giant jammy dodgers

Sherlock left me with strict instructions not to even think about eating any while he was at school today. He also took in pictures to show his classmates. Murray was over earlier and I had to divert him with a walk or there would've been none left.

...Sorry, guys. I just don't seem to have any words today. I've been looking at this screen forever, and this is all there is.

Sometimes, all you need is a giant jammy dodger.

I'm glad your day is going well, though, and that you got to spend time with Murray.

Sometimes my words won't come because I'm enjoying being happy. I hope that's the case for you. I voted "other" because I'm not entirely certain what a Jaffa cake is, and I don't like shortbread enough to justify it's gigantification. Oatmeal raisin cookies, however...

...Sorry, guys. I just don't seem to have any words today.

It's being distracted by uneaten giant jammy dodgers, that's what it is... :)

REReader said...

Oh, and I like the new page design--very clean and fresh looking!

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad you've seen Murray.

You okay? Want me to ring? Sorry I'm out on a scene or I'd love to have met up.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I know, it's all right.

Yeah, I'm okay. Just feel...unsettled or something. I don't know. Can't put my finger on it.

Sherlock wants to know if someone's dead and also if we can have cheesy pasta tonight? I assume the questions are unrelated.

Everyone who's voted for something else giant - what giant thing do you want?

REReader said...

Something with a creamy middle--a giant eclair would be good!

(I'm sorry you're feeling off-center today, John.)

rsf said...

Giant checkerboard cookies, maybe with cookie chess pieces?

I hope your balance is restored soon -- although it might take a couple more shifts of your other job before you figure out how to manage the occasional sleep disruptions. I always hate being in between the first and second iterations of something I know is going to turn into a routine. I feel like I know what I've gotten into, but I don't feel like I know what I'm doing yet.

I like the new design too. And I'm hungry for jammy dodgers now, which is going to be a problem as I only know of one place I can buy them around here...

Greg Lestrade said...

Not dead, no. But the docs at A&E have told us not to hold out much hope.

We can have pasta in sage and butter sauce. With salad.

Sherlock said...

We can get sage from the allotment!

What happened to him? Do you know who did it yet? John your blog should have more colours, mine would have lots if I had one.

pandabob said...

sorry you're feeling less than wonderful in the words department John, I hope giant jammy dodgers help and if not that pasta does :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't know exactly yet, but we've got some leads, kiddo

Small Hobbit said...

I really wanted to vote for both giant jammy dodgers and giant Jaffa cakes and giant everything else.

Greg Lestrade said...

I voted for 'something else'.

I'd like a giant mango. I'd live in it. Greg and the Giant Mango.

Sticky, and it'd go bad too soon...but...

A giant butterfly bun might be quite fun, too.

Kestrel337 said...

Cinnamon rolls. With orangey icing. Or caramel pecan rolls.

Hope you can find your balance soon. It's not fun to feel that way.

The new design is wonderful, although it does make me think of mermaids...*wanders off to craft room*

Anon Without A Name said...

I'm with SH - I feel constrained by having to choose.

Lestrade - I misread that as "a giant butterfly bum".

John - sorry to hear you're feeling out of sorts. I know it gets said a lot, but it's OK to not say anything, or to not blog, if you don't feel like it. It's your space, you're not out blog monkey... (I like the new blog layout, BTW, although the text is quite... big)

REReader said...

John your blog should have more colours, mine would have lots if I had one.

Colors are wonderful! But there is this--a neutral background like gray makes the colors in pictures (and things like that) stand out much more, which can also be good. :)

"Greg and the Giant Mango"....someone should write a book! :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I like the grey and blue...my favourite colours. But it is a bit...plain. And the text is rather big! (Looks fine on my mobile, but now I'm back at the office...)

Anyway, on the way home, sorry Sherlock, John - at least dinner will be quick!

REReader said...

I know I'm in the minority, but my post-cataract-surgery/pre-new glasses eyes are VERY VERY VERY grateful for the large type!

Anonymous said...

If I didn't have the third option I would have gone for Jammy Dodgers because I always feel that Jaffa Cakes would be so much better without the 'smashing orangey bit in the centre'.

