Sherlock's going to love this.
Lord Howe Island Stick Insect hatching from Zoos Victoria on Vimeo.
There's an amazing article about them too.
On Lord Howe, there used to be an insect, famous for being big. It's a stick insect, a critter that masquerades as a piece of wood, and the Lord Howe Island version was so large — as big as a human hand — that the Europeans labeled it a "tree lobster" because of its size and hard, lobsterlike exoskeleton.

I wouldn't want to find one in my slipper, but I hope they get a second chance.
Went for a nice ride with L this afternoon while Sherlock was squeezing all possible information of a visiting biologist about the pond. L even rode on the back for a while, with no apparent heart attacks. I imagine he'll still be glad when I get my own though.
198 comments:
Not glad exactly...but I think you'll enjoy it. And when Sherlock's big enough, all four off us can go touring.
Just make sure you get something that'll keep up with mine :)
Sorry not to have me clinging like a limpet to your back? ;)
You can help me find something. It'll be fun.
I like you clinging to my back!
We can go on lots of test rides.
Can't stop myself wanting to help that stick insect. It looks so awkward.
I'll still ride with you. It's a completely different experience than doing it on my own.
It does, I can't believe it all fit in that tiny pod.
Yes, riding someone else is completely different from going solo.
I mean with someone else.
Do you find it easier being a pillion now, because you can anticipate the turns etc. or harder, because you find yourself trying to 'ride' more, and react at different times to me?
*reads conversation*
*filth overload*
*brain 'slpode*
Bravo, gentlemen. Bravo.
Nameless - I wasn't even doing it on purpose...
L - maybe a bit easier? I think it'll be easier in the future when it becomes more instinctive. Right now, my attention still wanders off and I'm not always anticipating what you'll do at all; I'm thinking about...oh, giant stick insects or something.
I think I'd go for stick insects over rats. It did look incredibly vulnerable whilst trying to hatch.
And yes riding together would be a completely different experience from going solo.
John - clearly Lestrade is rubbing off on you.
Right, got it. You're straddling a powerful bike, arms around your leather-clad boyfriend, groin against my arse, and your mind wanders to...
stick insects. Giant ones.
I can assure you that's not what I was thinking about when I was sitting with you between my thighs.
Nameless said it so much more succinctly than me...
Well not today, obviously. I hadn't even seen the video yet. :)
what was it today? Jam coated Badgers?
Nothing to do with either badger or jam, I assure you.
Right.
I'm a bit worried abut how easy those badgers were. Shacking up after two minutes. Is that a good message to send out?
"Meet someone, cover yourself in jam, and they'll share your burrow before you've even got your mug of tea". I'm not sure...
I should shut up. Sherlock'll be persuading Mrs T to have a badger sett for the school next.
Someone needs to collect those comments and preserve them for posterity. Or to embarrass the authors with later on. Whichever.
They could've just been flatmates... Burrow-mates?
There has to be a bad joke there regarding game, sett and match...
I'm fairly sure they only met each other over that honey-pot. SO to speak.
It just gets worse. I think the authors need to explain themselves. Slathering poor wild animals in jam and chucking them in to nest together...
On the subject of which, did you see one of the degus having a sneezing fit in the bath earlier? Sneezing shouldn't ever be adorable, really, yet somehow it was...
...I might need to look at it again. I read it in the early hours of the morning and you know I'm not at my best then.
I did, yeah. Scarily cute. (And I used to have a girlfriend who sounded just like that when she sneezed.)
Ha, so did I, as it was being written. For all I know I dreamt half of it...
It's the way they look surprised at themselves for a moment, before carrying on squirming about in their dust bath. Did you see that sneezing panda that was absolutely everywhere ages ago? Viral in the sense that most computers in the office seemed to have a sneezing panda on them at one point... but it was sort of hilarious.
I don't think I did see the sneezing panda. You could put the goos on youtube, maybe they'd go viral...
Ha, maybe...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAcdvmnZ_GM
There. Sneezing panda. Very unlike a sneezing degu.
If you dreamt it it was a mass hallucination of a dream.
