| "Almost 30 years ago a Japanese custodian sat in front of a large A1 size sheet of white paper, whipped out a pen and started drawing the beginnings of a diabolically complex maze..." |
More about the maze at the link in the caption. I'm resisting the urge to call it amazing. Apparently I'm not resisting it very well though. I hope they decide to do prints of it because Sherlock already wants one. As a stopgap measure, he's drawing his own. I'm pretty sure his has more traps, pools of lava, and buried treasure than the original does.
I got in touch with a couple of people I know in Birmingham and in theory we'll get together while I'm there. One of them is married to a woman I used to date. Don't know if he plans on bringing her along or how awkward that will prove to be if he does. Hopefully not too bad. She threw a teacup when she broke up with me, but if she'd wanted to hit me with it, she probably would've.
Sherlock and I are cooking dinner tonight. What did he pick for the vegetable? Broccoli.

I'm sure Sherlock's maze will be equally amazing as that one ;-)
I hope you have fun catching up with people in Birmingham you'll have a real taste of freedom that you don't normally have so make the most of it :-)
Oh, definitely. And his has tigers, too...
Thanks. I think it'll be good, and I'm really looking forward to the course. It'll be good to learn something new.
Learning new stuff is always good. You've seemed really quite up for this since it was first mentioned so I hope the course is great and that, if you want to, you can find a way to do something with the knowledge afterwards :-)
I love Sherlock's creativity, its just brilliant!
As if you don't learn something new about once an hour with Sherlock around ;)
Just tell me I don't have to complete his maze before bed tonight or anything...
I'll borrow from the link and say that is mind-boggling. I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like it--even circuit boards are less complex. *boggles*
What did he pick for the vegetable? Broccoli.
LOL! That's great. :D
L - ha, fair point... Something in my field, then. Not about bats or the digestive systems of bees or how many kinds of cheese there are. Not that those aren't all interesting too.
I don't think anyone is going to complete his maze, ever. Possibly including him.
Does anyone in the world know how many cheeses there are? And on that subject, need anything? Cheese? ;)
I don't know, but we may have all of them.
We went to the cheese shop, so I would have to say that of all the things we might need...cheese is down near the bottom of the list. Right under plutonium and a bouncy Stonehenge for the flat. Leaving soon?
leaving now!
Inbetween talking about dancing and guitar-ing, will you help me get a new shirt for the wedding...one that goes with my guitar ;)
We having broccoli-cheese?
I'm glad you've got in touch with a few people in Brum. Hope you have a nice time trying to convince them this really is your life :) (I can get Sherlock to call at the right moment and explain it to them?)
Excellent. :)
We are having cheese sauce with some broccoli in it, yes. And chicken and a rice thing.
Heh. Happy to, of course. The same colour as your guitar?
They'll definitely think I'm making it up if I tell them how we met...
Make it even wilder - make it...with rockets and jets and bungee jumping from hot air balloons with lasers and flamethrowers. Make it trekking the saraha after mass murderers on the backs of camels (unless they know your history with camels...) Make it that Danger Watson was James Bond's right-hand-man!
Then when you say it was just a few murderers, and one helicopter and a moor....well, it'll seem tame and believable!
What, you don't remember the lasers? And does that make you James Bond?
your dinner sounds delicious, I'm more than slightly jealous!
I'm sure all your friends will believe your stories John its not like you haven't had mad stories to tell before is it ;-)
I'm not sure they ever believe my stories... It's probably better that way. ;)
I always believe your stories as do all the people here, I'm beginning to wonder what that says about us ;-)
I hope you're all ok and having a decent evening :-)
Hang on, if Lestrade was James Bond, does that mean he was in a tuxedo? Or intriguingly tight swimming trunks?
if Lestrade was James Bond, does that mean he was in a tuxedo? Or intriguingly tight swimming trunks?
Oooh, yes...inquiring minds want to know!
He wore the trunks under the tuxedo, of course.
I definitely wasn't painting myself as James Bond, no. That was part of the unbeliavable part. Anyone can see John is way more Bond-like. Double-oh-Danger.
Only if we're talking about some sort of Bond parody... Mycroft could certainly be Q though.
Has your phone given you any good advice today?