Sometimes words just won't come especially when things are changing a lot. Nameless is right you're under no obligation.

Lancs. Anon

Piplover said...

A giant peanut butter cup. One that's just humongous.

Sorry you're feeling out of sorts, John. Hope things can settle down for you soon.

John H. D. Watson said...

Lancs Anon - I do sometimes think they'd be better with raspberry jam.

Pip - how humongous?

L - it looks enormous on one computer I've seen it on and normal on the other. Frustrating.

Greg Lestrade said...

Pip - I think our next cookery experiment will be chocolate biscuits with peanut butter and caramel sandwiched between them. Not quite a giant peanut butter cup, but maybe it'd do?

It looks enormous on mine. But it means I can read it without my glasses ;)

Lancs. - Nah, Jaffa Cakes are perfect! Except....well, they could be more of everything. Especially dark chocolate.

REReader said...

I those chocolate-peanut butter-caramel biscuits come out well pleeeeeeeeease share the recipe!

John H. D. Watson said...

SH - I understand the impulse. And maybe that's the end result of any poll about giant food - all of it should be giant.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I am now very much looking forward to the next cookery experiment.

And am also a bit worried I might need reading glasses. This is size is quite a lot easier to read.

Greg Lestrade said...

Tripe should not be giant. It shouldn't even be.

Whelks can stay the size they are too. And jellied eels. No need for them to get any larger.

Greg Lestrade said...

We'd make a right pair, sitting up in bed, reading glasses on, peering at paperwork...

John H. D. Watson said...

Could happen...

I take your point about jellied eels. Wouldn't mind giant pasta though.

rsf said...

The font was big the first time I looked at it, and smaller the second time. But I like the look anyway.

I've heard about jellied eels, but never seen them. Are they tasty?

Readaholic said...

I also vote for a giant eclair! I love custard.
I feel like I have been deprived since I haven't had a jammy dodger or a jaffa cake.

Piplover said...

I can't wait to find out how your next cooking experiment turns out. In my world, there can never too much chocolate or peanut butter, and the two combined- Yuuummm!

As for how humongous...

At least the size of my head. At least, though larger would be better!

Readaholic said...

Pip, did you happen to write a story called "Soldier's Heart"?

Piplover said...

Hi, um, yes, that was me. *Blushes*

Readaholic said...

I have been wondering for a while!
It's my favorite Canon story on Archive! :D
Was that actually what they used to call PTSD back then?

Piplover said...

Thank you so much!

Yeah, it began in the Civil War, when soldiers would report troubles with breathing and chest pain. Doctors who examined them couldn't find anything physically wrong with them, so they started to label it Soldier's Heart. From there it progressed into shell shock, and now it's PTSD.

Readaholic said...

You are most welcome! It seems to me that Canon would be much harder to write than the modern version, because of the historical attitudes and mannerisms of the Victorian age. Do you feel that way?

Neat!

Piplover said...

Actually, sometimes I find it easier. There was a fluid rhythm to the speech, and I'm fascinated by history, that's what I majored in, so I love researching. Plus, I love the Canon characters, so it's like writing an old friend.

Readaholic said...

That's quite interesting. I do like Canon better, partly because I have been reading it over and over since middle school.
It makes me feel a bit old (even though I just graduated from college!) that I remember reading and rereading all of the Canon fanfics on the internet before the modern series came out. Canon was all there was, and there couldn't have been more than 100 H/W stories out there.
And now look at all of it!! Lovely!
And that such things as this can come from it? Amazing. I can hardly believe that people can be so dedicated and brilliant.

pandabob said...

Hands up who else had a dream about being chased by a giant, person eating jaffa cake last night?

You two are bad for my sleep patterns you know ;-)

have a good day guys :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I dreamt I could get my new bike to work because it was all voice controlled and I didn't speak the right language.

pandabob said...

That sounds scarier than mine ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Nothing new, not knowing what to say to make things work.

pandabob said...

Oh Greg that sounds so sad :-( hope you're ok.

rsf said...

