marriage of true brains

Interesting photos from a professor of neuroscience, Eran Gilat.
Found while googling ice brains with Sherlock.

We had lunch with Jo and Lisa today. They seem to have every detail of their wedding firmly under control. Lisa said she started thinking about it two years ago. Lestrade and I are planning to get married this spring or summer, and we haven't even started. The more I think about it, the more it starts turning into a mental game of 'who can I afford to offend by not inviting them?'

Well...that's overstating it. Obviously, I don't want to offend anyone, and it's possible my parents may not even want to come. It's a long trip for them, and they're getting older. But once you get outside immediate family, any hypothetical guest list seems to grow exponentially until you're inviting your cousin's dentist, and there's tulle draped over everything, and ice sculptures of zombies eating ice brains.

I told Harry I thought twenty people would be more than enough, and she laughed at me until I was forced to hang up on her. But Harry's wedding was enormous, and she probably would've invited our cousin's dentist, if we had cousins. She might be right to laugh though. When I count up the people I consider immediate family these days, there's already 11 of them, and that's not counting me and Lestrade.

Texts, after I hung up on her.

Harry: you should run away and get married in vegas
Harry: by elvis
Harry: wearing elvis costumes
Harry: WHILE SKYDIVING

YES skydiving and zombies!

John H. D. Watson said...

I had a feeling you'd approve of that, Sherlock.

When we got married, our immediate family was in the thirties. Didn't invite any of them - they understood :-) We also planned it six weeks ahead, which I'm given to understand isn't usual...

It's your day, you and Lestrade - do what makes you happy, what you feel works. Your wedding is no-one else's business unless you choose to make it so. You want to get married whilst skydiving with Elvis Zombies wearing tulle - go for it; you want a quiet ceremony with just you guys, the boys, Mrs H and another witness, do that :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

I didn't mean immediate family in that sense. I meant the people I think of as my family - Mrs Hudson, Mrs H, Murray, Anthea, Nicky and her lot. People like that.

The idea of zombie ice sculptures is gaining a strange appeal, but I think quiet and small would be good, yeah.

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know what I want! :)

John H. D. Watson said...

You don't want to get married by (or to) Elvis, right?

Anon Without A Name said...

John - ah, I see, right. Yeah, we had friends as witnesses, rather than family, because... well. Yeah. Made sense to us to do it that way :-)

Lestrade - you know you want a sharp suit, and not too much fuss, that's a good start :-)

REReader said...

Maybe you two could make lists, each of you separately, of "wants" and "don't wants", then swap and go on from there? Because what the two of you want and don't want for your day should be the core of what you actually do.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I would like a nice suit, that's true.

But If John wants to get married skydiving, or on a beach, I'll be happy to dress appropriately!

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, seriously, how much would you want to spend on a suit? Because I'd like us...not to match, but, you know, compliment each other. So I don't want to miss the mark by too much when deciding what sort I'd like ;)

(presuming I'm not going to be wearing bermuda shorts and a smile...)

John H. D. Watson said...

Or a sequined jumpsuit?

Would it be unhelpful to say that I'd be perfectly happy with whatever you want? I'm not sure I have a realistic idea of how much nice suits cost.

Greg Lestrade said...

Errr..*nice* suits...you're looking at not much change from £4000.

Nice suits you can get for under a grand.

Suits you can get for fifty quid :)

John H. D. Watson said...

The under fifty quid variety are the only ones I've been familiar with up to now. Well, you know that. You've seen my suit. Which level were you thinking of?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, your posh mess uniform can't have given you much - if any - change from a grand, surely?

John H. D. Watson said...

That's not a suit though, it's a uniform. And you don't go and pick it out and make choices about it; it's inflicted upon you.

Greg Lestrade said...

But it's all bespoke, right? Or how about your dress uniform - bit more like a suit, I suppose. I mean, didn't they feel much better than anything off the peg - all cut just for you?

John H. D. Watson said...

I suppose they fit better. Wasn't really ever thinking about that when I had them on.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right.

Well, it's not like we'll need them again. So probably stupid to pay anything crazy.

pandabob said...

if you can't treat yourselves to good suits for your wedding when can you?

