Lestrade got this one:
Which, as you can see, is red, and goes with my bike. Although, it's going to be L's bike for a while as soon as his hand is well enough to ride again. I don't really need it on a daily basis. I hope his gets fixed soon though. I know he misses it.
The accident, if it was an accident, was over so quickly that it's difficult to remember the details. It always seems odd that something that happens in so little time can have such lingering effects.

You are an incredibly kind man, and I don't deserve you one bit. (An incredibly kind man with a nice red shiny helmet, at that.)
And even if you don't need your bike on a daily basis, you should get out and enjoy it a bit now the boys are back at school. Getting the tube doesn't bother me.
I can enjoy it after yours is fixed. It won't be that long.
Might even be fixed before my hand is.
Got outpatients...or follow-up...or bloody walking-wounded appointment or whatever they call it these days tomorrow. Come to bed and tell me all the things I should say to get them to set me free from this splint.
And I'll tell you about the two men arrested when customs found they were smuggling primates in their underpants.
you're a kind man sharing your bike John :-)
I hope you're ok after the accident, you to Greg.
Anonybob
Which reminds me, I need to remove my son's helmet and topbox from on my daughter's bed for when she comes home this weekend! She may think it's a bedroom, but in reality it's a room for keeping bike bits.
primates in their underpants
...Really?
Also, bed sounds fantastic.
SH - we need a room for bike bits...school bits...experimental bits...and, well, bits.
Small primates it said they had, yeah.
Slender Lorises...Lori? Loris'? whatever. Better than the last one I heard about. He had Titis in his pants. How do you explain away titis in your pants?
There is no explanation for that.
C'mon, bed. I'd threaten to strip search you, but I can't even strip myself...
So I'll just have to trust you'd only ever have large primates, and they'd be easily...detectable.
I'm sure any primates in my pants will be obvious.
Love the red helmet John.
Is your poll working? I voted for hoodies and it didn't show up. So then I changed my vote to jumpers and it showed up as hoodies. Or maybe both votes are mine. Definitely hoodies though. Then when it gets cold you can put your hood up to stay warm.
I read that as 'any primates in my pants will be oblivious'.
C'mon, you haven;t yet told me one convincing line to feed the doc that does my MOT tomorrow. Anyone would think you just want me to tell the truth..
Kholly - I had to reload it a few times to get it register my vote (jumpers, obviously). I think Blogger's a little slow tonight.
L - now where would you get an idea like that?
(Why were they smuggling any primates at all? It hardly seems worthwhile compared to, say, diamonds.)
Hope your visit goes well tomorrow, L--even telling the truth! :)
you probably have some warped idea that healing is better for me than getting back on a motorbike.
you're quite wrong, of course. But I'll let you win not only because I love you, but also because I hold your medical credentials in very high regard.
I'm voting twice. Because hoodies for me, jumpers for you.
And I appreciate both those things. Come on, bed.
I wouldn't have minded seeing "both" in the poll, but I'm going to have to go with hoodies this time because I just got a new blue one and I'm very happy with it.
L, listen to your doctor. Hands are important and you want them to heal right. Because when they don't it really gets in the way sometimes.
rsf (Who is not even going to ask about primates in pants, nor admit to what mental image popped up first...)
Andy Murray just won the US Open. I could not be more pleased, or exhausted.
When I got home from my tai chi class and saw Murray won, my first thought was that you would be so happy about it, John! :)
Yes! Murray won, though it was a roller coaster of a match. I didn't get to watch the first two sets, but I heard there was some very fine tennis during them. The fifth set was also hard fought.
Still sort of stunned by Federer's performance in his last match -- really not his usual standard, but the open was still fun to watch. And Serena beat Azarenka, so that was also worthwhile. Lots of long matches all around.
ryo
That's my favorite thing about this blog. On any given night, we get discussion about various forms of protection, long matches, and things confined in underpants.
Yup, there was a very happy (and tired) Doc in the house this morning. Stumbling about and putting teabags in the coffee maker...but happy all the same.
Greg - As long as he doesn't add water with the teabags in the coffee maker! ^_^
John - I've almost put (powdered) creamer in my hot chocolate once before I realized that I wasn't drinking coffee that morning...
