the tennis

Well...Federer's in the final. I wasn't expecting that, to be honest, even though I put him down to win the whole thing in our tennis pool. I thought he'd go out to Rafa in the semis. Now that there's a chance he might actually win the whole thing, I'm bizarrely nervous. I've also done something to my back and may end up watching the final from a prone position on the sofa while avoiding any sudden movements.

I've been at the allotment a lot (that and the back may be related), and things are coming along surprisingly well. Sherlock wants us to plant watermelons, but I think it's too late (?) and also given the planting instructions, they might well take up the entire allotment. Space 6-8 feet apart! Still, maybe next year. Fruit seems to be our downfall (blueberry bush shows no sign that it might ever consider producing anything except leaves).

Mycroft is doing well in his new job, to no one's surprise. We went for a visit and Sherlock did not consume their entire supply of ice cream, although he is now convinced that, having got it once for free, he will get free ice cream there forever. Presumably even when he's grown. I tried to pay for it this time, but the woman who runs the shop thinks he's 'precious and a very polite young man' and since he actually is very polite with her, I didn't want to press the issue.

In other news, Murray's seeing someone, and she's apparently tennis mad. They went and camped in the queue for tickets. Murray said it was a lot like the Army but with less nudity and more swearing. Not sure if he was serious or not. He sent me pictures, one of court 18 and part of his finger and one of someone who had a Federthemed umbrella:

I live in fear of you whipping that out next time it rains...

Can you train Maf to do that kneading thing she does on your back? Or just walk up and down on you a lot?

I might be even later than planned. There may be...action.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think she's happy to walk all over me...

Is action good? Does that mean it might be drawing to a close?

Greg Lestrade said...

Good that it might be over, yes. Just depends what happens. It might be a bit of a false start, if nothing...useful happens.

John H. D. Watson said...

Good luck, whatever happens.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks. Is there any cheese left, or did Sherlock miss me so much he was forced to eat it all?

John H. D. Watson said...

With greAt effort Mycroft and I saved you some.

Greg Lestrade said...

What shall I compensate myself with when he's having his sleepover on the boat? A large gin?

Looks like things are indeed happening. I ... seem to be going on a date with another man. For justice. Sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sounds about right.

Seems odd to say good luck with that, but...I hope you get the desired outcome?

Sally said...

We've got his back, John.

Sally said...

I am absolutely not telling him the Dutch have gone through though.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know you do, Sally. Thanks. Tell him to call me when it's over? If he has time.

Sally said...

As if I have to tell him!

John H. D. Watson said...

Well...you know. Just in case.

Anon Without A Name said...

I seem to have missed the whole of Wimbledon - I was amazed to realise it was the final weekend this weekend. Mind you, half my friends seem to be focussing entirely on the cycling at the moment.

John,I hope your back's OK, and that it's just a bit of muscle strain that's easily sorted.

Lestrade - be safe.

Sally said...

Seems to be going well so far. Although I hope this isn't the sort of chat up lines he used on you.

John H. D. Watson said...

He implied I was a murder suspect and then asked me out for coffee a bit later. I don't suppose that would work in this case...

John H. D. Watson said...

Nameless - thanks, I have a small cat acting as a heating pad.

Sally said...

No coffee and implying he knows what this guy's done would give the game away a bit.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure.

Sally said...

You still around, John?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, why?

Sally said...

Don't worry, but...I might need to deliver the boss back to you.

John H. D. Watson said...

What happened?

Sally said...

He's just talking to the paramedics. We think something was slipped in his drink. He's...not making a whole lot of sense. Got the guy though.

John H. D. Watson said...

God. Well thank goodness you got him. Is Greg all right? I mean...obviously he's not great, but...?

Sally said...

We don't know what it was yet, we're trying to get the guy to tell us. We had people watching for this, and no one saw anything. The boss just started acting funny. The police doc might make him go to hospital. Shame it's not you. He's conscious.

John H. D. Watson said...

Tell me if he ends up going to hospital, please, and I'll meet him there. I think between Mycroft, Mrs H, and Anthea, I can leave Sherlock for a bit.

Sally said...

Can I send a car for you? He doesn't want to go to hospital, but he really isn't making much sense and I'm pretty sure he's hallucinating although he swears hes not. you might be good for him.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, of course. Thanks, Sally.

Sally said...

Someone's on the way.

They're just taking bloods from him for evidence and he might have to pee in a pot if he can, then as far as I'm concerned he can go wherever's best. I'll leave that up to you to decide.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right. See you soon.

Anon Without A Name said...

Hope everything's OK with Lestrade.

Sally said...

He's...well, he's won a fight with an oxygen mask, and wrapped himself in a blanket. Including his head. He won't talk to me. I just can't believe it happened, we knew it was a danger, we had him covered.

