hollandaise

He wasn't joking about the breakfast in bed. I woke up to tea and eggs benedict, all made from scratch.

Me: You can make hollandaise sauce?
L: Where did you think it came from?
Me: A jar at the supermarket?

Although honestly, I'm not sure I've ever seen it at the supermarket, and I know I've never had it at home. It was excellent, of course, much better than when I've had it in restaurants, and presented on a tray with a rose and everything. I was very impressed. (That sounds flippant when I read it over, but I really was. Am still. Not used to that sort of thing.)

This is the mill:

We've been out walking most of the afternoon. It's chilly and quiet and peaceful. The only thing you hear is the water and the wind.

That is beautiful.

(The picture, too. :))

Hollandaise sauce is...well, it's about the easiest sauce in the world to make!

I can't believe how nice it is around here. Much nicer with you, though. And just chilly enough to necessitate plenty of hugs during walks :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Still a mystery to me!

Mmhmm. And insertion of my hand into your back pocket.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd teach you how to make it...but then I'd have no way to thank you when you do things like this. Man's got to have some secrets up his sleeve!

Your hand is most welcome in my back pocket. Nice not worrying or caring about anyone seeing or judging us, either. Very relaxing. Sort of nicer, for being cold and deserted, really. Wouldn't be as good full of tourists.

I adore walking on brisk days and knowing I can go home to a nice warm home and have apples and hot chocolate and a good book waiting for me. Of course, there's something to be said for having a gorgeous man to go home with as well!

Glad you're enjoying every minute of your time together!

innie said...

ps - Lestrade, I seem to remember you threatening Danger with some Aussiebums - did they end up in your bags, or have you not yet bought them?

Greg Lestrade said...

Odd that you should mention Aussiebums, Innie. Have you been plotting with Danger or something??

Essentially, the Doc has managed to engineer it so I'm completely unprepared for Valentine's in any way, whereas he's got everything completely planned out and is being stunningly romantic, with no way for me to respond!

John H. D. Watson said...

It wouldn't be a surprise otherwise!

Greg Lestrade said...

Still not fair!

Do you like lemon meringue pie?

John H. D. Watson said...

Love it. :)

innie said...

Oh, L, if I were plotting with Danger, you'd be solving crimes and cooking meals and loving three extraordinary boys and . . . wait, I wouldn't change a thing about you. Guess I am plotting with Danger! (Though, ahem, it would be easier if you'd all just come to New York!)

Greg Lestrade said...

I just ask because he's the one who's been doing the underwear shopping for me... (well, he is the expert, being the ex-model, I suppose!)

Danger - that's very convenient of you, as this morning's breakfast has left me with some egg whites and lemons, which naturally suggests LMP, to me.

We don't really have to go home tomorrow, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

You could call work and tell them you're off being a secret agent...

Greg Lestrade said...

undercover work? ;) getting in deep... pumping contacts for information?

You really don't know how tempting that is.

John H. D. Watson said...

Working hard all night long, that sort of thing.

Oh, I think I have a fair idea.

Greg Lestrade said...

Times like this do make me want to retire.

Which would probably be a bad idea in the end. But still...

Shall we try and get somewhere with the boys at Easter?

John H. D. Watson said...

You'd be bored stiff within a week.

Yeah, that'd be nice. When's your race again? Not conveniently over Mycroft's holiday I suppose?

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm. stiff. I know, I just...well, yeah, you're right. I would be.

Provisional dates are 28th May - 8th June. So the second week would be Mycroft's half term. But those are only provisional, they haven't confirmed yet.

And every time you call it 'my' race I think I've forgotten I've done something silly like enter a marathon or something!

Desert Wanderer said...

You do seem to have a talent for getting a firm grasp of the situation. You know, for taking hold of a problem and not letting go until it's resolved. Useful skill, that.

John H. D. Watson said...

Now there's an idea...

Greg Lestrade said...

where's an idea...

Anon Without A Name said...

with no way for me to respond!

Oh, I don't know, Lestrade. You cooked John dinner, and breakfast, and you're making supper, you've been his personal body warmer when he slipped his hand into your back pocket (and dear god, I hope that wasn't a euphemism), and I'm pretty sure you've been quite... demonstrative in your appreciation. So I don't think you need to worry too much about not having had time to prepare a big Valentine's day for John.

John - the whole weekend sounds blissful, what a wonderful thing to have done :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - the London Marathon!

Nameless - it was not a euphemism! And you're right, he's lovely and doesn't need to worry at all.

