sneezles

I'd meant to write Greg the Florist today, but got a call from Mrs N instead, telling me to come and fetch Sherlock. He's not too ill - at least there's no vomiting (yet) - just quiet, cranky, and miserable, poor kid. And then L came home with a headache, and he and Sherlock napped on the couch in between demanding orange juice (Sherlock) and insisting he was fine (Lestrade). Mrs H came up and force fed everyone tea, and then I was putting Sherlock to bed, and...the day has gone very quickly.

-

Sneezles
A.A. Milne

Christopher Robin
Had wheezles
And sneezles,
They bundled him
Into
His bed.
They gave him what goes
With a cold in the nose,
And some more for a cold
In the head.
They wondered
If wheezles
Could turn
Into measles,
If sneezles
Would turn
Into mumps;
They examined his chest
For a rash,
And the rest
Of his body for swellings and lumps.
They sent for some doctors
In sneezles
And wheezles
To tell them what ought
To be done.
All sorts and conditions
Of famous physicians
Came hurrying round
At a run.
They all made a note
Of the state of his throat,
They asked if he suffered from thirst;
They asked if the sneezles
Came after the wheezles,
Or if the first sneezle
Came first.
They said, "If you teazle
A sneezle
Or wheezle,
A measle
May easily grow.
But humour or pleazle
The wheezle
Or sneezle,
The measle
Will certainly go."
They expounded the reazles
For sneezles
And wheezles,
The manner of measles
When new.
They said "If he freezles
In draughts and in breezles,
Then PHTHEEZLES
May even ensue."

Christopher Robin
Got up in the morning,
The sneezles had vanished away.
And the look in his eye
Seemed to say to the sky,
"Now, how to amuse them to-day?"

Promise I have neither sneezles or wheezles.

Just headachezles.

Love you. You're brilliant, as always.

REReader said...

I LOVE that poem! (My father would recite it--with all sorts of dramatic emphasis--every time one of us got sick. :))

Here's hoping both sufferers wake all Christopher Robin-like tomorrow.

John H. D. Watson said...

RR - thanks.

L - I love you too. Now get in bed!

Greg Lestrade said...

painkillers, water, then bed. Promise, Doc.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll join you in all of that I think.

Greg Lestrade said...

You feeling rough too?

John H. D. Watson said...

Just a bit.

pandabob said...

Oh no :-(

sleep well guys.

Greg Lestrade said...

then I'll definitely get up if Sherlock needs anything. I'm sure I'm mainly better by now.

John H. D. Watson said...

We'll see.

Anonymous said...

I was afraid of that. Hope Mrs H doesn't get it too. Feel better everyone.

Oh, dear. I hope you all feel better soon.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers.... I shall temp fate by saying so far, Sherlock is sleeping soundly. As is John.

REReader said...

I'm sorry you're not, though. :( I hope you're feeling better, at least.

A from NW said...

Eep! I hope that those of you who are healthy stay healthy, and if you must become ill, that it's not too horrible and goes away quickly.

...Also, Greg, John, what's your stance on virus-killing bunnies? Yes, no? (Also, if they're considered illegal in the UK, pretend I said nothing ;D)

All - So I had an indirect conversation with my boss about everything, including my plans to leave as soon as I find a new position and/or her replacement is settled in (if there is one). She thought it was a good idea. It was...comforting, in the sense that she thought I would do fine, even as she apologized for leaving me in a tight spot.

So thank you, everyone, for your support. Hopefully, I'll be the bringer of happy news very, very soon. :)

Small Hobbit said...

A - glad to hear you were able to have that conversation with your boss and that she made you feel a bit more positive. We're all rooting for you.

J/L/S (sounds a bit like a boy band) how are the sneezles, wheezles, achiles and painyles this morning?

Anon Without A Name said...

AfNW - I'm glad you had a good conversation with your soon-to-be-ex-boss. Hopefully the time between her going and you finding another job will be tolerable. BTW - what's a virus-killing bunny?