It told me to drink more coffee..which is always good advice :) And to 'go for a nice long ride'...but you weren't around, and I was in the BMW (yes, folks, I'm not completely averse!) on the way to speak to someone...so sort of had to ignore it.
You don't want to know my first thought when you said you were 'in the BMW'.
He wore the trunks under the tuxedo, of course
:-D
Lestrade, You're not working tomorrow, right? Perhaps you could fit a nice long ride in among the shopping and singing? You wouldn't want to disobey the phone...
Don't want to disobey? Don't dare to!
Danger - I clearly wouldn't fit...or did you mean...nah, even I don't love bikes THAT much. Or...not the BMW, anyway. I've got taste!
Ha! I'm so glad to hear it...and I'm sure the Triumph is too.
The Triumph and I are entirely happy with our rule that I go on top :)
That's probably for the best.
what colour shirt should i wear for the wedding? and a suit? Or just smart gear?
How smart is smart? I don't think I can get married and not wear a suit, unless you want me to wear my uniform or something, and I don't think you do?
Sorry, wrong wedding - I will definitely wear a suit to ours.
I meant Jo and Lisa's. I'll need to be in shirtsleeves to play the guitar. I can't play in a suit jacket. So...suit, and remove the jacket? Or just..smart yet casual all day?
Ha. I should've known that, sorry. I suppose I'm thinking about ours a lot. :)
Smart and casual will probably will be more comfortable? It's always too warm at weddings somehow.
No, that's just you always being ridiculously hot ;)
I want to go dressed as a bat.
Just out of curiosity, what would that entail, Sherlock?
L - it's all those people in too small a space!
Luckily I'll have you with me to protect my virtue this time...
I'm not sure how Jo and Lisa would feel about you wearing wings to their wedding, Sherlock.
a bat is a great thing to go to a party as but maybe not a wedding Sherlock, they tend to be a bit more shirt and tie things than wings sadly :-(
Okay but if I have to have new clothes then I want to try them on to make sure I can dance in them and you can't tell me off if I get dirty at the wedding because you can dance on the floor if they have a good floor and can I try champagne again?
When you say dance on the floor, do you mean dance? Or get down on the floor and do some sort of breakdancing? And no, you may not.
How about you dress smartly, and look at everyone else to see if there's anything you'd like for your outfit for our wedding. If you want, I'm sure you can politely ask them where they got it from, too, if you explain you'd like something similar for another wedding you're going to be best man at. I'm sure everyone would help you out.
Just dancing! What time are you going on Sunday? Who are you going to meet? Why did you go out with someone's wife and will they be angry with you for it and why did she throw a teacup?
oh, look at the time, and suddenly all these questions...
It was a long time ago. She wasn't his wife when I was going out with her, and she threw a teacup because she felt I wasn't listening to her properly. Which was probably true.
Mmhmm. And now, bed, young man.
were you not listening because you didn't want to hear her breaking up with you? Is she a doctor too? Have you ever thrown anything at Lestrade that's not a cushion because you do that a lot.
sleep well Sherlock :-)
No, only cushions. I wasn't listening to her because... I don't know. I suppose I was only listening to my own thoughts. That's not a very good answer. If you still want to know in the morning, I'll try to do better then. But now, pyjamas and brush your teeth.
He says, while spraying me with toothpaste foam,
Afk if frowing ith ood to ake Ohn isten can I frow fings if he'th nog isenin a me.
Now he's glaring at me because 'That's not what I said why did you write it stupidly!'
...If I've translated that correctly, no, throwing things is not an acceptable way to make me listen, Sherlock. Using words is much more effective.
Ooh, you got, like, a mini-Danger glare there. And a rather scathing 'How can WORDS make him listen IF HE'S NOT LISTENING?'.
I want to know how he can stretch 5 mins of teeth cleaning to now be nearly 30 mins late to bed?
you can translate that John? from toothbrush filled mouth, through predictive text and you still understand! I'm impressed, can you tell?
Anonybob - I sort of saw it coming, so to speak...
L - you can tell Sherlock that people are more likely to listen to you if you speak more softly than if you shout. Fact. He can test it.