Greg Lestrade said...

when he slipped his hand into your back pocket (and dear god, I hope that wasn't a euphemism)

Ha! Not this time ;)

But I will need to buy him something in return for my really...stunningly hot pink boxers. I do.

Greg Lestrade said...

The marathon?? I nearly died running 5 mils the other day, let alone the other 21!

John H. D. Watson said...

They suit you. And go surprisingly well with the glasses.

I could do it though, maybe.

Greg Lestrade said...

You are...a very odd man, with very odd tastes. But as they include grey DIs in hot pink pants and reading glasses...who am I to complain?

Right, well if you did it, I couldn't not do it, because you'd be some sort of sculpted God - moreso than you are already - and I'd still be an unfit blob. Or...even if I didn't do it, I'd still train with you. Or something.

John H. D. Watson said...

You are...a very odd man

Ha, you're just getting this now? But I think the internet would agree with me that you look good in nearly anything.

I'd love it if you'd train with me. :) It's in April...hm. That's soon.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thankfully the internet will never see me in pink aussiebums and glasses. Or at least, not knowingly.

I don't know how it works, but I think you have to apply quite a long way in advance. It's always over-subscribed. Maybe you should sign up for a half marathon first anyway. Or something like that. Or you might just kill me.

John H. D. Watson said...

That's probably a better idea, yeah. I don't want to kill either of us.

Oh and speaking of killing, I have the first physio appointment Wednesday.

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't kill either of us, don't let the physio kill you, don't kill your physio.

I don't want you to be a suspect again. Another DI might try to arrest you. Then I'd get all protective. It would be a messy circle of death and mayhem. Sherlock would love it.

Do I need to...do anything? Come with you? Drop you off? Collect you? Cook you dinner that night? Anything?

Sherlock said...

What sort of mill is it? It isn't a windmill. And what's eggs benedict can I have some AND lemon meringue pie.

Mummy and I went to see Mycroft today and we DID play frisbee in the park with the dogs and Anthea and had cake and milkshake.

Bronwyn said...

Be prepared for Join to be one hurting, cranky cowpoke. That's what you'll need to do, Greg.
Happy Valentines!
Bronwyn

Anonymous said...

Greg, John - Both of you are lovely and adorable together. I know that I say that frequently, but it's true.

Sherlock - It sounds like you had a wonderful time with your Mum and Mycroft this weekend!

~A from NW

John H. D. Watson said...

L - yeah, pretty much what Bronwyn said, although I deny poking any cows.

Sherlock - Cake AND milkshake? Wow, lucky you! I'm glad you got to see Mycroft. Did your mum enjoy the frisbee?

Sherlock said...

She didn't play much she mainly talked to Anthea but she did a bit and it was fun but she says I have to go to bed at 9pm! And I've told her I DON'T but she says it's school and that's not fair! But Mycroft said he'd come flying next time because I told him it was brilliant and he should.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hey, Sherlock, be good for your Mum. If you don't want to go to sleep then just have some calm-down time, yeah? Play with the goos quietly, or read in bed.

Mycroft should definitely come with us next time.

And I think this is an old textiles mill. We'll tell you about it when we're home tomorrow, okay, kiddo?

John H. D. Watson said...

If she says you do, then you do. Good night, love, we'll see you tomorrow.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - right. You can poke your Lestallion and leave the cows alone ;) and be as cranky as you want. Just...tell me what to do.

Sherlock said...

THAT'S NOT FAIR

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock, calm down. Maybe ask your Mum if she'll tell you a story?

REReader said...

Or you can read more in your new mummies book.

Greg Lestrade said...

Going to hope the quiet is because he's settled, not because his Mum's confiscated all communication devices.

Poor kid. We miss you - you and Mycroft.

John H. D. Watson said...

I hope that wasn't too difficult for either of them. I kept feeling like I should call, but it would probably have made it worse.

Greg Lestrade said...

I feel like...I don't know, feel like we're making some implication about Mrs H's parenting skills if we do. Besides, not as if we could change anything, I'm not going against her.

It's all just disruption to his routine, though, isn't it. Makes me feel bad for him.

REReader said...

I imagine it would be a bit harder than usual for him to settle after all the excitement. Only to be expected, really.

Anon Without A Name said...

Thankfully the internet will never see me in pink aussiebums and glasses.

Now that's just NOT FAIR. *ahem*

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. Maybe NSY can put out a calendar... a DI GQMF calendar.

