indeterminate berries

Black raspberries? Blackberries? Someone's else's patch at the allotment. Sherlock is mad with jealousy because our pink blueberry bush has not yet formed one visible berry. We thought they were starting, but they haven't got anywhere and it's been weeks.

I've been watching a lot of tennis. I was shocked when Rafa went out, of course, and...less shocked today when Federer went out. I wasn't expecting him to lose the match, but I suppose I was expecting something like this, at some point before the quarters. It's too bad. I hope it improves Murray's chances.

I've been thinking a lot about work on Saturday night. The last man I saw was detained under the Mental Health Act, and shouldn't really have been there at all. But he was a bit drunk and...not violent exactly, but shouting, making gestures that could've been interpreted as threatening, which is why he was brought in. And why it was so hard to find anywhere for him to go.

The hospitals didn't want him because he wasn't an emergency and was 'potentially violent' (I really don't think he was). No crisis team available. It was about two solid hours on the phone before I found someone who'd take him, and he would've spent the night in a cell otherwise, not getting the help he needed, and he hadn't done anything wrong. He was more scared than anything else. There ought to be a better way.

That's rough, John. He's lucky he had you fighting for him.

Greg Lestrade said...

There really should. No one who needs help from medical experts should be stuck in a cell being cared for by a desk sarge.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. And they were doing their best, but...it's just not an appropriate environment.

Do I get to mention Thatcher's "care in the community" legacy now?

(Sorry you had a rough night, John; that must be so frustrating to deal with)

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - you can mention it all you like! Preferably to various voters and MPs ;)

And with todays announcements of less money for the police - budgets and pay - and with the NHS being shoved out the back door, doesn't the future look rosy?

Danger - no, it isn't. But everyone knows the police are the end of the road - when everyone else has refused to take responsibility, we have to. I mean...well, it's only just better than leaving people to it. But at least in a nick there's warmth and food and someone to watch them.

John H. D. Watson said...

Can't argue with that.

REReader said...

Geez, L, what does it take for those in power to take a look and see that austerity has made things worse in every single instance?!?

Greg Lestrade said...

well...you can :) but let's not.

Doesn't help some poor person who's scared and needs a friendly face when all they get is a harassed PC and a grumpy overworked custody sergeant.

He was lucky to have a lovely caring Doc on the case.

The lack of appropriate places for people in mental difficulties is a problem here, too. A family friend is a judge and she's eloquent (and bitter) about the problem. But all of the asylums (and their large grounds) have been sold off, and not enough places were ever made or supported in community care. I'm beginning to think that the only solution to having all of the public assets sold off is a constitutional amendment saying that public properties can't be sold, only homesteaded to people who own no other real estate.

Possibly good news?

REReader said...

That sounds like a very good idea, L--but if they're cutting both police and health care budgets, who's supposed to pay the nurses? :/

rsf said...

Yes, it does sound like a good idea. Far better than exacerbating someone's problems by putting them in a cell. I hope they've got the beds at the hospitals!

Greg Lestrade said...

They're not cutting the health budgets, exactly - political suicide to do that!

Just slowly sneaking bits of the NHS out the back door and strangling them to death so we can have a private health care system - that works so well over in the states, right??

I shall reserve judgement. It might work, but it's probably another ill thought out idea that won't quite work because they put neither the knowledge or funds into it, then theyll announce it failed and stop it.

In other news, I have a rainbow painted on my body.

So does John. I'm trying to get Jo to do a unicorn on himtoo ;)

REReader said...

Yeah, if you want to spend the most for the worst results it's definitely the way to go! (Don't get me started...!)

Have fun with the rainbows and unicorns and baby oil... *innocent*

John H. D. Watson said...

I really didn't need a unicorn...

Greg Lestrade said...

You did. It even has a little tennis racket on its bum.

John H. D. Watson said...

So it's not just a unicorn, it's a My Little Pony unicorn? Oh dear...

Greg Lestrade said...

Paint on chest hair hurts when it's stuck and you have to suddenly evade your boyfriend.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't know what you expected when the cutie mark was so clearly your idea!

Greg Lestrade said...

Such a tragedy we had to come and fetch Sherlock before it was removed. I have an urge to think up a spurious reason why I must remove your top, to show the whole park...

But instead I shall hope Mes H will watch Sherlock while we baby oil each other...

John H. D. Watson said...

If my top comes off, I can assure you that yours will too, mister.

Greg Lestrade said...

We'd get a reputation, cavorting about topless.

Never mind my vertical rainbow with gold and silver nipple stars.

John H. D. Watson said...

It is fairly striking.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps Sherlock can tell us how amazing you both look before the baby oil comes out.

Sherlock said...

It's not fair I wanted paint.

REReader said...

Body paint is fun. I expect there will be other chances in the future for you to get painted, Sherlock, even though the times didn't work out today. (I know that doesn't change that you didn't get painted today.)

