Lestrade left around three to go and knock down someone's door. I didn't really get back to sleep. Too busy worrying about how it might go wrong, as if that ever helped anyone.
Sherlock woke up a little while ago and came to look for me in our room. He found me in the kitchen making tea and accused me of plotting to go with L and have fun without him. If only...
We've just watched this:
And I'm trying to convince him that Mycroft almost definitely does not want to join us on a pre-dawn stroll. He's made the point that the dogs definitely would, but I think Mycroft getting a full night's sleep trumps the dogs' constant need to smell things and then pee on them.
We'll go and get some sort of breakfast...something for everyone if anything's open this early and then come home and make tea before we disturb the hounds.
Greg, I hope your op went well, or is going well, and that you get everything you're looking for out of it. And let me know if you want anything while we're out. I love you.

I was wondering how long it would be before Sherlock woke up of his own accord. I hope morning London has some delights for the two of you!
It went... Reasonably well. Found some things we were after, not others. Although a team is still searching the house. Nothing went wrong, anyway.
Sherlock, I promise John wasn't plotting to come with me!
Hope you had a nice walk.
(I will get used to you calling me Greg one day, promise ;) at the moment I worry I've done something wrong every time!)
Heh. Good thing I'm still only managing it about a third of the time then...
I'm glad nothing went wrong.
I've got interviews to do. Will call you when I'm free, see where you are. Have a fun morning ;)
We went out and it was dark and raining and John said he didn't care if I jumped in puddles so I did and got really wet and then I had to stand outside the bakery because I was too muddy but we got pastries and then went home.
Sounds like a great morning.
There's just something happy about splashing in puddles on purpose isn't there, Sherlock? It's nice that John understands that--lots of adults forget. (Of course, you have to be able to go home and change after.)
For the ultimate in happy puddle splashing: http://youtu.be/w40ushYAaYA
Glad your op went reasonably well too, L.
Glad you survived the morning well despite the early hour, John, plus you got a lie-in for Mycroft, a puddle-fest for Sherlock and an injury free husband to come home early so I'd definitely call that a win.
1.5 success rate for today's ops doesn't sound too bad, Greg, glad it went OK.
Enjoy the rest of the day everyone. J
I think John understands it'll be easier to clean up after than forbid Sherlock to do it ;)
I do have an image of Sherlock outside the bakery dripping wet like a pet dog, nose pressed to the window.
Splashing in puddles is a great way to start a morning. I hope Sherlock helped you clean up, John. There must have been a trail of wet boy prints coming in when you got home.
Now I want pastry too. Or donuts. Can you get pumpkin or apple cider donuts there?
It's usually easier to clean up after...although not always.
In just about done. Might run and get a haircut before I meet you though.
I think John understands it'll be easier to clean up after than forbid Sherlock to do it ;)
That works too! (And now I can't get Gene Kelly out of my head...)
Might get my hair cut every week. The shaved bit at the back is like catnip to John, it's lovely. His hands just keep creeping back to rub over my head :)
heh, if it comes to that, you might want to just get one of those cut-your-own-hair clippers. Then you can do it whenever and wherever you want. ;)
glad the morning exercises went well, in all departments. I have fond memories of playing outside in the rain.
S
Shh, it feels nice.
Clearly I have missed something; what are puddles for if not for splashing in?
Avoiding.
I wish I had someone to teach my kids that Mycroft ;-)
I'm Glad this morning went well Greg and that you and Sherlock had fun John :-)
A - sadly the days are gone when the army used the barbers as surgeons... Or was it surgeons as barbers? Anyway, I fear no one has quite the skill to cut my hair. I don't want to shave it all, don't really like it.
I feel I should warn everyone on here. Greg Lestrade has employed me for this evening.
If anyone on here mentions the result of the Great British Bake Off before he's watched it (Arsenal are playing - he's watching that live, GBBO later, with Martha, and whoever else wants to.) then I am to track you down and make you suffer as only I can.
...What is the Great British Bake Off?
(Hi, Anthea! I hope you are well. :))
it's baking in a competition on TV and tonight it's the final and you have to be really good and Lestrade says John fancies the man who does the judging and Mrs Hudson says he's dishy and then the people have to do challenges and sometimes it goes really wrong and sometimes they're good and I bet Lestrade could go on it.