Have good days, gentlemen!
~A from NW
I voted hoodies, but it was close. Hoodies most of the year, but jumpers when it's really cold. My favourite jumper is a hooded one.
Hope your hand MOT goes well L. I'm sure the Doc will ensure that you don't interpret "getting better" as "I can do what I want with it".
don't worry, i'm a long way from doing what I want with it.
Appointment is later, so I'll see what they have to say.
until then, it's body parts in the morgue. Some days make you long for just one whole body to work with...
DW, thank you. Your observations always put a smile on my face. Especially when they are followed by mention of tired happy people.
John, I hope you can catch a nap while Sherlock is at school!
L, good luck with the appointment. And the body parts. I hope there's some point of information which will give you an insight into solving the case.
AfNW, I've put powdered creamer in my hot chocolate before, at least when I started with powdered hot chocolate mix. Sometimes it helps!
rsf (who thinks the second day back at work is worse than the first)
Things that still make you happy the next day are worth losing a few hours of sleep. :)
Some days make you long for just one whole body to work with...
There's a sentence I bet you never thought you'd be saying when you first took up policing...
I hope your doctor visit goes well, L!
(I voted for jumpers, because the hood of hoodies gets all bounced up and uncomfortable under a coat.)
(Bunched, not bounced! Stupid autocorrect.)
Waiting at the hospital. Having conversation in hushed tone regarding severed body parts.
No one is sitting near me now...
that's the way to get some space I guess ;-)
I hope it goes well for you and that Guitar playing is allowed even if bike riding's out for a few more days :-)
Not hushed enough, I guess... :D
Good luck!
I'm not optimistic about guitar playing, Anonybob, but I hope the verdict will at least good for pancake flipping and other less finger intensive activities.
rsf
I've been downgraded from splint to weird soft sponge thing and soft bandages. And I'm allowed to stretch and curl my fingers, but no squeezing or gripping yet, sadly...Danger, your bum is 50% less likely to he squeezed for another week or so.
Anything that means you can wiggle your fingers is a nice step up! (Not significantly less frustrating, but still a Good Thing.)
Best thing is I can get it all on and off without help, so can set myself free when I want to change or wash or get a vinyl glove on at a crime scene without having some else stop and help me.
That's a frustration or two fewer, so yay for that! (And for the fact that your hand is healing, of course. :))
I'll do my best to assist you with squeezing and gripping until it's healed.
You're a diamond, Danger.
Had a good day?
Pretty good, yeah. I rode the bike for a bit, since you're not up to gripping and squeezing yet. Oh, and Mrs Holmes called. I have an appointment with her tomorrow apparently. Should be interesting.
How are your body parts?
All still unclaimed/unidentified. Well, apart from the one which is almost certainly identified anyway - but that's not my case.
Mine are, tragically, still very much a mystery.
Did you have a nice ride? Where did you go - out of the city? And did Mrs H give any clues? Did she tell you to dress nicely for the meeting? I hope she isn't stealing you away somewhere...
Hey RSF, can you PM me on LJ? I have a very off topic question for you.
I'm sorry. That must be...intensely frustrating, at the very least, as well as sad.
I went to Oxford, had a bite to eat, and came back. Not that exciting, but good to get out for a while.
No clues from Mrs H. You know how she is. It could be anything. I hope it's something to do with those pictures, but I think she would've wanted you there too for that.
rode the bike 'a bit'? And went 100 miles? I'm really glad you're enjoying riding. And intensely jealous that you got to go.
Still, good practice for a few years time, when Mycroft wants to go to uni, right? :)
I hope it is too. Just tell her she's not to redeploy you without sending me too.
Two things come to mind, John: 1) I heard a rumor that there's a birthday coming up, and 2) Maybe she has another puzzle/job for you--you did awfully well with the last one, after all!
L - didn't seem much point in just going to Tesco. Although I did that as well. What do you do with white asparagus?
RR - not sure I did much at all with the last one, apart from be there at the right time.
Being in the right place--and doing the right things--at the right time is pretty much the definition of doing well, isn't it? :)
Eat it.
