whales and bodies

I'm stuck in a police station, so I thought I'd put a post together. I haven't been arrested (this isn't Egypt after all); they want me to look at someone else, but he hasn't been brought in yet. So I'm waiting. Have been for quite a while.

As L mentioned, we went to see the beached whale sculpture... I believe it's a sperm whale.

And we got a boat back...

Sherlock kept a careful watch for corpses in the water the entire time. And was sure to mention it to everyone who asked what he was looking for so diligently.

Pride and Mycroft's homecoming are both next week. Sherlock's started talking about giant sparkly bat wings to replace his old wings, along with face paint, capes, roller skates, hot air balloons... Basically all the things he also wants our wedding to include. The most reasonable is the chocolate fountain, and he's not going to win on that - L has strong feelings about low quality chocolate.

The coffee here is really, truly horrible. Like a punishment from on high. Thou shalt drink swill until thine solve rates are up? Maybe they're hiding the good stuff and this is what they keep for visitors?

Something's happening, got to go.

Good luck with finding something which will satisfy Sherlock's sparkle-loving soul at Pride. Perhaps for the wedding he can make table centerpieces you can use at the reception (if you have one) and then the glitter can be contained by the tablecloths when it comes time to clean up.

Is police coffee worse than army coffee? Air Force coffee was enough to make me swear off the stuff for life after only one attempt.

John H. D. Watson said...

And someone else can clean it up, hopefully...

The stuff I've had at L's office is good! This is... I'm not completely sure this is even coffee. Worse than Army coffee...hm. It's worse than some Army coffee, but definitely not all.

rsf said...

Yes, the "someone else cleaning it up" factor did occur to me. I've just been introduced to the joys of very large rolls of butcher paper for table covers, which are making clean up at the library a lot easier, but the glitter still escapes.

I don't know whether to wish you something exciting to report back to Sherlock tonight or a quiet shift that gets you home soon even if you're a bit bored, so I'll let you decide which. Good night!

Sherlock-made centerpieces could be a special addition to your wedding, good idea, rsf! (If it works with the rest of the plans, of course.)

The beached whale sculpture looks very realistic even on a lawn instead of a riverbank, at least in that photo it does! Did you get to go close to it?

I hope you got to go home before drowning in a vat of possibly-not-coffee, John. (And that you filled out Sherlock's log adequately. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

John got home, grunted and pretty much fell into bed - still unconscious now! Sherlock wants to wake him. He's losing that fight.

Sherlock said...

Can we make this pleeeaaaase? It would be good!

Maybe during the holidays.

Come on, if you're very gentle you can wake John up while I hold his breakfast tray. And you can carry the flowers into him in the vase so I don't drop them on his pancakes or something. Just be careful and don't just jump on him.

That cake looks marvelous, and with allergy friendly substitutions right on the recipe page!

(and that wake up committee sounds marvelous as well)

Greg Lestrade said...

I think he'd have preferred to sleep all day...but he'd have regretted that come tonight and tomorrow morning :)

Sherlock and I headed out to leave him in peace earlier - needed to do something to remove Sherlock from the vicinity ;) So I had a long run and he had a bike ride.

REReader said...

That sounds like fun!

(How'd Lestrade do, Sherlock? Do you think he's in racing form yet? :))

That cake makes me lightheaded just looking at the picture! That is a LOT of chocolate!

Sherlock said...

He's okay he can't run as fast as I can go on my bike but he's faster than me running but that's because he's got longer legs.

Now he's listening to loads of music and keeps turning off one song and starting another and it's annoying.

REReader said...

Longer legs is definitely an unfair advantage--he'd have to give you a handicap if you raced him. I bet you can change directions faster, though, so you might win on a twisty race course!

Is Lestrade maybe looking for music for the wedding? That could take a while, but it would take longer if he listened to every song all the way through.

How are your caterpillars doing?

Anonymous said...

Have you picked up Mycroft yet, or is Anthea bringing him home?

Sherlock said...

We're going soon Anonymous but we're not bringing him home because that's not until next week and we could have gone ages ago but he was doing some boring stuff on a SUNDAY and then it was their lunch and we're going and we'll have cake and tea and if it's not raining maybe go and walk the dogs with him.

I think Lestrade is looking for music for the wedding and it's boring and lots of them are really bad.

My caterpillars are getting bigger and eating lots.

REReader said...

Yay for growing caterpillars!

It's a pity Mycroft had to do boring stuff on a Sunday, but a big tea is nice, and he'll have more fun having got the boring stuff out of the way. :)

(Yes, a lot of wedding-y music is pretty awful. I think you can be sure Lestrade will pick some really good music in the end, though--he knows so much really good music!)

Mycroft said...

It wasn't boring, Sherlock. It was a talk given by my astronomy tutor regarding the 'super moon'.

pandabob said...

That sounds like it would be really interesting Mycroft :-)

Have a lovely time together all of you :-)

rsf said...

Did you all go out to see it last night, Mycroft? (I had to google to find out what a "supermoon" is, since it's a recent term, but I did notice that the rising moon was lovely and large yesterday.)

When I was in college we made a "measuring stick" to prove that the moon at the top of the sky was the same size as the moon on the horizon, but I never thought to use it more than the one night. Did you do any experiments to prove that the moon was larger when it's at perigee?

John H. D. Watson said...

L - thanks again for the chance to remain unconscious a bit longer. And breakfast in bed almost makes staying out half the night appealing...

Greg Lestrade said...

You really don't have to stay out half the night to get breakfast in bed. In fact, I'd fight against it.