I pursued jammy dodgers in my sleep. The store where I used to get them is gone. I don't suppose any of your giant jammy dodgers are still available? Or a recipe?

Small Hobbit said...

L - Maybe you should have bought a Ducati?

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob, just had a shitty phonecall with Mum. I'm fine.

pandabob said...

the curse of the conversation with mother I see!

I'm glad you're fine :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - sorry, love. I hope you're doing all right. Tell me if there's anything I can do?

Greg Lestrade said...

Tell her I'm not the enemy?

I don't know.

John H. D. Watson said...

I could try. Don't know if she'd listen.

Greg Lestrade said...

Probably not. She hung up on me and wouldn't answer again.

John H. D. Watson said...

What happened? If you don't mind talking about it.

Greg Lestrade said...

She sounded like she was slurring. So nowadays that might not be drink, right? She could have had another stroke. So I asked if anyone had been in to see her, or if they were due, and how she was feeling. She just went off on one about me spying on her, not trusting her, all that. Then she said she knew we wished she'd died and hung up.

I called a neighbour to go round, and Rach is too.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sorry, love. That's... Well, unfair of her, obviously. And very hard on you.

Greg Lestrade said...

At least no ones called back, so it probably was drink, nothing serious.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. From what she said, it sounds like she was feeling guilty about it too, maybe.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I thought that.

And Rach invited us to Jess's birthday party if we can make it.

John H. D. Watson said...

That sounds nice. When is it?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, to be honest, Jess asked us. Rach had to translate though...

As a dutiful uncle I should know when her birthday is, shouldn't I? She said the weekend right after it... I think she was born on July the 18th? I have been promised jelly and ice cream, but told we have to take baked goods in return.

Sherlock said...

Why did she have to translate? What language does Jess speak? Can we take a big cake and biscuits and cupcakes?

Greg Lestrade said...

She speaks baby language - squeals and noises and babbling. But she could say her first word any time now really.

We can take lots of nice things, yeah.

John H. D. Watson said...

Perhaps a giant custard cream?

Greg Lestrade said...

I think a big birthday cake and some little bites will be fine. No super sized food for a 1year old!

Just leaving....soon. Ish. Anything you two need?

Sherlock said...

Purple carrots or cauliflower except will you pick me up first so I can come with you to get it? please

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll come and fetch you, kiddo.

You had a good day at school? Chickens doing anything interesting? Tadpoles all swimming about like crazy yet?

Sherlock said...

Yes the chickens are supposed to be outside now but we had the door open at lunch and they came in and we tried to feed them sandwich bits until Mrs N chased them all out again! It was funny. And we have tadpoles and LOADS of bugs and I brought a leaf to show you.

Sherlock said...

We got you a present and we're coming home and I got kumquats!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but I here they can cure it now!

John H. D. Watson said...

Kumquats and a present? Exciting.

Sherlock said...

AND you can have kumquats if I don't like them.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, he doesn't know how lucky he is, does he, Sherlock? Potential unwanted fruit!

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. What if you do like them? Can I still have one?

My present is better than kumquats by the way - chili chocolate truffles! Thank you, both of you. It was very thoughtful. And delicious. Not that I'd eat chocolate before dinner. Bad example, etc.

REReader said...

They are a very pretty color, kumquats are. :)

Also yay for tadpoles and bugs and classroom-invading chicks! Any baby newts yet?

REReader said...

(ONE wouldn't hurt anything, John! Isn't that the rule? :D)

Sherlock said...

Mine are just orange like an orange. What colour are yours?

No you can't have them if I like them because then they're mine. If you wanted some you should have said when Lestrade asked. He can have one because when I was putting them in the bag he asked if he could have one so I put in one more than I wanted you could share half of his.

Greg Lestrade said...

I will share my one kumquat with you, my lover. :)

REReader said...

All the ones I've seen around here are also orange, but a very strong, rich orange, a stronger color than the oranges we get.

How many did you get all together, then?

pandabob said...

I will share my one kumquat with you

Now that's love if ever I saw it ;-)

did you like the kumquats Sherlock?

rsf said...

Did anything unusual happen while you were shopping?

I've never had a kumquat. I should fix that.