If it is some case, try not to attract any unwanted attention of the violent sort, please?
(okay, now I'm worried... don't just eat it. Peel it, cook it, then eat it.)
Maybe Mrs H means to give you a raise, John. Although I suspect the meeting has more to do with the boys and lessons and things.
I didn't know there even was white asparagus ten minutes ago and now I want to try some...
rsf
Ha. I wouldn't have know to peel it. I'll wait till you get home to do anything with it though.
And whatever she has in mind, I'll do my best not to get myself injured.
Also, congratulatory tweet from Orkney Library to Andy Murray...
https://twitter.com/OrkneyLibrary/status/245436219218083840
Ha!
I'm certain this isn't what Mummy wants to talk to you about, John, but I did tell her I'm planning to take some of my exams early, at the end of this year.
My tutors are all happy that I'm capable of doing so. It will mean I can cover more subjects, and to a higher standard.
I hope your hand is feeling better, Lestrade.
I'm glad the accident didn't put you off riding, John.
Congratulations, Mycroft, that's really very impressive!
Hey, well done, Mycroft! And I'm supposing it's not woodwork or something simple...
Are there other boys doing the same?
Hand is much better. The new thing is a bit like holding a sponge in your palm. Just stops me doing 'anything stupid' as the doc put it...
Mycroft - that's great! I'm sure you'll do brilliantly. What are you taking?
I don't think there's much that could put me off riding, really. I think you're quite sensible to insist on riding with L though.
Lestrade, yes, some other boys are also taking exams early.
John, I've decided to do Latin or Greek and Astronomy.
Will you then continue on to a higher level with same subject Mycroft or are you going to start something else or a bit of both? You don't set yourself easier challenges do you ;-) no doubt you'll do well with them though.
John how are you doing after your late night tennis watching and your lovely long ride? I gave up at 1230 and went to bed and I'm glad I did really I'd never have managed to be up in the morning had I waited for the end!
I'm glad your into a soft splint Greg, every step towards being fixed is a good thing
I hope your'e all having a relaxing evening :-)
Bloody hell, Mycroft. DOn't come to me needing help with your homework :)
I'm sure you'll do fantastically. Just let us know if there's anything we can do to help. Anywhere you need to go, or whatever, when you're here.
AnonyBob - now I'm home I've taken it off. I'm currently practising 'splaying' and 'bending'. Almost an expert, by now...
The more 'splaying' and 'bending' you do the quicker you'll get better I'm sure ;-)
I'm glad it's getting better I hope it's properly fixed soon :-)
AnonyBob - Indeed. splaying and bending are both things I'm almost expert in. Thanks. It does feel better. Just looking forward to being able to grip and squeeze again now!
Anony, when I had to do hand therapy, I was under strict orders not to overdo the exercises, which was frustrating.
Mycroft, I'm glad you have the option to test early! Gives you more time for new subjects.
rsf
I'd do chemistry and explosions and Mycroft do you know where we're going for my birthday because Lestrade keeps saying that they're planning something when I ask and I looked through all the history on BOTH their laptops and there's NOTHING.
Well, Sherlock, I suppose you could just congratulate them on their improving computer skills! :)
Histories can be cleared you know.
it is very important to be able to grip and squeeze things Greg you are right, at least you have one hand so you don't have to miss out altogether ;-)
Is it your birthday soon Sherlock? how did I not know that? ;-)
Anonymous they only know how to do simple stuff and there's loads of history still there and nothing about my birthday and YES Pandabob it's soon REALLY SOON and I want a cake with sparklers on it.
Hmm, Sherlock, I'm not sure it's considered polite to check someone else's browser history.
When exactly is REALLY SOON? Do you have a countdown on the web this year again?
Mycroft - I'm impressed!
Lestrade - so you can do some stretching and curling and splaying and bending? Just not gripping and squeezing? Hmmm.
Hah, yeah, we know how to do simple stuff like... not search for things you want to know about on our computers that you have access to! And don't snoop through the histories again. There are things there which are not for young eyes. And anyway, it's rude. So behave, or your birthday will be a very unexciting stay at home.
