the honest sausage

We went to get Mycroft's school things today, as planned. Anthea drove, Mrs H and Mycroft chatted on the way, and I tried to deflect Sherlock's attempts to ask her if we could have ice cream every five minutes. At the shop, Mrs H handled everything while I hung back and attempted to look as if I hadn't put on a ridiculously posh accent last time I was there. I'm pretty sure he recognised me anyway, but maybe he looks at everyone like that.

We got...everything. And picked up the laundry labels, which we ordered a while back. Mrs H said she could get someone else to sew them on, and I declined because...I'm an idiot? Sort of regretting it now, but not entirely.

Mycroft met one of the boys in his year while we were there. Sherlock did a surprise rendition of his jumping sider impression, I failed to catch him properly, and he knocked into the poor boy and sent him sprawling with an armful of newly purchased everything.

I took Sherlock outside after that, but Mycroft told me later that after he helped him up, they bonded over horrible younger siblings and all was well. His is a sister, who was not allowed to come along. They're also both in the same house, so no doubt they'll see each other again.

Afterwards, Mrs H took us all to the zoo and afterward, for lunch:

We'll have to go back there some time. It was very good sausage.

Glad it all went well.

Sorry you had to deal with jumping spiders on your own. But annoying siblings are good things to bond over.

I shall take your sausage recommendation.

Happy sewing. Get Sherlock to help. Mycroft will be the only boy with sutured name tags.

John H. D. Watson said...

You are brilliant! We'll definitely do that. Missed you today. We'll have to go back to the Honest Sausage when you can come along.

How's work? Have you eaten since breakfast? There are more HMN in your bag if you haven't found them yet.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not really hungry. Although that might be down to sheer volume of coffee consumed.

Missed you too.

Work's okay. Trying to catch up on the cases that have come in since I was last here properly.

John H. D. Watson said...

It might very possibly be that, yes. Try some water at least.

All right, I'lll leave you to it then. See you around seven?

Bronwyn said...

*eeps* So many sausage jokes. So little time. Oh God. I want so badly to comment on Greg liking John's . . . I'll stop there.

Anyway, I suppose it's a good thing that Sherlock provided a bonding moment? Maybe?

Dude! Suturing the name tags sounds amazing. I want to see Sherlock's handiwork on that one. As well, YAY MYCROFT! I'm so glad things seem to be falling into place for you.
Toodles,
Bronwyn

Greg Lestrade said...

You don't have to leave me to it. Been going mad in here on my own.

But yeah, about 7.

Water, yes doc.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh, good. I mean, not that you're going mad, but that I'm not bothering you. We're at Tesco looking for salmon that's up to Mycroft's standards. He's cooking tonight apparently.

Greg Lestrade said...

You never bother me. I'm sorry I'm being so useless.

Mycroft's a star.

John H. D. Watson said...

You're not being useless, love, you're fine. Apart from the no doubt epic caffeine jag you have going, of course.

Sherlock wants you to know that I left something important out: Mycroft will in fact be making dinner LIKE A BOSS.

Also, we made brownies LIKE A BOSS.

(I just typed brownies twice as bronwynies before I got it right. Your fault, Bronwyn!)

Greg Lestrade said...

You're all like bosses to me :)

Have got slight caffeine od. Keep clenching my teeth.

Tink said...

Lots and lots of water Greg *nods wisely*

How did Mrs H like the jumping spider impersonation?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not exactly surprised. I am seriously packing you a lunch tomorrow and nagging you until you eat it. Have some more water.

We have achieved salmon and are on the way home.

Becca said...

Did Mrs. H do anything LIKE A BOSS?

(Have survived the storm, though my parents lost two trees and don't expect to have power for another couple of days.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Tink - she was impressed at the height he got from a standing start if nothing else.

John H. D. Watson said...

Becca - I'm glad everyone is all right and very sorry about the lack of power. That's not a fun situation.

I'm pretty sure Mrs H does does everything LIKE A BOSS.

Bronwyn said...

Bronwyn bakes brown brownies. That'll mess with you. Also, brownies are one of my favorite things. I have a recipe for dark chocolate ones that are amazing. We call them Darth Chocolate because they're possibly evil.

But bronwynies is awesome. I may have to use that.
Toodles,
Bronwyn

Mycroft said...

Bronwyn, could we have your brownie recipe please? They sound good.

Greg Lestrade said...

On the way, sorry. Eat without me if you haven't already.

Mycroft said...

I had a slight problem. It might not be ready for some time yet.

Becca said...

I have decided that no power is much nicer in the summer than the winter, which we had last year. In the summer the days are longer and the house is still livable.

The power company gave out dry ice so people could try and save their freezers. Sherlock might have enjoyed that part!

Mycroft, I hope dinner can be saved. Sometimes when recipes go wrong I discover unintended but very interesting combinations.

Sherlock said...

I think we should go to Angelo's. It smells like smoke in here.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm on the way up. Mycroft, I'm sure we can sort it out if you want. Sign of a good cook isn't following a recipe, its working with whatever you've got.

Mycroft said...

Thank you. The glaze caught on fire a bit in the oven, but I think it might be all right underneath.

Greg Lestrade said...

It'll be fine. Lovely, in fact. He's done a fantastic job. As did everyone involved in bronwynie production.

Anon Without A Name said...

I love the idea that whatever Mycroft wears at school, he'll be carrying a little piece of everyone's time and attention with him. like having a tiny piece of family with him all day.

(Good lord, I must be a tired as Lestrade if I'm waxing poetic about name tags)

Yay for recoverable cooking incidents and bronwynies :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

He did a great job with the (minor) fire too - kept his head and didn't even call me until it was out. (Didn't chuck it into a pot plant or anything.) I'm sure it'll be delicious.

Greg Lestrade said...

I didn't chuck anything into a pot plant intentionally! It slipped!

Lupe said...

Yay! I'm glad the shopping trip went well and that Mycroft made a new acquaintance! :D Good luck with the sewing, guys. It's the kind of task that in my family we used to call "minas" (mines... as in, doing mine work :P). We called it that when we needed to help someone with something that was particularly tiring or that took a long time to be done. Something that required team work. Most of the time it was fun. :)

Ah. I was feeling down for some unfathomable reason, but reading this cheered me up. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

It slipped!

That's what they all say.

Lupe - glad we could cheer you up a little. The sewing will most definitely require team work!

Sherlock said...

Mines like underground mines? You should make brownies, that would make you happy.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmmmmm.

Can I cry off sewing and read case files in the bedroom?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, go ahead. Don't worry, I'm pretty sure we'll still be doing it at the weekend, so you can help then.

Greg Lestrade said...

Let me know when Sherlock's off to bed. I'll emerge. I just know he gets kleptomania when around my case files.

John H. D. Watson said...

He's in bed, and almost asleep. You've locked yourself in again, haven't you?

John H. D. Watson said...

...And you're asleep, aren't you.

Mycroft said...

I think I could get in through the window. I got up on the roof all right before.

John H. D. Watson said...

...I'll consider it. If I can't wake up him with several hundred texts.

Sally said...

Could call the fire station, have them bring round the long ladders...

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. The idea is faintly tempting, but I think we'll try to avoid it for now.

innie said...

Poor man, he needs his sleep.

I kind of want to advise you, John, to sneak up to Sherlock's room and do a jumping spider impression of your own, but . . .

ps - Mycroft, when you make your brownies, brown the butter first. Trust me, it makes a huge difference.

John H. D. Watson said...

Innie - Oh, the temptation... He'd be only too happy to get up again and play though. I have to wait until he's a surly teenager and sleeping till noon for that to work properly I think.

Desert Wanderer said...

Fellow Americans, am I the only one who gets the giggles every time there's discussion of setting "pot plants" on fire?

Becca said...

You are definitely not the other one. I did quite the double take.

Becca said...

Only one!

Greg Lestrade said...

Jesus! Just been woken by spider-mycroft clambering in the bedroom window and shaking me. Nearly had him in an arm lock before I bloody knew what was happening.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mycroft, I told you to wait!

Greg Lestrade said...

My fault for falling asleep. Sorry. Shit, I've done virtually nothing and a 13 yr old has risked life, limb, and the wrath of a nanny just to wake me. Sorry

Greg Lestrade said...

Desert wanderer, Becca, pot plant here means plants in pots and marijuana. But almost no one here smokes pot now, its almost all skunk and the stronger varieties, so its seen as very old fashioned.

Desert Wanderer said...

I figured that out after several embarassing conversations my first couple of years here. You'd think I'd be fluent after so long, but not so much.

And now I'm leaving, which makes me terribly sad. :(

Mycroft, I imagine you'd want to be careful about waking either Lestrade or John, especially if they're in a deep sleep. People who have a history of being in dangerous situations often default to self defense before they're entirely awake. It's not personal. It's not that they don't trust you or anything like that. It's more that their brains haven't caught up to the fact that it's you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Turned out all right in the end. No one fell to his death or had to sleep on the sofa.

