We'll have Mycroft and Anthea and the slobber twins (that's unfair, they don't actually slobber that much) home this Saturday for a good long while. We're thinking of going up to walk along some of Hadrian's Wall, although perhaps with more B&Bs than camping. Sherlock says it's not that cold, and he's right, it's not that cold, but he's young and has bones made of rubber (medical fact, trust me, I'm a doctor) that won't set up immovably from sleeping in the cold on the ground. Also he doesn't care about the availability of beer and warm food, whereas L and I care a great deal.
So there's that. L's head is much better, thanks everyone for your concern. I did my best to keep him in one place for five minutes and get him to rest a bit. Or, as he puts it, chained him to the sofa and weighed him down with a cat. She does get amazingly heavy when she doesn't want you to move, but the dogs would've been more effective. Next time...
Mycroft sent us a photo the other day of Anthea dressed all in black with the hounds on either side of her in an early morning mist. It's no wonder she makes all the boys there a bit nervous. It's probably good for them (and I feel fairly certain she enjoys it). I'm trying to save her some of L's dragon biscuits, but it's hard going. By which I mean I really want to eat them. He could probably make more, right?
Things have been mostly quiet, but at work a few days ago I did end up treating bite wounds in someone's house who had a massive salt water fish tank and an octopus named Dog who supposedly once ate a severed finger. I never got the full story, but I can only assume that the people who live in that house lead far more exciting lives than we do - I knew there had to be someone out there who did. And you see, Sherlock? This is why (among so many other reasons) we can't have an enormous aquarium the size of a small room. I don't want an octopus eating my severed finger.

Don't worry about the camping -it's going to be your birthday trip, so it's your choice about the comfort and beer-availability at any sleeping-spots, that's a fact.
I was quite still, for some quite long periods...i swear you train that cat though. Which is supposed to be impossible.
Don't have to train her to enjoy lying on warm soft surfaces, that comes built in ;)
So sorry, big tough inspector, right. It's hard to remember when you're pinned down by a small fluffy cat.
a, she's getting bigger. and b.I've always been told it's rude to grab a lady by the scruff of her neck and throw her on the floor
Is that why you were wearing her like a scarf?
I think you'll find she's wearing me...
I don't want an octopus eating my severed finger.
Or a curious degu...
Walking parts of Hadrian's Wall sounds like an excellent holiday--especially with staying in B&B's. (Sorry, Sherlock, I'm even older than John and Lestrade and even with t'ai chi don't have rubber bones.) (Although I could theoretically break someone else's bones! ;))
How lovely to have the rest of your household back at the weekend & a fun holiday to plan. :) I'm sure you'll have a brilliant time even in b&b's.
So was the bite injury from a dog or the Dog? ;)
we should go straight on holiday and not worry about staying for my school because I bet I could catch up anyway.
Stupid thing posted twice somehow, sorry. :)
it was 1.5 degrees up here this morning so it really isn't camping weather especially not for southerners who find themselves 'up norf' ;-)
I'm glad you're feeling better Greg and I'm glad you have such an 'interesting' job to tell us about John :-)
you seem to have missed the word 'soft' out of your comment, Anonybob ;)
I wouldn't be so brave as to use that word Greg ;-)
I'm sure you'd have no trouble catching up any work you missed Sherlock but holidays wouldn't be as much fun if you didn't have to do the school thing in between :-)
Ah give over, you're brave enough for anything, Anony!
Sherlock is busy planning our trip. John may be relenting and allowing one night of camping............yes.
There are some pretty places to camp along the wall so I'm told so I hope Sherlock finds somewhere nice for your one night :-)
Good luck with your assessment today, Greg, hope you'll soon be staple free. If you're really lucky maybe they'll insist you take the weekend and go back on Monday then you can enjoy Mycroft's first few days at home altogether.
Are your plans nearly ready, Sherlock, I bet you've got some great things organised already plus one night of camping too by the sounds of it so it should be great fun.
Have a great day everyone. :)
Well, it's getting gloomy but no chance of seeing the sun from here. We're at the school, trying to keep some sort of order in the playground. Hope others are having more luck.