Sneezing Degus! even the idea is cute :-)
Anony
Ha! Scared its mum half to death. I'm glad the degus don't sneeze quite so violently, they'd get their bath all over the place even more than they manage to now!
yeah, they do have special talent for flinging dust around. I'm sure next tiem Sherlock gets glitter everywhere they'll manage to find any leftovers and be glitterball goos.
All puffed up and dusty and glittery... I can see it now.
They can have Christmas party hats next year. They'd eat them, but y'know, it's the thought...
Little degus sized Christmas jumpers...
..they'd eat those, as well.
Mind you, if you got me a Christmas jumper I'd be tempted to eat it, too, so can't blame them. :)
When I get you one, I'll supervise your wearing of it until after the photo is taken...
I'm fairly sure it would be nigh on impossible to force a jumper onto an unwilling person.
You might have more luck getting me in a Christmas-themed strait jacket.
I distinctly remember this being your idea, you know... Horrible jumpers all round and photos to traumatise my father. I'll find the comment if I have to.
Mmm. Don't recall that.
Anyway, now I know your father has fine taste in football teams, so I feel the trauma of meeting the three of us for the first time will be quite enough for him for one lifetime.
Oh right, teaming up against me already! We're definitely taking the dogs for distraction purposes. Maybe the degus too.
Not teaming up against you :(
Just trying to get out of wearing a Christmas jumper.
I can't pretend I'm not wondering what your folks'll make of us though.
I know.
You may find out sooner than you want to. Mum's been threatening to come down to London for a few days.
Hey, me and the boys can always go an camp with whichever protesters are handy at the time. We'll only do what you're comfy with.
But your folks could kip in a very nicely decorated bedroom :)
How about if I go and camp with protesters? Sorry. No, she/they would probably stay with Harry, she's got a spare room and a lot less chaos. Anyway, might not even happen. Harry says she's been talking about it for a month and nothing's come of it yet.
Ah, okay.
I suppose as a personal preference I'd chose a time when you didn't have to say "And here's Lestrade, who'll accompany you around London while I'm at work as he's currently suspended from his job"
But then again, that's preferable to me needing to send them a visiting order and have them subjected to a full body search and meeting me in the Scrubs...
If we run away to Brazil, we could avoid them as well as prison.
Deal.
Now...bed? I think when I was distracted earlier I may have sort of promised Sherlock he could have pancakes in the morning, and go swimming... and it's nearly half one.
Bed sounds wonderful.
bed's bed.
You're wonderful.
True fact: My high school history teacher was an intense and occasionally scary person, but a very good teacher and coach. When he sneezed, he sounded like a kitten sneezing. It was hilarious.
Assuming facts not in evidence.
never mind i apparently didnt even read the story disregard sorry
Hey...commenters in the American Midwest/South...are y'all okay?
Made it through to Dallas without seeing much. Waiting for word on family in S. Illinois.
You okay, DW?
I was only kidding. I loved the badger, and you lot were very kind to write the story for me.
DW - hope you get to hear soon.
DW - hope you hear good news soon.
Hope alls ok DW
Anony
All good up here in Indiana. The hail was ugly for a bit, that's all, but the tornado from that cell dropped about 40 mi past us. And, of course, one of towns was wiped off the map. Its very sad. Hope you've heard from your family, DW.
Glad to hear it Maz.
I hope your family are okay, DW.
And anyone else reading who is/has friends or family caught up in it.
Yeah. I know.
Anything we can do to help you? - obviously being an ocean away is a bit awkward.
But you manage to help me, so... I can try a story. Or anything else that would distract you?
Not really, thanks though. It's just one of those periods of life when everything seems to go wrong, and I'm just...tired and out of sorts. Sorry for the mess.
I will say, in our defence, that the paw-strengthening exercise George was going to demonstrate was opening a jar of jam. I'm certain I have no idea what you were expecting.
Glad to hear you're all ok, Maz.
... right. All about the jam, huh?
No need for apologies - hope life starts going right for you soon.
You're a very nice person, you know. You and Doc really deserve each otter. <3
Otters, badgers...do I deserve a platypus? I'd like a platypus.
John reminds me a bit of a platypus. Sometimes hard to understand, very cuddly looking, but got those nasty spines if you attack him...
Sometimes looks slightly disapproving and grumpy, but adorable at the same time...
