the plague, day 7

Lestrade here again. John is an unsurprisingly terrible patient, but I can't blame him. I'm always the same way. It's hell not being able to do anything when you're used to being up and about every second of the day.

Another science joke from the comments (Mycroft is still slaying his maths tutor with these, and even I found this one hilarious):

Two neutrinos walk into a bar. The bartender says "We don't serve neutrinos here."
The neutrinos reply "Geeze, pal, we're just passing through!"
Thanks, tiamat-the-red.

To the anonymous person who asked why I only go by my last name... Well, I don't really. Not on purpose. My mum calls me by my given name and all, and my sister and her kids. (Not her husband, but that's another story.) I suppose it's because that's how I generally end up introducing myself. And maybe I encourage it a bit. I'm not overly fond of my given name (sorry, mum).

It's all in what you're used to though, isn't it? There's about ten people who call me by my given name and probably a couple hundred who call me Lestrade, so. That's the one that feels normal to me, I suppose.

That's very kind of you to answer an impertinent question about your name from an anonymous commenter (I have been unable to get the blog to believe I am who I say I am, hence anonymity). I guess specifically I was wondering about John calling you "Lestrade," but it suits you and seems almost like a pet name when he mentions you. I hope he gets better quickly!

I understand the thing with getting used to a certain name, no one can pronounce mine when it's written and I usually have to say a sort of rhyme to help them remember =p I like Lestrade just fine by the way, sounds distinguished =]

It's a lovely name.

My mother's maiden name is Hooker.

(They're named after us not the other way 'round. Way back when kind of long story).

We've been thinking of changing it back (dad, meh), but Trista Hooker is just a sad joke really.

>Jessica B., that joke is both awful and amazing. (Took me awhile, truth be told)

you sound hot. ♥

Jessica - all right, John and the whiz kids are asleep and I've no one to ask. That wooshing noise you heard was your chemistry joke going straight over my head. Explain please?

Innie - no worries, it gave me something to talk about. Sorry about the blog thwarting you - you can always do what I do and pick "name/URL" and just fill in your name.

Bee - thanks. I get a bit of trouble with people spelling it peculiar ways (and then saying "Are you French or something?" No, I'm not), but on the whole it's served me well.

Trista - As in General Hooker of the Civil War? Is that story really true?

Lestrade said...

...Sorry, that was still me, not John. I should probably log out of his account.

justblue - damn right I'm hot.

Oh yeah. (I've read it several different ways, but yeah, Hooker's gals... My family's legacy wut...)

That is a mighty big statement Lestrade, I think that you're going to need pics to back up such a claim ;]

The base (KOH or potassium hydroxide) is under assault (a salt, NaCl sodium chloride).

Chemistry puns are so much sexier than physics puns.

@Jessica B. You take that back! Physics jokes are sexy! How else can you tell a girl the world revolves around her and actually mean it? You just have to define the coordinate system correctly!

Come on, I actually had an entire class on vibrations. I mean, really.

@tiamat-the-red

I confess, I was a physics major at university once upon a time. Physics jokes are sexy, they're just not as sexy as chemistry jokes.

...I have Good Vibrations stuck in my head now, thanks ever so much :)

@tiamat & Jessica

I went with the chem route so I've got to cast my vote with chem being sexier. But they are both sexy sciences...

Maybe we need a poll :]

Jessica - Thank you, and oh god that is awfulllll. Ha.

Trista - I'll see if I can dig something up for the post today, though newspaper photos are not always brilliantly flattering and that's all I'm likely to find on short notice. Hm.

One of my solid state textbooks (this one, in fact had small quotes at the start of each chapter. One such quote was "She's giving me good vibrations / I'm picking up excitations" :)

We had another class known as "S&M".

All right, I must know. What did it actually stand for?

I vote for physics and maths, because I actually understand those. My knowledge of chem, and in English at that, is too basic. I feel I should be ashamed of myself. What kind of a geek am I if I don't get those? ^^;;;

Lestrade said...

My knowledge of chemistry is practically nonexistant. Anyway, I'm told that if you understand physics, you understand everything really. (Was told that by a physicist obviously.)