John H. D. Watson said...

I can't tell if you don't want to, or if you're trying to talk yourself out of it.

I think it'd nice to have...well, nice ones.

Greg Lestrade said...

Anony - Can't really justify having something to wear for one day that cost a bomb though. Not like I'd wear it to work after :)

Danger - both?

REReader said...

Oh, I don't know, L--wedding gowns cost the earth and they can't be used for anything else, but a good suit can be. (Whether it would be or not, it COULD!)

pandabob said...

do you know that 'its my wedding day' is all the justification you need?

if you were spending someone elses money or buying a suit instead of feeding the boys than you'd be right but you aren't you will be spending your money on something that will make you feel at your best on the most amazing day of your life.

If you want an expensive suit then buy one you deserve it :-)

(how many women do you see going to work in their wedding dresses?)

Anonymous said...

Anything you plan that makes you both happy is the way to go :)

I had a slightly unconventional wedding...the best bit was convincing the church to play the TARDIS landing sound effect as the doors opened for marching up the aisle. (This was in 2001, and almost nobody knew what it was, but I loved it.)

Shy Anon Peeking In Again

Greg Lestrade said...

I know wedding dresses often won't be used again/worn again either. But not everyone has one, right? Plenty of people get married in something more practical and able to be used after the event, I'm sure.

Shy Anon - I can't say I'd want the Tardis, but I like the idea of having something personal/amusing/different, if it's something that means a lot to the people involved.

John H. D. Watson said...

Shy anon - ha, that's fantastic.

L - you could show me the sort of thing you have in mind?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I'll see. Every house has it's own style, so...you know, they're all different.

But we could get something off the peg and just have them tailored. I don't know.

REReader said...

Plenty of people get married in something more practical and able to be used after the event, I'm sure.

....Hmmm...I guess there must be, of course. But while I know several men who got married in a suit they already owned--and almost all of them continued to wear those suits for ages--, I don't personally know one single bride who didn't buy something special for the wedding, or who didn't put it away after. Maybe I know the wrong people!

pandabob said...

you two bug me slightly with things like this you know. Buy the bloody suits will you. ITS YOUR WEDDING DAY the one day when being sensible and doing what you should goes out the window and doing what you want to is what matters. Stop trying to justify it and stop behaving like you'd be doing something wrong by doing it, just buy the bloody suits!!

(the mark is somewhere way back there, I know I over stepped it, sorry)

Small Hobbit said...

What Anonybob said: Buy the suits! You know you want to.

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - lots of people I know have done that.

AnonyBob, SH - I guess we'll go and look at some first? Decide what we want to do.

pandabob said...

think of it like bike shopping, if you find a suit you like then there is no other suit ;-)

Small Hobbit said...

Sounds good to me.

Is there any reason why we can't all look for virtual hats, since we'll be virtually attending? I know you want a quiet wedding, but we'll be partying in a field somewhere.

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I suppose, if you look at it like bike shopping, then.....I could buy a new bike for the cost of two suits! ;)

SH - virtual hats are welcome at the virtual party. We shall inform you of the flower-scheme asap to allow for suitable colours etc. to be chosen, if needed.

pandabob said...

you could you're right :-)

is that why you don't want to buy the suits, so you can afford a BMW?

Greg Lestrade said...

I shall come over there and wash your mouth out, young lady.

(we could sell Danger's BMW and buy the suits)

pandabob said...

once again I thank god you don't know my address!!

this hiding behind the internet things is quite fun ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

sell Danger's BMW

Over my dead body.

I could buy us the suits though, if you'd like? As a wedding gift.

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - Don't underestimate what Anthea could find out for me...

Danger...well, it's...a thought. We should go and look, next time I'm off in the week. Just see a few styles, that sort of thing. Get a feel for it all.

It is, I'm afraid to say, looking like snow for large parts of Friday and into Saturday. Just so you're ready for Stratospheric Sherlock...

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, all right.

No one's ever truly ready for that.

Greg Lestrade said...

Been a while since I've biked in with both feet on the ground all the way - it's kind of like snowmobiling, with significantly more chance of falling off/over, I guess? We'll see how much settles in the city. It'll never be enough for him!