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkisdycpBO1qicv3wo1_500.jpg
You're all very nice people, too. When the boys told me they'd made me a blog I didn't think I'd use it. I definitely didn't think anyone would read it. But now I'm an addict! And it's all because you lot are so kind and full of good advice.
You can have a platypus if you'd like, but I would've thought more hedgehog.
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01541/snowball_1541561c.jpg
Those ones even have the right colour spikes. And they're pretty easy-going, even if you kick them accidentally.
All the best, DW. I really hope things turn around for you soon. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
DW - yeah, hope things improve for you soon. *Sending positive vibes from across the pond.*
Thanks, guys. Y'all are too nice. :) <3
Doc, in my travels yesterday, I saw something that made me think of you and your Lestallion (but mostly you).
https://img-s.foursquare.com/derived_pix/SF2RFWMT4XB4XPUYP1MEENPGPRPKBTG4GMS0Q4ZKGGLV4EEL_300x300.jpg
That is all.
Oh...that is brilliant.
DW - what they all said <3
DW - that really is amazing. Strangely prefect even.
And I'm sorry things are hard right now. I hope they get better soon and do tell us if there's anything we can do to help.
Strangely prefect even.
Like you, then. :)
(It's hard to keep my hands off you in the swimming pool, you know?)
Mmhmm, I do know.
I did nothing to outrage public decency.
Ha, no, you just told me what you'd like to do.
It's a good reason to a. wrap my arms around you and whisper in your ear. and b. watch other people's reactions.
Sherlock's swimming's getting good though.
It's good for them. And better for me.
He is doing really well. We should go somewhere with a nice beach at some point. Somewhere warm.
It makes me happy just to hear about you guys having fun swimming. Makes me forget that it's winter, for a second or two. (I should not complain, we have had a ridiculously warm winter here-- this week is the first snow that's stuck around since the freak Halloween snowstorm.)
Well, off I go to pretend to be someone else, for the evening. I wish all of you happy weekends!
Mm. Where should we go?
Have fun, AftSO.
Spain? Greece?
Yeah. Either.
I suppose we have to work everything out around term dates now. Shame. I like going places when no one else is there.
Yeah, I suppose so. We could take Sherlock out of school for a little while, but I think Mycroft's school might...put our heads on a spike.
I dunno, it's a posh school. They might run to two spikes - one each. One either side of the gates, or something.
At least his holiday is a bit longer.
Or we just need to pick somewhere a long way from...anywhere.
Hmmm, yeah. That sounds good just anyway. Somewhere remote and sunny.
You're just saying that so no one will see me in my shorts and flip flops, aren't you...
I don't mind your shorts and flip flops! Mycroft on the other hand...
Might buy these:
http://www.surfanic.co.uk/getimage.aspx?imageid=14716&size=large&dimensions=500
...I don't even know what to say. They're certainly...impressive.
well you know, beach holiday demands beach wear...
And you complained about my jumper.
Mycroft - if you're reading this - I promise I won't buy anything like that.
But if John makes me wear a jumper at Christmas, I'll make him wear flowery boardshorts next summer.
If you make me wear those, I think I'll be required to surf and say 'dude' a lot.
Nah, I'd get you these.
http://www.aussiebum.com/en/swimwear/1060/creative/
Those are not boardshorts! Those are...not anything I will be wearing public.
Lestrade - they're a bit tame, don't you think? How about you and John in matching pairs of these? http://www.transsurf.co.uk/images/products/main/board-shorts-lucky-in-kentu.jpg
They're beachwear!
And you'd look like Daniel Craig, walking out of the surf...
Nameless - those are might fine.
I would definitely not look like Daniel Craig. You wear them. I'll wear Nameless's.
You would!
You'll wear Nameless's? That's rather presumtive that she'll lend them to you. Nameless - do tell, what do your swimmers look like? I mean...I don't want to presume, but I'm imagining Danger might look a little odd in a woman's swimming costume. But if it's what he wants, who am I to argue??
You'll have to have matching whichever you go with. :-)
John I'm sure you'd look better than Daniel Craig not sure about Lestrade though ;-)
Anony
Wouldn't.
...I walked right into that didn't I.
You'll have to have matching whichever you go with.
At least he couldn't get me anything too horrible that way.
