This week was my last physio appointment. At least, it was my last as long as I'm 'a good little doctor' as she put it, and do my exercises properly. Otherwise she's threatened to haul me back in by my ear for another 5 - 10 weeks of hell.
It's helped. I've got a better range of motion than I had, more strength, far more ability to hold heavy weights directly out in front of me whilst wanting to die. All to the good, considering Sherlock, who is a weight growing daily heavier and taller and one that cannot be convinced not to jump on me at unexpected times. Not that I've really tried. I'll probably be sad when he grows out of it. Although I wouldn't mind if he limited it to after 8am.
Next week...L has something planned for Monday, and Sherlock has plans to take Mrs Hudson out somewhere. I'll be fascinated to find out where he takes her. He says he's going to clean the kitchen floor to earn money for it, and he's got to wash L's bike as well.
Thursday is Mycroft's birthday, and he's off school Friday to Sunday. I'm going to see about fetching him after classes are over on Thursday so we can all have dinner together...and then on Friday we're off to see Nicky and her family, and Rachel. It's not exactly last year's stargazing extravaganza, but Mycroft's happy with it. It'll be nice for him and Carla to see each other again, and his mum will be with us Thursday evening.
DW linked to this leadership reaction course in the comments of L's post. It sounds like a lot of fun, but even better would be to watch Sherlock's class doing it. I can't decide if they'd be brilliant at it or just ignore the instructions entirely and jump in the water. Either way, I'm pretty sure it would be entertaining.

I'm glad the physio has been successful for you John and I don't doubt you are a 'good little doctor' so you won't have a problem with maintaining progress :-)
It sounds like everyone is up for being spolit on Monday I hope the weather holds up, if good weather is needed :-)
Mycroft being home for the weekend of his birthday is good news I hope he, and all of you, enjoy the trip away :-)
Anonybob
I promise to help with your exercises. :)
Did you scowl at your doc like you do us for calling you little?
Some of those obstacles are wicked hard, and would have to be shrunken for kids to do, but will would be awesome to see Sherlock's class try.
Next week sounds like a lot of fun. I hope the weather cooperates with y'all.
I bet we can guess what kind of exercises you're willing to help with, Lestrade. Gripping, pulling...
Holy smokes Mycroft is going to be 14. I remember when the top of your blog said 12, John. Gah, they grow up so freaking fast.
Enjoy your Monday! I bet you guys will have a fantastic time. All of you, really, and then another fun weekend on the way. You guys need to tell me your secret for how you manage all of that fun on top of keeping a flat clean, laundry, shopping, working, running around, etc. I never manage it!
Mycroft - do you have anything in particular you want for your birthday this year?
DW - I don't dare scowl at her, god knows what she'd do.
Yeah, it'd have to be like the mini-golf version for Sherlock's class, but it'd be funny as hell. And I meant to say, congratulations to you and your flight on the 19 out of 21; some of those sound bloody difficult!
Maz - Mycroft is going to be 14
I know! It's unreal. Some of the things I was doing at 14 that I thought I was quite old enough for...well, I hope he's not doing any of them!
Hah, yeah, I didn't think about that, honestly! Mycroft always seems so sensible and mature I forget that there are still some things he hasn't experienced yet...and perhaps may still be a bit young for! :D And now that I think on it, I definitely know of a few things I did and shouldn't have back then!
Well done on the physio front, John. Hope it continues to help.
I didn't realise Mycroft's birthday is the day before mine! And if you reverse the numbers of the age he'll be, you'll get what I will be. God, where did the years go?
I know! It's unreal. Some of the things I was doing at 14 that I thought I was quite old enough for...well, I hope he's not doing any of them!
Amen to that!
Mmmm, lazy mornings, long breakfasts, this is what weekends are made for.
Have a great weekend guys and badgers. We're off to Cardiff in a few minutes. If you don't hear from me by tomorrow, send out a search party ;)
Enjoy Cardiff, SH :-)
We're in London for a long weekend, so
with a deliciously lazy lie-in. Must go in
breakfast soon...
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
I hope you are all having a great time. I'm getting lots of hugs, which is very nice. And baking custard cream for my lovely supportive amazing boyfriend.
And Sherlock is researching tea. With John's help.
Tea is very important.
So are custard creams, obviously. :)
I promise to help with your exercises.
Yeah...you may be getting an email from her about that. Apparently she doesn't quite trust me to do them on my own. Can't imagine why...