REReader said...

looking like snow for large parts of Friday and into Saturday

YAY!!

*ahem* Excuse me. I'm just back from a CD release party and am feeling exuberant. But weekend snow, excellent!

pandabob said...

how goes the day gentlemen?

its freezing here! I hope its warmer where you are :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, pretty freezing here.

Dealing with...the sort of person who makes me want to beat my head against a wall.

pandabob said...

I guess beating your head against a wall will get you in less trouble that beating them but I hope you're not having to do either and they've gone away and left you alone or at least done what you wanted :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

They're a 'witness' so sadly i had to talk to them. And probably will again.

Condescending in the extreme. Rubs me up the wrong way.

pandabob said...

In my best condescending tone can I say well done you for not losing your rag with them ;-)

In all seriousness though I hope your day improves and you don't have to deal with people like that again for a while :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Can't lose my rag in public. Just like I can't on here. john will doubtless have to live through me having a good moan later :)

pandabob said...

I'd say that's what John's there for except it isn't.

This isn't public this is yours if you want to lose your rag with any of us for bugging you you really should.

Your blog your rules, actually this one is John's but you know what I mean :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Your moans are generally entertaining. Sorry you're having to deal with idiots though.

Also, just read this, found it pretty entertaining as well:

REReader said...

I hope the rest of the day goes better, L.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sadly, Anonybob, as a servant of her Maj, we are never off duty, and this is public, and I can't risk bringing the service into disrepute.

pandabob said...

I guess you're right Greg, I suppose you just have to rely on us all to be thoughtful enough for there to be no need :-)

John that link is great :-)

REReader said...

All I can say to that Onion piece, John, is HA!!! (*runs off to share it* .... :D)

Greg Lestrade said...

You're very kind for letting me moan. It does help.

You having a good day?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, not bad. Sherlock's been asking me a thousand questions about the training course, and how long I'd be gone and why could you and he both come with me and would you have ice cream for dinner every night if I wasn't there...

Greg Lestrade said...

Tell him we'll go out for deep fried battered ice cream one night.

Sherlock said...

REALLY??

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, really mate.

John H. D. Watson said...

He says I should leave as soon as possible.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well at least wait until I'm home!

Greg Lestrade said...

It is, of course, dependent on him being very well behaved, which he has been a lot recently, so I'm sure that will pose him no problem.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't know, if there's going to be deep fried battered ice cream, I might have to stay...

Sherlock said...

No it won't work if you're here goooooooo. I will be good!

Greg Lestrade said...

I promise to take you there on one of our date nights, if you're good.

I cant believe I hzvent taken you there already.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can't either! Looking forward to it. :)

pandabob said...

I hope you're home/on your way home Greg and that a peaceful relaxing evening is a head for all of you :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I am.

John and Sherlock are both asking about deep fried ice cream. Sherlock is asking when John is going...

I'm trying to work out when I get another day off and not rant about annoying people.

pandabob said...

Draft blog post about annoying people? gets it out of your head and out of the flat without anyone seeing it :-)

I hope John and Sherlock can find a way to help you relax even if it is dragging you out somewhere for ice cream ;-)

REReader said...

Maybe they can help you come up with creative, yet appropriate fates for annoying people!

Greg Lestrade said...

it's okay, told John about it, whilst Sherlock used me as a climbing frame, got it off my chest. Then got Sherlock off my head. Now have a degu on my shoulder.

People trying to walk all over me is the theme for my day!

pandabob said...

I'm sorry your day's been full of gits you deserve better than that.

I'm glad your boys have helped you get it off your chest though :-)

REReader said...

Happily, who's doing the walking makes quite a difference.... :)

Small Hobbit said...

There's a degu on my shoulder
A sky of snow above
There's a Doc who cares
My troubles he shares
And I'm in love.

John H. D. Watson said...

Lovely, SH. :)

Desert Wanderer said...

Your moans are generally entertaining.

Guys....how did we let that pass without comment?

REReader said...

Yay! DW is back!

How's things, DW?

pandabob said...

Hey DW :-)

Now you come to mention it I have no idea how we all missed that one! I hope you're going to be around to point such things out for a bit ;-)

Desert Wanderer said...