Hiking the Wall sounds like a fantastic holiday. I would vote on the side of only enough camping to enhance appreciation of heated accommodations - say, zero to one nights.
A couple of nights of wine and good food considerably improved my just-concluded trip, which was otherwise house painting and house cleaning and belonging sorting and worrying about health insurance coverage all on behalf of friends or family. But in good company.
Glad recovery's proceeding well, L. And good for you, going to see your mum. We can't change others, more's the pity sometimes, all we can do is let them know we'll give them a chance if they want to change themselves.
fA
Ella - hope you are feeling better. Don't push too hard when you do, relapsing is no fun either.
fA
P.S. on behalf of your birthday trip, John, I bet you could get an entire batch of cookies made, time allowing.
fA
What a shame you had clouds down there. Did you get any kind of view at all. We were quite lucky & the clouds held back long enough for us to watch it looking through an old xray. (I'm not sure if the colon film we were using enhanced or hindered the experience though ;) )
How did your assessment go, Greg?
Happy Spring Solstice, everyone!
(It's snowing here. Of course.)
(Don't be jealous, Sherlock--it's going to be above freezing when it stops snowing, so it should all melt quickly.)
Joolz - got the all clear! Staples removed (to Sherlock's disappointment) and I was cleared to go back to work tomorrow, but I called in and the Chief Super told me they'd already done the rota without me so I may as well not go back in until Tuesday!
I'll have forgotten how to do the job soon. But I do get to spend the next few days with all my boys - brilliant :)
Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear it.
Have a great time, all of you!
ah, I see you did get your staples out today, good.
Hadrian's Wall sounds awesome, that is definitely a place I have day-dreamed about visiting.
S
Yeah, it should be good! We've done the traditional Mycroft - retrieval, and got my bike back from the yard! Pub lunch, with all my favourite people. Hope everyone else is having a nice weeked too.
Morning all. How lovely to be back together again with a couple more days off too, sounds like a perfect weekend. :) Plus you can even lie down properly now, Greg, as you're staple free. :)
Are you all off out & about today or a nice leisurely day at home (that's what I'm aiming for if I'm allowed. ;) Just took my two some breakfast in bed seeing as they did it for me last week so that was nice to see their surprise) ;)
Have a great day everyone. :)
It is gorgeous weather again today, so a lazy start followed by some allotment work. Big roast dinner tonight I think.
How goes the day gentlemen? Are you making the most of your last day off Greg?
Do you have any plans for Easter Mycroft?
I hope school is teaching you something interesting Sherlock :-)
Yeah, lovely day again. We've been to see some small bikes/scooters with Mycroft :)
Fun!
Did you see anything you like, Mycroft?
one of the many fun tasks we get to deal with...unexploded 1000lb bomb found in the city today! Builders are forever digging up bombs and skeletons.
O_O
happens quite frequently - you can't let it worry you! Most of this city is built on bombsites or plague burial sites.
bikes/scooters and bombs! that really is an exciting day ;-)
Does Mycroft have a vehicle in mind or was it just a browse?
We went to discuss a plan of what he'd like to learn with, then graduate up to. He can only get his AM licence at the moment, but when he's 17 he can get his A1, so it's all a balance of not spending lots of money but getting a good bike! And for him to do some window shopping for future rides ;)
Comparison shopping for a purchase like that can be so much fun.
(Has the call of the Bright-Eyed Younger Sibling been heard in the land? The one that goes "it'snotfaaaaaaiirrrrr"?)
fA
oh yes. 'it's not fair' 'that's a stupid bike' 'I'd get a better bike than that' etc. With the odd 'can I go on his bike?' thrown in
Bike shopping sounds awesome, and it's tough to not be able to do something when you have an older sibling who can!
I have bunged up my ankle while doing physical therapy for it. To the point where I kind of want to cry and am hoping I don't have to move my surgery up sooner. I think it'll be ok, but I want to throw it in a cast for a week or two to let it calm down, and I haven't heard back from my doctor yet.
