This is a very brief post to say that L is as amazing as you all suspected. I don't think I've ever been so surprised, despite knowing there was some sort of trip coming, and so touched that he'd go to this much trouble.
Have just herded Sherlock and Mycroft down off the roof again, with some regret. Mycroft was lying down looking at the stars, and Sherlock was playing 'star songs' on his violin. A lovely image, but a bit screechy to the ears with other people trying to sleep.
We're all back in bed now. Goodnight, everyone.

What do you suppose the chances are that, being up (for who knows how long) at nearly 3:00am, Sherlock will sleep in a bit?
(I'm sure it was worth the awake time to them, either way. It must have felt a bit as though they had the whole universe to themselves.)

The image of Sherlock and mycroft stealing some brother time to look at the stars is very sweet I'm not surprised you had some regret about breaking it up but I'm sure that all the things that are planned for today, along with all the things that just happen because they can, will be worth having had to force them to get some sleep :-)

They were both wearing their life jackets, and I'm fairly sure Sherlock would care more about his violin going in than himself.
And we did moor away from other boats, so we don't get a bad rep!

It goes really slowly but John says that means we don't miss anything we want to see and we can stop when we want and the bikes are on the roof and I steered earlier and there are bridges you have to wind up with a special handle and locks!
Oh how I envy you. It has not been a good two days for me as the Project From Hell produces another fine flap that has had me working over 30 hours out of 48.
At least I might get my weekend free, as said project's chaos limit appears to have been reached and they've all collapsed in a heap.
It does mean I'll walk into an unholy mess on Monday, but sufficient unto the day the evil thereof.
I will spend the weekend waiting for the opportunity to make remarks about entering tunnels and shooting streams...
What's a shooting stream? Is it real shooting? I want to do that!
Have you managed a bike ride yet? I bet you can move quicker on your bikes than you do on the boat :-)

Sherlock--I've never heard the phrase "shooting streams", so Rider (or anyone else who knows!) should correct me if I'm wrong, but if it is the same as shooting rapids, it means to take a (small) boat over fast-moving, rock-filled water--people do that for sport.
I bet you lot are having more fun because your holiday is for days and days, not just a few hours! :)
For those outside the UK, where would one go to hire a canal boat for sailing?
And one of life's little gifts is sitting on a roof and watching the stars, so I'm glad the boys had the opportunity to do so, and had a little time with just the two of them.

No, if they did, it'd block the entire site. Must be an IP problem. Eh, seems to work from my laptop via public wireless just fine.
FWIW, I find all kinds of oddities in commenting from the mobile version of the site--no cut-and-paste, and if I stop an autocorrect or move the cursor, I have click "done" and re-start poking at the keyboard before it will let me continue, which is annoying on the captchas. Seems to be a universal blogspot thing.
If I try to reply from my phone I can't select the "comment as" function, so it's a waste of time.
Someone should write a strongly worded letter of complaint for them to ignore...
My phone works fine with it. Apart from putting words in that I don't want...
I don't think I've ever seen John so relaxed. Or the boys so... getting along, and happy.

It can be quite helpful for sibling relations when there are more interesting things to do than fight. When we were 8 and 12 I used to fight with my brother constantly, but I can remember taking a long weekend at the shore that fall and it was like we were best friends. Or maybe I just don't remember the fighting. But I do remember that weekend quite well and I remember doing things with him then that we never would have done at home. Nothing really even, just taking a walk and talking about life kinds of stuff.
So many warm feelings and smiles going on here :-)
I'm glad Mycroft and Sherlock are getting on well it must be a strange for them being apart a lot. You can't get much closer together than a holiday on a canal boat though ;-)

I think it's helping that we're constantly moving, so there's new things and people all the time to distract them.

We haven't had to use it yet but I want to! And there's a hook and a life ring and loads of ropes and spikes and a big mallet and we used some of that last night to moor and I want to hit a spike in and we're going to stop tonight somewhere we can cycle to a pub Lestrade says.
You're certainly learning a lot about boats, Sherlock! Let's hope you have occasion to use the gangplank at some point. (To get ashore, not to drown someone, though! :) ) And maybe Lestrade or John could help you hit a spike in the next time you need to do that. And cycling to a pub sounds like a really fun thing to do for this evening!

I know that you are only mean in one very small way but I really am a presents on your birthday kind of a girl but then I don't usually get weekends away on canal boats with the people I love most in the world so I guess presents probably mean far less against that backdrop :-)

Bike ride was good, we'll go again in the morning, there was a bakery and we could do with stuff for sandwiches.

I'm glad it's been good with Mycroft and Sherlock but I know what it's like to have fun with short people without your other half it's not quite the same however good it is is it?
I miss Mycroft when he's at school, (not that we see him much here, which is good if he doesn't want to be here) so I can only imagine how much you must all miss him.