Things are going, RR. My boss is keeping me very busy, and I just found out I'll be making another trip to look for "Dr. Danger was here" on the sides of plywood huts later this year...with the Army. I believe this is what is referred to as karma?

Anonymous said...

I've totally found you the wedding outfits you should be going for!

Greg Lestrade said...

I like the fourth one down. Red and black, bare torso.

Danger, remind me later, I have a serious wedding question to ask.

REReader said...

Sounds like a very interesting trip, DW... :)

Yay for snow! If it keeps coming down you should have a nice amount for snowball and perhaps snowman creation by the time school is out! Are you all excited, John? :D

(Although I hope you don't have to get out and work in it, L. It may be pretty while it's falling, but I don't imagine it's good for evidence collection, to say nothing of the cold.)

John H. D. Watson said...

how did we let that pass without comment?

I was wondering that as well... Good luck, DW, if you're going back there.

L - what serious question is that?

Anonymous said...

Good luck, DW. Although I'm not sure what you're implying about the Army... ;-P

John, L, I hope you get lots of snow to make a snowman with!

Greg Lestrade said...

Regarding possible dancing at possible wedding party...

I'm cold. Despite being bundled up in jeans, longjohns, etc.

Don't get lost in a snowdrift, Danger. Wear your bright hat.

Desert Wanderer said...

Does his bright hat have a flag sticking out the top? Because otherwise....

Not implying anything about the Army, pip. Just that I'll have to learn to grunt properly...

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock is wearing the hat, as he managed to lose his at school somewhere. Mrs N said she'd look for it.

L - as in, do I want to? Or will I embarrass you horribly by stepping on your toes? (probably) Or...?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well... Start with do you want to, because it'll be a short conversation if the answer is 'no'

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. Unless you don't? Be nice if we could practise a bit beforehand though.

Greg Lestrade said...

I do. I've sort of... Got a song in mind. But we would need to practice. Maybe...with help. I'll talk to you later.

Meanwhile, remember in explicit detail what we did in that hotel with the bed in the cage. It'll keep your ears and face warm until you get your hat back ;)

Mycroft, hope you find time to enjoy the snow.

DW - you mean the army taught John to grunt like that? And there was I thinking I just brought the best out of him...

John H. D. Watson said...

With help? All right...

That is a completely different sort of grunt than any the Army taught me.

Desert Wanderer said...

Therewith a difference between making an instrument and beinga virtuoso on one, Lestrade.

Small Hobbit said...

DW - it's lovely to have you back.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, thats very flattering... But i can assure you, others have spent time tuning the instrument before I started fumbling about trying to get a good note ;)

piplover said...

I can neither confirm nor deny the differnt types of grunts the Army may have taught me. But it was fun learning them!

Mycroft said...

Any boy who had done all their work was allowed out in the snow after lessons today.

Some of us from Astro helped our master build a replica solar system with snowballs.

John H. D. Watson said...

Was it to scale?

REReader said...

Ha, John, that is exactly what I was about to ask!

Mycroft said...

Obviously not. Even a basic knowledge of the Solar System would show that that wouldn't be possible at school.

If it had been, to make Mercury visible to the naked eye we would have had to walk four or five kilometres to place Neptune correctly.

I do not believe it will go toward our grade, thankfully, given the atrocious inaccuracies.

Greg Lestrade said...

Of course, Mycroft - I knew that.

The snow here is falling as actual snowflake crystal shapes - you know, like they say it will! It's the softest powder...

Hope you've had fun, Sherlock. Are you still out having fun? Has John's blush melted all the snow in Greater London?

John H. D. Watson said...

I was just wondering how big you'd have to make Jupiter...

We are still out, although 'having fun' is debatable for the half of us who can no longer feel his ears. I hate to make Sherlock leave though. He's still so excited.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll be with you...well, as soon as I can slither through the streets... I'll warm your ears. And your cockles.

And now I'm quite scared of proving myself exceedingly stupid...but isn't the sun the biggest thing? So, that would sort of...determine everything else. Right? (Or...wrong?)

REReader said...

