birmingham

Want to help name Pluto's moons? (Who wouldn't want to help name Pluto's moons?)

Anyway, I'm in Birmingham. This is the picture I sent Sherlock and L last night of my hotel room.

Unexciting hotel room

And this is where the course is being held, in case you want to see where I'll be spending most of my waking hours for the next week.

Even more unexciting conference room where the course is being held

Went out to dinner with Pen, who I know from the Army, his wife, Josna, who once threw a tea cup at me, Sean, who I knew in medical school, and Allison, who's doing the course with me and who I also sort of knew in medical school, but not really. I mean, I knew who she was, but we never talked much. I was most familiar with her due to Sean mooning over her constantly and never actually getting up the nerve to speak to her. I think he once asked to borrow her pen, but that was as far as he got. He did a lot better tonight.

I showed them all pictures of L and Sherlock and Mycroft. Sherlock was 'adorable', Josna called Lestrade a silver fox and said my taste had improved (??), and the one I showed them of Mycroft was of him at the dirt bike place, mud spattered and grinning next to a bike. It was generally agreed he'd be a heartbreaker and a troublemaker in a few years...

I've just hung up from Sherlock calling to say goodnight. He says he's being VERY GOOD and I should take pictures of any dead bodies I happen to get a chance to dissect, even though I've told him that's not going to happen. He said, 'but just in case!' Just in case I happen to stumble across one, I suppose. Admittedly, stranger things have happened to me.

Greg Lestrade said...

Have you figured out what the guitar string was for yet?

Tell Josna from me that her taste has undoubtedly got worse ;)

He really is being very good. Apart from a few rather...elaborate tales he's been telling people at school about your whereabouts.

John H. D. Watson said...

I have no idea! Do you know?

I dunno, you haven't thrown any tea cups at me...

Worse than 'cutting up dead bodies'?

Greg Lestrade said...

I asked. He gave me a scathing look and leapt up, kung fu style, as if brandishing it then hissed 'ASSASSINS!' and slow-motion-mimed garrotting someone...so check in your wardrobe/under your bed. He'll never forgive you if you didn't take it and then needed it.

I meant that she let you go! Lucky for me though.

He told some classmates that you were learning to be the one who cut off the criminal's head and put it on a spike outside the Yard...

John H. D. Watson said...

...Worryingly, garrotte was actually my first guess.

On a spike? Really? And he hadn't even had cake then. Wow.

Greg Lestrade said...

He also informed Mrs N that you could take organs out of criminals and give them to good people, and she shouldn't worry because having a bad organ in you wouldn't make you very bad, just a bit.

Sometimes I really wonder about him.

John H. D. Watson said...

Just a bit bad...right... Well. I suppose she's used to it from him. More or less.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I fear the day his musings are more believable.

Skype? I might even play you a song. You can dance ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Only if you don't record it!

Greg Lestrade said...

But you admit you would dance?

Only be for my private enjoyment. See me through the long winter nights. Feel free to incorporate a strip tease...

John H. D. Watson said...

You'll have to play for me to find out.

Greg Lestrade said...

(he danced. Slightly reluctantly. Refuse to say what else he did ;) )

Sherlock seems to be asleep, so I'm going to check the bed for milk, flour and eggs and go to sleep.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh, I meant to say about the history...in one of the earliest recorded cases of a medical opinion being crucial in the outcome of a trial...Malta, 1542, where a marriage was annulled after medical evidence showed that the husband was incapable of intercourse. You have to wonder exactly what they did to establish that.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that really is a long time ago! I wonder why the annulment got as far as court?

(And here I was thinking you were probably hearing more about people like Bernard Spilsbury.)

I hope tomorrow's class is interesting! Sleep well.

HAPPY PANCAKE DAY

we're having pancakes for breakfast

pandabob said...

Happy pancake day Sherlock :-)

Enjoy your pancakes and please let us know at bedtime how many you've managed to eat today. ;-)

Have a good day Greg, you too John

Greg Lestrade said...

Spilsbury isn't particularly relevant to FME work, RSF. Besides, John wouldn't have needed to go on a course - Sherlock is a leading expert on him.

AnonyBob - he's on his third...

You have a nice day too.

Tina said...

Happy pancake day to you too, Sherlock! And to anyone else having pancakes today. Not me, I'm afraid I'll have no time to make some today :-(

Kestrel337 said...

Garrotte was my first guess, too. Or emergency cheese slicer.

Small Hobbit said...

Happy pancake day Sherlock and you too Greg. And possibly non-pancake day, John.

Greg Lestrade said...

He is starting a petition to the dinner ladies in the school playground for pancakes at lunch

I'm tired already! And now to work.

pandabob said...