Lancs. Anon said...

Hope everything's OK. Bad people can be so good at doing these things otherwise they wouldn't get away with it I suppose

Sally said...

John's in the ambulance talking to him.

Anonymous said...

On the plus side, Lestrade's bodily fluids must be providing primo evidence. One hopes. Also, that the presence of his private Doc will calm his mind till he can ride out whatever it is.

Wishing all the best to everyone. And that John's strained back isn't hurt trying to haul his loopy loved one up the stairs.

Becca said...

Poor Greg. I'm sure you were all watching closely, just as I'm sure this guy has practice making his moves. What's important is that he's being looked after by his personal doc.

Anon Without A Name said...

Thanks for the update, Sally. I'm sure your team did everything they could have done - which is how his unusual behaviour was spotted, and action taken.

Sally said...

I've sent them home, with a couple of burly constables to save John's back. But I think John will go all Hulk at the first sign of the Boss needing him.

Why anyone does these drugs for fun is beyond me. that didn't look like fun.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's still not fun. I'm very glad you got the man who did this.

You're kind to update us Sally, given that you must be busy. Thanks.

Becca said...

Ugh, yes, every time I have to take narcotics I marvel that anyone does them for fun.

REReader said...

You and me both, Becca. I find the idea that people find that preferable to the way they normally feel quite sobering.

I hope whatever it is washes out of L's system quickly and with no lasting ill effects, and that you don't have anything alarming or difficult to cope with, John.

Greg Lestrade said...

Anonymous said...

Sadly, I come down a little farther on the side of substance abuse. My control needs are too high for hallucinogens, and I can take or leave stimulants (other than coffee), but my limited experience with both prescription and non-prescriptions downers is that I love 'em. Since I have serious family history of alcoholism, I imagine it's partially genetic.

I've never experienced a confluence of events that put me in the soup - I'm pretty law-abiding & (knock wood) pretty healthy. And I've gotten through enough life shit without succumbing to alcohol that I'm pretty sure my self-monitoring will keep me out of that trouble.

But I had to weigh in for the other side. I totally understand how people with bigger challenges or worse coping skills than I've ever had slide into drug abuse and addiction. There but for the grace of God (or stupid good luck).

pandabob said...

Flipping heck Greg, I'm glad you're ok.

I hope you're ok John and the boys.

Greg Lestrade said...

I feel like I've been hit by a truck. John and Mycroft are trying to ensure I don't lift a finger...Sherlock wants every detail.

Every credit to my colleagues who got me out of a bad situation, because I was in serious trouble.

Joolz said...

Wow, sorry you've had to go through all that, Greg, but the good part is that at least you caught the guy and that surely means the op is over so once you recover from this you won't have to feel uncomfortable about that any more.

Well done Sally and everyone for looking after you and make the most of having your Doc and the boys there to help. If Sherlock does get even the barest details of what you've been through with this drug reaction it'll hopefully keep him off ever doing anything similar when he's older so that's good, though I know he's too sensible for that anyway.

Have a restful day, Greg, and I hope you feel better soon.

pandabob said...

I'm glad your boys are looking after you Greg but I'm sorry it's necessary although a day of resting does give you the opportunity to watch John watch tennis ;-)

I hope you got everything sorted last night Sally and that you and rest of the people involved are getting some rest today as well :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks. I'm not sure how I can describe it. I couldn't move. And it felt like my body was melting and stretching. Seemed like it took days for anything that happened. When John arrived I couldn't get to him, I was fighting like...trees, and bands of light, in a forest and I couldn't reach him. Although he says I was just staring at him. So...anyway, Sal says they're about 90% sure it was Ketamine. Waiting for the lab to confirm.

Sherlock said...

he didn't even eat the cheese I left for him because he wasn't feeling well. Mycroft says we can go to the park later if John and Lestrade need to sleep more.

REReader said...

I'm sure Lestrade will appreciate the cheese being left for him when he's feeling better. And that's very good of Mycroft, I'm sure you'll have fun!

Mycroft said...

It would seem sensible to empty the house of Sherlocks and dogs. Leaving only Lestrade and John, who both look rather grey this morning, and Maftet, who is a professional sleeping expert.

Anon Without A Name said...

That was very thoughtful of you Sherlock, leaving some cheese for Lestrade.

John, Lestrade, I hope you get the time and space you need today; sounds like Mycroft is already on top of making that happen (as a family unit, you know, you're all so incredibly supportive of each other, it's a lovely thing to witness).

Sally - I hope you and your team are also having a restful day after what must have been a pretty painful (if successful) night all round.

REReader said...