Oh Becca, how frustrating! Hope your ankle recovers better than you expect and your doctor and/or physical therapist has useful thoughts/plans.
Being the younger sibling is hard - you get to do some things earlier than the older one(s), but it's hard to appreciate that when there's something you have to wait for.
fA
Did you manage to remember the way to work this morning Greg and could you find your desk under the paper mountain? ;-)
I hope you and Mycroft have something interesting planned for today John :-)
I did just about remember the way :)
Hope your first day back wasn't too dire, Greg, and you remembered what to do. ;) I'm sure Sally would have been full of helpful tips. Has she recovered from her injuries too.
Do you have to be a certain age to carry a passenger on a bike or will Sherlock be able to ride with Mycroft if he's good.
It wasn't too bad, no. Paperwork, catching up, the usual.
Sal's fine now, thanks.
Best of luck with the ankle, Becca!
Once you've passed your test you can carry pillion passengers, but I'd want Mycroft to really get his confidence up first.
Thoughts going out to everyone with family and friends involved in the crash in the Alps. And the police officers guarding the crash site tonight. Must be a fairly macabre place to be.
its an awful thing Greg :-(
There is something quite scary about the idea of Mycroft and Sherlock having total control over their destination even when it's a bike ride away ;-)
Do you go back to open cases Lestrade or does someone deal with everything while you're off and u start with new stuff?
Bit of both! There are some cases open from when i left still. Hell, there are some cases open since I got the job! We don't solve them all... And a few new ones will drop onto my desk now i'm back too.
It's kind of weird to think that cases remain open so long Greg but I guess without a conviction they have to.
How went the day? Did it treat you all ok?
When do you finish for Easter Sherlock? We have another week to do but my nieces finish this Friday which isn't going down well with my kids ;-)
Yeah, sadly there are a few kicking around that happened before I even joined up. But we still review them periodically to check there's no new evidence we could get as technology advances.
Sherlock finishes next week on Thursday too.
I bet he's really looking forward to that!
When do you all leave on your holiday? Have you got your trip mapped out?
Our itinerary is in the hands of Sherlock, with a final sign off by John...
Good luck with that John, I suspect that the trip will be amazing even after Sherlock has been talked down from his original ideas to something more achievable ;-)
I hope the day is interesting enough for everyone :-)
Thinking about negotiating itineraries with Sherlock, it occurs to me that some weeks it must be mentally exhausting to be John. Sherlock's a lucky kid.
fA
Absolutely terrible news about the plane crash. The co-pilot's family must be devestated - as of course, will all the families of the other victims.
AnonyBob, here's an enquiry just like we were talking about yesterday
http://content.met.police.uk/Appeal/Detectives-appeal-for-help-to-solve-40yearold-murders/1400030662717/1257246745782
It's a horrible horrible thing the plane crash :-(
I hope someone has information on that case and all the other unsolved ones because it must be horrible not to know for so many years :-(
Yeah, you can't even imagine, can you? Especially when it's your kid. Still, we never close these cases. And sometimes we get lucky with DNA or something.
Not too long ago we got someone for an old case because his son was arrested and the DNA match was so close - but not 100% it told us that it must have been a very close relative of the son who did it.
I don't know how people live with it Greg but I guess they have no choice sometimes :-(
its good to know that technology and scientific progress is helping us get some cases solved, it gives hope to those people waiting I guess.
Thinking about negotiating itineraries with Sherlock, it occurs to me that some weeks it must be mentally exhausting to be John.
Fun, though! :)

It's good to think that sometimes improving science and technology can sometimes reach back in time and provide answers--I'm sure it's better than never knowing.
it's definitely not always fun. Wouldn't change either of the boys for anything, but I'm sure bringing up kids is never all fun! (if it is, someone tell me what we're doing wrong )
'Fun' takes on all sorts of meanings when referring to kids but someday just aren't fun at all!! other days are completely amazing though :-D
I didn't say ALWAYS fun. ;)
You're right it isn't always fun but if we're lucky the good far outweighs the bad and you wouldn't give any of it up for the world. :)
Have a great day everyone. :)
Sherlock has definitely learnt not to take rejections of his ideas so hard. An John is the master of compromise.
