perils of the internet

I met with one of the people on my interview list today. We were scheduled to meet next week, but she had some time and called to ask if I were free, so we had lunch. She seems nice. We chatted for a while. And then she admitted that she'd googled me. And found the blogs. And I felt as if I'd showed up to the meeting in nothing but my pants.

So. That was interesting. I suppose I have to assume that people are going to do that. I'm lucky Sarah didn't, really. Although in a way, it might save a lot of time. If someone doesn't want to meet me after reading the blogs, I wouldn't have wanted to work with them anyway, so there's that.

Dr A (not even her actual initial; I'm calling them A, B, C etc for now) seemed fine with the madhouse that is my life and said she might even keep reading, at least until we get Sherlock bone-chandelier up, because she wants to see how it turns out. (So, if you're reading this...hello.)

It's an odd feeling. Partly because I'm used to presenting a professional front, but also partly because until L and the boys, there hasn't been all that much that... You know, even as I type that sentence, I realise it's not true. If I'd been keeping a blog in my thirties...probably anyone reading it would've thought I was writing fiction. Anyway. Odd day.

If you do show up to a meeting in only your pants, please ensure you blog about it.

Hello Dr A.

I'd blog about it, but no pictures. Have to draw the line somewhere.

That's sort of brilliant in a odd kind of way John :-)

I hope the interviews lead to something perfect for you :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks. :) Seems to be going well so far.

Shall I start putting up encouraging thing for potential employers?

"There's no one I'd rather meet over a dead body than Dr J 'Danger' Watson!"

"When I'm at a busy crime scene, my heart soars when I see the dishy Doc Hotson heading towards my body!"

That'd help, right? ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh...definitely...

Going to hide under a blanket now...

And so should you, you look asleep on your feet.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've been about 97% under a blanket since I got home!

But I'm going. Wouldn't do to disobey such a brilliant and caring Doctor.

John H. D. Watson said...

97% percent doing paperwork isn't the same!

Uh huh... I'm just glad most of the pictures of me with food hanging out of my mouth weren't posted recently.

Greg Lestrade said...

No, but now Dr's A, B and C know what to look for.

(Don't worry, Mycroft's taught him some table manners since then.)

Anyway, they'll find the one of you in a dress first.

C'mon, you can soothe my fevered brow or something.

At least I look like I've got half a brain in that one. Even if it's accompanied by horrific fashion sense.

I shall do my best.

I've already said this on L's blog.
But Anthea I'm sorry please don't hurt me.

There's a reason why I blog under a pseudonym, and why I haven't told anyone I know in real life where my blog is (well, I think I told one person). I think it takes some courage to blog under your real name.

I've been blogging under Piplover since I first started. For safety reasons I don't use my real name (I have a bit of a stalker ex), but I do post pictures of myself sometimes. I think if it's something I don't mind sharing with people I work with in an office, it's all right to post online.

REReader said...

Like you, Pip, I've used REReader since I first had an online presence. I would have used my real name, but my mom had fits at the idea, and it surely wasn't worth upsetting her about. But I've been gradually moving my online presence to my real name, I find it easier.

John, I would think that someone reading these blogs before meeting with you would only give you an advantage! (Or, as you say, weed out people you wouldn't want to work with anyway.) But yeah, suddenly realizing that someone had would be kind of disconcerting... O_O

You always look like you've got lots of brains, Danger. But the one where you've got food hanging from your mouth makes it seem they're probably in jars in the cupboard for you to eat...

pandabob said...

How's you this morning Mr? Feeling less rubbish? I hope so :-)

Have a good day Sherlock you too John :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Am packing Sherlock off to school then going back to bed, if that answers your question.

pandabob said...

Oh dear :-( that's really not good :-( I hope a day in bed sorts you out and you feel like yourself really soon :-)

I don't know Anonyboby, it could be taken as a good sign - working with the body, rather than against it ;)

L, hope you're feeling better (or the Doc) later ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

just feel like my head got stuck in a vice. i'm sure i'll be fine soon.

John - I've always been paranoid about the stuff I put online. Several people who know me in person, know one or more of my online pseudonyms, but (hopefully) no-one who knows me only by one or other of my pseudonyms is able to establish from who I am. OTOH, like you say, would you want to work with people who are put off by the blogs?

Lestrade - I hope you feel much better soon...

Greg Lestrade said...

There is definitely nothing off-putting about him, is there? (The rest of us, maybe ;) )

I am currently sampling his bedside manner. How much tea do you have to drink to get tea-poisoning? And what are the symptoms? I imagine I'd be like a biscuit...go soggy, fall apart?

Anonymous said...

I've always found spicy curry to be a wonderful decongestant. ;)

Feel better soon.

pandabob said...

You can never drink enough tea apparently although I've never had any so I'm not an expert ;-)

You sound like you're feeling a bit brighter so the tea and the attentive doc are obviously doing the trick. :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Spandrella - no need to give John ideas about curry.

AnonyBob - yeah, it's not such a bad way to spend the day. Except for the coughing, sneezing, snotty parts ;)

pandabob said...

Can I borrow him when you're better?

Sherlock said...

It's not fair Lestrade gets to come to the park even if he's ill and if I'm ill and don't go to school I can't come to the park but he can even when he hasn't been to work!

REReader said...

Don't you want him in the park with you, Sherlock?

I hope you're feeling a bit better, L.

Sherlock said...

I do but that isn't the point it's not fair!

John H. D. Watson said...

The difference is that he's sitting on a park bench, whereas when you go to the park you run around at top speed scaring birds and trying to climb everything in sight. Which, although he is an adult, I would still discourage him from trying right now.

Greg Lestrade said...

Spoilsport. I wanted to climb a tree and chase some pigeons.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mmhmm. How about another tissue instead?

Greg Lestrade said...

There's nothing wrong with my sleeve. And I've got a second one, in reserve... ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

As long as you don't start eyeing mine...

Greg Lestrade said...

there are many parts of you I eye. Your sleeves aren't high on the list.

John H. D. Watson said...

My sleeves and I are all pleased by that news. Do you want to get coffee on the way home?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I guess, if you want?

John H. D. Watson said...

Mm. Maybe just straight home then. Where's your scarf?

Greg Lestrade said...

Around Sherlock's head?

Anonymous said...

Wow, a halfhearted response to coffee. You must be sick.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ah, of course. Have mine then.

kholly - always the most worrying symptom, yes.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fine. Just 99% liquid after all the tea I've drunk.

Anon Without A Name said...

There's no such thing as too much tea. Just to be clear on that point.

Small Hobbit said...

Rather belatedly seconding Nameless' post.
