brno ossuary

These are all skulls:

It's the second largest ossuary in Europe, and they only found it in 2001. The bones had been all shifted and tumbled by water and time, and they had to clean all of them before they opened it to the public. There's about fifty thousand people buried there.

...Even as I write this, I'm a bit concerned Sherlock will want to go there for his birthday. But I thought it was too interesting not to share.

L fell asleep immediately upon hitting the bed, but I'm still awake. Don't really know why. It feels like it's been a very long week somehow. My shoulder's ached since Wednesday, more than the bruises. Come of the way I twisted when he hit me, I expect. It was harder not to hit him back than I would've thought it would be.

Anyway. I'll try sleep again.

That place looks amazing, I'm sure you'd never get Sherlock out if he got to go visiting - certainly not without some souvenirs hidden in his bag, I'm sure. ;)

Sorry to hear you're still (I typed 'stiff' then and I can't even blame autocorrect - where is my brain going! :)) suffering, John. I think a nice massage from your husband is called for when he's back from work and you can both relax together. :)

As to wanting to retaliate, it must be good to know that you still have the reflexes there ready to hand if it was ever necessary, but the restraint not to follow through unless it was actually called for.

In case it hasn't made its way across the water yet, you guys might be interested in seeing this video of a marriage proposal which is elaborate, amazing, and utterly beautiful:

Sorry you're hurting, John. I hope you feel better soon. Do you have a hot water bottle? I find that sometimes that helps more than anything, especially when the weather starts to change.

That place looks amazing. I bet Sherlock would have some kind of fit if you ever did go there.

I hope you're able to get some rest tonight, and that tomorrow is a peaceful day.

Greg Lestrade said...

You should have said! I'll give it a rub when I'm home if you want.

Ro said...

Sorry you're feeling a bit sore, John. I recommend you take L up on his offer!

Tell you what, I wish I had Sherlock with me today - I'm in Scotland, and we're off to Loch Ness today. I'm sure Sherlock could have helped me prove/disprove the existence of old Nessie.

Looks like we've got a good day for it - looks glorious out there! Gales & rain tomorrow, of course - for a bit of balance!

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad somewhere has nice weather. It's grey and drizzly and wet and misty here.

Greg Lestrade said...

...and I've drunk too much coffee. I blame the weather ;)

Small Hobbit said...

Does this mean you are now hyper and running round in small circles?

Rider said...

No it means he's English... it's always because of the weather.

Greg Lestrade said...

I was vibrating with caffeine! Better now ;)

Danger, there's a risk I can wrap everything up in an hour or so, if you want to meet up after.

pandabob said...

Chance of an early finish sounds good Greg I hope you manage it :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - love to :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Joolz - stiff is accurate as well! Not that kind of... You know what I mean.

it must be good to know that you still have the reflexes there ready to hand if it was ever necessary, but the restraint not to follow through unless it was actually called for

That's a much more positive view of it that I was able to come up with. Thank you.

Ella - that is a lovely video. Made me smile.

Pip - I have a hot DI, does that count?

L - You should have said! I'll give it a rub when I'm home if you want.

Thanks. I suppose I just don't think about it...until I think about it. If you see what I mean.

Ro - ha, good luck! I imagine Sherlock would find that far more exciting even than cake, which is the best we'll manage here.

Joolz said...

Sure, John, we'll believe your 'stiffness' qualifications... ;)

I know how important it must be to you to be able to protect your 'family' so knowing the skills are still there has got to make you feel good so positivity is definitely the way to go. :)

Enjoy the rest of your day, hope you're all now together - are you planning to stop off somewhere nice on the way home from meeting Greg.

Joolz said...

*"Sure, John, we'll believe your 'stiffness' qualifications..."* (how do you italicise it when you do your quotes, John?)

Just realised that instead of that being a justification as I meant it that it sounds as if you have been taking exams or achieving awards - but maybe Greg would agree with that way of looking at it too. ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

[em]you do it like this[/em], except with arrow brackets instead of normal ones. or you can use i instead of em. b will make it bold.

My husband is going to say something about getting high marks in stiffness, just wait...

Greg Lestrade said...

You do get high marks in stiffness. And even I can diagnose one type of stiffness. Not the shoulder sort, unfortunately.

John H. D. Watson said...

I prefer the other sort anyway.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad to hear it! Because sometimes I positively encourage the other sort ;)

Sherlock has begged for fish and chips for dinner... do we give in?

Joolz said...

[em]you do it like this[/em]
Thanks for that, John, that's great. :)

And of course Greg is going to give you absolutely the highest marks - he wouldn't dare not to, would he ;) - not unless he's trying to purposely seek out punishment in one form or another! Now I don't know which option he's going to choose as both sound very tempting... ;)

pandabob said...

Did you give in to Sherlock? I would have fish and chips sounds delicious :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

He wasn't really fighting a hard battle!

