Work could've gone better.

Came home to find L on the sofa, cuddling his guitar, which was nice. I got him into bed and then watched a documentary on the Marathon des Sables. It's 150 miles over the course of six days through the Sahara Desert. I'd be mad to even think about it, right? I suppose I just need to think about something right now. Or go to sleep. That's probably the better option.

That's 25 miles a day for six days? Yes. You are mad. That sounds worse than creating the world.

I am sorry that work was bad enough that thinking about doing a six day footrace/test of sufficiency in the Sahara sounds better than thinking about work. Although, I can see the appeal in a lot of ways, too.

I hope you get some restful sleep, and that your family is a comfort to you when you are ready for comforting.

I'm not a runner, and there's no way I would ever be able to make it through the first hours, let alone the whole course... But, wow, that looks amazing, and I think it would be an incredible experience.

Tina said...

Hope you feel better this morning, John! And running through the Sahara? No, thanks...

Anon Without A Name said...

Sorry to hear that work was difficult last night.

A friend of mine completed the MDS this year, even finished in the top 50. Mind you, he's a mad bastard too :-)

Did L enjoy his hatted spider tattoo this morning?

Small Hobbit said...

Hope you managed to get some sleep last night J.

Have you established that it is a bowler hat that the spider is wearing?

Greg Lestrade said...

I think it's supposed to be a motorbike helmet perched on its head/body.

We've left John in bed. And all gone for a run. Literally everyone, apart from one security, Mrs Hudson and the degus. Anthea, security, me, Mycroft, Sherlick and dogs!

ro said...

That's quite a crowd! Who's the fastest?

Greg Lestrade said...

Anthea. She looks like a film star with an entourage.

REReader said...

Or your own little marathon!

I hope you're feeling better about work now, John.

Piplover said...

Hope you were able to get some sleep, John, and that today is a bit better.

Your run this morning sounds like a lot of fun, L! Was Sherlock able to keep up with everyone?

Greg Lestrade said...

Right, Sherlock has gone downstairs, with the promise of making really purple icing...

Want a brew and a chat, Danger? And a cuddle? (from me and the dogs)

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks, everyone.

L - not sure you, me, and both dogs will fit on any available piece of furniture, but I'd be happy to try.

Greg Lestrade said...

One of the dogs tried to sit on my legs yesterday. First paw that landed on my groin meant it was swiftly ejected.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock has returned with purple cake. And a purple tongue.

REReader said...

I love purple! A purple cake would be awesome. :) What flavor is it inside?

Better, John, I hope?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, a bit. As much as can be expected maybe.

REReader said...

Well, that's something. I don't suppose there's anything I can do to help, but if there is, you have only to say...

Unless...There's a new baby panda at the Taipei Zoo! There's pictures and videos at The Daily Mail website, and more videos (including one of her sucking her thumb over at the Taipei Zoo YouTube channel. Those pandas are born tiny!

Sherlock said...

It's orange cake and it's for John to make him happy because last night must have been bad because Lestrade said I'm not allowed to ask about it and he only says that when something is bad and John I can draw you a tattoo as well if you want but not a target I bet I could draw a good panda.

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks, RR.

Sherlock - what about a panda with a bowler hat?

REReader said...

You're a good, caring person, Sherlock. :) I'd think a purple orange cake should cheer anyone up!

Sherlock said...

I can definitely do a panda in a bowler hat but Lestrade's spider had a motorbike helmet on not a hat and Mycroft is stupid.

Can we get our tent out and put it up in the living room to make sure it hasn't been eaten by a moth or acid or anything?

John H. D. Watson said...

I remember, you explained. But I would definitely rather have a panda in a bowler.

Yes, but we will be taking it down afterwards. No camping in the living room tonight.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock, am allowed to take some cake with me to work? Or is it all to cheer John up?

Greg Lestrade said...

(I am leaving without cake!)

REReader said...

Maybe you can have some when you come home. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll survive - he said he, John and Mycroft needed it all. He did make it for John, afterall.

John H. D. Watson said...

There may or may not be some in your bag...

Greg Lestrade said...

What does it depend on? Whether he saw you put it in there? :)

Hope it does help, as much as cake can. I know it's hard. I wish there was more I could do.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can neither confirm nor deny.

Thanks, love. Just know you understand helps a lot.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's your cake, I think you should be allowed to give me some if you want ;)

Wish i could promise you won't see worse. But we can always talk. Always.

you got that tent up yet?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. Sherlock and both dogs are inside it, along with about 20 books.

pandabob said...

good luck at work Greg :-)

Sorry work was not good last night John, I'm glad you have each other to understand and to talk to when you need it :-)

I hope you all have a decent evening.

