Carla and Paul sent me this...
Amazing, isn't it? Greg insists it's a fake (the picture as well as the moustache, which is clearly fake). I've put it up on the fridge to point at every time he comments on my moustache, which is not nearly that bad. And it's nearly over! I'll shave at the end of the month. The way he goes on about it, you'd think I intended to keep it forever.
Sherlock, incidentally, wants to keep it forever - or at least long enough to do some sort of experiment on. With trepidation, I've said he can and said no to having him use tape or wax to rip it off all at once and maintain the shape. So I'll be shaving into a box...or something. And then keeping a very close eye on him.
People at work have been very good about donating, but I do get a lot of comments like "Can I pay to get it removed sooner?" and honestly, you'd think it was some sort of massive wobbly caterpillar eternally crawling across my upper lip. I told L that last night and he looked at me with such horror it made the whole month worthwhile.

At least I shall save money on buying Christmas presents this year. Those two are both off the list.
Ha. But they did such a good job!
I'm amazed they refrained from adding a leather cap and some aviators.
I'll see what I can do...
If I could have paid for you to remove yours, I would have. Anything that hides your lovely face is wrong.
And it makes you look stern.
You should BOTH have grown them then I could have measured them and seen who grows it faster and it would have been interesting.
Maybe you can persuade them to do that next year, Sherlock. (It really would have been interesting!)
not a hope, shortstuff. Especially after John's hilarity over this picture.
You can grow your own when you're old enough.
So, John, if Lestrade's 'tache would make him the leather guy from the Village People, does "massive wobbly caterpillar" make you Ron Jeremy?
Maybe I could shave it sooner than planned after all...
Jesus, Nameless! Here's a guy trying to enjoy three days off with his husband and now I'll have to go and sleep on the sofa, cuddling Maf as clearly I can't leave an innocent pussy around John Jeremy...
Nameless you are cruel. Unless the attempt was to point out how extremely much better John HAS to look than any incarnation of Mr. Jeremy from any era.
I am pretty much anti-facial hair myself. I've seen it look nice, but my preference, or prejudice if you will, is strong.
All y'all have a nice night.
fA
My work here is done...
:-{D
cruel.
when can I do this? how old do I have to be?
http://youtu.be/xQ_IQS3VKjA
*very tiny eep*
*ahem*
(I'm not good with heights, and it's hard to watch a video with a hand over your eyes.)
I'd think you'd have to be at least as old as the number of years it takes to be expert at climbing and off-road biking--and old enough to be able to build up enough muscle mass to be physically able to do all that carrying. At a guess, early to mid-twenties. (There's a reason that most male athletes aren't world class younger than that.)
You have to be old enough that I can't watch you and John can't follow you down...
That looks like something you should tell people you've done once you're home safe rather than putting them through the panic of knowing you're going to do it Sherlock but it does look quite fun :-D
That looks amazing...
exactly why my age-limits applied. I couldn't watch either of you do that.
We could walk parts of it, couldn't we? The parts with a trail didn't look too bad.
Walking would be fine.
Even if I was forced to do it on a bike, I imagine I'd survive (prefer a trials bike, though...for the coming down, not the carrying up!)... but I wouldn't want to watch anyone I cared about do it! At least if they've put the video on Youtube you know the guy probably didn't plunge to an untimely death!
Probably...
well, you know, there's stuff on YouTube no right minded person would ever want to see.
That guy is nuts. All it'd take is one stone in the wrong place at the wrong moment. I know there's a risk to anything in life, but I'm in the "not doing it and don't make me watch anyone I love do it" camp.
Of course, two acquaintances have been killed hiking and climbing, and one good friend survived (with lasting injuries) a rock climbing accident that both his doctor and the paramedics said they'd have expected to have killed him. Two of the three were doing things that were considered 'experienced family group' level and were both experienced and safety conscious. (Mind you, this is over the course of 35 years, I'm not the Typhoid Mary of hikers, honest.)
Yup. Buzzkill, that's me.
fA
Well, it's what he does for a living, and, like racing drivers/bike racers, i assume his family are at peace with what he does as far as they can be.
A life without risk is a life half lived :-D
I hope the day is being good to you all :-)
The world would be a poorer place if we all thought and felt alike, that's for sure.
We have beautiful sunshine here. It's a glorious day! Maybe I'll run/jog outside for a change.
fA
Morning all.
Well our town's lights were switched on last night so I guess that makes it official. We'll have to have a drive through tonight to get in the mood. ;) Someone told me yours have been on a while already.
Hope everyone has a great day. :)
They have indeed.
We have something more important to celebrate though... Mycroft is back this weekend so we can go out to dinner and celebrate all having known each other for a scarily long time!