Although I've discovered my husband doesn't like mushy peas. These things should really be declared before marriage! He won't even try them...

pandabob said...

He won't even try them? What kind of example is that to be setting for Sherlock? ;-)

I hope they were/are good :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

I've tried them many times!

Greg Lestrade said...

Hmmm. I honestly don't think there is any item you can purchase from a chippy that isn't divine. Well, maybe not saveloys... but they're still good!

Mushy pea fritters are like heaven in batter.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'f you make them, I'll try yours. Otherwise no.

Greg Lestrade said...

Aww, I'm touched!! But I could never bring myself to deep fry stuff. Better left to the professionals!

Love you. Love my life with you. Even if it involves you pulling hideous faces at my lovely mushy peas!

John H. D. Watson said...

It does, I'm afraid. I should've put it in the vows. I love you too :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock and I both forgive your incorrectness in this matter. Not that he cares as long as there's battered sausage for him!

John H. D. Watson said...

True enough. Anything planned for tomorrow?

Sherlock said...

You both have too much vinegar on your chips.

pandabob said...

There's no such thing as too much vinegar Sherlock!

did you enjoy your dinner?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yup, cheap, yummy, anti-Sherlock device!

No, Danger, not really. We could watch a bit of triathlon, if we felt like it? Guess it depends on the weather!

Sherlock said...

Yes it's nice I like the crispy chips the best and ketchup and pineapple fritters.

pandabob said...

I'm glad you enjoyed dinner as much as Greg seems to have Sherlock ;-)

Kestrel337 said...

Ketchup and pineapple fritters?

Saw a Folsom Jail Blues tee-shirt on a fellow grocery shopper today. It made me think of the blogs and smile.

Sherlock said...

Not ketchup on pineapple but ketchup with chips and pineapple fritters and I'm 8 soon and that definitely means I should be allowed to stay up later like half past ten at least.

Greg Lestrade said...

For when you see this in the morning - no, you do not get to stay up later. Ten PM is already late for someone your age!!

John H. D. Watson said...

I was at least in my room, if not in bed, by 8pm every night until I was ten. Which is to say: no.

Greg Lestrade said...

Exactly!!

Maybe we should feed him less, see if he runs out of energy sooner ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

That reminds me, will you make pancakes tomorrow? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, you do know that looking at me with pleading eyes makes it impossible for me to refuse you anything. Of course there will be pancakes.

John H. D. Watson said...

Thank you, love. You're definitely my favourite husband.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad to hear it!

We've probably got some blackberries from the allotment still. Unless Sherlock hoovered them all up. Can do something nice with them for pancakes.

John H. D. Watson said...

Should be delicious!

Greg Lestrade said...

sweet talker ;)

REReader said...

Let's see...what we call chips you call crisps, and what you call chips we call fries, right?

Now I really want crispy chips with ketchup (UK usage) and blackberry pancakes and also potato chips (US usage)....(If I had any of that now I'd feel sick after, but I want it ALL! :D)

Greg Lestrade said...

Up making pancakes for my husband ;). True love!

RR - chips are chunky. We call the tiny skinny things fries, that fast food places serve.

REReader said...

Technically, I believe, we call the thin ones shoestring fries, the chunky ones ones steak fries, and the zigzaggy ones crinkle fries, but we call them all French fries. And they are all yummy. (And none are eaten with vinegar! Ketchup or salt or both, but not vinegar. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Vinegar and chips go together like...rhubarb and custard. They were meant to be.

REReader said...

.... Not for those allergic/sensitive to vinegar, they don't!

Doesn't the vinegar make them soggy?

Greg Lestrade said...

Err .. No, obviously not for people with allergies.

Chips don't last long enough around here to go soggy.

Anon Without A Name said...

Chips with salt and vinegar - food made in heaven :-)

Anonymous said...

Surely that would depend on whether they were allergic to rhubarb aswell wouldn't it rereader? ;-)

REReader said...

Heh, yes, well, I suppose--in the sense that then they'd neither go well with anything!

(Which is pretty much what I think vinegar goes well with. But I don't know if that's the intrinsic taste or the association, so I make no judgment. :))

Anonymous said...

I've had vinegar crisps before. But not vinegar on fries.

I have a friend who makes his own dipping sauce for fries out of ketchup and mayonnaise. we don't eat out together very often.

rhubarb custard sounds lovely.

ella

Greg Lestrade said...

Ketchup and mayo together is lovely! Like burger sauce :)

It's heaving down with rain here. Sherlock is climbing the walls.

One day we should do a mass bike ride together,Danger.

Kestrel337 said...

You can have the rhubarb, but I'll take the chips (the medium thick ones with the skin still on) and malt vinegar. yum yummy yum.

Ella, hubs and I call that mixture 'hundred island' sauce. I usually throw in a dash of worcestershire sauce when I make it at home.

John H. D. Watson said...