Doctors make such good patients that I can't think why she might doubt you John ;)
Glad you're all having a good day. Tea, custard creams and cuddles what more could anyone need?
EBSanon
Custard creams take ages to make and it's so boring waiting because they smell nice and I want to eat them and so does John but I'm learning about tea for Mrs Hudson so I know what sort of tea I might want on Monday because there are loads of different sorts and I think I want gunpowder tea because it sounds the best.
They don't take ages - you just can't put the filling in when they're still hot! It would melt!
Patience, young one.
Ah, a peaceful evening with L shouting at the football...
And Sherlock, I see you over there. Step away from the biscuits.
You told me to stop sulking at the football. Shouting isn't sulking. Make your mind up!
And Liverpool...just...do something!
Sherlock, you won't get pudding if you eat any more of those biscuits.
I wasn't complaining! Shouting is much more entertaining than sulking.
Normally Lestrade wants to team in red to win but today he doesn't want either to win, even though one is in red and today he wants them to win a bit more but not really and they just lost.
Ugh.
Different teams in red, Sherlock. That was Liverpool, not Arsenal. Losing to Chelsea.
I need a drink.
good job you've got custard creams to make it all better Greg :-) I hope you haven't eaten them all while he wasn't looking Sherlock ;-)
Not the right result but then you can never trust Liverpool can ya ;-)
Anonybob
Does scotch go with custard creams? I think we're going to find out.
I think we need to turn the telly off before I see Lamps lift the trophy, that's what I think.
Fancy a run? Or a bike ride? Or a swim in the Thames?
Probably not a swim in the Thames, but I'm up for either of the other two.
Sherlock, you get the casting vote. Bike ride with us? We go for a run and Mrs H gets the pleasure of a 6yr old jacked up on custard creams? We go for a run, you stay in the playground, and we just run sprints right next to it (if John is up to sprints...)?... we go for a run and you set pace on your bike?
I can cycle and you can run and I bet I can beat you because I can go really fast now!
You certainly can go really fast. And John looks horrified.
But I'm sure his physio would approve :)
Undoubtedly...
Be sure to take pity on them after a while Sherlock.
Yeah, pity the fools, Sherlock.
C'mon, Danger. Rise up to the challenge of our rival...
Our rival has wheels!
It's the thrill of the fight...
if you take any longer to put your shoes on we'll be running in the dark...
I was waiting for you! Let's go. Or roll. One of those.
John thinks Sherlock may have a future as a sadis...I mean, physiotherapist...
I went really fast and they didn't keep up
sherlock wins
Want a rub down, once Sherlock's in bed? I bought some coconut oil the other day.
God yes. I love you.
Love you too. We've been bad recently. Should run more. Maybe this is a good solution - means we don't need to leave Sherlock with Mrs H.
And he enjoys it...far too much...
Because I won!
Maybe Sherlock could help ensure you do your exercises, Doc. Between him and the Lestallion you should make great progress.
Maybe he'd put you on his degu chart? He'd weigh you, measure your tail and note down your water intake every week. :)
What, just me? With you he could do coffee intake and paperwork output as well...
You'd make a really good personal trainer Sherlock :-) maybe that's a career for you in the future. ;-)
Anonybob
His chart doesn't go high enough for my coffee intake...
Good things about Sherlock cycling when we run - he's one tired little boy at bedtime.
Which means I get all the more time to lavish on a certain doctor...
Mm, it's good for all of us, I'm sure.
You now smell deliciously of coconut oil.
Makes me hungry. I refuse to divulge on a family blog just what I might satisfy myself with, though ;)
You can do what you like as long as you promise to put your phone down first!
Protein's supposed to be good after exercise...
just what I might satisfy myself with, though
I think we all can guess. Coconut cream pie?
Totally what I would have guessed, DW. Or Macaroons.
But why we couldn't talk about that on a family blog I have no idea. Is there something racy about macaroons?
Oh, yay for the gains you got out of the physio, John!
The plans for next weekend sound fun--and it being Mycroft's birthday this week reminds me...I wanted to thank you for asking about microhistories, Mycroft. I've started rereading the ones I have in the house and enjoying them--and I only thought of them because of you, so thank you. :)
The running/biking race sounds brilliant--yay you for winning, Sherlock!
Hope you all have a lovely Sunday morning...
Thanks. Much more relaxed now than when I jumped put of my skin and nearly booted John onto the floor out of bed.
He seems to have forgiven me.
