14 seconds

L came up with this fact for me today: in Britain, an ambulance is called to someone suffering the effects of alcohol every 14 seconds. Between my training and now the FME work, I think I've seen at least half of them. I realise that's not remotely possible, but trust me, it feels like it.

Our allotment has tiny pumpkins. You could wear one as a very small hat, or perhaps carry one around in each hand if you wanted to look festive? I suppose you might, if you had very small hands, try to carve one, which is exactly what Sherlock wants to do, even though Reg has promised him one of his, which are a more reasonable size. (Obviously, he wants to carve that one, too. I think his end goal is to fill the flat with orange, staring faces so that one night, when one of us comes home late, there will be some sort of Pumpkin Incident.)

Mycroft is on an overnight trip with his astronomy group and so will be a day late coming home for half term - but then we've got him all week, which we're all looking forward to. We might try some more museum roulette. Mycroft said his friend had improved the app and added a few more museums. Should be a good time. I have no idea how this year is going so fast though. Currently trying not to think about it.

He would have fitted inside that massive one on the news - biggest ever or whatever it's claim to fame was. He could've carved it from inside.

I've no idea how it's going so fast either.

It's been a busy year! Shall we have Christmas the day before Christmas? You're working the day of, right?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, working day of. I was going to suggest having it afterwards...But Sherlock might explode.

John H. D. Watson said...

We could do afterward. He won't like it, obviously, but otherwise we're sort of skipping Christmas Eve, which isn't great either.

Greg Lestrade said...

He'll just want two Christmas Days - you know that ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Well...yes. But he'll want that anyway :)

Greg Lestrade said...

True! And you'll have to put up with me acting like a grumpy child who doesn't want to go to school on top of all of that ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. I don't want you to go to school either!

Greg Lestrade said...

I reckon the only way Sherlock will be truly happy is if it snows. Which actually isn't that unlikely, if the long range forecast is to be believed (they usually aren't though...)

John H. D. Watson said...

I think he secretly wants a snow machine for Christmas.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, I can tell him very un-secretly he won't get one.

He can stick his bubble gun out of the window and go down into the street. The bubbles might freeze before they hit him.

John H. D. Watson said...

That sounds better than snow actually. Do you think you could freeze bubbles in liquid nitrogen?

Greg Lestrade said...

I;ve seen pictures of frozen bubbles somewhere... let me try and find them

Greg Lestrade said...

He just does them outside when it's cold, apparently. Here's one of his shots:

...That is amazing. We need to do that.

Anonymous said...

That is pretty impressive!

Greg Lestrade said...

We need to plana holiday somewhere cold...

Bed? The boy will be leaping on us bright and early.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock was indeed up early.

I know this because he and I are currently in the park watching dawn break. My husband is toasty and warm and asleep back in bed.

...I can tell you where I'd rather be.

Sherlock said...

Yes tell him how good it is so next time he comes and doesn't miss it doing boring sleeping.

What a lovely way to start the day :-)

When do you get Mycroft back Sherlock? I hope you have a fun time all together :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

We got him a bit ago. Now out for a pub lunch :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm going to make you some sort of award for taking him to the park this morning. An award made from coffee.

Welcome home, Mycroft! I hope you have a lovely week.

I found this on tumblr this morning. I don't think I've heard any of you talk about comics, but, yknow, there's always room to make bikes more awesome. ;)

I'd like my award to start off being coffee, with a following of soft cosy bed.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I can arrange that.

Greg Lestrade said...

He was just far too bouncy and full of energy to keep in the flat.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can imagine. I'll have to see if I can wear him out this week. At least once...

Greg Lestrade said...

Good luck! My money is on him wearing you out though ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

That happens every week!

Joolz said...

Maybe you could all tag-team him. ;)

Welcome home Mycroft.
Hope you all have a fun week being together again. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

True, Danger. But he can go for a record of how quickly he can get you to tire. :)

I'll see if I can sort something for him to do.

pandabob said...

I hope you have a lovely holiday from school Mycroft. I guess you have the advantage over John and Lestrade when coping with holiday Sherlock in that you know you can have some proper sleep when you get back to school ;-)

Have a nice evening together gentlemen :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

It is great having Mycroft home. Doing technical considered cooking - not Sherlock style madness!

I'm glad you're all together again. I hope you all have a good week.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is great. I'm sure we'll have a lovely time.

Joolz said...

Morning all.
Hope your awakening wasn't quite so bouncy this morning, Greg.
Hope you got to see some amazing sights on Friday night, Mycroft.
Hope you haven't started being worn out yet, John.
Hope you're having fun with Mycroft being home, Sherlock.

Have a great day everyone. :)

Sherlock said...

We went swimming it was good I picked up every single thing from the bottom of the pool without breathing at all and it was a really long time.

Tina said...

That´s cool Sherlock! Go, you!

Joolz said...

That's brilliant, well done Sherlock, I bet you can hold your breath for the longest. Can you do a roly poly and a hand stand under water too.

Greg Lestrade said...

He was very good.

He can do handstands, but his roly polys (rocky plots, my phone insists) often become a bit like an octopus with out of control limbs about halfway through.

rsf said...

To me a roly poly is a small bug. What is it when you're swimming?

Small Hobbit said...

It's a somersault or a forward roll (except when it's a backward roll) RSF.

rsf said...

Sounds like a good way to get water up your nose. Congratulations on doing them, Sherlock! You're a better swimmer than I am!

Greg Lestrade said...

It's the moment of being upside down that he bails out of the turn! He tries to hold his nose, but that means he doesn't propel himself around enough.

rsf said...

Is it one of those tricks where you're supposed to be exhaling through your nose the whole way along? I never seem to have enough lung capacity for those. And nose clips seem like cheating.

REReader said...

He could always try a nose clip!

(I hate getting water up my nose.)

REReader said...

Heh, rsf--I got stuck in the captcha cycle again. But I don't think nose clips are cheating at all!

Sherlock said...

I can do it without I don't need one they look silly like hats

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh, I don't know, Sherlock - I think a fedora would look quite rakish if you could keep it on underwater.

REReader said...

I'm absolutely sure you'll get it right without a nose clip, Sherlock--such things are just shortcuts, not necessities, and you're a really good learner.

What did you do this afternoon?

rsf said...

I like hats! I wear one whenever I go outside. But I do think nose clips look a bit silly. Still, if I had a job where I needed to be upside down in the water, I'd get them and wear them because I'd rather look silly than get water up my nose.

Or down my nose.

Whichever it is...

Did you see the news about the huge fish that washed up in California? There have been two of them!

Greg Lestrade said...

RSF - I think he means swimming hats. He doesn't mind other hats.

pandabob said...

swimming sounds like it was good fun as well as being good for the health :-) I hope the afternoon provided equal entertainment :-)

rsf said...

Well then I have to agree with him. Swimming caps are silly. At least for anyone who isn't trying to make themselves as smooth as possible for swimming fast. And they give you a headache. I always thought it was unfair that all the girls had to wear swim caps and the boys didn't. I'm glad they don't make me wear one now.

Greg Lestrade said...

Afternoon involved cooking , homework against some extreme resistance, paperwork, chores - boring things! It was too rainy.

REReader said...

It sounds like homey things, which is nice really.

pandabob said...

I recognise that afternoon ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

It was pretty nice, really.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock did sort of get the idea of getting all homework out of the way on a boring rainy afternoon, so he didn't miss any fun later in the week....eventually.

John H. D. Watson said...

And when I say pretty nice, I mean for those of us who don't have homework, obviously. His suffering was immense...

REReader said...

But then there's that nice smug feeling to have it all done ahead of time, afterwards.