So you'll be celebrating Thanksgiving after all! ;)
Time flies when you're having fun :-D I'm glad you have plans to celebrate and that Mycroft's going to be home for the weekend :-)
Thank you for that photo. I shall stick it over his official one in the board.
And I'm glad when he remembers your anniversaries. Because it would be weird that he remembers all the lyrics to the new Dolly Parton song and not anything important. Although it's quite weird he remembers them anyway.
Sally, do I get the impresion there are some things you would rather he didn't remember?
DS Donovan's contributions are always appreciated!
4 years. Amazing. Almost half of Sherlock's life - astonishing! And Mycroft's gone from a boy to a young man. Our time perception is so odd - so relative to context - when you think about it. Or maybe that's my post-root-canal painkillers talking.
(When they aren't putting nasal twang ahead of harmonies I've been liking The Pistol Annies, if you like female country singers in general, not just the deservedly esteemed Dolly.)
fA
RR- you've got it right!
fA
Dolly Parton has a new song out? Oh, I do look forward to popping home.
It's these little things that make you grateful for family...
Don't diss Dolly!
And yes, she does. It's hardly a great feat of memory to know all the words though...much as I love Dolly, it's not exactly a lyrical masterpiece!
See you tomorrow, Mycroft.
Courage, Mycroft!
Now I want to know which song. "Home," "Try," and "Lay Your Hands on Me" are the three I've heard most since the last album was released. I can easily imagine L. singing "Home." "Lay Your Hands on Me" is a gospel re-write of an '80s Bon Jovi song, so it's not that much of a leap. "Try" is giving my imagination trouble, especially the idea of him singing it at work.
Or maybe none of the above?
(It occurs to me that I know rather more about Dolly Parton than I would have thought I do . . .)
fA
Blue Smoke is the latest that's getting a lot of air play here. They play it about five times a day, and like I said, it's not lyrically challenging! So easy to pick up. And sing.
wow, that video is... wow. yeah, old enough to have the training, for sure. wow.
reminds me a bit of the stories three of my morris lads told after one of the trips to England, when they went hiking up... in the Lake district I think? or as far up as Scotland? I always forget these details. But one of those knife-edge ridge trails when if you fell off either side you'd be a goner. it's one of those things I *love* hearing them tell the story of, but I would not really have wanted to be there! :D
S
Mycroft. Encourage L. to sing. It's an eminently singable song.
I like Ms. Parton, and between the faux-train-chugging rhythm track and Ms. Parton's stage show intro to the bluegrass section, I think even I'd find the song annoying as recorded after hearing it too many times.
fA
Mycroft came home, insisted that he and Sherlock would make pizza for themselves tonight, and John and I should have a date night.
John, on discovering how freezing cold I was from being outside all day, insisted on warming me up in bed before we went out :) (just shared body heat, no shenanigans!)
I took John and the small rodent currently resident on his top lip out for a slap up dinner and a bottle of plonk.
It's very nice. We are currently debating dessert wine.
what a lovely way to spend your evening Greg and what a great plan Mycroft :-)
What a wonderful surprise, well done Mycroft. That's an amazing set of brothers you have there to entertain themselves and give you a night out for your anniversary. Plus you get to do it all over again tomorrow as a foursome to double the pleasure and prove what a fortuitous meeting it was all those years ago. :) [Can you get a drunk and disorderly for being in charge of an intoxicated rodent. ;) ]
Have a lovely weekend all of you. :)
Mycroft, you're a prince. And Sherlock as well, for being a compliant participant/co-conspirator.
Hope you had that dessert wine!
Entering the weekend of prepping for the mix of visitors, visiting, traditional or defiantly anti-traditional food that is American Thanksgiving this Thursday. Working two days next week and off three, no travelling for me. Lots of old favorite tunes to clean and to cook by. Sweet!
fA
Joolz - you can indeed get a D&D, and threatening an officer with a vicious attack-rodent ;)
Well..it's wet. But we shall make the most of the day.
so what've you been up to then? wet celebrations are sometimes better than dry ones depending on the plans of course ;-)
I hope you've all had fun together.
We went to the new gallery at the science museum, had lunch out, then came home and cooked a frankly gigantic dinner, which I am now lying on the sofa, digesting, covered in John, Maf and john's moustache.
Presumably you all settled down to enjoy Match Of The Day?
To quote John: "Hush."
SH - got to take my opportunities where I can - they're few and far between these days :-p
*hushes*
sodding pissing rain.
Do you have to be out in it?
John, did you see that your man Federer just won the Davis Cup for the Swiss?
No, we wanted to be out, but it's been relentless.
I did, Becca! Very happy right now:)
yes...not all of us were sad to be stuck indoors.... more sad when a huge dog sat in front of the telly.
Hi all. I didn't realize it had been so long since I checked in. I hope all are well. I'm...tired, at the moment. It's been a long week.