What made you jump?
Dreaming of falling? Or something else making you jump Greg?
Hope you're all having a fun relaxed morning :-) if the weather is like it is here Sherlock you might want to suggest another ride/run ;-)
Anonybob
I don't know if he moved and hugged me or something or I totally dreamt it. Just sort of shoved him off me a bit violently. Both woke up in a fit of adrenaline.
Bad dream, L? Can't be held responsible for dreams.
What're you all doing today? I've got a happy day of working on my website planned--but I expect I'll mostly be "helping" my mother find something to wear to my nephew's engagement party this evening... :D
Kind of to be expected Greg after the week you've had! not nice but understandable.
Is your day going well? nights have a mind of their own it's the days you need to focus on :-)
Anonybob
I don't know if it was a dream or just a confused instinct.
Think maybe John and Sherlock have done such a good job of distracting me all day that it's night when my brain runs wild :)
Day is very nice and lazy. Although we might go swimming in a bit.
Brains will do that.
Lazy sounds lovely. So does swimming. :)
It might indicate a need for a cuddle and a bit of a chat with the doc before heading to bed tonight but all in all distraction is the best idea and what better distraction than Sherlock and John :-)
You're swimming in a pool not the Thames right? ;-)
Yeah, cuddles always sound good to me. I felt terrible waking him so abruptly - doesn't exactly do his nerves any good!
It's all right, it was just momentarily exciting.
Yes, of course you mind that you woke him like that--but how would you feel if/when he wakes you abruptly? (it happens to a lot of us, with or without justification, after all...) You worry because you care, but try not to beat yourself up about it, please? Two-way street and all. :)
(I'm saying this badly, but I hope what I mean is coming across....)
Of course I don't mind, and I know he doesn't. Although he's never quite kicked me out of bed.
I'm not beating myself up, I'm just aware it wasn't the most relaxed way to wake up.
You feel terrible because it's a rubbish thing to happen, John says it doesn't matter because it happens to everyone and is probably better than the times he wakes up and you're not there because you're concious enough to worry about waking him.
All in all best to 'forget about it' (hoping you know what I mean by that) and concentrate on cuddle, fun, chats and tonight's good night sleep for all :-)
(I'm sure the cuddles took care of it both ways. :))
He assures me it is better than when I wander off. Not that I'll probably stop doing that either.
Suppose it's more that I never want him to think it's him I'm reacting to, which I know he knows it isn't, but still.
Anyway, I should stop talking about it.
You should only stop talking about it if that will stop you thinking about it, although you should always feel free to stop talking to us about it that's what John's for after all :-)
Swimming? did you go? are you going? :-)
The real question is what percentage of the custard cremes are left? And what have you got against macaroons?
I had the impression that the Doc is quite amenable to the odd moment of excitement, Lestrade.
Hope the rest of your nice lazy day continues to be nice, even if swimming makes it a little less lazy :-)
Ah, the custard cremes reminded me, DW...
Are you three making Mycroft a birthday cake to bring along Thursday evening?
I think his mum's making it, but I've got to ring her and make sure. She seemed pretty definite about it last year.
Why would I have anything against macaroons?
Percentage of custard creams left - 0.
But I might be talked into making chocolate Orange cup cakes this afternoon.
And what would I have to do to talk you into that?
Dunno. Just exist, probably :)
Although it will mean we need to run again soon if we eat them.
You could make them, and then we could run while they cool, and then we could eat them? :)
They do need to cool before icing, so if we can crowbar Sherlock away from the cooling rack...
With the temptation of leaving us gasping in his wake again as he zooms ahead? I suspect we won't have a problem.
What do you say, Sherlock--want to beat...er, race John and Lestrade again today while the cupcake are cooling? Also, do you know what you want to give Mycroft for a birthday present?
Ha, true. Well, you get your togs on, these won't take long. :) want to drink the spare Orange juice - freshly squeezed!
I cycled really well again and now I'm tasting the icing for the cupcakes because it needs to be orangey and Lestrade says he still doesn't have tastebuds and might never ever again.
what would they do without you Sherlock? keeping them fit AND tasting their baking for them!
I hope you enjoy them once they're finished :) (don't eat them all though will you)
EBSanon
Yay for excellent cycling!! And taste-testing is an important quality-control job--even if Lestrade is possibly exaggerating on the tastebuds thing, it's still important to get good feedback. :)
EBSanon - He will not, though I've no doubt he'd like to try!