John - Yes you did.
Greg - As one of the story writers, I would like to point out that the badgers were written with the best of intentions. =)
Mazarin, DW and everyone else with family in the Midwest/South is all right. *hugs to those who needs them*
~A from NW
These come with computer wallpaper...
http://www.aussiebum.com/en/swimwear/1610/black%20w11/
A - I know. The badgers were very nice.
Danger - those are a bit boring. And if I wanted wallpaper like that I'd just use a few photos I have of you...
If the swimwear gets much smaller John it'll be disappearing!!
I just made the mistake of searching a certain term relating to australian swimwear, won't be doing that again!!
Anony
Terrifying thought.
Not this one then?
http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/australianimpressionism/education/images/contemp/aussiebum_shearing_600.jpg
err...few too many sheep for my tastes.
It's no good, trying to find pictures to retaliate with and they all make me feel like a dirty old man.
When did everyone get so young?
Ha. I think models were always that age.
I'm sure they used to have body hair though... once upon a time.
Maybe they're breeding them without now, to save on waxing costs.
heh, maybe.
Or that's what's going to happen next in the picture you posted - shearing models, not sheep.
I'm hungry. Why am I hungry? Going to sound like Sherlock if I go foraging a few hours after having eaten a perfectly good meal.
When I first saw that picture, I honestly thought that was what was happening.
We could have ice cream...
Ha!
...are you sure Sherlock hasn't linked up the ice cream to an alarm in his room?
I think we've got some of that chocolate caramel pecan one.
And it's got nuts in, that makes it almost healthy.
chocolate is technically a...err...I don't know what it is. A fruit? It grows, anyway, so it must be like... a healthy thing, right?
And Bumble bees make caramel. Just like bees make honey and wasps make Marmite. So it's natural too.
(Sherlock, he's making me do this.)
Wasps are awful. Makes perfect sense that they're responsible for marmite.
Why are wasps more awful than bees?? I mean, they're a bit thuggish, but I don't think you can really say they're worse than bees. They're just trying to get by.
I'm assuming by the way you're snuggled into a woolly jumper, I'm not going to be allowed to eat this ice-cream off your bum? Which is really the only way it would be improved...
Quite clearly only a proportion of the activity in that picture is shearing. I'm not sure what you'd call the rest of it...
John - Well, aren't you forward? I don't think I've ever had a hot doctor invite himself into my swimwear before :-p Sadly, I can't actually swim, so my cossie is purely for beachwear/sunbathing (not that I do a huge amount of that). It's a bit like this: http://www.simplyswim.com/images/equipment/SwimsuitCare/SwimSuitCare2.jpg, except sized for someone rather shorter and rounder than that model. Not sure it'd be your style...
If pictures on the internet are anything to go by, apparently no-one has *any* body hair anymore. Disconcerting.
Wasps are mean. They chase you.
I'm afraid you are correct. We could eat it in bed though.
He is very forward, Nameless. I can only apologise.
I was just an honest copper, going about my business, before he kidnapped me onto his sofa. Now look at me.
Although the colours would suit him. Just a shame to cover up his body. It is very nice.
The body hair issue does honestly make me feel...well, old! And I don't find young, skinny, hairless models attractive. They look too much like kids.
Ice cream in bed? Very decadent... As long as you don't make the sheets sticky...again.
Wasps don't chase you any more than bees do! Although they might chase you, to ask you why you don't appreciate their hard work making all the yummy Marmite.
Nameless - you and L both knew what I meant! I can't say that it would be hugely worse than those tiny plaid shorts though.
They do chase you more than bees do! They're aggressive!
You just let me worry about the sheets, I'm the one who'll be washing them.
You're just picking on them now.
Hey, I'll have you know I'm almost house trained, now I've been knocking about the flat for so long, not always supervised. Haven't chewed the furniture or scratched the doors or anything.
You were the one accusing me of...non-house-trainedness. Or something. I don't know. Bed?
(Federer won today, by the way.)
Wasn't. Just don't wriggle if I accidentally drop ice cream on you...
Ah, no wonder you're so happy.
Yeah, bed.
No promises. Depends where you drop it.
The entire tournament, not just a match.
An important tournament?
I promise to lick...er..clean it off anywhere I drop it.