That's the best news I've heard in ages Anthea, I was planning on doing the same and just having to turn the internet off but I know no one is daft enough to risk giving it away now ;-)
Thank you, Sherlock, that sounds very exciting!
So are you going to enter next year, L?
Ha! Thanks Anth. (It is true - I will track down anyone who gives away the winner! Well...get Anthea to track you down. Far more terrifying ;) )
I won't do it, no. No time! And I'm definitely not good enough. I've never even heard of some of the stuff they've had to bake.
(And John does fancy Paul Hollywood - why else would he watch a show about baking?)
AnonyBob - you'll have to let us know when you've watched it, so we can decide if whoever wins deserved it!
(And John does fancy Paul Hollywood - why else would he watch a show about baking?)
I like watching you watch it. Also, Sue Perkins.
He makes noises when people burn things like it hurts.
Mel and Sue do make the programme so much better. Perfect hosts.
Sherlock - it does hurt!
I love that fluffy bit of shaved hair too John, & have been known to feel up my son & brother after a haircut too, but i have to emphasise that it's with a totally different connotation than with my husband. ;)
At the footy now, not that the Meadow is quite as exotic as the Emirates, but the players warming up are just as much fun to watch. good luck to the Gunners ;)
I am definitely not complaining about him feeling up my fluffy bits ;)
Honestly, I completely love him messing with my hair. Maybe he's the catnip and I'm the cat...
He makes noises when people burn things like it hurts.
Clearly he's very into it--it must make it fun to watch together!
Absolutely robbed. GBBO better not be won by someone who should have been sent off.
On the subject of baking, and cooking generally, a question that some of the lovely commenters here might know the answer to: a lot of American recipes call for the use of Kosher salt. Now I know what kosher means in reference to Judaism and foodstuffs, but I've seen it in all sorts of recipes - many that couldn't possibly be kosher. So is there something about kosher salt that makes it taste different from table salt or sea salt, for example?
The game not go well, Lestrade?
Actually, Nameless, when recipes call for kosher salt, they don't actually mean salt that is kosher (nearly all salt is kosher), but salt that is used to make meat kosher (by repeatedly salting and rinsing, it's used to draw the surface blood so it can be rinsed away. It's coarser than table salt, usually un-iodized.
2-1. It's not the end of the world, but we could have done with a win.
Right - Bake Off time! I'm going to go all out, and say I want Kimberley to win.
Nameless - if something calls for Kosher salt you can use normal salt, but use half as much table salt as you would Kosher salt.
Briefly back to the spiders: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-24623652
Sorry, you've lost me to baking - last challenge, too close to call!
Somehow, given he was up at 5am, Sherlock is still awake and sitting on me...
He would make a wedding cake with real spiders and skulls and horns and a puffa fish....apparently.
you'll have to let us know what you think of the result when you get there :-)
He wins ALL the points for originality!
ReRe, Lestrade - fascinating, thank you both! Does this mean that kosher salt is more like sea salt?
It doesn't have the inclusions (various minerals) you find in sea salt--it's very uniform, like table salt, but coarse like sea salt.
ooooooh...
Yeah, I think on the day, that was well deserved. I don't think, overall, she was the best baker. But I think she baked the best final.
I think that's a pretty good assessment :-)
Are you now being begged to recreate some of it instead of sleeping tonight? ;-)
sadly don't have the time to catch the live spiders Sherlock wants to pour out of his cake when it's cut...
Do have to put him to bed!
I think I'd probably agree with that too, the style of the wedding cake especially was lovely and it had bees, surely that could make up for the lack of spiders for Sherlock. :)
I need John to scrape me off the sofa and deposit me in bed. And then roll me out of bed onto the floor in the morning.
Surely Sherlock can handle the morning part. ;)
Does this mean I have to move?
mm, no. now you're playing with my hair again I forbid any other movement.
excellent
Think I've got Thurs, Sat, Sun off work. And MOE course on Fri, so up late, home early.
can you brush my teeth and have a wee for me? then put me to bed?
We fell asleep on the couch instead.