AnonyBob - any idea at what age they can be left to do their teeth without the risk of a. not doing them or b. making a shaving-foam snowman in the sink/mixing a potion/finding out how big a toilet roll goes when soaked in water etc.?
I guess that helps but still I'm impressed :-)
The talking softly thing is amazing, you can quieten a classroom of 30 teenagers by getting slowly quieter when speaking.
49 possibly ;-)
49? Huh.
John...will you come and watch me do my teeth? ;)
Only if you promise to let me make shaving foam snowmen in the sink...
...why did I even use that as an example?
Because it's fun? :)
You're as bad as Sherlock.
Watch out, next thing I'll be wearing a bat costume to Jo and Lisa's wedding...
Like this? I think that might be rude...stealing the show from the brides...
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110112054333/batman/images/a/a3/NealAdamsBatman.jpg
Nah, more like this:
http://c365.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/mens-halloween-bat-fancy-dress-costume.jpg
well that's your outfits sorted for your wedding then, no suits just a bat theme. I'm sure you can find a haunted house to have the ceremony in :-)
would we have to say our vows dangling upside down?
why not? it would be quite fun, Sherlock would love it. Mycroft, I'm thinking, maybe not so much ;-)
Better clear it with your dance teacher, too...just for safety's sake, of course. Don't want to be tripping on wings, you know! :)
I will be forever grateful that Sherlock is being raised by people who share his flare for ridiculous fantasy.
I shall live in hope that he will come to appreciate it is not enjoyed by everyone at all times.
Ah, you're so optimistic... ;)
Mycroft you are an amazing big brother :-)
I hope you are working hard at school ready for your holiday.
I am indeed.
I trust your children are also looking forward to the break?
yes they are Mycroft, thank you for asking :-)
I hope your hard work now means you can relax properly in your holidays, time is hurrying past so quickly!
I have, thankfully, achieved the results expected of me in my mock GCSEs. Whilst I won't be relaxing, I do feel confident that I will be well equipped to face the real exams this summer, thank you.
well done you :-)
Way to go, Mycroft!
The results expected of you... You did brilliantly! We're very proud of you, you know. :)
Well done, Mycroft. You're taking them a couple of years early? That's really very impressive :-)
Are you taking them all this year, or some this year and some next year?
I am only sitting three this year.
Thank you, everyone.
You could take a few extra, in my name, Mycroft ;)
Seriously, as John said, we're incredibly proud of you. Not just the results, but the dedication you've shown, the work you've done, the way you've conducted yourself even when everything here is a total shambles. You've done brilliantly.
I think he's only a year early, Nameless...although I'm no expert on exams ;)
15 when he does these ones, this summer, 16 next year. Is that the usual age?
Lestrade - yes, you're right, I was getting myself confused because Mycroft's 14 at the moment, I managed to forget that he'll be 15 in a couple of month's time.
But taking three GCSE's a year early is immensely impressive, and no doubt a testament to Mycroft's hard work and dedication :-)
It truly is. He hopes to be starting the A levels, or whatever they do now, next year. He shows great commitment to his learning.
Whereas Sherlock tried to handcuff himself to the oven this morning...
Sherlock has a commitment to learning new stuff, just not to necessarily doing it in school
Absolutely, Anon. And especially so when John and I are off together. Its touching, really.
Well, knowing EVERYTHING is a full time job, after all! ;)
How's your day been gentlemen? Have you had a fun one?
How was school Sherlock, did you learn anything you might be able to teach us?
We have.
Sherlock's in a bit of a grump because he got put in the thinking corner today, for not putting his hand up in class. He is a tad indignant.
oh dear, I hope he cheers up soon.
I'm glad you and John have had a good day together :-)
That is a hard one, especially when the subject is interesting.
Have a good evening!
Have you been listening to the new series of Cabin Pressure? They had a game on the last episode, where you have two films that work as a question and answer, like Who framed Roger Rabbit? Batman.
Anyone got any good ones?
I haven't heard that one yet but I am loving the new series so far.
Yeah, I haven't heard the most recent episode - don't tell us what happens! But the others have been great. Although the little King reminded me of someone....
What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Jaws.
Although that probably stretches the definition of good beyond breaking point :-p
Good day, gents?