Well...not an unimportant tournament. I would probably be saying it wasn't important if he hadn't won it though.
Ah, so kind... :)
John - I think we need pics of you in both to decide which would be "worse".
Lestrade - you are incorrigible :-) Also, John's right about wasps.
I suppose he doesn't enter unimportant tournaments.
I'm glad! He should win more, if it makes you smile like this.
Nameless - I agree.
Apart form the wasp part. Poor wasps. And the incorrigible part. Poor Lestrades.
Nameless - it's times like this I'm glad L doesn't know how to use photoshop.
L - :)
I can get one of the boys to help me!
Although you've just reminded me of a picture of you I've been keeping for a special occasion... which doesn't require photoshop.
You are not getting either of them to help you photoshop me into inappropriate swimwear!
Oh no...I can't wait. Or, actually, I can.
I now have an image of J in Nameless' swimming costume and L in boardshorts with pictures of wasps on them. Both of whom are liberally covered in ice cream. I may just go to bed before my brain explodes ;)
No. That would be wrong. They're only kids.
I'll get them to teach me how to photoshop you into entirely appropriate swimwear.
Don't know what you're worrying about - Nicky'll only give you something worse for retaliation.
Aren't we going to have enough photos stockpiled at some point for mutually assured destruction? A photographic cold war?
Dunno. I'm sure Nicky has all the originals, just in case she needs them again.
I'm at a loss what else she could find of me...yet she still manages it.
I'll call your mum, make sure if they come down they bring me fresh ammo.
I'll be hiding your phone in the morning.
Come on, bed, really this time.
Coming, dear.
I hope no one at the Holmes-Watson-Lestrade home sees this 'til morning, but as long as I'm here...
I'm a bit worried abut how easy those badgers were. Shacking up after two minutes. Is that a good message to send out?
Someone needs to collect those comments and preserve them for posterity. Or to embarrass the authors with later on. Whichever.
It just gets worse. I think the authors need to explain themselves. Slathering poor wild animals in jam and chucking them in to nest together...
Hey!!! I resemble those remarks!!!
(Actually and alas, I'm pretty sure my bits were the only dull ones and no good for either amusement or embarrassment. Good for lulling people to sleep, though, perhaps!)
I hope your life smooths out soon, DW. Let me know if there's anything I can do, being that I'm a bit closer than London...
None of the parts were dull, RR. They were all brilliant, the plot was brilliant, the badgers were brilliant, and the jam was double brilliant.
(Thanks)
The jam was undoubtedly brilliant. :)
I'm still not sure what's supposed to be wrong with shacking up with someone after two minutes... especially if they've got a nice snuggly burrow and a range of tasty preserves :-)
You forgot to mention superior pawicurist skillz.
Nameless - I'd have thought they'd be out, catching the criminal! Not sticking together with jammy fur.
Jack could at least have made George sleep on the sofa...
:)
Maybe some other time. ;)
Sometimes staying in an getting sticky is more fun... even if you do end up sleeping on the sofa :-)
A) they'd already caught the bad guy, hence the scuffle that broke the claw
B) Nameless, sometimes its the sleeping on the sofa that causes the stickiness, if J and G are.any measure...
DW - wasn't that ice cream rather than jam? Or should I be thinking of other things?
Think earlier, SH. Or ask our intrepid DI to give his opinion of...sleeping on the sofa. Especially after a hard day of Sherlock-seeking, tree-buying, etc.
DW - I'm sorry, I obviously wasn't reading closely enough.
And I can assure you it wasn't sleeping on the sofa that caused the stickiness...
Fine, if you want to be pedantic. The *invitation* to...sleep on the sofa. And what I can only imagine was the ensuing act of gratitude.
And there was I assuming that it was a total coincidence the badgers were named J... and G...
That "gratitude" didn't come out how I meant. Think more...appreciation for the Doc's finer features and emotional relief than strictly quid pro quo.
See what I mean about being a bit out of sorts?
Heh, to be honest, you could just put a full stop after 'ensuing act', DW ;)
You're right.
On another note, I thought of another limerick while I've been waiting here.
Two badgers met saving a pot
When a poor claw found itself caught
With a quick pawicure
And some jam in his fur
A cute burrow-mate Jack then got.