Its special pancake lunch at shorty's school, everyone's invited for pancakes even if they're on packed lunches :-)

Drink more coffee! Surely your app has told you to do that by now ;-)

Anonymous said...

Happy Pancake Day! I'm going to make mine when I wake up properly. And then make more at the library today, if I can, because the schools are still closed and I'll need to keep the kids who come in happy.

Speaking of the library... We've got a book about Spilsbury, but I haven't read it yet, just glanced through. He did a lot of testimony in court, which is why I thought he might be relevant. Granted that was a long while ago!

Pancakes for breakfast, pancakes for lunch, pancakes for supper... Yum! It's going to be a very good day.

Happy Pancake Day, Sherlock!

(I guessed tripwire, rather than garrote. :))

Anonymous said...

I work in a school and my headteacher has decided to cook pancakes as part of a Full School Assembly. She seems to be inordinately wound up by it all. I don't know if she's planning to toss them in front of all 400+ 11-16 year olds!

Lancs. Anon

KHolly said...

I guess I'll have to go out for pancakes because I just tried to buy milk at the corner store while I was walking the dog and they have not had any milk delivered since before the snow storm. Oops. I'm sure I can find them somewhere for lunch.

John H. D. Watson said...

I got pancakes for breakfast, but they were not as good as Lestrade's.

Greg Lestrade said...

And I'm late for Sherlock and he'll be picked up in my police car and I have to go back to the Yard. Good second day

Anonymous said...

Well, the late's not ideal, but he'll adore the police car.

John H. D. Watson said...

Everything all right? ...And are you taking Sherlock back to the Yard with you?

Greg Lestrade said...

Just busy. He's in my office. I've challenged him to stay still long enough that the movement sensitive lights turn off and bet him he can't do it. I won't be too much longer

Greg Lestrade said...

And all gory photos are covered up, don't worry

REReader said...

Pancakes and a ride in a police car AND a visit to the Yard? It's a good Tuesday, isn't it, Sherlock? :)

Anonymous said...

What did you bet that Sherlock couldn't stay still? And did he win?

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

And all gory photos are covered up, don't worry

I had no doubt. How did it go?

REReader said...

I was just reading the Science Times, and they reviewed (very positively!) a book titled "The Unfeathered Bird" by Katerina van Grouw. You might want to see if there's a copy in the library, it sounds like just the sort of thing Sherlock would enjoy. :)

pandabob said...

I hope you're both doing ok Greg. :-)

How was class today John?

Greg Lestrade said...

I bet the only currency of value today, pancakes. He didn't manage it, then found out they aren't actually movement sensitive and got in a strop. I assured him he was getting special pancakes for being so good.

We're home, and he wants to do your surprise later :)

How was today? Still enjoying it? Off out anywhere?

John H. D. Watson said...

Good, thanks. Random fire alarm in the middle of it, so we all went and stood outside in the cold for what turned out to be no reason, but that was interesting too, actually. The instructor told us about a few of the stranger cases she'd worked on over the years.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - ha! Nicely done. I thought I was supposed to watch Sherlock eat an inhuman number of pancakes?

Greg Lestrade said...

He said you'd be jealous of his pancakes. Just like everyone was jealous of his police car ( he did make the lights and siren go, and then so did everyone else. Including Mrs N and some of the parents. )

John H. D. Watson said...

Aww. I am completely jealous I didn't get to make the lights go... And of his pancakes, of course.

Tina said...

Having your own police car is cool! I'd be jealous, too.

Greg Lestrade said...

You make my lights go all the time.

I expect you set the fire alarm off. Heat sensitive it will be, dr Hotson

John H. D. Watson said...

Allison blamed it on me too, for a different reason. Honestly, one incident, and they never proved anything.

Sherlock said...

What did you do? We're having crispy duck in pancakes and then pancakes AND we had them at school and I made all the hidden lights in Lestrade's car go and then he was mean to me in his office but Sally was nice and the ladies in his dinner room gave me ice cream on fruit and it was only fruit from a tin but it was still nice and are you going out tonight or can I do my surprise for you?

John H. D. Watson said...

Crispy duck! Now I really am jealous of your pancakes. I would love for you to do your surprise for me. Should I be on skype?

Sherlock said...

Yes it has to be on Skype but not yet I'm not ready yet.

You didn't say what you did to make a fire and Lestrade said that not proved is not the same as not guilty. What was the best thing your teacher said about a case?

Greg Lestrade said...

not proven, not 'not proved'.

We need to wait until after dinner has been digested to give you your surprise.

John H. D. Watson said...