I feel like someone's going to suggest chips with custard next…

L - you mean with other people?

REReader said...

I feel like someone's going to suggest chips with custard next…

Just NO!

How were the blackberry pancakes?

Anonymous said...

Heaving down rain? That's unfortunate. Today my parents are starting their 2 week vacation in the UK with a bus tour of London. Mom will be very disappointed. Though I did warn her to expect it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - yeah. I think it was the ace cafe run down to Brighton today. There's something special about being on a road filled with bikes. It'd be fun.

I don't think chips and custard would be bad!

John H. D. Watson said...

L - that'd be great, yeah. Sounds like fun.

RR - the pancakes were delicious. I don't think he's ever made us anything that isn't :)

REReader said...

:). * is hungry* (*not for chips*)

Greg Lestrade said...

Bear in mind this man has eaten ration packs. He has low standards ;)

REReader said...

On the contrary--he has a real basis for comparison!

Anonymous said...

I think it should be fish fingers and custard, surely!

REReader said...

... NO!

:D

Small Hobbit said...

Kholly, if your Mum says anything about the rain you can tell her that it is a genuine British experience and that moaning about the weather is also typically British ;)

Proper chips (ie from the chippie) must have salt and vinegar. But not custard.

Unknown said...

mushy peas looked pretty dodgy to me, and I admit I did not try them when I was in Kent in '09. But I did get a little jar of Marmite to try, and while it's a bit salty for just putting on a cracker, I think I will like it in things like soup and when I make rice (I put all kinds of chopped onion, celery, carrot, etc in rice and also make it with real chicken stock)
Regarding kids' bedtimes, my daughter had lights-out at 7 pm from when she started kindergarten till somewhere around junior high. I can't imagine the mess we'd have been in if she had stayed up till 10 every night! But, whatever works for you is what you should do.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm assuming there's a reference to fish fingers and custard I'm not aware of...

Mushy peas are glorious. End of :)

I've been some sort of domestic god today. May now rest back on my laurels... ;)

Anonymous said...

It's raining here too. Still. Again. There's something like 500 people on the lists of the missing, though I think the official death count is still only at 4 or 5. Helicopter evacuations have been successfully pulling people out of the mountains (including 2 hikers on Longs Peak who picked the absolute worst time to get stranded on a mountain).

Once it stops raining, everything will dry pretty quickly, but still...it needs to stop first.

Working yesterday and domestic god today! You put me and my lazy weekend to shame Greg ;-)

REReader said...

Have you been baking/cooking up a storm today, then? That's a good way to spend a rainy Sunday. :)

Anonymous said...

Also, the number of local law enforcement agencies that have had to tweet things like, "please do not report emergencies to this account. Call 911. This account is not monitored24/7" is...discouraging.

I hope that the weather clears up and there are no more victims, Ella. Stay safe!

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - yeah, all the Met police ones have to say that. It is worrying, isn't it?? I do hope everyone's found safely.

And yes, cooked biscuits, bread, pizza, and cake. Well, Sherlock cooked cake and biscuits, really, and helped a lot with the others.

REReader said...

Then applause to the both of you!

Anonymous said...

That all sounds delicious.

Ella

Sherlock said...

AND pancakes! I helped with them too and the rolls aren't done yet but we just ate the pizza. I like making things to eat.

REReader said...

Cooking and baking is a major life-skill, one that lots of grownups haven't mastered, so well done, you!

And it's fun, and creative--and not just on the eating end. :) (I'm very impressed, because I can follow recipes, but it's not the same as really learning to cook.)

Anonymous said...

Lestrade, I can't get to your blog. Is anyone else having issues? Probably my phones just being dumb.

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm not, but I've had times when I can't get to either of them on my phone for 15 minutes or so recently, and then they're back like they were never gone... no explanation.

Anonymous said...

The fish fingers and custard is from Doctor Who:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo2RKAHu-kI

Sorry, I'm a massive geek!

Anyhoo, sounds like you've been cooking some rather more appealing delicacies; domestic deity indeed! :)

REReader said...

:D

(Dr Who regardless...just no!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Anon - Thanks! But...well, fish fingers belong in fish-finger sandwiches (with ketchup and mayo.)

Piplover said...

Sounds like a wonderful way to pass a Sunday! Right now it's still in the 90s F here, but we're supposed to be getting a bit cooler weather soon. I hope so, I want to bake again!

I love mushy peas, I think they're glorious!

Unknown said...

holy cow, Ella, stay safe!

Maybe I'll try mushy peas next time... I know some of the guys like them. We've been talking about going to Dartmoor in 2014. Thing is, I grew up with a mom who took gardening very seriously, so a favorite summer pastime was sitting in the pea patch picking and eating them right off the vines. And of course endless hours shelling. It's been a major adjustment, eating commercial frozen petit-peas, only made possible by the advances in fresh-freezing tech. Ordinary frozen peas are too big and starchy, ick.