September 21--have I got that right, Sherlock?
What kind of cake do you want? Or is is cake ice cream that you're hoping for?
I only looked a bit and didn't click on anything that didn't look like it might be for me and most of your searches are boring.
AND YES THE 21ST and I'M SEVEN. I've put a countdown on the fridge and written it really big on Mrs Hudson's flower calendar downstairs AND on the wall at school and we all did that and it's a Friday so we should go on holiday all weekend and the next week too.
Seven is quite a substantial age, 'tis true.
I'm in favor of big, blowout birthday celebrations, myself. So--just like you--I always remind people when it's coming. I mean, I wouldn't want anyone to be embarrassed because they forgot or anything! It's just polite. :)
(The whole next week is probably not on because of everyone having school and work and just having had a gorgeous holiday, but all weekend shouldn't be impossible! I hope you get that.)
Sherlock - there will be cake. Beyond that, I'm afraid I can't say...
Mycroft - I'm so proud of you.
That is soon Sherlock :-) seven is very grown up but not grown up enough to be up at this time I wouldn't think so I hope you sleep well :-)
He is in bed. Possibly plotting breaking into the Yard and going through the browser history on every computer in there.
Danger - I'm proud of you. The things you've done for these boys is making them into the successful, rounded, wonderful young men they are.
L - love you. It's you as much as me, and them too. A joint effort really. :)
Ryo - yeah, the fifth set was amazing. I only saw the third and fourth. I meant to record it and watch it today, but I woke up, so I thought I might as well see if they were still playing. They certainly were!
Maybe there will be dancing....
Spider dancing! With very bright clothes!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-nmeYirsvA
(the spider bit starts at about 30 secs in but enjoy the scenery first...)
Mycroft, I'm really quite jealous that you can do those exams. I did a Latin course with the Open University a few years ago and it was probably the most interesting course I did with the OU, it made a real difference to my use of English, although you may not be able to tell that it did!
Sherlock, I'm with you I love birthdays! I went to a birthday party at weekend and it took all day to persuade the birthday girl to open her presents, I suspect that won't be the case with you!
Lestrade, glad you're splint-less now!
John, I'm pleased the accident hasn't put you off riding, I suppose it's getting back on the horse.
Lancs. Anon
That is a great spider. And extremely fuzzy.
(And re: the tennis, I meant the fourth and fifth sets, not third and fourth. Typing too fast.)
I love that spider. Throwing shapes like a pro there.
Yeah, I guessed you'd gone to watch the tennis when I woke to an empty bed and the barely-stifled groans and yips of excitement floating through from the sitting room... And then your uncontainable excitement when getting back into bed...
Sorry, I did try not to wake you...
really don't mind. The excitment was coming off you in waves when you got back into bed. I love seeing you happy.
Enough to watch the fifth set with me at some point? :) I did record it, after all...
yeah, enough for that.
Not like there's anything more interesting I can do with myself! Unless you want to learn some chords on the guitar so I can just strum...
I could try. I think those two things could be usefully combined.
Ha. To be honest, I'm trying to learn a new song at the moment. Or was, anyway. So it won't help me much if I'm not playing. Anyway, you'll keep jumping up and cheering down my ear :)
yes, distinctly furry spider.
When I was a kid we had a Huntsman come and live in the bathroom. A large (even for a Huntsman) and hairy spider.
I point out that a bathroom is a silly place for a hairy spider, it looked so damp and bedraggled after someone had a shower!
It finally decided that bathrooms just weren't right and decamped to the hallway where it hung about on the bookshelves and occasionally taking up most of the dial on the rotary (I am old..) phone.
My sister objected to spiders on phones so Mum removed it to her desk where it made a home in the whatnot tray and ate mozzies and sivlerfish as payment of rent.
I can only imagine the lengths we'd have to go to to stop Sherlock keeping some sort of menagerie in his room if we had such interesting insects/spiders/wildlife around here.
you finger while I strum!! really gentlemen you make guitar playing sound far more interesting than I've ever heard it before ;)
HM
I deleted the bit I wrote about fingering for exactly that reason... I can assure you if the doc were fingering whilst I strummed the tennis would not be getting any of my attention.