A fake sonnet (RR, look away)
I wandered the Net for many a day
Trying to find a new source to amuse
And keep that Damn ennui at bay
But site upon site my advances refused.
"Is there nowhere in reach of my PC"
I did cry "to learn how to set baked Alaska on fire
Or to see gorgeous ics of a fort on the sea
Or hear tell of braveness out on the mire?"
Then Lo to my seeking keyboard did come
The blogs of a Yard-man and a cute doc
And boys with enough smarts in in their thumbs
To make Einstein's IQ seem low as a rock's
These blogs full of fondness, humor, and cheer
Recipies, videos, and sly winks and grins
With commenters hailing from far and from near
And cheeres every time Mr. Federicorn wins
But most of all these posts tell the story of love
Started with a sofa and a push from above.
(I'm waiting for bail money to clear and the Sherriff to release my brother. Poetry prevents fratricide. I'll stop cluttering your blog if you like.)
DW - *hugs* I love the poetry! =)
And um, eep! re: sibling issues. (The family is filing taxes this weekend; the yelling between certain members has been nearly constant. *sighs*)
~A from NW
DW - firstly, that's brilliant. I particularly like the last two lines :)
Secondly, you never clutter. You're more than welcome, whenever you comment.
Thirdly...you sound like you're having a bad day/time of it. And...I can only commiserate on the brother front. Mine has, thankfully, not been arrested again. Or at least, no one's told me if he has. I hope yours is...grateful? repentant? Whatever you need him to be? I don't know. You know where we are, if you want.
Yeah, DW, what L said. If you want to talk, we want to listen.
He's not grateful. In fact, he immediately asked me for more money. I only bailed him out because my father had knee surgery and doing the hour commute to/from work for him is killing me, so the unemployed one can chauffeur him for a while.
DW thats fab :-)
Hope you're having a better time of things soon.
Anony
Wow. I...I don't know what to say. And I'm very aware I'm hardly in a position, family-wise to try and dole out any advice.
Does your Father have any sway with him? If he's going to be spending all that time with him?
the unemployed one can chauffeur him for a while
Will he?
He will if he knows what's good for him, RR. If he wants to eat and sleep somewhere other than jail.
And no, Lestrade. I predict many hours of stony silence.
God...families. I'm sorry. I won't presume to offer any advice either, heaven knows I've never been able to help Harry.
The poetry's brilliant though. I hope it cheered you up a little as well as preventing fratricide.
Right. I don't know what to say.
I hope he sees sense, although I know from experience that that can be asking rather a lot.
He will if he knows what's good for him, RR. If he wants to eat and sleep somewhere other than jail.
Good.
(You know where to find us, yeah?)
Thanks, guys. You help even when you don't know you are, since this is just the latest in a series of...discouragements. All the <3s.
DW the pome was brilliant - and I echo the thoughts. As for other matters, will you accept a long distance hug?
Oh, siblings. It's insane dealing with them, isn't it? Good luck, DW. I hope things work out, and as everyone said, you know where to find us.
Wow, I go away for a day and so much happens! I have quite enjoyed looking at all of this while on my dinner break at work. Makes the long day a little more worthwhile, and hopefully nobody saw me while I was loading any of the Aussiebum links.
Speaking of underwear, and underwear models, has nobody heard about the terrible pandemic virus that caused all the models' and actors' and actresses' body hair to fall out, back in the 80s some time? I'm too young to remember this, but I'm told it definitely happened.
I hope that all of you who are having interesting times with family (but not in a good way) get some peace sometime soon (especially you DW, because jeez), and that all sources of stickiness get resolved in a manner which is satisfactory to all.
" all sources of stickiness get resolved in a manner which is satisfactory to all."
Excellent, AftSO.
DW, your poetry is awesome, and I get the distinct impression that your are too. <3
Mutual satisfaction is the best way to resolve stickiness, isn't it, DW? I mean, it's just better when everyone gets consulted about both the causes and the cleanup of the sticky....
Very inspiring poetry and best of luck on the useless brother front, DW.
Thanks, Nameless and H. :)
Well put, AftSO.
So, if we start commenting over here, does it make it a blog crawl/hop? Cause if so, there's not near enough alcohol...