Guys, hope you're all feeling better this morning.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm glad you talked to someone, A.

Still got a headache.

Don't tell John.

pandabob said...

By which I'm guessing you mean you're at work Greg?

Hows Sherlock? and hows John?

AfNW - I'm glad you feel more positive after talking to your boss.

Greg Lestrade said...

They both seemed a bit subdued. sherlock got in with us this morning, instead of dragging me out.

Not sure if he went to school - I sort of hope so, for John's sake, but not if he wasn't up to it.

And yeah, I'm at work. Far too much to do.

pandabob said...

I'm sure John and Sherlock will have come to the best conclusion for both of them about school, its never easy to know what to do.

Lots to do at work would only play on your mind I guess so look after yourself best you can and I hope you get lots done :-)

My poor boss doesn't know if she should yell at me for sharing when I turnup sick or be grateful we arrn't shortstaffed again. Going in late today but I'm going.

I don't like it when people cone in contagious, but I'm fairly happy a headache isn't catching.

I hope John and Sherlock - if he's at home - are warm cuddled on the soda or in bed, both resting. I'm sure Mrs H will keep everyone fed.

pandabob said...

I'm beginning to feel quite lazy compared to you hardworking heroes :-(

Greg Lestrade said...

Well I'm not hardworking, just rudging through a million papers to go to various places, authorising teams to go for warrants, checking up on people. It's all office based and all of me would rather be asleep.

REReader said...

Could take some of it home? Or maybe get through enough that you could leave early?

(I hope your head stop attacking you, at least.)

John, I hope you and Sherlock are feeling better.

Anonymous said...

When everyone in the house has the headache it's contagious.

pandabob said...

it's weird Greg, I'd never consider John lazy, ever, but I regularly think that I am!

I hope you get to be asleep soon :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Anon - i really don't think migraines are in the least contagious, and my headache today is just the dregs of that yesterday. I don't think either Sherlock or John had a migraine, so yeah, potentially if they've got any other symptoms, it could be something else that they have.

RR - it all involves being here, really.

John H. D. Watson said...

Do you want lunch or anything, or is food still unappealing? Sherlock's asleep and Mrs H says she'll stay with him if I want to sneak out for a bit.

Greg Lestrade said...

I ate some soup. Be nice to see you, you feeling okay? Don't come out in the cold and wet if you're not well.

John H. D. Watson said...

Not great, but not really terrible. I just want a hug, mainly, and Mrs H is no substitute for you. Be there in a bit.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry for being possibly the most boring person ever - my mind was just on that feedback from the cps. I watched as your eyes glazed over. I suppose I was essentially speaking in an unbreakable code of acronyms, as far as you were concerned.

But I hope the hug made up for it.

And sometimes I think you just like visiting me during work to see me in a suit... you were fondling my cuffs (round barrel, if anyone cares.)

Anonymous said...

Sorry to see y'all are all still feeling off. If not contagious, environmental, anon? Maybe there was a plague of headaches among the people who climbed the monument this weekend? But I'm glad it seems to be minor, if you can manage work, L, and lunch, J. I hope Sherlock's feeling better soon.

I'm a bit better too, but not looking forward with any glee to doing the storytelling I promised to do tonight. Ah, well.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - it's okay, I happy to just sit there and listen. Tired enough that I probably would've looked glazed over regardless of the topic of conversation.

You do look very nice in a suit.

A from NW said...

Greg, John - I do hope that everyone in the household manages to sleep soundly through the night. Goodness knows that I'm about ready to crawl back into bed myself and not come out for the next five months.

Anon Without a Name - A virus-killing bunny is an invisible bunny that goes around with an always-steaming bowl of delicious chicken soup, killing viruses and giving cuddles. My friends and I tend to "give" each other these bunnies during the winter (usually in apology for passing along a cold or flu...)

~A from NW (who needs to work on being clearly unamused in Mandarin...)