And he hid mini eggs in my bag again this morning, which will broghten up my afternoon doing papaerwork no end :)
We're going to stay in a wigwam and that's like camping but Lestrade says it's not as hard on old bones and we don't have to carry a tent either.
An excellent combination of all the best things--and it sounds like a lot of fun. When are you leaving?
Have a wonderful trip!
wigwams sound like a great plan Sherlock and much more fitting for the unpredictable weather that April brings around the wall :-)
Man, you guys know how to do camping right!
We're having Spring here at the moment - it doesn't last long between Too Cold for My Wimpy Self and many months of 78 F & climbing at 7 a.m. - so I'll be outside.
Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

A hypnotic website Mycroft found to occupy Sherlock this morning - MRI scans of fruit and veg...it's beautiful!
http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/mri-scans-produce-are-completely-amazing
The onion one and the garlic are weirdly amazing, Thanks for sharing Greg and thanks for finding it Mycroft :-)
Was Sherlock successfully hypnotised all day or has fun and madness been had?
the weather has been so filthy that baking and tidying the house has been the order of the day.
Or pretending to tidy your bedroom but actually lying in wait for a wayward adult to venture in and then leaping on them and taking them prisoner, for a ransom of biscuits...
Now that sounds like a brilliant idea, Sherlock, well planned. I hope you got plenty of biscuits out of it. Were these more of the infamous dragon biscuits or did you design something else this time?
I love Sherlock's plans :-D
Baking is a great way to spend a bad weather day :-)
Yeah, we wanted to go up the allotment, but it was too miserable. We did get some of the plants we ordered for our window boxes though! Have potted them and put them indoors for now, until they get a little bigger.
Did you know that on this day, 70 years ago, the last V2 bomb fell on London. I believe it killed one lady, in her house.
And for those of you wondering about the bomb found here last week - here's how it ended up:
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/mar/25/bermondsey-bomb-destroyed-controlled-explosion
How goes the day gentlemen?
I have a new found respect for you Sherlock, I'm really struggling with it's not fair itis today because everybody seems to be on school holiday and we're not! I hope school is teaching you something interesting :-)
the day has...gone, anyway.
I assume yours will at least get to have a week on holiday at the end when everyone else has gone back...will that help at all?
I'm glad its gone if it's been as good as that sounds Greg ;-)
We do have a week after the others are back which is some consolation but when school holidays are the only time we can travel to see family for any length of time it's still not fair that we're not on holiday at the same time ;-)
I hope you have a nice evening :-)
Happy birthday to the best husband a man could ever wish for! And I'm sorry, I lied, I'm not going to work, I'm staying with you ALL day
Happy birthday, John!! (I'd wish you a special day, but clearly that's already arranged. ;))
He was probably looking forward to a quiet day on the sofa, not being ambushed by some fun!
There are lots of other days for lazing of the sofa but there's only one birthday :-D
Have a great day John :-)
Ambushed by fun is the title of my upcoming autobiography. ;) love you, L.
Love you too. Young ' Un
Happy Birthday, John.
I'm sure you'll have a great day.
He has entrusted his life to me piloting a rowing boat...
...we may be kidnapped by swans. They're ganging up on us.
...Definitely having a special day!
Happy birthday, John! Sounds like you're having a great day so far! Although, being kidnapped by swans sounds like the name of a band.
Thanks everyone! Having a great day. :)
Happy birthday, John!
The swans have released us. Sherlock now has us hostage, with copious cakes... We were going to have birthday dinner but I'm stuffed!
I can still eat pizza
Happy Birthday, John
And pizza is very celebratory!
Happy Birthday, John! Wishing you a year of good health and good times.
"Ambushed by Fun" is actually a great title for an autobiography. Even greater when it's how you feel about your day!
fA
Happy (belated) birthday. John! Hope you had lots of fun - and not just of the ambushing kind.