Going to bed now...slowly...
I don't know how you're even moving!
G'night, guys. :)
I finally had time to watch the video of the water droplets on the hot surfaces, wow that is amazing! thanks!!
The cut-your-own-hair clippers don't necessarily shave everything off, they have different attachments for different desired lengths, or no attachment for trimming around the ears safely or tidying up the back of the neck. I have to trim about every 4-6 weeks, and I can't be bothered to go have a hair appointment and pay someone for something I can do in ten minutes before I hop in the shower in the evening.
Just think, you could have John trim your hair with it, all the more fun! :)
S
This morning we took a leaf out of your book Sherlock and jumped in puddles all the way to school and it was great fun :-) I did get a few funny looks for singing while we did it though ;-)
I hope you're all having a good day :-)
S- i know how clippers work. mum used to clip us boys' hair when we were kids. I just don't want it the same length all over, i want short back and sides. I don't know if John feels like he could do that. But it doesn'treak the bank to pay someone a few quid every few months to do it for me.
Can we have a platypus? I can make it a place to live in the basement and it can be happy and maybe they can help train it if we got a male one because they have venemous spikes and I think they're good we watched a video of one.
I think they're endangered or protected. And I doubt one would want to live in a basement. They are amazing though. There's a stuffed one in the natural history museum. You can see the cut marks where they tried to cut its bill off because they thought someone was trying to trick them.
You know, Sherlock, I think you would make a wonderful veterinarian when you grow up--the kind that treats exotic animals in zoos and animal parks and the like.
If you three are in town, Sherlock, get John to call me. Got a surprise.
Is it a platypus?
Close...
Molly says you can go for a visit. And she has a whole empty freezer, so Sherlock can finally go in one like he's always wanted... Strange child.
He is so excited I'm concerned he may explode.
Probably wont be the first time a body exploded in there...
Have you seen one explode??? Can we go right now??? Are you going to come to?
No, yes, and I'll meet you there as soon as I can.
Bet I know what Sherlock's first question for Molly is going to be...
What? And we're buoy tiggt
'Have you ever seen a body explode?' And I was right.
we're buoy tiggt
We're what...?
And has Molly ever seen a body explode? (Or wasn't that the question? ;D)
What is "buoy tiggt"? (I can usually figure out the autocorrect errors, but that's beyond me!)
(ETA: It shouldn't take 7 tries to get past the captcha--darn you, cataract!)
Oh, ha, I was right too! :)
Should have said 'were you right?'
She has not seen a body explode. Sherlock was disappointed.
Do you mean a walk-in freezer or one of the sliding freezer drawers that pull out - either sounds very exciting. Hope you're having fun in there, Sherlock. Has Molly got any interesting souvenirs for you to bring away with you.
Three days off and one short day in between sound brilliant, Greg, lots more time to spend with your boys. :)
Sliding bits you pull out. Sherlock has always wanted to go in one, but couldn't when any part of the freezer in question was occupied. Today Molly had all the bodies in the other freezer, leaving this one for its first live inhabitant.
Might make him a bed on exactly the same design. Complete with door which locks from the outside.
She has not seen a body explode. Sherlock was disappointed.
Ah, well. Her career is not yet over--she may yet! :D
And peace descends on the morgue again...
Home soon, Danger. Hope you survive the little zombie boy you rescued from the freezer.
So what was it like, Sherlock? And what else did you see/do there?
That was really nice of Molly, I have to say. (Especially so close to Halloween!)
I'm so tired I could go to bed right now.
Long day?
Dunno. Didn't sleep that well last night, with the wind and rain howling around. Just all catching up with me - never used to get like this. Must getting old or something.
I think there's something in the air today, sleep seems like the number one thing on everyone's list!
I'm glad Sherlock had fun at the morgue it sounds like a trip that was somewhere between really cool and slightly strange ;-)
Well, morgue freezers and isolation tanks are...sort of the same. Except one is warm and comfortable and I imagine the other is very much not.
Did you like it, Sherlock? How long did you stay in?
S - glad to know it's not just me that wields a pair of clippers every few weeks :-) In fact, my hair needs cutting again now, might do it this evening...