Small Hobbit said...

What Nameless said.

And L - I see your public have spoken and that you are guilty as charged.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's entirely fair to me! Take that picture from the other day, paint neon pink shorts on it, grey out the hair...add a load of wrinkles and some more stomach, you've got it!

Danger, you can hush unless you want me to send a photo of you to SuperNanny Weekly for the centrefold. You're a silly deluded man. And I'm very grateful for that fact.

SH - I still maintain you haven't heard all the evidence...

John H. D. Watson said...

Pfft. No more deluded than you are.

Greg Lestrade said...

I still don't even know what GQMF really means! I mean, I know what it stands for....but...what's special about GQ? I don't get it!

I'm completely deluded. I keep thinking some gorgeous bloke has agreed to be my partner and someone's trusted me with two amazing boys and a responsible job. See? Madness.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think it just means you're gorgeous, and quite well dressed, which you certainly were in your pink boxers.

I've got the very same delusion! Amazing.

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade - Google GQ, check out the images, (I'm guessing telling you to ignore the scantily-clad ladies is a tad redundant :-p), and look at all the gorgeous, rather well dressed dudes. They are GQMFs. And I think we've all seen enough pics to know that you're one too.

And if you think we're all mad - and I suspect that you do - then you should at least trust John. He's a doctor, you know.

Greg Lestrade said...

My new boxers are definitely very nice. Most of the time, however, Marks and Sparks provide me with off-the-peg suits, and most other things.

Which isn't to say I don't love a nicely cut suit that's properly tailored. I just never have an opportunity to wear them. Or proper shirts, with a nice French round cuff...or cufflinks. Or lots of nice things. SO I don't think I'm GQ!

We were obviously made for each other...

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - a well dressed bloke (or a scantily clad bloke, of the right type) definitely does a lot more for me than a scantily clad lady.

And some of those suits are nice...but what's the obsession with ties? Ugh. (I know, I know, Mycroft, I'm sorry.)

John H. D. Watson said...

French round cuff... Right. Well, look at it this way, you're more GQ than I am, and if you plan to argue that...remember the Christmas jumper. Which I still genuinely think was quite nice!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure GQ have a knitwear section...

French round cuff...it's a french cuff, but with the corner rounded off. I prefer them over just French cuffs.

Okay, you've got that look again. The one I probably get when you talk about wool types and stuff.

I'm going to drag you to bed and thoroughly celebrate your last pyjama-less night for what could be some time.

Desert Wanderer said...

French round cuff...it's a french cuff, but with the corner rounded off. I prefer them over just French cuffs.

I think that that face that you have a preference speaks for itself... :D

Have a good night, gentlemen.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not saying I wouldn't like to be GQ-ish, DW. Just that I'm not! Police work would trash far too many nice suits.

Don't remember the last time I wore a decent suit.

...actually, I do, but I'd rather not.

Bronwyn said...

Hey Greg, a few years ago three out of five members of my immediate family were in various forms of PT simultaneously and I got pretty good at after care.

I recommend a warm (but not hot) shower. John may be different from my mother, but a bathtub can actually make any residual stiffness worse because it puts pressure on the affected area when a person leans back on it in a tub. Then a mild warming cream (tea tree oil, a capsaicin ointment, etc.) applied with firm, gentle pressure. Don't push or press terribly hard. You just want the muscles to relax and stay warm and loose to minimize pain. If John is up to it and his physio recommends it, help him rotate the joint carefully to help loosen it.

Overall, though, I cannot emphasize enough, don't let him overdo it. If his physio says "don't lift more than two kilos", absolutely don't let him. I had to get after my brother constantly because he was supposed to do exercises twice daily and he kept trying to do them more than that.

And just be aware that he's going to ache - probably rather badly - both immediately after and worse the next day.

Unlike apparently 90% of your readers, I've never been in PT myself, but I've done way more aftercare than I care to admit. Just be patient and be kind - you're very good at that already.

I suppose John can be a Lestallionpoke if that makes him happier than a cowpoke. :P

Good luck, and let me know if I can be of any use.
Bronwyn

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers Bronwyn.

I've been through physio plenty of times myself, but never had anyone at home who wanted to help (or who I wanted to help me) and generally wad an impatient, disobedient patient who did all the wrong things.

Exactly what I don't want John to do ;)

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade - your definition of "a nice suit" and John's/ours might be different. For example, I would classify any suit in which the wearer looks good and/or hot as "a nice suit". Which I would suspect means that all of your suits are "nice".