Dude, where's my car? Paris, Texas
Fairly successful. Got a shirt. Went for a run. Enjoyed spending time with my lovely boyfriend. Played my guitar.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Spiderman.
That sort of thing?
Precisely! What's the worst that could happen? Armageddon
Heh, cool game!
O Brother, Where Art Thou? Home Alone.
Quo Vadis? To Rome with Love. :)
They shoot horses, don't they? The good, the bad and the ugly.
(Sherlock is very grumpy that he doesn't know many film titles.)
Would it help to expand it to book titles?
I don't know many either Sherlock! we can be grumpy together ;-)
Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? Fried Green Tomatoes.
(Although I suppose that would actually be the answer to What is Killing etc.... :D)
(And I've just about used up my stock of movie title questions!)
Oh, and I take it back! The answer should really be The Grapes of Wrath!
I'm not grumpy! I'm telling John what to pack for his time away.
That is important.
Like what? (Aside from Spider, who you already took care of.)
I'll be grumpy on my own then :-(
Its good that John has you to make sure he packs the important stuff Sherlock :-)
I'll be grumpy with you. I'm pretty terrible at thinking of film titles.
Note 'telling' not suggesting :)
You won't be able to see John and the bike under the huge mound of stuff.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7yD65zCeyyM/Th9BnxyIB8I/AAAAAAAAAHY/OiG4g9IKxcE/s1600/overloaded_003.jpg
yay grumpy likes company ;-)
How do you carry your stuff on your bike John? you'll need a lot for a week won't you?
L got me bags that fit on it, and I think those well be enough. If not, I can take a backpack too, but I really don't need that much. Unless I listen to Sherlock...
in the minimalist packing don't forget your party clothes will ya ;-)
Its nice Sherlock's 'helping' you pack, better than the other option I would say :-)
If you listen to Sherlock then you need to take Sherlock...
He definitely won't fit in my bags... Nor will you, unfortunately.
Having seen plenty of body parts in bags... I can say I probably would, if you chopped me small enough ;)
But you'd get all over my clothes... I prefer you unminced.
I assumed you'd be wearing my skin ;)
Yeah, until you grow long enough arms to have a proper tank bag, it's best you leave me at home, unminced. Afterall, you would have to take Sherlock with you if you minced me.
I'm sure the dress code for this course is fairly relaxed, but I feel they'd frown on me wearing other people.
Long enough arms, hmph.
I'm sure the dress code for this course is fairly relaxed, but I feel they'd frown on me wearing other people.
you won't like the suggestion I just made on the other blog then!
Is riding on a motorcycle with panniers anything like riding on a bicycle with panniers? If so, I suggest a practice ride or two--when I ride with a bag on the back of my bike it changes the center of gravity slightly, acceleration, braking times, etc.
Though a 10 lb bag of clothes won't throw off a 500 lb bike the way it'll throw off a 25 lb bike. If that makes sense. It probably doesn't. I'm sure you're fine. Also I'm going to go drink more coffee now. Hope you gents are having a lovely day. :)
-Ella
Spandrella - it does indeed change the centre of gravity a bit, but happily his bags won't weigh nearly as much as I do, and he's fine with me riding pillion, so I'm sure he'll be okay.
I have tried it, yeah, but thanks for the suggestion. Don't worry, when it comes to motorbike safety, Lestrade usually has it covered. :)
...No, make that 'always'. He's very, very careful. Probably a lot more so than I would be without him around, which I'm sure is a good thing.
Yeah I definitely had a "what the hell am I talking about, he's fine" reaction more or less immediately after posting. :)
I now have visions of a Lestrade app on John's phone (rather like Mycroft & Sherlock's app on Lestrade's) that says things like "Are you wearing all your leathers?" and "Please get asparagus to cook for dinner tonight" and "My feet are cold."
-Ella
The 'my feet are cold' could, apparently, just be a permanent banner...
I might be having too much fun with this.
"There is not enough coffee in all the world."
"Is that a sock on your head, or are you just happy to see me?"
"Stop resisting arrest, it's annoying."
-Ella
L - only when you're at home...or wading in the Thames...
(Mycroft, if you make one, please include the phrase 'Would you like me to make you some more custard creams?')
