snow and pinstripes

It snowed. I believe Sherlock may have mentioned it once or twice. It's very pretty, or at least the parts that haven't been turned into grey sludge by the traffic are very pretty.

Sherlock has done his best to spend every waking moment outside and actually chose to walk to school today rather than have us take him on the bikes so he could be out in it longer. Amazing.

L and I dropped him off, had a run that ended with cold fingers, dripping noses, and a desperate desire for coffee. We went home rather than inflict our sweaty selves on some unsuspecting coffee shop. There were showers, coffee, toast, etc., and he talked to me about accent colours for the wedding, which seemed premature, since we don't know where we're having it, exactly when we're having it, or in fact any about it except that it will occur at some point in the future. But since we can't decide about any of those things, perhaps accent colours are a good place to start? He was talking about lithianthus purple (I had to look it up too), which is...extremely purple. But you can't get married in a beige jumper, and it is a nice colour.

Harry texted to say it should be a bee-themed wedding. I'm not even sure how that would work, but Sherlock would probably love it.

After lunch, we went to look at suits, which was like entering some sort of time warp composed of fabric, polished floors, and terrifying neckwear. We only went to two places, and then suddenly we were almost late to pick up Sherlock. I'll let L tell you about the shopping. The only thing I definitely decided was that I don't want to wear pink pinstripes, ever, for any reason, and I don't know how anyone could wear them without looking like a super-villain.

Accent colours because...well, because I feel like my brain can cope with them?

I just thought...purple, and then some simple white and foliage. Maybe ivy. And then...well, it sort of goes with everything...maybe?

It'll go with your purple pinstripes... ;)

Or a purple cravat, if you go for a three piece!

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I'll make a list. That'll help.

White and foliage is fine, but not ivy, please. My mum got me to eradicate it from her garden one summer, and I had blisters for weeks from yanking on it, and it always came back.

Are you getting a cravat?

Greg Lestrade said...

Make a few lists. Just one will be...terrifying.

No ivy, right. No orchids, either.

No, I'm not getting a cravat. Or a tie. Just an open necked shirt.

John H. D. Watson said...

Right, yeah. A list of lists.

REReader said...

Not to worry, John, pink pinstripes wouldn't look positively anemic with that rich purple, so you're safe!

I love the snow photo, it's making me wish for snow here even though I know it will become sooty and brown and yellow half an hour after it stops snowing.

(And I vote yes for purple and white and greenery, even though I know it doesn't count. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

and a list of things we're definitely not having??

There's still a lot of snow here, despite what Sherlock says. Most of it is just out of reach of small hands.

Danger, you can have a yellow and black striped suit instead? But it would have to be horizontal stripes... and you'd need little feelers on your head, holding your veil ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Like ivy, orchids, live bees, and ice sculptures?

No bees, or bee themed suits! Or...anything! Harry has already threatened to wear a yellow and black striped dress. You don't want me to match her, do you?

Greg Lestrade said...

You could match her if she's your...best woman? Flower girl? Groomsmaid? ;)

the first four sound like good things for the list. Add horrible little figures on top of the cake to it. And custom made paper confetti. ANd pink champagne.

In fact, just ask Nicky to show you the album from my wedding, which she's bound to have somewhere, and anything you see in it (apart from me) is, on the whole, on that list.

Went to a wedding with plastic 'confetti' scattered all over the tables, few of us played tiddlywinks all night, easily, unfortunately, the best part of the whole thing!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, John, I shouldn't have said anything. I don't mean to, you know, talk about it. Him.

Anon - that sounds...odd. And very unfortunate! We'll add plastic confetti to the list.

No ice sculptures?

Ah, well. Although I was just at a lunch where we ended up discussing the inevitable result of launching an ice swan out of a third floor window...

Maybe you could get married someplace tropical, like Hawaii, and that would mean dodging ties or cravats altogether.

custom made paper confetti

That's a thing that people do?

No, it's all right! I just got distracted. I wasn't not answering because of...anything. Except distracting.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's...yeah, a thing people do.

John H. D. Watson said...

inevitable result of launching an ice swan out of a third floor window...

If we can do that, I'd be fine with ice sculptures...

Greg Lestrade said...

remember Sherlock will read this, and probably transform you saying that into him telling Mrs N we're getting married by bungee jumping out of a hot air balloon surrounded by falling ice sculptures over Trafalgar Square...

John H. D. Watson said...

She'd probably believe it.

pandabob said...

that is so what you should do Greg ;-)

I'm glad you've had a good day together :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

She did ask today if we were really getting married. Obviously a yes.

And if we were doing it whilst sky-diving, because she didn't even know you could....but Sherlock had seemed so sure.

Be terrible to outpace your own confetti, wouldn't it? It would land hours after you'd gone home.

John H. D. Watson said...

You'd have to weigh it down somehow. And then it would plummet to earth and take out spectators.

Greg Lestrade said...

I refuse to investigate deaths at my own wedding...