I don't drink in the normal run of events, but man I could use one today, so I'm in for the blog crawl!

Bad day?
Just read about your cat, CR--I'm so sorry.
Thanks for the confirmation about Hawaii's beauty, Ria! The photos I've seen always look too gorgeous to be real. :(
I have to get up and working on those food baskets, which is fun given that today is a minor fast (minor means sunrise to full dark only)! And then tomorrow we all end up in a sugar coma, seeing as people mostly give each other baked goods and candy. :)
I hope you're feeling a bit better today, John--and you're finally seeing signs of hitting desktop, L!
Are you playing one of the pirates in your play, Sherlock? (Because of the sword.) Maybe you and John can buy some hamantaschen in a bakery tomorrow for Purim. :)
I think the boss drank all the alcohol last night. He looks terrible!
Hope you're feeling better, John. Sadistic bastards, those physiotherapists.
I'm up for a blog crawl - pour me a drink DW.
Very sorry to hear about your cat CR, it's always hard.
L - given Sally's comment, how are you feeling?
Is he likely to get out of work, without taking it home with him, at a reasonable hour tonight Sally? I don't like the idea of him looking terrible but probably best you don't tell him I said that ;-)

Probably not. Although I can see him now, which I couldn't yesterday, cos he built a wall of files between us. So he's winning.
And before he says he's fine, he's drinking water. I've never seen him drink water before. Unless its been heated and poured over coffee.
That is worrying, Water!!
Be brave and sort him out Sally :-)
I guess if he has to take work home that would be better than staying there all night but it doesn't seem all that fair that he gets suspended and goes through all that stress and then goes back to work to catch up on all the work he should have had those days to do.
Look after him Sally
Anony
Hi, Sally, good to see you again!
How do you like your chances of persuading him to go home if you promise to send or bring all or most of the paper mountains on his desk home after him? (I'm afraid my mind went immediately to migraine, which I hope it's not. But water!)
I'm brave, not stupid. All he'll do is tell me he's fine, already tried. Same answer, just sounds a bit more annoyed each time.
And no, not very fair. It's tough at the top.
Not my business persuading him anywhere - he's got a briefing in a bit. After that I don't suppose anyone would mind him carting as much work as he can carry home on his bike. He'd have to talk to the DCI. Depends how much he's got done, I suppose.
Good on you for giving it a go but you're probably best avoiding annoying him any further :-)
He's lucky to have you keeping an eye on him Sally. I hope work hasn't been too difficult without him around.
Anony
L, before you say anything--please don't get angry with Sally or Anony or me. I promise we do not think you incapable of taking care of yourself, or that you don't know when you have to stop. This is about not being able to sit down and do/say nothing when we see someone we care about hurting or ill, that's all.
Sally, Anony is right, he's lucky to have you looking out for him.
I'm nosey and I like to ask questions of people who know what's going on, thats all I've been doing. I can't think our favourite DI can get annoyed at people for collecting evidence about people we care about.
He knows he's lucky to have Sally around so he won't be cross about anyone saying that either.
(I say all this with very little confidence that I am right but the sure knowledge that he really does prefer that people care about him than that they don't)
Anony
Thanks DW!
Bad work situation (mostly for other people not me) that even anonymous as I am I probably shouldn't talk about.
Just feel bad for people and I can't help.
Lancs. Anon
I freely admit I've been sticking my nose in--but I have not (yet) begun to fuss. :)
CR - I'm so sorry about your cat, though glad at least that it wasn't painful for her.
CR - so sorry to hear about your cat :-(
DW - mine's a Guinness...
Alright, drinks orders so far:
Lestrade, whiskey
Doc, pint of.bitter (?)
Nameless, Guiness
SH, Ent-draught
Lancs. Anon, Thwaites
CR, Krusovice (?). Svarak(?)
RR, can you tell the difference between Arur Haman and baruch Mordecai? if so, more wine?
Any others?
Ha! Good one, DW--but that's tomorrow. Today is a fast day, so I've a totally different reason for being vague on the difference. :)
An ice cold Fosters would be nice DW
Anony
DW - svarak is mulled wine. Gimme Bernard (beer) or Slivovice ;-)
(BTW, Krusovice is a mark of beer as well)
