Back to normal, I suppose, at least until L gets his time off settled and we can get away for a while. Mrs Holmes thinks it's a good plan as well and might even join us for part of it. I don't think we'll be saying anywhere public where we're going, except that it'll have sun (fingers crossed) and hopefully a beach.
L has already painted a vivid picture of himself in (bright) yellow (short) shorts playing air guitar on a pair of jeans - I suppose not actually air guitar, but perhaps laundry guitar? Denim guitar? - when Mrs Hudson brought Laura up to see us.
I wasn't there to witness it, sadly, but L's shriek summoned me fairly quickly, so I got to see his outfit and Laura's reaction to it at least. Or I should say Laura and Mrs Hudson's reactions to it, since Mrs H seemed suitably impressed and told him his shorts fit very nicely (they do).
For those of you not of a mind to keep up with my exes, Laura is the one, as L put it, who has a tiny dog and got me arrested in Egypt. The tiny dog, Biscuit, has since passed on, but she has another now named Vespasian. She gets them from a breeder named, no joke, Mrs Strange. She is, too; I've met her.
L streaked off to put some clothes on, I made tea and introduced her to Sherlock and Mycroft, and we all talked for a while. Or four out of five of us talked, once L returned, and Sherlock glared. Later on in the evening he said she couldn't have me back, which explained the glaring. She kindly refrained from saying she wouldn't want me back, but I know it's true - neither of us would've known what to do with each other in any sort of long term romantic arrangement.
L said he was going to hold my hand possessively on the way to the restaurant, and did so, which I suppose means Sherlock wasn't the only one who was worried, though I hope L knew he had nothing to worry about. Though I'd probably feel the same if his exes showed up out of the blue as mine now seem inclined to do.
Over dinner, Laura told everyone a bit about how we met and kindly left out the fact that I couldn't pay for dinner because I'd lost nearly everything I had in a card game in some bloke's basement. That was an interesting night.
So...there was pizza and ice cream, and Sherlock was won over by garlic bread the the promise of camel riding if we ever go to Egypt. We all stayed up far too late and had a lovely time. I might see her for lunch before she goes back, but I think she's leaving fairly soon, so maybe not.
And now back to bed for hopefully an hour or so before Sherlock's up. It's been a long couple of days. I think I want to just be in bed with L more than I want to actually sleep.

An excellently good reason for going back to bed, I'd say. :) And thanks for the play by play of the evening-it does sound very nice. G'night!
Being with L sounds good. And Laura sounds like she is nice, even if you and she both do know that it wasn't a long term thing. I'm glad Sherlock warmed up to her. Food hath charms to soothe the savage beast, I guess. Or camel riding.
I hope you can get some sleep. And once you've found your undisclosed location for vacation I hope you all have a wonderful time. I know that Mycroft and Sherlock will appreciate some more time with their mum. And you can always report back afterwards!

Being in bed with me is definitely a good place to be.
It sounds like you had a fun night with Laura which is good as surprise guests really can go one of two ways ;-)
I hope you got some sleep or at least some quiet time before Sherlock got up.
Wishing you a fun day with the boys John and a good day at work Greg.
Hope you managed to get at least some sleep John (you too, Lestrade).
Getting back to a semblance of routine has to be a goo thing, especially for the boys.

Sounds like the basis for a whole nother blog post :-)
Laura clearly realised that she could be no competition compared with a laundry guitarring short yellow shorts wearing Lestrade. How far down the street could his shriek be heard?
Echoing Nameless' interest in hearing more about that interesting night.
Hope you all have a good day, without anything untoward happening.
Can't believe you all put more stock in the words of a camel-rustling criminal than an upstanding DI! Shorts were not that short, nor that bright. Why would I own short bright yellow shorts? And the shout was for John, not a shriek.
Wuldn't worry about my exes, they tend to neatly fall into the catergories of 'bastards' or 'dead'. With a very few exceptions.
it's nothing personal Greg we all just believe the thing that's funniest ;-)
How's work treating you today?
I hope you and the boys are having fun John :-)
Work has treated me to a Decomposing corpse.
it's always good to have something to tkae your mind off things I guess ;-)
And right about now, Sherlock is probably expressing a wish to join you... :D
Just what you want on a Friday afternoon!