Some people may have thought I had a hand in a prank involving the fire alarm and several misplaced sets of keys that ended in everyone getting locked out of the building for the rest of the day.

Hm...the one about the snake handler who was almost murdered with an injection of poison taken from the snake he worked with was pretty good.

John H. D. Watson said...

It was neither proven nor proved, I assure you, Detective Inspector.

Greg Lestrade said...

still doesn't mean you weren't guilty.

Sorry, cleaning up flour.... my little helper plus excitement plus frying pans plus bags of flour = mess.

John H. D. Watson said...

Doesn't mean I was either. :P

Sounds like you two are having fun.

thirdbird said...

I'm glad everyone is surviving John's absence so far! I have neither made nor eaten pancakes today, sadly, but I DID just go waaaaay back in this blog to search up the recipe for heart-shaped biscuits made with olive oil so I could make them for a Valentine's bake sale tonight. It made me all nostalgic. Two years ago! You were all so different back then. Thanks for entertaining us all this time, guys. <3

Anon Without A Name said...

I am about to make a hideous day much, much better with pancakes - served properly, with lemon juice and sugar :-)

Lestrade - you're doing fine, you know that right?

John - sounds like the course is interesting :-)

Sherlock - how many pancakes have you eaten so far today?

Sherlock said...

Only SIX because we're just about to have dinner and I want 5 with duck and at least 5 with blueberries and syrup and sugar and lemon The flour wasn't my fault it was in the way when I was practising flipping with the pan and it's stupid the way it gets everywhere when it falls on the floor.

What other cases has the person done that are good?

John H. D. Watson said...

Thirdbird - we were a lot different back then...I like now better. I hope the biscuits turn out well for you!

Sherlock - how did the flipping go? There was one with a little boy who reminded me of you. He travelled on his own from London all the way to Birmingham without telling anyone because he wanted to see his grandparents.

Kestrel337 said...

It is awful the way it gets everywhere. Historically, flour dust 'getting everywhere' has had tragic results. Here is a link to an image of what was left of the Washburn A Mill that exploded in 1878, when the flour dust ignited.

Sherlock said...

I wasn't allowed to see any of the good things in Lestrade's office even though he's got someone who was in a fire and photos and everything and have you done dead people in fires yet?

Kestrel337 Lestrade said that the bakery in Heathrow has to have a special explosion-proof room for the flour so if it goes BANG only the baker will be exploded.

REReader said...

if it goes BANG only the baker will be exploded.

That must be a great comfort to him (or her). ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

We have not done dead people in fires, I'm afraid. Do I get my surprise soon?

Sherlock said...

HANG ON I have to get Lestrade ready.

John H. D. Watson said...

I am HANGING ON.

Greg Lestrade said...

So...Sherlock's grinning from ear to ear, and still dancing. I think your standing ovation has gone to his head ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

You were both amazing! Best surprise ever. Makes me miss both of you even more of course, because clearly I need to hug you. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Need to hug you too. I hear the need intensifies the long it's left to brew.

Sherlock says he needs pudding pancakes now, to replace used energy...

John H. D. Watson said...

It was a fairly energetic performance...

Sherlock said...

Lestrade picked the song and he said we should wait until valentines but we've been practicing for AGES and I wanted to do it and I'm glad you liked it I bet we can do another one when you're back home.

KHolly said...

So what was the song? And what did the performance entail?

Sherlock said...

Lestrade's making a post of it.

John H. D. Watson said...

I would love to see it in person when I get home.

REReader said...

My goodness, it sounds like you've had a very excellent day, on balance, Sherlock! How many pancakes did you end up eating? (Or have you not quite finished with that yet?)

Anonymous said...

All this talk of pancakes has made me hungry. Curse you all!

Anonymous said...

It sounds like it was an excellent day. Mine was very busy, but it had lots of pancakes in it, so it was good.

John, I forgot to thank you before for the link about Pluto's moons, so Thank You. The kids at my library had fun debating the possibilities, but were disappointed they couldn't nominate "Munchkin" and "Nibble". (I find the coolest links through these blogs!)

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

I think you can, can't you? There's a write in ballot at the site.

REReader said...

I hate sleeping in strange hotel rooms--I hope you've managed to drop off again, John.

(I only skimmed through the info at the site, but I think to be considered, the names have to be part of the mythological Hades? So no munchkins or nibbles.)

Anonymous said...

Yup. The Greek mythology link did cramp our style. Although it did get a few books off the shelves! One of my kids wanted "Styxy" and "Styxyer", though. And there was a bid for a collective name of "The Dogtags" for Cerberus.

rsf

REReader said...