Rider, what are mozzies?
And L, I am just glad I was in the break room when I read your last comment. My co-worker attributed my blush to my supper!

Wow, Sherlock, your birthday is the day after mine! Although I got some of my presents today, so that was cool. I'm turning monstrously, hideously old though, while you still have your youth.
-Oregon Anon
Why did you get presents already? I want presents now too!
Well you, kiddo, will have to wait.
Lestrade look! Why couldn't we get salad with a frog in this woman didn't sound like she wanted it and I'd have been really happy to get a frog instead of salad! Can we shop at Waitrose and hope there's another one?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-19555898
Well, it is unfair she had a frog and don't want it, but I'm pretty sure the chances of finding another are very low. And please don't dismantle any shop displays looking inside every bag if you go shopping with John later. He won't be pleased if you do. And with your birthday coming up, you want to make sure everyone is as impressed as they possibly can be with your behaviour.
What amazed me was that she didn't notice she had a frog in her salad. And that she kept it in the fridge for a second night.
It was pretty well camouflaged.
Danger, how'd the meeting with the boss go?
I feel like I'm in a somplete sea of despair here.
case(s) not going well Greg?
Changes to police pensions mean a lot of officers feeling seriously under appreciated, on top of a summer with no leave, extra shifts, extra duties, and now some plan to recruit higher ranks from outside the force... Lot of people realising their future plans are having to change, retirement isn't oing to work out. Lot of anger, general feelings of extreme resentment, really.
Apart from that..yeah, the cases aren't going that well either! All joy this end
That sucks :-( The police are taking more than their fair share of messing with!
Us real people who can do nothing about any of it appreciate the job you do though if that is any consolation to anyone.
sorry the day's rubbish I hope John has good news from the boss and that brightens your day a little.
I honestly have not been able to understand how the courts here ( and I presume in the UK as well) have not judged the reductions and eliminations of pensions as contract violations. It's plain outrageous.
I'm sorry, love. That does sound bad. Do you want to get lunch or something? Or just coffe if you don't have more time?
The meeting with Mrs H was fine. She just wanted me to deliver something for her.
is there going to be another child for you to look after John? ;)
HM
Ha, not that sort of something! I don't know if I could manage another one.
You say that and make it sound so simple. I bet any delivery for her isn't a simple thing tjpugh....
Well...from what she said, I think it had the potential to be not simple, but it went all right.
Do you think we could come to some arrangement where you let me know if you're going to do something potentially-not-simple and where you might be doing it? Given even the simplest things in our lives, like bouncy castles and lunch have managed to become very complex recently?
Yeah, of course. Sorry.
Aha, deliver as in courier! Glad it went smoothly.
Thanks.
Sorry, no time for coffee.
I'll be late home. Probably too late for dinner.
All right. Thanks for letting me know.
What's being done to the police force at the moment in this country is pathetically ridiculous. I love the idea that somehow lay people know better how to do a job than people with experience, we should so do it with surgeons if it works so well for teachers and police.
Sorry everything's so miserable for you at the moment Lestrade.
Lancs. Anon
Yeah, stunning bit of policy.
And thanks. Not everything though. Still got a fantastic boyfriend and two brilliant boys.
That's the main thing I guess! Hope you manage home sooner than you're expecting.
Lancs. Anon
Lestrade - I think all public sector workers are feeling unloved at the moment, but the police have it particularly bad :-(
ReRe - I'm not sure about the police, but what they've done other parts of the public sector is not necessarily change the rules, but changes the various numbers within those rules. And, where necessary, changed the law. You don't need to break the law if you can change it. But there's talk of large-scale mass action (co-ordinate strikes) later this year and early next year. I don't know if it will make things better or worse...
John - Delivering mysterious packages on behalf of International Woman Of Mystery? I feel slightly nervous on your behalf :-p
Nameless - think I made L a bit nervous too. I suppose I wasn't really thinking, just got it done.
Wasn't exactly nervous, as I didn't know you'd done it until you had and were fine. I'm sure Mrs H wouldn't risk losing you.
