing the walls because it's been so wet all day? And has he formed some sort of mutiny over rolls?

REReader said...

What a charming person. (Not.) I hope you get a chance to dry off, L.

Hey, maybe the rolls came out tasting good (if different)! How were they, Sherlock?

Greg Lestrade said...

John, I'm waiting for a brief so could be ages if you two are about? Might have to run if they show up though. Love you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh yeah - and let me know if you need dry clothes.

Sherlock is making rolls on his own. I'm not sure how it'll turn out, but it's definitely keeping him occupied.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock won't be moved from his rolls, but Mrs Hudson's up here supervising anyway, so she says I should go. It'd be a bit before I get there though.

Greg Lestrade said...

i've changed already, ta. in sexy tracksuit bottoms now.

don't worry if you're busy.

John H. D. Watson said...

Not busy. I'd like to see you, and not just so I can make sure you're undamaged. You know I can't resist you in sexy tracksuit bottoms.

Greg Lestrade said...

Your autocorrect changed saggy to sexy there.

John H. D. Watson said...

I say it was striving for accuracy, but I'd be afraid of what that meant for our future 'naps' on the couch.

REReader said...

John's autocorrect and your autocorrect are clearly in agreement there, L... ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

His is usually quite well behaved.

Sherlock, remember, poked dough never rises.

In thinking about the etymology/literal meaning of insults...what on earth is a 'toe rag'? And how did it come to mean 'unsavory person'?

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

I assumed it sort of was a pre-cursor to sock. And socks are horrible.

How's the bread, Sherlock? Started the next Great Fire of London?

Anonymous said...

WWI soldiers with trenchfoot had fairly nasty socks, I'm sure. Also possibly rags that they used to try and clean the horribleness off their feet with? Thus making the rags unfit for any other purpose?

Sorry, that was disgusting, I know.

John H. D. Watson said...

The bread has been baked...results are top secret until you get home. I've been banned from the kitchen.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, I'm just on the way. Might pop into Mrs Hs and borrow some of her drugs. I've got a bad hip...which makes me feel distinctly old.

John H. D. Watson said...

From the toe rag earlier?

Greg Lestrade said...

Dunno, actually. him or a vicious assault by the allotment!

I'm just on the way in. Do I need a secret password to get past Sherlock?

REReader said...

Well? Well? How did the bread turn out, Sherlock?

(I hope your hip feels better, L.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Just your warrant card, I think. Our kitchen has hand drawn crime scene tape.

Kestrel337 said...

There's a story in that, I'm sure...

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, it had outer and inner crime scene tape!

The bread looks pretty good!

REReader said...

Yay! (And well-protected, too. :))

rsf said...

I hope it tastes as good as it looks! (We will not speak of the Loaf That Ate The Salt Shaker in my own giddy youth.)

It must have taken a while to hand draw crime scene tape! What's the difference between inner and outer? Or is that just a matter of position?

Greg Lestrade said...

...you haven't booby-trapped the bread, have you Sherlock?

Greg Lestrade said...

RSF - I shall do you a blog about inner/outer cordons!

rsf said...

Oooh, exciting! Although I will confess to a great deal of curiosity about possibly booby-trapped bread as well.

Joolz said...

I'm with you, RSF, curiosity abounds - what have you done to the bread rolls, Sherlock, it sounds very exciting. :)