Just like John's shirts, judging by those pics you posted.

Have a fun night, guys :-)

Desert Wanderer said...

Also, don't think you slipped this one by, DI Sneakypants:

Hollandaise sauce is...well, it's about the easiest sauce in the world to make!

That's a blatant lie, since anything that requires a double boiler and eggs cannot be easier than marinara or alfredo sauce, let alone brown gravy from a packet. So there.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha! To both of you.

There's no point in my arguing on either count, right? Right.

REReader said...

Go back to sleep, L. :)

(See how I assumed you've been asleep there?)

Greg Lestrade said...

I have been!
I'm trying.

REReader said...

Try thinking about something dull and ordinary.

Or wake up John and stop thinking altogether. :)

Desert Wanderer said...

You can argue. I'm interested in your opinion on hollandaise vs. marinara/alfredo sauce. Somehow I suspect you're not exactly a "brown gravy from a packet" kind of guy.

I'm sorry you're not sleeping well.

Piplover said...

The mill looks lovely. I'm glad you two have had such a lovely, relaxing time!

I think Brownyn has the best advise regarding the PT, since everything she mentioned I wish I had had someone to do for me! I hope it isn't too incredibly painful, John.

Greg Lestrade said...

At least I'm not waking up a sweating shaking wide eyed mess now. Just waking up and not getting back to sleep.

DW - there's a time and place for instant gravy! :) I don't have issue with it.

Greg Lestrade said...

(and I don't use a double boiler for hollandaise either... one saucepan, one blender (or hand whisk, if you're energetic) and...well, I'll put it on my blog, okay? But it's not hard!)

REReader said...

"Just waking up" is definitely an improvement. We'll take it! (Did you fall back asleep?)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I did for an hour or so, thanks.

Desert Wanderer said...

Fair enough. Glad to hear you git a little bit more sleep. Looking forward to the recipe, Lestrade!

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope you're all off to sleep too :)

I try not to get pointlessly annoyed now when I wake up. Just be calmly accepting. Especially days like today. We're not up and dressed yet!

Small Hobbit said...

We're not up and dressed yet
There's no need to rub it in!

Anyway, hope you both enjoy your day and have a safe journey back. Whose turn is it to drive?

And to the rest of you, Happy Monday!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd say my turn to drive. We'll doubtless have a very polite argument about it.

Probably end up agreeing to do half each.

But as Sherlock's mum took the booster seat, I'm not sure Danger will be able to see over the steering wheel ;)

Desert Wanderer said...

I hope he tackled you for that. :P

"Calmly accepting" is probably better in the long run for your blood preessuer. Getting there, on the other hand...

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - the only reason I say such things is the retaliation!

And yeah. Easier when you know you don't need to be up in the morning. I try to match my breathing to John's and...well, think about him, really. Tends to keep dark thoughts at bay.

Desert Wanderer said...

Like I said before...DI Sneakypants.

How wonderful that you have Doc is a comforrt, even when he's not trying. It's like Valentine's Day everyday with you two.

Captcha says "guarantee"

REReader said...

Do you still have some time yet before you have to head back?

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe an hour or so, if we push it...not long.

DW - sickening, isn't it? :) but seriously, there's nothing Icould ever do to truly express to him just how much he means to me. I don't think I ever really understood people who said they were best friends with their partners, as well as lovers, until now.

Darren said...

Hey Greg, I want to know when you turned into a whizz in the kitchen! I don't think I ever got more than half your take away back in the day.

Whoever asked if he turned me straight, it's true! He did!

No, seriously, I was definitely bisexual. I just wanted different things from life to Greg, at the time. I wanted to settle down, and he was still far too busy enjoying everything the city had to offer. A truth we both acknowledged, and we parted on really the best of terms. I found what I was looking for, and I'm really glad, after a few false starts, that he's managed the same.

John, Joanna, my wife, says you should definitely get Greg to send the details of the mill to us. Look what you've got me into! You two are going to make it very difficult to seem like a romantic bloke, you know, with all the love sloshing about these websites.

My best to both of you.
Darren

Greg Lestrade said...

Who votes.it's time to stop for coffee and me to drive after?

REReader said...

I don't think I ever really understood people who said they were best friends with their partners, as well as lovers, until now.