Mycroft, I seem to recall--from my days visiting the Haydn Planetarium in my youth--that if you allowed the smallest planets to be represented just a bit out of scale you could construct a reasonably representative scale model of the inner planets if you had a space the size of a football field. Was this incorrect? Or did you not have a playing field at your disposal?

John--It sounds like Sherlock is having a wonderful afternoon! Did the two of you make a snowman?

John H. D. Watson said...

L - wasn't thinking about it that hard, really. I just like Jupiter, that's why I was wondering.

Mycroft said...

I suppose that would depend on what you had at your disposal to create the other planets, and what you consider 'just a bit out of scale'.

With snow, the smallest you can really have and still be visible is around 50mm, we thought.

This would require the Sun to be approximately 16 metres in diameter, and Neptune to be 51 kilometres away.

Anonymous said...

Was the atrociously out of scale version at least fun to make?

REReader said...

How far out did you put Neptune, then--51 kilometers being a somewhat inconvenient distance? Did you include tracings of the orbits? (And did you include Pluto, now that they've defined planets so that it's not one?)

It may not have been an accurate model, but I hope it was at least fun to construct!

REReader said...

Ha--snap, kholly! :)

Anonymous said...

if you could coordinate all the people who comment on here maybe you could create something close to scale, not that you'd be able to see it I guess.

Mycroft said...

It was a lot of fun.

We scuffed orbital paths into the snow.

Our Astronomy Master and our House Master were unfortunate that they strayed into the path of more comets than one would have thought probable, in the vastness of space.

REReader said...

Ha! :D

Anon Without A Name said...

Heh - nice one, Mycroft :-) I'm glad you were able to get out and have fun in the snow.

John H. D. Watson said...

L showed up out of the blue and launched a sneak attack... Sherlock is so coated in snow he looks like a yeti.

REReader said...

And I imagine he is as gleeful as he is snow-covered... :)

(Have your ears frozen yet? It's a long time to be outside in the snow without a hat!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes Johnny, put a hat on!

John H. D. Watson said...

hats made out of snow help no one!

pandabob said...

I'm glad you enjoyed the snow Mycroft did you manage to avoid the comets?

Enjoy the snow you three and enjoy getting warm again later :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

hpw can u b so seriius saying that/?

my fingrrsso numn!

John H. D. Watson said...

it was in my ears!

Right, time to go home. Who wants to pick up pizza on the way?

Greg Lestrade said...

cant go yet!

SHERLOCK said...

YES PIZZA BUT NOT YET

John H. D. Watson said...

Yes yet! You are both turning blue!

John H. D. Watson said...

They are both making the same face at me...

Really, time to go. Pizza, home, dry clothes. We can't stay out all night, come on.

Sherlock said...

Can we have pizza with cheesy crust and garlic bread and garlic dip and come back out in the snow tomorrow?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yes, we can, as long as no one mopes too much about leaving now.

Sherlock said...

Tell Lestrade to come on then because I want pizza and he's not allowed to ruin it by moping! If he puts snow in your hood like he is doing then don't stop me having pizza just him.

I wish Mycroft was home this weekend not next weekend because that would be good in the snow.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - that would be pretty great. Maybe we can go and see him tomorrow if he's got time.

One more iminute, I just need to rub snow in L's hair

Sherlock said...

When you've stopped being silly and rolling on the floor and we've got pizza can we find some really clean snow near home and put it in a bowl and give it to the degus to play with please?

John H. D. Watson said...

I think we're done now. Would they like that? It wouldn't be too cold for them?

Sherlock said...

I don't know but if we put it in a dish then they can not go on it if they don't like it but they might.

Your cheeks are all red and there's snow melting in your hood still.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right, we can try it.

Yeah, it's running down my neck too...

Greg Lestrade said...

Obviously a quirk of nature caused a small snowdrift in your hood. You probably stood with your back to the wind too long or something...

Let me help remove some of it.

REReader said...

It should be interesting to see what the degus make of the snow before their bowlful melts--I hope they enjoy it. That was a nice thought, Sherlock!

Desert Wandrer said...

Mycroft, did you include Pluto?

Mycroft said...

No, we didn't. There was some discussion about it, but we decided against it.

Had we continued and added other points of interest, such as moons, we might have put it in.