Ella
It's cold today. And John sent me a picture of Sherlock's hair rejecting his woolly hat. The hat was sort of perching on top of all his curls. Either a chinstrap or a haircut is required.
And i need a scarf for the bike - frosty mornings equal cold knees and a cold chin (and no, growing a beard is not the answer)
I feel that Sherlock agrees with his hair about the hat. ;) (I go with a hood-and-earmuffs combo, myself.)
Scarf won't help the knees...leg warmers? (And now I've totally dated myself!)
I'm not sure the makers of hats have much thought for the size of heads, I can't seem to find any that actually stay where you put them!
You could get yourself a gunners scarf if you're brave enough to wear it outside ;-)
I've never seen leg warmers over the knee... But cold knees is a fact of biking life until it gets truly cold enough to go up a grade in gear.
And i have a nice silk scarf - just need to remember to wear it!
By the way, it's counter terrorism awareness week, it's being shoved down our throats here, so can you all try to be a bit more aware, make it look like we're doing a good job of passing it on ;)
On my bike (of the pedaling variety), it's cold thighs. I don't know if I've ever noticed my knees being specifically cold.
Ella
I definitely notice cold knees, even just walking--because 1) Over 50, and they're joints, and 2) Skirts. :) (So fashion or no fashion, my leg warmers go over the knees!)
L, I'm never not aware. I'm the annoying person who calls security when someone accidentally leaves a bag or package behind, because what it it's on purpose?
That is the whole point of the campaign, apparently - persuading people it isn't 'annoying' to report things.
Despite the number of bombs London has had explode, people would rather risk it and not delay everyone by reporting it. You wouldn't believe the sort of stuff that ends up in lost property with no one reporting it between being lost and found by staff at the end of the day.
It's a bit embarrassing to be a squeaky wheel, but, what if? So I do.
(I once really embarrassed a lawyer who started walking away from his briefcase--in a criminal courthouse, what was he thinking?!)
well...we try not to embarrass people.
And I'm the sort of person who gets phonecalls from on-high asking if I can just 'pop and see if that white powder/that suspicious package is anything we should call anyone out for.', So...well, I prefer it when it's someone's holiday clothes, or an innocent powder, but I also like it if it doesn't happen too often!
When son was driving a local bus someone told him there was an abondoned rucksack (it was a rural route). He peered at the contents - someone's mum was not going to be happy that they'd left their gym kit on the bus.
I didn't mean to embarrass the lawyer! I didn't know who'd left it. I just pointed out the briefcase sitting in the elevator without a person to the nearest security guard, and then the lawyer came rushing back for it. (I was pretty embarrassed myself--but after all, they wouldn't even let us bring cell phones into the courthouse because there were some Very Important trials going on at the time.)
L., are were you really too young to remember the thigh to ankle knit leg warmers that were all the rage in the '80s? Or were they called something else in the U.K.? Trendy with dancers and on workout videos, as well as teen girls.
fA
I don't remember thigh-ankle, just lower-leg. Below the knee to somewhere slouched around the feet, and yes, they were a huge 'thing', and returned a few years ago for another bite of the fashion cherry - teenagers all over the place wearing neon leg and arm warmers as if they'd just invented fashion.
I think leg warmers were somewhat more likely to be worn down around the lower legs as fashion statements and (even now) somewhat more likely to be worn pulled up over the knee by dancers, who are more concerned with keeping their muscles and joints warm while they stand around waiting for choreographers to get an idea than with how their legs look. (If that sentence made sense!)
Guess I lived somewhere where the wannabe dancer look reigned. (Well, I know I did.) It is interesting how fashion recycles & how it is tweaked on each go round!
fA
The legwarmers I don't mind so much, and sometimes they're sort of cute. But I'm really, really glad the 'cut-up sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder' isn't making a comeback. Or big hair.
fA, I always wore legwarmers so as to cover my knees, for warmth.
OMG, Kestrel, big hair! I had a perm back then, but I don't think I can be held responsible--it WAS the 80s.
Hope you didn't forget your scarf today, Greg, it's a wee bit nippy out there. :)
Hope you manage to get Sherlock's hat down as far as you can to keep him warm, John. :)
Have a good day everyone :)
RR- you are not responsible for you '80s hair. Obviously. Because I am not responsible for my '80s fashion choices. (Legwarmers were not among them, but soooo many other dubious choices were.)
fA
It was all totally the decade's responsibility, fA--hair, clothes, music, all of it!
I don't think anyone was responsible for their fashion choices in the 80s. They just... sort of happened. It was the decade that ate people's taste.
ITA, pip.
if you were only listening to bad 80s music, you were listening to the wrong music! No one to blame but yourselves.
Fashion was dubious, but a lesson I hope we've all learnt from.
Joolz - I didn't, nice warm chin/neck this morning.
I was mostly into classical music in the '80s--I went out of the century entirely!