I'm torn between getting soppy (sorry, Sherlock!) and being all hopeful that I'll find that myself someday... :)

I know you two are sorry to be ending your idyll (which is not meant sarcastically!), but Sherlock will be so glad to see you. Which might equally likely show itself in glee over you being back or sulking over you being gone...ah, family life.

Sherlock said...

When will you be home? I'm making biscuits with Mrs Hudson and some of them are even hearts with pink icing because she said it would be nice but then I made ones that are liver shapes and kidneys too and she wouldn't let me do intestines and I've iced them really RED.

REReader said...

Those sound like amazing biscuits, Sherlock! Are the hearts normal heart-shaped or anatomically correct heart-shaped?

I went to a birthday party for my niece and nephew and father (because they all have their birthdays this week) yesterday, and we had cupcakes with pink glaze on top, only it was really strawberry flavored, instead of pink flavored.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - very soon! Can't wait to see your biscuits and hear about your weekend. We missed you. Do you know what you want for dinner?

Sherlock said...

Eggs Benedict! And Mrs Hudson says you can make meringue and put it on ICE CREAM and put it in the oven and cook it so that too.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ice cream in the oven?

REReader said...

I believe Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson are referring to Baked Alaska.

Sherlock said...

YES!

John H. D. Watson said...

Doesn't that involve lighting things on fire? You'll have to ask Lestrade.

Sherlock said...

You ask! He's right there with you unless you left him behind because he called you short. Tell him I said pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase

REReader said...

This recipe doesn't involve a blowtorch--but it requires ice cream of a mold, which means softening time plus 8 hours of refreezing. Or to put it another way: Prep time=20 min.; cook time=40 min.; ready in=eleven hours. (I think it could take longer, because you have to bake and cool a cake, too.)

REReader said...

IN a mold, not of a mold. Frozen in a mold.

John H. D. Watson said...

If I was going to leave him behind for calling me short, he'd still be back in Brighton or somewhere.

He agrees with RR that baked Alaska is a bit elaborate for tonight, and anyway, we have your delicious biscuits. Same for eggs benedict. Next week, when Mycroft's home, maybe.

Think of something simpler for tonight, please.

REReader said...

Hey! Don't put it on me--I can't help how long it takes ice cream to thaw and refreeze in a way that it doesn't end up all grainy and icy and horrid!

Good point about the biscuits, though. How can you not want to have liver and kidney biscuits? (Really red ones, too. I like red frosting. :))

Sherlock said...

But Lestrade said the sauce was easy!

I don't want anything else. Except maybe pizza.

John H. D. Watson said...

Pizza's all right. We can have salad with it.

Sherlock said...

Or maybe fish. Or pork.

Where are you? Mrs Hudson says it's rush hour but why does that make everyone so SLOW. It should be called slow hour.

John H. D. Watson said...

Everyone rushing to get home at the same time makes it slow. I think we're only about ten minutes away now though.

Anonymous said...

Sherlock - The rush means that everyone is "rushing" to get home, so they're all in their cars, on the Tube, and so on, and then they all get stuck on the way home. It's kind of like the reason why Mrs. T probably asks you to line up to go out the door for recess because if she didn't, everyone in your class would try to run out the door at the same time and you'd all get stuck trying to go out to have fun.

John, Greg - I hope the traffic isn't too infuriating. I'm so happy you both had a lovely weekend with each other. :)

~A from NW

KHolly said...

Sherlock, you are absolutely right though, it should be called slow hour.

I'm not sure this works with what you call your highways, but in the US we have a joke sort of where people will ask, why do you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway? But my answer is always have you been on the parkway at rush hour? There's not a lot of driving going on.

REReader said...

(And I bet you came in for your share of hugging, too--or you will shortly.)

Greg Lestrade said...

I did. Sherlock demanded to be passed on without his feet touching the floor, so we had a group hug, which left the limpet on me, not John. It's really lovely that he missed us. Although you'd think it was a week we'd been apart, not 2 days!

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm reliably informed that two days is FOREVER when you're six.

REReader said...

A period of two non-routine days is longer than an ordinary week when you're measuring how long someone is gone, especially if you're six.

(It really is lovely. :))

REReader said...

Ha! What I said. :D

REReader said...

Oh, I dunno--you seem to get really good results with yours...

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't need them. I know how to find my way around your body. ;)

At least your brain would only corrupt RR a bit, not have her running screaming into the street tearing at her head trying to purge everything smutty from her mind! :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Hmm. Little do you know...

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, okay, it probably would. But for different reasons than mine would!

I like your brain just where it is. It suits you there.
