Everyone deserves to be able to treat themseves now and then and amazingly wonderful nannies even more so. Forget something used and buy something beautiful and brilliant.
(You two are going to be responsible for me actually learning to ride a bike you know! My dad will kill me but I'll just tell him the police and the medical profession think it's a good idea. OK? ;-) )

You could hire Sherlock to help clean-and-wax, now that he's an experienced bike-washer! (Or, you know, decide that new is a better value and thus really more economical. :))
Your biggest problem might be trying to avoid sharing it with Greg John although if you were going to share them you could of course buy both ;-) (you can't have too many bikes so I've heard!)
But there does come a moment John where you have to be able to say 'that's my shiny thing' ;-)
If I weren't about to become an exceedingly poor grad student I'd be test riding that triumph myself. It's the kind of bike I always thought I'd want if I ever learned to ride.

As I don't yet know how to ride I don't think they'd let me test ride one. Before I got accepted to grad school I'd been thinking a bike might be my consolation prize, and a much cheaper mid life crisis than an MFA. Now it will have to wait and maybe be my reward for getting a job after graduation.

my husband bought a 1978 MGB once because he thought it would be a good way to learn about cars and engines. he did learn a lot but mainly it was how to get oil out of him clothes, how to change spark plugs by the light of a torch and how to coast an engine less car across three lanes of traffic and down a slip road. we replaced it with a brand new car straight out of the garage with warranty and no near death experiences included ;-)
buy old and learn things you really rather you'd never had to or buy new and shiny and enjoy. there really is only one answer :-)
BMW sells "pre-owned" cars, with full warranties. Do they sell bikes that way, too? If so, it might be something to look into.
(Although, new is new... :))

I did have all second hand bikes when I started, partly because of money, partly because I rode like an idiot sometimes and dropped, crashed or broke bikes. Which you won't do. :)

Seriously though, no matter how much you like a bike's looks, you have to be comfy riding it. Much like other things in life. Thereve been a few bikes I've loved, but it hasn't worked out once I've tried them.

OK, my definition of short legs and yours might be different by an inch or two but still...
That said, I dislike the Trumpy but that's because I believe if you want to look like you have an old bike you get an old bike. You don't get the looks without working for them.
(I feel especially that way right now having finally got my 1973 Moto Guzzi back on the road and while she is a beautiful and majestic machine she has 40yo suspension and brakes...)
Rider - I'm hoping he'll try out quite a few once we're there. But obviously I'll pay the extra for the lowered seat ;)

Lestrade, you're not living rent-free in John's house; the pair of you share your home. John works two jobs; you work 12-hour days and a fair amount of unpaid overtime. Both of you spend an enormous amount of time and effort to make the boys, and each other, happy.
No-one's suggesting you're a saint, but buying your boyfriend a wonderful present that he really wants, but is reluctant to buy for himself, just because you like to make him happy is a rather lovely thing for you to do. Daft old bugger :-)