There are a lot of flies who've clearly been making the most of it.
Lovely.
Somehow, I don't think that's precisely what Disney had in mind by "the circle of life," but...
Danger, I'm off from Monday. You and the boys get planning the sun, sea and... fun.
Will do. Sherlock's irritated that it's not camping in teepees, but I think he'll like it once he gets there.
Maybe we can do teepees at half term or something.
I'd really like a nice empty beach or something. Remote villa with a pool. Maybe small local market in the next town?
Yeah, sounds perfect. I think I've got a place. Do you want to see it? I can email you, unless the decomposing corpse is demanding all your attention.
I trust your judgement. Rather not risk you sending it to my phone and then me losing it or getting dipped or something.
MMm nothing like a decomposing corpse, I think they are the foulest smelling things on the planet *shudders*
Interesting story about deoomposing corpses (well not to Sherlock, no foul play involved). I was a volunteer paramedic's aide in the desert for a few months last year, and my friend got called out early in the morning to a call where a woman had died of a heart attack...5 days beforehand, and her family had been away, so no one had noticed until the neighbours reported an awful smell.
He wasn't thrilled, came back and described it to us, and then all 4 of us were called to the same flat an hour later, to try and move them. Unfortunately the lady had been very overweight and the decomposition process had made her even bigger (thankfully she was in a body bag at this stage), and she didn't fit on the gurney or the stretcher. She was eventually lifted onto the spinal board with a great deal of difficulty, but the straps wouldn't go around her. The men then tried to lift her downstairs (2 floors up) but rounding the first corner onto the landing, she slipped off the spinal board and slid down 6 or 7 steps to the next landing. Now my roommate and I were standing at this landing, clearing the stairs ahead, and I can vividly remember the "Wait WAIT she's slipping she's slipping!" and the sickening silence as this fairly large black body bag slid towards us, and then the "Uhmmm what are we going to do NOW?!"
So, um moral of the story, decomposing corpses take up a lot of your attention, and never ever ever get picked to ride in the back of an ambulance with one on the way to the hospital (not me, thank God).
Jaws - did you get out of the way in time?
L - right, we have a villa, on an actual beach. It's described in the advert as 'sun drenched'. We'll see.
Yikes, Jaws! That's quite an...experience, I think that's the word.
Sun and sea and a real break from everyday life sounds like the perfect vacation to me. :)
(You didn't say how long you were planning to be gone, but if it's more than a couple of days, you might want to line up someone to come by once or twice to let the degus out to play for a little while, since last I heard Mrs Hudson wasn't really up for it. Sherlock can give him or her degu-wrangling instructions before you leave, there's still the whole weekend.)
I can feel my tan deepening at the sound of it.
Jaws - happily none of us ever have to ride with corpses. But I have been to a few scenes now where the removal of the body has needed ... an unusual course of action. And used to get left guarding bodies quite often when I was younger.
One of Anthea's men is doing it because they have to walk the dogs too and be in the flat and they'll probably he bored anyway and Mrs Hudson knows what they can eat and she even strokes them if I hold them now but she doesn't like having them running about still.
You really have it covered, Sherlock! You are such a careful and responsible degu owner, I'm very impressed. Are you looking forward to being at the beach? It's my favorite kind of vacation.
What an interesting job description: dog and degu wrangler. Quite the contrast in size too from what I understand of your dogs. Do the dogs and degus get along? I might have expected the dogs to see the degus as a snack.
MMM... sun drenched villa. I'm more than a little jealous.
John, we were frozen for a second and then there was a brisk scramble out of the way. I was NOT touching that body, let me tell you.
L, I don't mind dead bodies so much, but I suppose the difference is the ones I've encountered died fairly peacefully, a murdered one would be a whole different matter. We thought we might have a death by negligence on our hands once, but thankfully they made a full recovery, the paramedics I knew were unbelievably good.
Happier note, villa on a beach sounds phenomenal! How about buying/renting some cheap snorkels and going on an expedition? I bet the boys would have a "whale" of a time :)
A villa on the beach sounds wonderful! Especially a sun-drenched one.