REReader said...

That last comment came to me email all by its lonesome--O_O !! :D

(Everything okay?)

Small Hobbit said...

I do pity Mrs N having to work out what is actually happening from the more extremes of Sherlock's imagination.

Hope those who've got snow today are the one's that want it. We've had a smattering overnight.

pandabob said...

How's the snow this morning?

Have a good day all of you :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

No new snow. Still plenty of leftovers.

SH - she does a good job of it! But yes, given our lives have odd things happening anyway, she has a hell of a job sometimes.

RR - just wasn't sleeping. Now walked into a complete shitstorm at work. And two suspicious deaths.

pandabob said...

That doesn't sound nice Greg, good luck with sorting things out.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers. Got an acting sergeant in my team. Hardest step, constable to sergeant, and he's... Well, he got something very wrong, and there's a lot of fall out.

Plus dead bodies. And I

pandabob said...

oh dear :-(

REReader said...

That sounds fairly unraveling. I hope things look better by the end of the day...

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, got called away halfway through that comment and now have no idea what I was going to say.

pandabob said...

I thought that was the case or that in the stress of it all you'd just forgotten what you wanted to say ;-)

I hope things become clearer and nicer for you as the day goes on.

John H. D. Watson said...

I was going to ask if you wanted lunch, but it sounds like there's too much going on?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, sorry. Not really giving me an appetite, either. You okay? You were very fast asleep this morning, even Sherlock arriving in bed didn't wake you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, just tired. And looked it, apparently. My krav maga instructor asked if I were going to sleep through. I unwisely said yes, and got demonstrated on for the next hour.

Have you fixed whatever your acting sergeant did?

John H. D. Watson said...

...through class, that is.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope you're okay.

And no, not really fixable. We just have to deal with it. Think he may have set his promotion back though.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh dear. I'm sorry.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry the day isn't going well, Lestrade. I hope it gets better.

John, I saw this and thought you might get a kick out of it. I used to work with this guy's wife, so I'm eagerly waiting for the next episode. It will be interesting to see his progress.

REReader said...

Sounds like a rough day all around. :( I hope everyone's afternoon/evening is substantially better.

Are you enjoying the Krav Maga classes otherwise, John?

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, Sal and I will be passing by the flat soon. Might come in and grab a coffee if you're there? I know Sherlock is dying to show Sal his biker gear.

Sherlock, are there any scones left to offer Sal, or has John eaten them all?

John H. D. Watson said...

We're here, yeah, and there are enough scones if Sherlock doesn't have anymore, which he shouldn't anyway. I'll make coffee.

Pip - only had time to watch about two minutes of that video, but I love the concept! Will watch more later when things calm down.

Greg Lestrade said...

When things calm down? 15, 20 years then?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah...maybe I should rephrase...

Greg Lestrade said...

I have had people attempt to evade arrest and kick me off their property when their freedom was in jeopardy less ,... Vigorously than Sherlock just welcomed us through the door.

Catching a flying boy complete with helmet on is painful!

Sherlock said...

I did the jump really well! I've been practicing in kung fu!

REReader said...

Ouch, L. :)

Martial arts is something you need to practice not just until you get it right, but until you can't get it wrong, so good for you for practicing a lot, Sherlock!

Anonymous said...

L, every time you describe a greeting like that all I can think is it's nice to be loved.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is. I'm still surprised, sometimes, to get an enthusiastic welcome, after a very long time of the opposite.

It was a very good jump, Sherlock. And now I have matching bruises front and back from you head butting me on the bike, and greeting me home. Danger, you get to fix my battered body later ;)

Sally was very impressed by your Kung fu moves, Sherlock. She said we should take you with us when John's away

Sherlock said...

YES YOU SHOULD, I could help and ride my bike to chase criminals because I'm faster than you and John when you run so I could definite catch them!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm afraid, however useful you might be, that you need to be at school. Sorry.

Sherlock said...

But Sally said!

Greg Lestrade said...

She was joking, kiddo. You need to be at school, and I'll do everything I can to have a lot of time off to drop you off and pick you up and we'll do a lot of fun stuff and go to the park and things, I promise.

REReader said...

(And it was also a compliment on how well you're doing at kung fu! Which was nice of her.)

Greg Lestrade said...

just leaving. Make any requests quickly.

REReader said...

So tempted to start calling out song titles.... :D

Sherlock said...

Hurry uppppp

Greg Lestrade said...

whhhyyyyyyyyy?

John H. D. Watson said...

Because we miss you! Or because Sherlock wants to do some kung fu on you again...

Greg Lestrade said...

kung fu, I think...

REReader said...

More jumps? :)

Anon Without A Name said...

Argh, sounds like horrible day, Lestrade. I hope your Sergeant is OK, and that whatever he fucked up doesn't have too much impact on any victims or their families.

John - hope you survived krav magra reasonably intact :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Only mildly bruised, thanks, Nameless.