You made quite a dent just in the mix, before cooking!
Both of you need to eat this prawn stuff and things before cupcakes though. Danger, yours has chilli.
Mmm, prawn stuff and things. Delicious!
(Shh, it was good mix.)
cake mix tastes better than cake though Greg ;-)
Anonybob
Weeeeeeell--but you can't frost cake mix, Anony!
You can't ice anything when Sherlock eats all the icing before it hits the cake.
It sounds like everyone is having a wonderful evening, actually... :)
Eat cake mix before baking save on electricity :-)
Eat icing by the bowl full save on sleep ;-)
Danger, yours has chilli.
I did wonder where Lestrade's tastebuds went :-p. Sounds like you're all having a lovely evening :-)
My tastebuds aren't back from the soup yet! 2012 - year of the great tastebud massacre.
Cupcakes, though, were chilli free, and fairly decent.
Now you've just made me think of chili-chocolate cupcakes...
Well, Danger, not saying that I know you or anything, but if you pick any cupcake without Orange peel as decoration, you may discover where the excess chilli from your dinner went. (they are orange-less). I was going to make you wait until tomorrow.
You...are amazing.
And these are the most delicious cupcakes of all time.
Well, now you've completely ruined both our abilities to taste, I may as well keep going, right?
I can do you some chilli choc ice cream too, at some point. Hot and cold all over.
Please come over here and let me kiss you. That sounds like the perfect ice cream.
You can kiss me. Then we can put Sherlock to bed. Then you can kiss me lots more.
You have the best plans.
Chocolate orange cup cakes sound wonderful, chilli cup cakes don't appeal at all. As for chilli choc ice cream - please pass the marmite on toast.
My son came round this afternoon and when he left we realised that the next time we see him will be on his wedding day. I feel quite sad now, even though I'm really excited about the wedding.
SH - I'm sorry you're feeling sad. Change can be hard, even when it's positive change.
That must be a very odd feeling, SH. But I hope the big day is brilliant.
Sherlock is worried about his outfit for his date tomorrow.
It's a big milestone, SH, so there's room for both happy and sad.
L--Clothes are important! Sherlock, think what you think Mrs. Hudson likes, AND (very important) what you feel nice in, then check with John. I bet you'll end up looking very handsome.
Don't I get to be asked an opinion?
I think he'd be better off asking you than me, to be honest.
Dunno, it is Mrs H he's trying to impress...
Don't tickle me!
Lestrade!
What did I do to deserve a full name??
Awww, SH. :( I know it'll be odd, but hopefully still brilliant.
Chili chocolate anything would never have occurred to me. Nor orange chocolate. I apparently don't have enough imagination for baking.
Same thing you did to deserve the tickling!
Well, L, I don't quite know how to put this delicately, but the examples of your fashion taste that have appeared on this blog here...Classic looks are best for first dates, I always think.
:D
Danger - nothing, then!
RR - my fashion choices are classic!
You can't go wrong with chocolate and orange DW and I might fancy trying chocolate and chilli if I wasn't going to have to make it myself, fear of chilli hand put's me off ;-)
I think Sherlock would look lovely in some of your 'fashion' choices Greg, you really should get a vote ;-)
Very well--Sherlock, ask Lestrade and then check with John. ;D (seriously, Sherlock--I say go with what makes you feel nice-looking. You always look nicer when you feel like you look nice.)
You're one of those people who looks good in anything, Lestrade, which is brutally unfair. I'll leave it to Doc about nothing. ;)
I can assure you he looks good in nothing as well.
No, no, I get it.
Sherlock, if you don't want advice on the cut of a suit, or the style of a shirt or anything, then that's fine, steer well clear of me.
DW - I assure you I look better when a tailor has done the hard work. ;)
(I tease because I love. ;))
Off to my nephew's engagement party. I would have been much happier with a weeknight, but no one asked me... ;D
Uh huh. Right. Which explains the gray t-shirt you're wearing in your profile pic how? Give it up, Lestrade.
don't go picking on that t-shirt DW ;-)
I'm not picking on it! Lestrade just said he looks better when a tailor's done the hard work, about which he's clearly mistaken because his profile pic has him in a gray t-shirt in which he still looks fantabulous. That's all I'm saying.
Basically, I'm jealous of Doc 'cause has Lestrade and Lestrade 'cause he has Doc and both of them because they look good in whatever they happen to be wearing. That's all.