Maybe you could help with the paint-removal part of the experiment? I'm sure you'd be the best at giving Jo an accurate report.

Greg Lestrade said...

We gave him to Mrs H while we removed it :)

REReader said...

No doubt the most prudent option... ;D

Greg Lestrade said...

Am now scared of asking Danger who we're going to try and see at Wimbledon now Federal icon is out.

Greg Lestrade said...

...federicorn.

REReader said...

Murray?

John H. D. Watson said...

We'll just get grounds passes and see who's playing. I wasn't expecting to get into Centre Court anyway.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right. I don't really know how it works.

Can't Mrs Holmes have us abseil from a helicopter into the royal box?

And pick a day. I can jiggle the shifts to suit.

Miss you. My office is very boring compared to rubbing an oily unicorn on your torso.

I have pictures of torsos to keep me company. All with various stab wounds, crush injuries or burns. It's not the same.

(And when RR said Murray I honestly thought she meant your Murray, not tennis Murray...)

pandabob said...

I'd forgotten you were on nights shift tonight Greg, I hope it goes quickly for you :-)

Have fun whatever you and Sherlock are up to John :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Terrifyingly, she probably could.

My office is very boring compared to rubbing an oily unicorn on your torso.

Ha. I would be disappointed if it weren't!

Murray used to (possibly still does) try to convince people that he's related to Andy Murray.

Tomorrow? :)

REReader said...

(And when RR said Murray I honestly thought she meant your Murray, not tennis Murray...)

*facepalm*

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I tried to forget!

Sherlock - I have a new book for you.

Sherlock said...

What book? Can we come and get it?

pandabob said...

I can imagine you would Greg ;-)

its a good job you didn't though because someone will be in need of you tonight I'm sure!

Greg Lestrade said...

...just noticed John said 'tomorrow'...

what time, Danger? Maybe? It might be quite rainy...

AnonyBob - yeah, probably.

Sherlock, no, you can't come and get it! It's late! I shall bring it home for you. It's called 'Fisher's techniques of crime scene investigation'.

Sherlock said...

It sounds good can I take it to school? I have to go to bed now John says can you ring to say good night?

John H. D. Watson said...

L - well...not necessarily tomorrow if it's going to be pouring. But the sooner the better. I just don't want everyone I'd like to see to get eliminated before we go.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm happy to go tomorrow....slightly depending on what time it starts/finishes? But you should check out the weather...might be a bit of a washout.

Do they play every day? Or have Sunday off? I can't remember, sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sunday off. I suppose Monday might work, though it looks rainy for then, too. This may not work out actually. I've only ever queued overnight for court tickets and I thought for grounds passes we'd be able to get there a few hours before the matches start...but the site says a few hours before they open at 9.30. So definitely not tomorrow, possibly not at all. Oh well. I should've looked at that sooner, sorry.

Greg Lestrade said...

:(

we could still do the abseiling thing...

Couldn't...you go, and I can meet you there when I finish up? And Mrs Hudson could take Sherlock? Is it allowed, to save your partner a space in the queue? I can always flash my warrant card...pretend I'm your close protection officer?

Greg Lestrade said...

got to go, fight at a wedding...stabbing.

Let's not do that at ours?

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. The warrant card would be your only chance, I'm afraid. One person, one ticket. No saving places, no buying tickets for people not present. It's a pretty strict affair - I suppose it has to be.

I'll think about it. Might be nicer to stay home with you - and strawberries...and racquet shaped pasta. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - no, let's avoid all crimes at ours. Good luck.

Greg Lestrade said...

by the sound of the radio messages from uniform it's an ongoing mass brawl

Anonymous said...

Oh dear. Please be careful, Lestrade. Mass brawls are...not good.

John H. D. Watson said...

I hope it's going all right. I'm going to try to sleep in a bit, but call me if you get a chance.

Anonymous said...

I understand you'll probably go home and go to bed, but if either of you feel inclined to make a post here too, I'd appreciate it. I worry about cops wading into domestic situations, though I also worry far too much (and if John is sleeping I'm sure it's fine).

REReader said...

Here's hoping that by the time you got there it was mostly mopping up of the active brawling part; you'd have plenty to do just dealing with the stabbing.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry Ella! I'm fine, uniform had it sort of under control by the time I got there. Just been very busy all night.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Lestrade, glad to hear all is well. Or, well, all is…whatever the adjective you use for "I didn't get clobbered with a cricket bat." (And hopefully none of the uniforms did, either.) That just sounds like a hellish scene to try and get control of.

Greg Lestrade said...

No one got clobbered. A few drunken tussles, but nothing more.

Completely off topic. I want to see the machine that stuffs pimento in olives. There's probably a YouTube isn't there? Seems to be YouTube of everything nowadays.

rsf said...

Like this, maybe? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqzQy8xrDxE

Alas, I cannot find a youtube of Flanders and Swann's Olivadors.

Nice video, RSF! This one also shows the olives being stuffed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdCqelSoCqQ
