blame nicky

Honestly, it's not my fault. She sent it to me, and what else was I supposed to do? The earring really makes that look, I think.

... I'm not even really making fun. He looked better than I did in the 80s.

The past two nights of calls out haven't been so good, as you may have gathered. There were kids involved. Obviously, I knew that would happen eventually, but it's not really something you can prepare for. I've talked to L about it a fair amount and a bit to Dr Feelgood, Who said you never get used to it, which was about what I expected.

Nicky sent me this picture at  an opportune moment. It cheered me right up. As has the prospect of camping! This has been such a busy summer, it's hard to believe it's almost over. Hard also to believe how much is still happening before the end of it, before Mycroft and Sherlock go back to school. Camping, new clothes for both boys, but especially for Mycroft who is growing at an alarming rate, and, of course, the wedding.

I'm still thinking about the Marathon des Sables and looked into the London Marathon for next year, only to find that it currently already closed for entries. Exactly how early do people decide they're going to do these things? Anyway, I suppose there's nothing stopping me from running a ridiculous distance on my own without signing up for anything.

That...

Nicky, hope your hotel room for the wedding is refundable?

That earring was real gold. I was incredibly proud.

By this time next year, Mycroft will be towering over me, I think.

And...I'd probably rather you did a marathon with lots of people? I mean, where there's...you know, help, and medical stuff, and people handing out water, all that. At least for the first one. But...I know you can look after yourself, so ...

Did you pack? Or make cornflake cakes?

Nicky said...

You compared John to a drugged looking red panda! This is entirely fair revenge. Don't start wars if you're not prepared for the consequences, Gregorio.

John, good luck if you decide to enter some sort of tortuous sporting event.

Can't wait to see you both.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - you look good! Of course, being in love with you, I might not be the most objective observer…

We have packed and made cornflake cakes! We're prepared for any eventuality. Or at least any eventuality that requires camping gear and cornflake cakes.

.I'd probably rather you did a marathon with lots of people?

Don't worry. I probably won't do it anyway.

Nicky - thanks, for the luck and for the picture. :)

would you fancy doing a bike ride? Like the London-Brighton, Capital-Coast, that one that was the other day - 100 mile one? I feel like my body probably wouldn't completely give up on me, doing that. I'm fairly sure a marathon would somehow end the useful life of my lungs or knees...

I would not describe my look as 'good'. Although now I do want to see you in the 80s...

John H. D. Watson said...

I would really like that, yeah. It'd be great to do it together. :)

Me in the 80s was a lot like me now, except pudgier and somehow perpetually grubby, usually with mismatched socks.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha! Well mismatched socks I wouldn't mind - and I was definitely grubbier in the 80s, living in tiny crappy bedsits with shared bathrooms and only going to the laundrette once in a blue moon :)

I'm fairly sure I'd've loved you in the 80s. Except that you'd probably want to be studying and doing serious things with your life, not spending the entire time in the pub... I'd have been a horrible influence upon your career.

There's some things I hope no one ever gets used to.

Camping is not among them. I hope you have a wonderful time, and that the cornflake cakes last long enough to make it to the campsite.

Most of the people who run the Marathon here in Boston work up to it with a couple of 5Ks first. In fact, you have to have done some running just to be eligible. Is it like that in London too?

John H. D. Watson said...

RSF - probably, I haven't really looked into it seriously, just glanced at their website.

L - I have no idea how I would've reacted to you… Probably confusion that you even wanted to talk to me. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I think there's...a difference. I would, tentatively, say that I am used to cases involving kids now. But it will never get any better. I'm just better at dealing with it, and that, sadly, has come from experience.

Danger - you'd probably have thought I was a cocky idiot. Because I was.

And now I'm worrying that my seminar will be intensely boring. I can't even think of a title that will lull people into thinking it won't be :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Don't believe you. Maybe a bit on the surface but that's all. My parents would've hated you though, which I would've found ideal.

You could just blatantly make something up that has nothing to do with the material… Exploding cows and the constables who love them?

Greg Lestrade said...

...have you been on the herbal tea again?

Oh, speaking of which, Mrs Hudson grabbed me on the way out. She's going to keep an eye on the allotment when we're camping. Apparently Reg has promised to drop by with any produce that needs using for her.

Think we should tell her it's okay to bring a plus one to the wedding? ;)

I think inducing parental hatred was my special skill. Even on my own parents.

John H. D. Watson said...

Just the cornflake cakes, I swear...

I fully expect her to have a selection of gentleman to choose from for the wedding... I hope Reg matches her hat!

Mine love you now, if it's any comfort. In a restrained way, obviously.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is. A bit. As long as you do, I'm fairly okay with other generations not being so keen ;)

I'm drowning in a sea of acronyms. I should just put up a cheat sheet of them all, no one will remember what they are as I speak otherwise.