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - I forget that being on the bike means you don't get to see me suited and booted unless you come to the yard. I miss you kissing me goodbye in the morning and then straightening my labels and collar like you always used to!

pandabob said...

You could go back to the tradition of dressing for dinner Greg ;-)

Have you got lots done? or at least some of what you wanted to done? not long until escape now I hope.

Anonymous said...

How do you get your suits to work if you don't wear them?

Greg Lestrade said...

Folded neatly in a bag - either on my back or over the tank.

Although a few just live at work now, and I get them dry cleaned and bring them straight back. Don't need them at home.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, straightening your leather jacket just doesn't give the same effect...

REReader said...

Leather jackets have other virtues. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

not quite the same, no. Maybe I should buy one with lapels... halfway there ;)

Sherlock said...

I'm getting a leather jacket for Christmas!

pandabob said...

you are Sherlock, you'll look amazing in it I'm sure :-)

How are you feeling?

Greg Lestrade said...

You are if you get a good school report! It's not guaranteed yet. Got to keep working hard, kiddo.

REReader said...

Cool! (Yes, I think I remember you telling us that your mum said you'd get a leather jacket for Christmas if she got a good report from your teacher, which shouldn't be a problem for you at all. :))

Are you feeling a bit better now?

Unknown said...

You know, I think that promising things in return for good grades is a good idea. Ever since my mom told me that if I got four concecutive As I'd get the GoldenEye 007 Wii game, my grades have been exponentially better.

Greg Lestrade said...

well, he doesn't really get grades, yet, but as long as his behaviour's good, and Mrs N says he's been trying hard then I imagine he'll be a biker boy come Christmas. ;)

Sherlock said...

I'm a bit better but I would be even better if I ate apple pie.

pandabob said...

I'm glad you're feeling better Sherlock. Good luck with the apple pie idea ;-)

REReader said...

Better is very good!

I would be even better if I ate apple pie.

Well, now, that would depend what kind of bug you've got. I'm sure John know the answer to that. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

well, you might have to wait to be 'even better' until tomorrow, then. Pie, sadly, does not appear magically.

Anon Without A Name said...

So if Lestrade was "well" enough to work today, and Sherlock's feeling better enough that he wants apple pie... how's John doing?

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm fine. Just a little tired.

Sherlock said...

You would be less tired if Lestrade made you pie.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think I could eat pie right now, Sherlock.

Sherlock said...

Can I have yours then?

REReader said...

Sherlock, are you good at math? Because I've been trying to figure this out, and I don't think I understand it--it's the math behind a card trick: http://youtu.be/l7lP9y7Bb5g

(I don't think it has anything to do with either pie or pi.)

Anon Without A Name said...

Sherlock, it's possible that John needs a nice quiet cuddle more than he needs pie right now? I don't suppose Lestrade's feeling much like making a pie this evening either; I think he might like a nice quiet cuddle too.

John - ah yes, "fine", a wonderful word to cover a multitude of conditions. I hope you have a restful evening.

John H. D. Watson said...

No, because he's not making pie tonight. Unless pie does appear magically, in which case, you still can't have mine, because it's almost bedtime for little boys who were too ill for school today.

Sherlock said...

It's mathS.

I don't need to go to bed early because I slept when you were out having hugs.

John H. D. Watson said...

I wouldn't bet on that if I were you. Especially considering that enormous yawn just now.

pandabob said...

I thought you might like this Sherlock.

Sleep well :-)

REReader said...

In the UK, it's mathS. In the US, it's math (no s). I am in the US, so I say math.

Did you understand the math/maths in that video? Or is that something that has to wait for tomorrow? (Or it might not interest you, in which case it doesn't matter either way.)

(And fighting off an illness takes a lot out of your body and makes you tired even if it seems like you weren't doing anything.)

Small Hobbit said...

I understood that anonybob - does that mean I can have pie tomorrow?