But you needed sustenance before interrogation-by-Sherlock.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'd fight against it too...but as you always say, no one made me take the job. ;) It was a very nice way to wake up though, interrogation and all.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad you liked it. Sounds like you deserved it, after a...difficult night.

And there's even a tiny bit of blue sky emerging in time to walk with our boys and their dogs - nice end to the weekend.

Mycroft said...

I believe, Lestrade, that you have 'jinxed' us with your last comment.

Not that the dogs mind, but Anthea might, when we give them back to her completely soaked and dripping.

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah...that might have been my fault.

Although, Sherlock, I'm fairly sure no one had noticed John and I were kissing until you yelled 'stop kissing' across the street!

(It just rained. Very very hard.)

Sherlock said...

I noticed. Are you going to do that lots at your wedding? It looks slimy like when the dogs lick your face.

John H. D. Watson said...

We'll just put the kissing in the logbook. Then we're fine to carry on, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

We might very possibly do it lots, yes. And no, not like the dogs. Lestrade's breath only smells of coffee. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh Sherlock, last of the romantics!

We will definitely do it at certain points where tradition dictates we should. And possibly at quite a lot of other times, too. And I'm afraid other people might, too - people find weddings romantic!

Thanks, Danger. I think. I do hang my tongue out and pant on occasion, though ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Only appropriate occasions, generally.

people find weddings romantic!

Speaking of which...in a way... Did I tell you Harry's planning to ask Clara to go with her? I don't know as what. Maybe just friends. It'd be nice to see Clara again though.

Greg Lestrade said...

You didn't, no. Well...I hope they both have a lovely time. As friends or whatever.

Did I tell you that I spent this morning becoming obsessed with wedding stationary and music? You may have created a monster.

John H. D. Watson said...

I hope so too.

You did not... How's that going?

Greg Lestrade said...

I have...ideas.

But you need to...I don't know. And this will sound stupid, and probably horrible wrong...but I feel like, I've...done this once. And this will - I very much hope - be the only time you ever do :) So I want it to be perfect for you. Just as you want it. So we need to talk about it :)

John H. D. Watson said...

It doesn't sound stupid, love. And I would be happy to talk about it. You can show me what you've looked at later?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, sure :)

Sherlock said...

If you're not having a chocolate fountain you definitely should have a cake I can get in and sparklers.

Greg Lestrade said...

We're not having a cake you can fit inside.

I saw a cake made of cheeses the other day. Looked amazing.

John H. D. Watson said...

Nothing but cheeses?

rsf said...

The problem with cakes that people can fit inside is that they're not really cake. They're mostly cardboard with a little bit of cake around the edge.

One of my friends got married to selections from Holst's "The Nine Planets", which I liked better than the usual music.

Greg Lestrade said...

it was a bit like this one:

http://capclassique.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/kj017.jpg

Sherlock said...

you PROMISED at the very start when John said about the wedding we could have chocolate cake.

John H. D. Watson said...

That's very nice. Much better than the cake made of meat I saw a while ago.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock is now hanging off John, looking anguished, saying 'Cake should only be made of cake!'.

REReader said...

I am forced to agree--at least when it comes to eating-type cakes... :)

(Although cakes can be made partly of chocolates, if the recipe Sherlock found earlier is anything to go by!)

John H. D. Watson said...

He's not buying the more-than-one-cake possibility...or rather, he thinks there should be many cakes, all made of cake.

Greg Lestrade said...

I fear I did actually once upon a time say we'd have at least a layer of cake that was chocolate.

Anyway, bedtime for small Sherlock's.

And sensible(ish) wedding talk for you and me.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sensible talk + cheese cake...

REReader said...

There's also chocolate cheese cake...and cherry cheese cake... and now I want cheesecake.

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe we can go for a...small cheese cake. Or something.

Along with an actual 'wedding' cake, with....well, whatever you want.

John H. D. Watson said...

Chocolate, apparently! Which is fine. I like chocolate. What do you want?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, chocolate is good. Maybe like...two layers? Three? One chocolate, one...not. Fruit or sponge that isn't chocolatey?

REReader said...

Or a coffee (or mocha) layer?

John H. D. Watson said...

Raspberry or something maybe?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah? I'm happy with anything like that. Nice fresh fruits...maybe cream? We can have it so the layers are properly separate, no contact between them.

You watching the tennis, John?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not now, but I saw Federer and Hanescu earlier. I'll watch Murray later probably if I can distract Sherlock sufficiently.

REReader said...

Or if you can interest him sufficiently! Watching tennis has a hypnotic charm... :)

Anonymous said...

It was the Federer match I had in mind, it was a massacre wasn't it? If you'd turned over late you'd have missed it, here's to all his matches being that easy!

Greg Lestrade said...

Am I destined to talk to myself for the next two weeks? :)

When did you want us to go?

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll talk to you about tennis... :)

Dunno, when can you go?

Anon - yeah, it was... fast. Not that I'd expect trouble in that match, but as you say, hope the rest are that easy.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure I'm late to this...but isn't Nadal meant to be good?

John H. D. Watson said...

It must've been his knee. I can't imagine what else could've happened.

Greg Lestrade said...

Can we work it out so he comes and sits with Mrs Hudson for the rest of wimbledon? They can discuss knees and hips and drink tea and pick on the other tennis players.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. He'd probably enjoy it. Mrs Hudson can cheer anyone up.

You sound like my friend….her boyfriend has been distracted by the Stanley Cup playoffs for like the last six weeks. Don't remember the last time she had a proper date with him. But this week is the FINAL and BOSTON (his team) is in the FINAL so there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