(captcha says "barerear tryst" :O )
That, John-the-god-of-jumpers can confirm, is a cashmere v neck jumper he bought for me, because me in shirts and suit jackets is 'work' me, and that's a way around it - still a nice jacket, but no shirt.
some highly qualified tailor has to have made the t-shirt though surely DW or he couldn't possibly look as good as he does in it ;-)
Jealous aswell DW it just isn't fair is it ;-)
DW - you never had a Terry's Chocolate Orange? That's so sad. I'd send you one, but I'd probably eat it before I could post it.
SH - Perfectly understandable to be feeling slightly mixed emotions. Is the wedding next Saturday?
Lestrade - don't worry, we all looked like that in the Eighties. Well, sort of...
Look, people. I wear a blue uniform one day a week, and a green/gray one 4-6 days a week. What I know about clothes you could fit on a cufflink. I apologize for not knowing the difference between cashmere jumpers and cotton t-shirts from a picture, but I can still tell a hawk from a handsaw, and both Lestrade and Doc are handsome men.
No, Nameless. Never had a chocolate orange. I'll see if I can't rustle one up 'round these parts. I would like to point out that in the '80s some of us were wearing slightly...simpler clothing. As in onesies and nappies. :P
DW - I had to defend the jumper because it's about the only time you'll see me in one, and they're John's favourite!
Is be happy in a dark grey, blue or black suit or jeans every day, really.
Just looking at a chocolate orange will rot your teeth, theyre so sweet :)
What I know about clothes you could fit on a cufflink
Me too, I'm afraid. That's why I stick to jumpers, and what I was wearing in the 80s...looked very much like what I wear now. Someone told me once I don't have a sense of style so much as a sense of stodge - probably that's about right.
Ha, that's bollocks, Danger! You bought me that jumper everyone is complimenting!
And your lovely biking gear you chose. All proof you have great taste.
DW - chocolate oranges are great. The only trouble is that once you start to eat one you tend to feel obliged to finish it.
Nameless and others, thank you for your kind words. Yes, the wedding is next Saturday.
I'd spend all my time in hoodies if I could; my clothes sense is limited to "if it's blue it will do for work".
handsome men don't need style John they just are handsome :) And there is nothing better than a cute doc in a jumper ;)
EBSanon
Reading these blogs always brings a smile to my face. *giggling*
DW - Some of us didn't exist in the 80s... :P
SH - Congratulations on your son's wedding!
John, Greg - Sometimes, it's not about the clothing. It's about how you pull them off. Both of you manage to look very handsome, regardless of what you're wearing.
~A from NW
A - surely everyone has an accent? But I feel your pain if someone keeps mentioning it. When I moved to London... yeah.
And I do love pulling John's clothes off. :)
Greg - ...I--I didn't mean it in that way! (Though I can see why that'd be fun ;D)
Yes, indeed, everyone has an accent, and as long as you can communicate in it, I'm not fussy about it.
It's... I speak Mandarin with a Taiwanese accent. Most of my coworkers are from mainland China, with a variety of accents. One of them told me on Friday to stop speaking Mandarin to him because he "couldn't understand my accent." I was too shocked to say anything back to him because most people, when they hear my Mandarin, don't believe that I'm a heritage speaker and have never lived in Taiwan.
~A from NW
Your co-worker sounds incredibly rude!
I just used to get all the jokes about 'I cant hear you over that carrot you're crunching' type thing, just because city vs. countryside is an ongoing battle...
And now I think it's time for Danger to oil me up, tonight...
A - I think your co-worker is a bit of an arse, yeah.
L - ah, the call of duty...
Greg, John - You both have fun tonight with your, ah, duties. ;)
It takes all sorts to make the world go 'round. I'll...just need to remember to Zen and ignore what I can.
~A from NW
AfNW--As the guys said, your co-worker needs a refresher course in decent manners. (And I'm being polite by assuming your co-worker ever had manners to forget.) Humph!
John and L--there's fashion, and there's style. Fashion is dictated by trend setters and other "authorities" and is exceedingly fleeting; style is individual, an expression of personality, and lasts. You both definitely have excellent style, and Sherlock couldn't find anyone better to get sartorial advice from. :)
(My nephew's fiancée is sweet and friendly and cute as a button--and my nephew looks very happy. It's good!)
I hope plans of the cunning variety go well today ;-)
Enjoy your date Sherlock :-)
I hope everyone enjoys their bank holiday :-)
