Greg's birthday is this week. Wednesday, in fact. I'm reminding him of this because he might want to take some time off. In case he gets a surprise trip somewhere. I'm just saying, it's not out of the realm of possibility. I thought about making it more surprising than this, but I think the destination will be enough.
The boys are going to stay with their mum, or, at least Sherlock is. Mycroft is insisting that he's old enough to stay here on his own. Which I think is fair enough, but that's ultimately his mum's decision, so I'll let them fight it out. It'd certainly be easier for him to get to work from here than from her place.
That's about it from me, except to say that I still have blackberry stains under my fingernails from picking them with Sherlock the other day. They may be permanent.
And I'm adding this in because L just showed it to me... A memorial for the people who died in World War I. Article here.

I've been being nice to her! Barely asked her at all about her love life recently (it's going well. They've been on four dates. She smiles when she talks about him.)

I love those figures. They're so...fragile, ghostly. Ephemeral. Like we all are, really. And the way they sag and lean against one another as the heat of the day wears them down...it's just beautiful.

Some friends of mine went to Birmingham for that art/memorial. Such a simple, expressive idea, and so very powerful. One report I saw commented on the way the mood in the crowd shifted as the statues melted away; it became quieter and more sombre.
Nameless - I'd loved to have seen it. But the photos seem to capture it quite well.
John hasn't yet told me where we're going. Or Sherlock. Guess which of us is being more patient about this??
Tomorrow morning marks 100 years since Britain entered The Great War.
I will, of course, ask for some time off work to spend with Mummy and Sherlock. But perhaps not the entire time you are away.
I refuse to speculate as to whether those two statements are related.

Mycroft, I don't know if you ever look at Twitter, but you might be interested in @WW1FO - it's "real-time" tweeting of FCO correspondence in the lead up to WWI. It's been fascinating, and at times deeply disconcerting, to watch those events slowly unfolding, juxtaposed with some of the events going on around the world right now.
I hope you enjoy a day or two with your Mum and Sherlock. And possibly a day or two not with with your Mum and Sherlock :-)
I just read some of that Twitter. Very interesting. Though when I think of World War I I think my primary thought about it will always be, "What a colossal waste of human life that was." Those 5000 little icicles--don't tell me the world wouldn't be a better place if those men hadn't had to go to France or whatever, but been able to stay home and raise families and love life as best they wanted. Such a waste.

I hope Mycroft gets some days on his own, Mrs. Hudson's on the property so it's not like he'd be without resources if he needed them. Not that I imagine he will.
Sorry Sherlock. It's the lot of the younger sibling to see the older hit milestones that are related to age, first. Often the younger also gets to do things at an earlier age than the older, though, (like you got to go on the three wheelers, or go ice skating) since they are *there* on the spot, or because their adults are less nervous about it after the first time.
Yay for Sally's fella and yay for semi-surprise birthday trips and super-yay for 6 days off IN A ROW.

sorry, folks, been absolutely manic today with work! then Sherlock was desperate to make his mum some ice cream and I had some stuff to do...and now it's late and the first time I've properly sat down and spoken to John.
Well it's better to get it all done now so it frees you up to enjoy your holiday all the more. :)

Yeah, seemed like a flavour she could've expressed a liking for - one she could have tried. Not like lychee and fish cakes or something.
And we are, apparently, having pizza tonight as our last night all together for a few days. John is being dragged around like a pizza topping mule as we speak.

I love walking around the streets at night - European cities are so alive, with everyone. It's brilliant. All the cafes being open, the public places. Even with my terrible French, I still feel so at home. Especially with you with me.