You don't need me to point out how thoughtful that is, so I won't. Instead I'll say that I'm sure both Sherlock and the dogs will enjoy the chance to run around--and Sherlock will undoubtedly enjoy having you to himself for a while.

Small Hobbit said...

Just catching up on last night's activities. J & L, hope you manage to get some rest and feel better later, a nasty thing to have to go through. And Mycroft I hope you don't get worn out in the process of occupying Sherlock, who no doubt has sufficient energy for all of you.

Greg Lestrade said...

John has furnished us with drinks, snacks, pillows, cat toys and treats (for Maf, not for us). I believe this is a sign he's settling in for the long haul with the tennis.

I'm still being an uncoordinated liability.

The boys have gone to the park, armed with dog toys, dogs, money for ice cream and Anthea. Not money for anthea, just Anthea.

And now I've sat here for 5 minutes trying to work out if Anthea is her name. My mind is completely wrecked today.

Mrs Hudson has offered baking distractions when they get back.

Anonymous said...

Anthea is, indeed, her name (at least, the name we know her by. I suppose it's probably not her actual name).

Glad you're....okay-ish, Lestrade (and everyone else). That sounds scary. This is where the English expression "bloody hell" seems eminently appropriate. I had to tend to a friend who I think was drugged once (who just drops drugs into a random person's drink in a bar and then wanders away?) and it was profoundly un-fun for both of us, even if most of what she did was sleep.

I dunno if you were able to get the criminal for what you were originally hoping...but at least you got him for all these other things.

Glad you're recovering, Greg. "Disassociative psychedelic" is what I'ver heard ketamine described as. Doesn't sound remotely like something to take for entertainment.

Yeah, RR. My control needs are too high. I love being sedated - but not if things stop making sense.

L, to me having a drug play tricks with my brain is giving up too much control. I'm very unhappy with anesthesthia, even.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well it plays a lot of tricks. And is an anaesthetic for horses. So...I couldn't recommend it to you for a good time.

Piplover - I am feeling better, but still clumsy and forgetful. I can't say watching John watching this tennis is quiet or calm though!

John H. D. Watson said...

Sorry. I am actually going to die before this is over.

I can't help but think that on-court interviews just minutes after winning/losing are a bad idea. They do it in rugby, sometimes football, too. Just seems a bit cruel.

Hope throwing yourself onto the sofa hasn't done your back any further injury, John. And that Maf deigns to forgive you... soonish.

Unlucky Federicorn, would have been nice if he'd won. Thanks for organising the tennis, Becca, it was good fun even if my picks ended pretty early.

The sooner Murray's new romantic interest has a chance to like him for (rather than despite) his approach to life, the better. Besides, you all have Mycroft to make you look respectable.

Besides, you all have Mycroft to make you look respectable.

Ha, fA, so true! :D

(I suspect the word "compensation" will feature somewhere in Sherlock's weekend tales....)

1. holy cow. L, glad you had a good team backing you up, and a few days off to recover. But yikes, that was a closer call than we'd like to see. I'm firmly in the no-thank-you camp when it comes to drugs. Unless there's a really good reason, like surgery!
2. nice that Sherlock and Mycroft got some one-on-one time together, brothers need that. :)
3. I say the sooner Murray's new gf meets you guys the better, if she can't handle you all then he shouldn't waste a lot more time on her. And if she IS a keeper, then, it'll be that much more fun!
4. instead of tennis and soccer/football, I've been busy this weekend with yard work and dancing out. What a treat to have had two perfect days, after rainy Thursday and Friday. The thunderstorm some of us got nearly caught out in on Thursday night was exactly like being in a car wash, though. That was exciting, and now my car is all sparkly clean.

I think you're all making the mistake John did last night. Mycroft won't make us look respectable. In fact, if he stood next to her Maj I imagine she'd come off looking a little shabby!

Hmm. You're thinking of the contrast. If you look at it that way, an afternoon of the whole gang might make Murray's company look downright soothing in contrast.

Ah well. Anyone who's a keeper would soon figure out that you're good people and frequently highly entertaining. Good value, as it were.

Is the ship this week, how brilliant, I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time, Sherlock and John. Maybe you should make your own secret plans with Mycroft, Greg and you can have just as much fun. ;)

How are you feeling today, Greg, have you been able to talk through some of that weirdness you went through with John.
How's the back, John, has your husband given you a massage to surpass even Maf's ability to walk all over you.

Thanks for the entries for the footy, we just have 4 left please - Sally, Z, mag and Desert Wanderer.

Greg Lestrade said...

Bit better, thanks. I wrote a little about it on my blog.

I tried to give John a massage - not quite so clumsy today! But as soon as I get my hands on him Maf does want to join in - she wants to insert herself between us, so I'm stroking her and she's sitting on John.