(In fact, we've got a bungalow on a beach (doesn't sound quite the same, does it?) lined up in a few weeks, can't wait to get out the interminable greyness and into some sun.)
Jaws - 0_0
Bungalows are nice, too, Nameless--my family used to take a bungalow in Far Rockaway for the summers, it was great!
...I hope no one here was in the area of the Empire State Building, or has relatives there--and if they were there, I hope they are all right! (I used to work right in the Empire State Building in college, it's rather unsettling to see it turned into a crime scene.)
Jaws - with a name like yours I'm wary of you tempting us into the water! But snorkelling would be great.
That does sound like fun. Have you ever done it before?
I've snorkelled, but undoubtedly not in water as warm or clear, given it was off the UK.
I highly recommend snorkeling. I'm not even much of a swimmer, but floating along while the sea turtles were floating along 4 feet below me was quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever done. Can't guarantee sea turtles wherever you're going to be but I imagine it's pretty neat no matter what's down there.
I'll be a little late home.
Submit any special dinner requests here.
I hope there are sea turtles. I'd like to see that.
Lestrade, we got asparagus, so could we have that and lemon risotto?
Snorkelling does sound fun. And I seem to remember something about Sherlock wanting to jump or dive into the ocean, so I expect he'll have a grand time. Will you be taking enough colorful sunblock that he can be stripy?
By the way, today we had a "nocturnal animals" show at the library and one of the critters was an African scorpion. It was neat. I'd never seen a scorpion under blacklight before! (And I can't help wonder if the American scorpions are the same.) If you can find a blacklight flashlight to take with you, maybe you can find other plants or animals that look different under its glow.
rsf
Sure thing, Mycroft.
RSF - excuse my ignorance, is a blacklight a uv light?
snorkelling is brilliant you really should give it a go, I've just got wet suits for my shortones so they can try it :-)
I hope you're home soon Greg and a peaceful evening for you all follows
I've never been snorkeling, but my brother has been both snorkeling and scuba diving (it was required for his MA--his grad school major was marine archaeology :)) and says they are both wonderful.
(And now I wanna go snorkeling!)
L, yes, blacklight is UV. The presenter made me curious about it too, because he said that flowers always glow to UV vision, and that's how bees find them, so now I want a blacklight flashlight too.

Lestrade - no worries the name is misleading, I'm actually a lifeguard! Strangely enough I'm an ex-competitive swimmer, a swimming coach and teacher as well as a casual lifeguard and my nickname has nothing to do with the water.
If you go snorkelling think about some waterproof shoes for the boys, Sherlock especially. A lot of places have sea urchins and it's all too easy to put your foot down on one without thinking. I'd suggest Crocs but Mycroft would mutiny!
Crocs, or imitation crocs, are perfect for the beach. More toe protection than flipflops and no great loss if you do lose them. What I always end up needing is a hat. Mind you, half the time I'm carrying cool seashells and rocks in it...
Pandabob, how small do they make wetsuits? I had the impression your little people were really little.
rsf
You can buy sort of swimming shoes really cheaply - they're kind of like wetsuit shoes, with a rubber sole and only cost a few quid. Good thought. We probably all need them. Although Sherlock still wants to eat sea urchin...
RSF - I've seen pretty tiny wetsuits before.
they make them very small and very cute rsf, the kids are 5 and 2 in a couple of weeks :-) The nearly 2 years old wanted to get out of the car and swim in the flood waters we were stuck in a few weeks ago! she is water obsessed so I thought it would be fun, I'm not sure she'll manage a snorkel but she'll love the swimming and the waves. :-)
I haven't seen them that small here, but I usually am only at the beach when it's hot and the water is warm enough to stay in for more than five minutes.
Does Sherlock have a wetsuit yet? Do any of the rest of you?
rsf
I don't, don't think either of the boys do. Although I'm hoping where we're going will be well warm enough not to need a suit. Wearing wetsuits would spoil the fun I plan on having slapping the sunblock on John.
Yeah, I think a wetsuit would be excessive where we're going, thankfully.
Must be somewhere warm then. Mind you, warm is good! (At least as long as you don't sunburn too badly.) I'll try to restrain my curiosity, though. There's plenty of coastline in the world for your vacation pleasure.