Sherlock said...

But the US is WRONG because you just are and miss out loads of letters that should be in words to make them proper.

I didn't look because John made me put my pyjamas on and i have to go to bed except I'm NOT TIRED but Mrs Hudson gave me a book about cooking and old things like paying servants and I can read.

pandabob said...

if you make one SH you can have one or if you want to jump on a train I'll make you one, that goes for anyone else who understands as well :-)

Anon Without A Name said...

Sherlock - different isn't wrong, sweetheart. I hope the book's interesting, and the you get a good rest. Sleep tight :-)

Anonybob: I would so take you up on that if I didn't have to work tomorrow :-p

pandabob said...

I'm sorry you're cross Sherlock but you can look tomorrow and sleep WILL make you feel better.

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless, RR - I'm fairly certain that everything that doesn't come out of Sherlock's mouth is 'wrong' - I certainly am! ;)

Sherlock has gone to bed with Mrs Beeton's book of household management. I....well, I shall be interested to see what effect this has.

I imagine she'll be 'wrong' about a great many things... ;)

REReader said...

Well, Sherlock, it would be wrong in the UK, but it's not wrong here. It's just a different system, like using Linux code in a Windows system.

Enjoy your book, and maybe you'll feel like figuring out the mathematical card trick tomorrow. I hope you'll be feeling all the way well by morning!

REReader said...

Nameless, RR - I'm fairly certain that everything that doesn't come out of Sherlock's mouth is 'wrong'

It's all fine, L. :) (I've "translated" enough books from UK spellings to US spellings to find the whole thing rather annoying at times myself!)

I imagine she'll be 'wrong' about a great many things... ;)

Oh, yes--even with the information available to her at the time of writing, she was wrong about a great many things! :D

A from NW said...

Sherlock, dear, Queen's/King's English and American English are not exactly the same, just like Spanish Spanish and Mexican Spanish are not the same. It doesn't mean that anyone's wrong, just means the languages are different.

Languages change over time, and while a long time ago (while the U.S. were still colonies), American English and King's English might have been the same, it's been over two centuries of growth and change. That's why here in the U.S. we talk about apartments, sidewalks, cell phones, and math, whereas you in the U.K. say flats, pavements, mobiles, and maths. It can cause a little bit of confusion, but I find the differences to be more entertaining than anything else.

As long as everyone gets what's going on, then whether or not everything is "proper" is more or less optional. That's why there's the common saying that the U.S. and the U.K. are separated by a common language.

Now, those who are ill should be abed, even if they don't feel tired. Being all nice and cozy on a winter's night is a lovely feeling, isn't it?

~A from NW (Is exhaustion contagious?)

Greg Lestrade said...

There's a whole chapter called 'The Doctor'. I could update that... ;)

Still, I imagine he'll find it fairly entertaining for a bit. And pick and choose the bits that will be useful for him to attempt to insist upon.

REReader said...

And it has the side benefit of being written in less-than-scintillating prose. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - stop moving so mch and let me lean on you.

Greg Lestrade said...

...breathing, having a pulse...moving...

Just doing my daily dose of blog post, then I'll become entirely inanimate, okay?

John H. D. Watson said...

Okay. You can still breathe and have a pulse though, don't mind that.

Small Hobbit said...

Anonybob, if I wasn't going to London tomorrow I'd be on my way.

Greg Lestrade said...

okay. I'll try to have a pulse quietly.

am I allowed to respond to comments? Or is that sort of gratuitous muscle-use too much? :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Only if you get me tea first.

Greg Lestrade said...

oooh, right, yes, tea-related movement is a-okay, of course. I'm getting the picture.

Trade you for a neck rub? Ever since my headache feel like my neck's made of a steel bar.

John H. D. Watson said...

If you take your shirt off, I can do your back too.

Greg Lestrade said...

so no moving except for stripping and getting tea... I like your priorities, Doc.

REReader said...

First things first. ;)