Kestrel337 said...

Our tent is also up, but it's in the yard with two kids and no dogs. I gained some serious cool points for knowing how to set it up. Was also depressed when they asked if it was 'vintage'. (Maybe)

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - forgot what I asked you and thought you meant they were all in the cake for a moment!

Kestrel - Sherlock asks us if everything is 'vintage' or 'antique' - including my phone, when I first met him. And my computer. Cheeky sod :)

AnonyBob - Ta! You too :)

Greg Lestrade said...

...and there goes my call. firearms op...got my vest!

John H. D. Watson said...

Good luck. Be careful.

pandabob said...

jeez that's an interesting start to your shift!!

Be careful/stay safe/good luck/ whatever the right thing to say is.

John H. D. Watson said...

...And I'm off as well. Hopefully I'll be back sooner than I was last night.

Sherlock said...

It's SO unfair! If you both end up in the same place you should definitely get Anthea to bring me too because that would be the best.

pandabob said...

good luck to you too John :-)

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh, blimey. Good luck both.

Sherlock - I doubt that either John or Lestrade are having any fun at all, honestly.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sorry, Sherlock. I don't think you'd enjoy it very much, to be honest.

REReader said...

Good luck and take care, John and L.

It doesn't sound like they'll be doing anything that you could have fun with, Sherlock.

Greg Lestrade said...

mainly v boring, SHerlock.

Good luck J

Mycroft said...

Sherlock is sulking in the tent. He has taken a glass of water and an orange in there with him, and declared he will never come out.

The dogs and I are having a small party in celebration.

Small Hobbit said...

Hope it all goes well for both of you. Not sure that is quite the right wording, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Greg Lestrade said...

glass of water and an orange? he'll last about ten mins!

I promise you, Sherlock, I'm currently leaning on a car roof, very bored. There is literally nothing happening apart from one crisis negotiator and one person talking.

Anon Without A Name said...

Mycroft - I know I shouldn't have, but I did just burst out laughing at that :-) Anyway, are you having a good holiday?

Sherlock said...

Have you got your camera you should have taken your bike or put it on your head or something that would be good I bet we can even make it send the picture right back to us so we can see.

Mrs Hudson says I have to go to bed and that John says I can't sleep in the tent and it's not fair.

Anon Without A Name said...

N'night Sherlock :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry kiddo, I don't have it with me.

Hope you're having a pleasant evening Mycroft.

And you, Danger.

I am done on this scene - all ended peacefully, and I get to take off my bronze hat :)

pandabob said...

well that's good news Greg :-)

Hope you're sleeping well Sherlock and that you're enjoying the peace Mycroft.

REReader said...

That's good to hear, L.

Greg Lestrade said...

Isn't it.

Now back in my office, writing my seminar, with coffee. Two mugs of coffee, in fact, because I got one, then someone brought me one. Perfect :)

Going way back up to the beginning of the comments...more than 50 people do the every year?? Like, there's a top 50 and then more people below them?

Mad, every last one of em.

John, I hope that whatever it is gets easier...whether that means changing external things if they can be changed or just finding comfort in L. Or, whatever you need, really, I hope you're finding it.

"More than 50 people do the Sahara marathon thing every year" is what my first paragraph is supposed to say. Typing skills, I have them!

John H. D. Watson said...

There's about 1000 who do it every year, if you can believe it (not the same 1000, I assume). I think finishing in the top 50 is considered very very good.

L - I'm done. Can I stop by and see you if you're not busy?

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah, course. I'm in the office. No guarantee I'll stay here ... but I'm here now :)

you can share some cake, if you want?

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks, love. I'll text you when I'm there.

Greg Lestrade said...

you okay? another hard call out?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not as bad as last night, but not great.

rsf said...

It may not be much of a comfort in the moment, but it's worth knowing that there are people like you both who are willing to face the mucky parts of life. The world would be a much harder place without you.

Anonymous said...

I'm thankful too. Also, I'm watching a big fluffy yellow service dog while I'm sitting here in the airport, so yay for animals that help, as well!

Thank you for the info about that lighthouse in Boston the other day, RSF! I've always meant to go camping on one of the Boston harbor island campgrounds. That lighthouse is never going to be one of them, it's a lighthouse on a rock just like Fastnet.

AftSO, waiting for the San Francisco fog to lift so she can fly home....