John H. D. Watson said...

I definitely do.

Such as?

Greg Lestrade said...

AIRE, ECJP, EAW, NGO, LEAP (FTI), OSCE, UN, ECHR, CECAATHB, EEA, EU, EJN... to start with.

Greg Lestrade said...

Doesn't help that I keep calling the EJN MJN, which is entirely your fault.

John H. D. Watson said...

It looks like you're saying something in another language.

John H. D. Watson said...

I keep calling the EJN MJN

Ha! I'm very proud.

Greg Lestrade said...

Then I move on to OCTA, ROCTA, OCTA-WA, TE-SAT, EAS, ICT, AWF, JITs (which are like MITs), CATS, MS, NMS, ECDC, OLAF, EMCDDA, CPOL, EC, and ECB.

See? No one will remember anything. I barely remember anything. I use some of these acronyms and don't actually remember what they stand for - I just know what they do!

It's nice having time on a nightshift to do this...but it does send me to sleep a bit.

John H. D. Watson said...

The only one of those I'm going to remember is CATS.

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't remember what UFED stands for...I just know it gets all the data out of a mobile phone. See...none of those letters are things my brain tells me should be to do with mobile phones.

Anyway, someone has kindly found a body, so I'm off to look at it. Hope you can get some sleep - might be your last for a while! Especially if there are exploding cows on our campsite... But call me if you want if you can't.

John H. D. Watson said...

U FED up with mobile phones. There you go.

Thanks, love. I hope works goes well for you.

Greg Lestrade said...

ta. Will unless I have to creep up on someone. Currently have hiccups for the FOURTH time tonight.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'd say you need someone to creep up on you, but...no.

Greg Lestrade said...

only you're allowed to creep up on me.

Someone certainly crept up on this poor bloke. Someone long gone.

John H. D. Watson said...

Just as glad he's long gone, though I hope you can find him of course.

Greg Lestrade said...

well, I think he is.

And someone else will hopefully find him, while we're off in the wilds, getting back to nature!

John H. D. Watson said...

That would be even better.

Greg Lestrade said...

Home. Sherlock of course wants to leave RIGHT NOW. But I'm going to enjoy my last few hours sleeping in a real bed ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

And we're off. Although I'll probably fall asleep again in the car!

pandabob said...

as long as you're not driving I'm sure that will be fine Greg ;-)

Have a great trip all of you :-D

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, I'm not! Sherlock will certainly be hoping Danger has lead in his boots though - he can't wait to get there! He's already planning things to do (despite being told NOTHING will be happening until our tent is pitched, everything is stored, and we're all set for our stay.)

Sherlock said...

But there are BEES if we were bees then we would definitely check out all everywhere first before putting our tent up.

Greg Lestrade said...

If we were bees with the Internet we'd google it all first, as we have done, and put up our tent first, I assure you.

And if we lit a campfire and got smoky we'd eat all our supplies at once and go all sleepy... So lucky we're not bees, eh?

rsf said...

Bees don't have a pre-planned destination, and they can't carry much of anything along with them. They have to check out the places they think they might stop to ensure that they have all the resources they'll need. I'd rather be people and be pretty sure I'll have shelter if I need it.

Will you be watching for the Perseids tonight? I'm going to haul myself out of bed at 2 in the morning and hope I can find a patch of dark down by the harbor.

REReader said...

Are you all there and set up and all? Have the best time, guys!

Greg Lestrade said...

yes, set up, and yes, as long as the cloud doesn't stop us, we'll be watching the Perseids!

REReader said...

Yay! I hope the clouds head away in time. :)

Sherlock said...

We can get milk straight from a cow and they sell bacon and eggs and we can buy it and eat it and there's a river and we bought our bikes and we're going to cycle in the forest one day or maybe more.

REReader said...

It sounds like everything you need for a wonderful holiday is right there!

Kestrel337 said...

Does milk straight from the cow taste different from store-bought milk? I've heard that it's much better but haven't ever had the opportunity to try it.

It sounds like a great trip; lots of exploration, fresh air, good food, and the people you love best.

John H. D. Watson said...

Someone told me it's 'chunky'. I'm not sure how eager I am to find out what they meant...

Greg Lestrade said...

...I worry about what they were drinking if they think it's chunky!

Kestrel - it separates quickly, so you can get a nice layer of cream :) and it's very weird drinking when its still warm... but otherwise, I don't know, yeah, just creamier. Depends on the cow, too! :)

Anonymous said...

I never drank it warm, but I miss drawing off milk for our own use from the tank in the barn, and I miss skimming the cream myself. It really oughtn't be chunky!

I can get raw milk at a local farm now, but after 22 years of pasteurized I don't really feel like drinking it raw. But I love making butter and yogurt from really fresh local milk so maybe I'll do that.

Have an excellent camping trip! I have to go back to work tomorrow, ugh.