Ha! I thought of "the pomegranate seeds" (for Persephone) and "the sops" (for Cerberus), but "the dogtags" has much more pizzazz!

KHolly said...

RSF I think you've got such a great job. All the fun of learning and none of the hassle of exams or grading.

Sherlock said...

John I found you this

http://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelysanders/people-worse-at-cooking-than-you-food-fails

John H. D. Watson said...

I had no idea so many things could go horribly wrong with pizza... I may have done that pasta in a coffee maker one though.

Greg Lestrade said...

Pasta in a kettle I can understand.

Pasta in a coffee maker? Are you MAD? Where was the coffee??

John H. D. Watson said...

There wasn't any coffee!

Greg Lestrade said...

Then you should have made some and forgotton about the pasta! Have you no sense of priority?

John H. D. Watson said...

No, I mean, there wasn't any coffee. I would've had to go outside and purchase some and I was not up to it.

Greg Lestrade said...

still can't help but feel you somehow have a very skewed sense of priorities ;)

Don't you keep emergnecy coffee? (In case you answer 'no' to that, let me correct you. You do. It's in your shoe in the bottom of the wardrobe. Although it may possibly have been me that put it there.)

John H. D. Watson said...

This was in medical school when I was sharing a very small flat with three other people. It didn't seem to matter how much coffee we got, there was never any when I wanted it. Tragic really.

Isn't that technically your emergency coffee?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, mine's somewhere else.

Sherlock is wrapped in our duvet on the sofa. He won't tell me why.

John H. D. Watson said...

How much coffee do you have stashed around in various rooms?

Hmm. Tent? Mini blanket fort?

Greg Lestrade said...

I think he's really just missing you. But he denies it, grumpily.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. I know how he feels. I could talk to you both on skype for a bit if he wants to?

Greg Lestrade said...

You can talk to me and a sentient mound of duvet? It may grow a head at some point...

Hang on, I'll sit on the floor with the laptop so you can see the duvet-creature.

John H. D. Watson said...

It is an amazing sight...

Greg Lestrade said...

you're an amazing sight. Can't wait for you to home.

Can you even understand Mumblelock? He asked if you'd done any good deaths yet.

John H. D. Watson said...

Two more days.

He keeps asking, but I fear the answer won't change...

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, our date is pretty much organised now.

I will pick him up from school, then we're going to the park so I can have coffee, to 'make sure you're awake enough'. And have a go on the swings etc., because he hasn't been all week, apart from a few mins today, but it was cold and miserable. Then home, homework, getting ready, and he's going to call for me (With Mrs H's help.) and we're going out for sushi.

John H. D. Watson said...

and he's going to call for me

Very proper. Is he getting you flowers?

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know. But he ran off to check Mrs Hudson would be around and I think there may have been some plotting...

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure you'll have a very interesting time. And maybe I can take you out when I get back?

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe you can. You may have a lot to live up to though!

Next week? We can leave Mycroft to mind Sherlock then - and Mrs H as an extra pair of hands if needed.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, that'd be good. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

If Mycroft agrees, of course :)

Did you have homework?

John H. D. Watson said...

Mostly reading. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of reading in my future for quite a while. We can romantically read about dead and/or injured bodies together.

How are you doing?

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay. Bit tired. I have Sherlock's duvet...he still has ours. I fear I am longer than his duvet. I'll take a blanket to bed.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mm. Good plan. I hope the date tomorrow cheers both of you up.

Greg Lestrade said...

sorry, didn't get an email saying you'd commented.

I'm cheery enough. And I'm sure our date will be brilliant. He's so determined to do everything properly, it's very sweet.

Although I believe Mrs N said they were making cards tomorrow in school. So the flat will undoubtedly still be full of glitter when you get back, if I know Sherlock.

John H. D. Watson said...

The flat, dinner, the degus, your hair...

Greg Lestrade said...

exactly.

You doing anything tomorrow? Dinner with anyone? Your course-mates all bemoaning their lot about being stuck in a hotel alone on St Val's?

John H. D. Watson said...

Allison asked Sean out. I think it'll go better now that he can form complete sentences around her.

I...will probably be reading. Maybe more Indian.

Greg Lestrade said...

romance blossoming among the ill, infirm and dead? Sherlock will be disgusted.

Well...you know, make sure you enjoy yourself too. I mean, I've got a date ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. Yeah, yeah, rub it in. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

If you were here I would be rubbing it in...

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I'd enjoy that more...

Greg Lestrade said...

ha, stop it, or I'll be forced to skype you again!

John H. D. Watson said...

A dire threat...

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha - maybe I'm saving myself for your return :)

John H. D. Watson said...

hmph!