Greg Lestrade said...

He was very careful, Kholly. Shouted and nudged me then backed off.

No deaths. No Danger evicted from his room.

No work done.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think you probably needed the sleep. As do I. Ready for bed?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I am.

Sorry. Again.

John H. D. Watson said...

No need to be sorry, you just fell asleep. You've had a long day.

innie said...

I have to wait until he's a surly teenager and sleeping till noon for that to work properly I think. I smiled like an idiot the entire subway ride home, just knowing that you can actually make these kinds of long-term plans and mean it. Sleep tight!

Bronwyn said...

You certainly may have the recipe, Mycroft. It's actually very simple.

Darth Chocolate Bronwynies
Brownies:
1/2 cup salted butter (melted)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 dark chocolate bar, crushed into small chunks (optional)

Topping:
1 12oz. bag semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Brownies
Preheat oven to 350F (175C). Grease and lightly flour a 9x9 inch square baking pan (use a 9x13 inch pan for a double batch).

In a large bowl, stir together butter, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time and whisk briskly until uniform.

In another bowl, stir or sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to egg mixtures (dry into wet) beating with a whisk or hand mixer until smooth. Stir in crushed chocolate. Spread evenly in pan.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until brownies begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. Remove from oven and cool ten minutes before topping.

Topping:
Carefully melt chocolate chips over a double-boiler or in a glass bowl in 30 second bursts in the microwave until smooth. Pour over brownies and allow to cool to room temperature. (You can cool them in the fridge, but the topping will develop white swirls).

Modifications:
Substitute 1/4 cup nuts, M&M's or crushed cookies in place of the chocolate bar

Substitute butterscotch chips in shell topping.
Substitute Darth Chocolate Icing in place of shell topping.

Darth Chocolate Icing
3 tablespoons salted butter, softened to room temperature
3 tablespoons dark chocolate cocoa powder
1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup powdered or confectioners sugar
1-2 tablespoons of milk

Using a mixer, beat butter, cocoa, honey and vanilla until blended. Slowly blend in powdered sugar. The icing will stiffen fairly quickly. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until the icing is a spreadable consistency. Spread over room temperature brownies.

Hope you enjoy it!
Bronwyn

Bronwyn: >_> I am absolutely trying that when I get back from the convention I'm headed to this weekend.

Greg: It's okay to sleep :D All turned out well in then end and now you get sleep AND John to snuggle with! Woohoo!

John: I approve of waiting until Sherlock is a teenager and sleeping all the time before reminding him of the Jumping Spider!

Greg Lestrade said...

Then Sorry I'm entirely cocking up the work/life balance. Again.

I'll either try to sort it to get a few evenings paperwork free, or I'll put myself on nights to spend time with you in the day, before the boys are back at school.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's all right, you're just catching up, that's all. It'll get better. We were gone for quite a while.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Like it to get better before Mycroft goes to school though, so ee can spend time together.

Anonymous said...

Bronwyn, I love you! Just as soon as it cools down, I'm going to make some of those brownies, that recipe looks amazing!

John, Lestrade, I hope you can get some sleep. Hopefully the paperwork will go fast tomorrow, Lestrade.

innie said...

Becca - remember the cupcake shop in Brooklyn? It used to be partners with Two Little Red Hens in Manhattan (2nd Ave @ 86th) and they have the Brooklyn Blackout cupcakes! Is that any easier for you to get to?

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm lost, Bronwyn. Who's Martin?

Small Hobbit said...

The captain of MJN Air.

I voted for him too, Bronwyn.

Greg Lestrade said...

Of course he is....

Danger has gone off into a land of polls I never understand.

Greg Lestrade said...

(i do know he and the boys like that show. I've never heard it. Hence not knowing anything.)

Becca said...

Innie, I was about to comment that I don't get up to the upper east side very often, but I'm thinking about volunteering at a hospital around there, so maybe I will go on a cupcake adventure!

CoffinAndTwo (but too lazy to log in properly) said...

Huh, I actually had no idea what "Cabin Pressure" was when I saw this poll. I had to consult wikipedia and then, of course, YouTube. Thanks for that - I am a 'CP' convert now! The show is exactly as brilliants as everyone keeps saying :)

And though I know we could all listen to Martin speak all day long, I voted for Douglas - someone has to be there for the underdog ;) Or would that be Arthur?...

and yet no one made one!

Me, I'm surprised that Lestrade needed anyone to recommend John's sausage to him.