Greg covered my comment on '80s music. There was a lot of crap, but some of my favorite albums from my favorite bands came out of the '80s. So I can't eschew the decade entirely.
(I'm still barely a tourist of classical music. There's just not enough time in day!)
fA
I love watching Professional Masterchef... but Sherlock is now demanding cuttlefish and sweetbreads....
My mom used to make sweetbreads. (She stopped when it turned out I was the only one who'd eat them. :))
I've heard of using cuttlefish ink to make pasta, and seen it dried in shreds in international groceries, but I have no idea where I'd look for the fresh (or frozen?) fish itself. I'm guessing you could find it in a city as large as London, if you were so inclined. Let us know if Sherlock's plans are executed.
fA
Got one of those low level headaches that can't decide whether to be bad enough for drugs or just go away on its own.
And I'm counting down the days to December... Getting a kiss from a husband with a moustache filled with cold condensation from being outside is...not nearly as pleasant as a nice bare-faced kiss.
I hope the headache has slunk off by now. (I make no comments about mustaches....)
Oh no, headaches are horrid :-( I hope it clears or that it gives you enough excuse for drugs soon :-)
We appear to be counting down to the advent count down to Christmas! It's scary how well kids can count when they want to ;-)
Just back from the library, and reports of snow in New York are somewhat misstating the case. What we have is a lot of rain and a lot of sleet, with periods of white stuff added to the mix. Blech.
OTOH, I'm REALLY glad I'm not trying to travel somewhere for Thanksgiving in this--it's slippery to walk, driving has to be worse and I'm sure they're canceling an awful lot of flights. If anyone is traveling in the NE US today, stay safe!
Hope the headache realised it wasn't welcome and went away of its own accord.
No, the headache decided it would try to turn into a migraine, so the drugs were brought out.
Who else gets weirdly hot behind their ears when the migraine's starting? I think the rest of my symptoms are quite normal, but no one else I know gets that.
I hope the drugs were effective.
No hot behind the ears, but my throat gets tight, like I've been yelling.
Hope the drugs are doing their job.
All my sympathy to you on the moustache issue, L. Not being a fan of facial hair in most cases. I'll even be happy when the current blog post moves off of the picture of the excessively moustachioed Lestrade? It's jarring.
Safe travels to anyone trekking for the holiday in the U.S. May your family tables be as stress and conflict free as possible. I'm glad I'm spending my holiday with my chosen friends & kids, not my birth family & their friends. That'd be a tough one this year.
fA
yeah, it's not a pretty sight, is it!
But, in contrast to the pictures John normally posts, that it my usual expression. I spend about 99% of the time frowning.
Getting heavy wet snow here, and several inches of it. I shoveled a bit during the day and it was like whipped buttercream, heavy and sticky. I'm only going a short way tomorrow, which is good. But I'm really crossing my fingers for good weather on my travel dates coming up in January, when I'm going to Minnesota. I have never flown in the winter before, so this should be interesting.
S
S- I don't think I've heard snow compared to buttercream frosting before. Sounds miserable.
L.- You can't possibly be frowning anywhere near 99% of the time. The math doesn't work. When John or the boys mention you, it is too often to say that you are being silly, or teasing, or laughing or playing about.
fA
Considering the ratio of number of photos posted I don't believe that at all, Greg. ;)
Hope your migraine has gone today.
Very jealous of those with snow, they should send it over here shouldn't they, Sherlock, all we've got is miserable rain.
Happy Thanksgiving to those who do & Happy Thursday to those who don't. :)
Something I think my husband should read:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-30046426
Although I fear it will the opposite effect to the one I desire...
The coast to coast marathon sounds good too... ;)
Hope you noted the addictiveness and the divorce, too!!
Happy thanksgiving, those of you celebrating.
I did. I actually thought they must've got divorced when I got to the part where he went back and did it again several more times.
And yes, happy thanksgiving to anyone who's doing that today :)
Sherlock would also insist you share your bat juicing technique with him.
I would prefer to juice something less cute if possible.
If you choose more populated run routes, you can stick to juicing plant life...just a thought!
Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating that, and happy Thursday everyone else! (You can always overeat in solidarity... ;))
To be honest the thing i thought would put you off most is the description of how busy the route is now.
Ha, you know me too well. 1300 people! That's why I mentioned the coast to coast one ;)
On a more realistic note, do you want to walk along Hadrian's Wall some time? We could take the boys if they want to come. I'm sure the dogs would love it.
Blokes less certain of their good looks and general charisma than I am might feel like their husband was desperate to get lost in a desert ...
Hadrian's wall would be great.
Never. Don't worry, I think I've got more sense than to try to run across an entire desert these days. Probably.
Well, if you did ever want to, I'd support you as best I could.
I know you would, love. Thank you.
