leather daddy

As in the father of one of Sherlock's classmates, wearing leather, because he showed up on his bike. Nice man. He pulled up this morning to drop his son off and recognised and we chatted a bit. I think we met him briefly at Sherlock's sports day a few months ago, but the bike is new (and I suspect inspired by Lestrade's). Who knows, maybe Mrs T will be next...

I've been walking since I dropped Sherlock off, more or less. Stopping in parks and cafes and so on. Might just stay out until it's time to pick him up. L - you want to get lunch at any point?

Is it the thought of Lestrade all in leather that's keeping you awake - 'cos it sounds good to me!

Anon Without A Name said...

You still feeling restless, John?

Greg Lestrade said...

You okay love? Lunch would be brilliant.

SH - out of leather and in a suit now, you can rest easy. It was bloody cold riding in. But amazing sunrise almost made up for it.

Rider said...

Heated handgrips Lestrade, you know you want to!

(and you better get yourself an oversuit because wet leather in winter is hypothermia in action. Don't ask me how I know this.)

Desert Wanderer said...

That...is an odd assortment of tags, John. You alright?

Greg Lestrade said...

John, I'm guessing you either haven't been home or you're on your way here? Anyway, just...call me, or...something? You're phone's going to answerphone. I'm free whenever you want me to be. And I can't pretend I'm not worried.

Anonymous said...

Rider, I read 'heated handgrips' in that first sentence as a kind of scooby doo exclamation. Made me wonder what exactly Lestrade wanted to do...

I'm considering using it as such in the future, though I fear I may end up sounding like Arthur from Cabin Pressure: "Heated handgips, Skip!"

John H. D. Watson said...

L - sorry, I'm fine. I forgot to turn the vibrate thing on and I think I wasn't hearing it ring over the traffic. Hungry?

Greg Lestrade said...

Could do with a sandwich and some proper coffee.

You nearby? I can come down and meet you.

Got a big hug waiting for you...

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks. Be there in about five minutes.

Greg Lestrade said...

Won't be wearing leather though, sorry. Just a boring grey suit. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

You might want your jacket at least. Seems cold out for not actually being very cold. Maybe it's just me though.

Greg Lestrade said...

No, not just you. But my jacket over a suit isn't a good look. We'll go somewhere warm.

You been out since this morning?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, just thought I'd take a walk. Turned into a...longer walk.

X said...

I agree with DW -- the tags to the post are a bit more concerning than the content in it, so I hope everything is all right John. <3. Enjoy your lunch with DI GQMF, too. :)

L, thanks for the warning regarding your leathers. I'm sure you raised the temperature a few meters around you by amfew degrees today. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well I'm glad it ended up with me seeing you.

Get anything you fancy for dinner.

Love you

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you too. See you later.

Nameless, DW, and X - I'm all right. Just...yeah, restless is the word I suppose.

Greg Lestrade said...

Tell Sherlock that Molly says 'hi' and she's very sorry, she doesn't have any spare body parts he can have.

You and he out with Snoopy, danger? You'll have walked most of London by tonight.

Greg Lestrade said...

(and I'm glad I didn't see the tags until after I saw you. Mobile doesn't show them. I'd have been a lot more worried than I was.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, we just got back. Snoopy's really training Sherlock pretty well in patience and slowing down. It's funny to watch. More like he's walking Sherlock.

Greg Lestrade said...

The old dog teaching the young pup new tricks? Sounds like Snoops is doing a better job than we humans manage.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think he is. Even Sherlock can't argue with a dog. Well. Not effectively at least.

Greg Lestrade said...

Good practice for him to deal with us when we're old and grey. Older and greyer in my case.

I feel about 100 at the moment. And aging rapidly.

What did you pick for dinner?

John H. D. Watson said...

Chicken, stuff, and things. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Wonderful. I'll try not to be much longer. Am going to bring paperwork home.

Has Mrs T made further noises re pond? At lwastdigging will keep us warm.

Desert Wanderer said...

"lwastdigging"?

No wonder poor Nicky was confused if you were throwing around terms like that!

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe we could do it while Mycroft's home? I don't know if he'd want to help, but I'm sure it'll be amusing to watch.

John H. D. Watson said...

lwastdigging

I didn't even notice that one...

Also: http://twitpic.com/7339c3 heh

Greg Lestrade said...

At least digging, that should have said.

Nicky wasn't confused, just terrified :)

Danger - yeah, he can supervise. Or help when we've broken ourselves. Do you have any idea how much soil we'd be moving? Going on Sherlock's last design, we'd be looking at 7-8 tonnes. And that's if it's not too wet.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think it's been downsized slightly. I'll see if I can get a final design from her tomorrow, minus Sherlock's tiger pits and venus fly traps. I don't think we're getting any sort of machinery in there to dig for us though - not without taking out a section of the fence.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well it should be a few metres sq, to give the critters a chances to escape the kids.

Digging will be okay. Make us fit, anyway. Once I'm a strapping lad again maybe you'll stop looking at leather daddies...

I'm going to leave in a minute.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. It was just the one, I don't make a habit of it.

True. And rocks to hide under would be good as well. Lots of things to hide under. Oh, and apparently pitcher plants and I think he said cobra lilies will grow outside all year round.

Greg Lestrade said...

Can I have a fuck to hide under?

Glad it's not a habit. When us Mycroft home, Friday night or Saturday?

And my autocorrect tried to call you sabre earlier. Which isn't a bad name, if youre an alsatian, I guess.

Greg Lestrade said...

A rock! A rock. I meant rock.

John H. D. Watson said...

Friday night. He wants you to pick him up if you can.

A rock! A rock. I meant rock.

Ha! Sure you did.

Anonymous said...

... Your phone certainly has a mind of its own. Or does it? ;)

*giggles*

But on a more serious note, is everything all right? Why do you want to hide under a rock?

*hugs all around*

-A from NW

Small Hobbit said...

Awesome response there Lestrade. So we now definitely know what's on your mind ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I can pick him up provided he doesn't want to bring home his entire room.

A - just...tired. haven't quite caught up since Italy. It's been playing on my mind a bit. And now we've got a new case that's a big grim. But I'm fine. Nothing hugging Danger to bits won't cure.

I meant rock.

John H. D. Watson said...

Knowing Mycroft, I'm sure he has it all planned out for maximum efficiency.

Want some tea?

Greg Lestrade said...

coffee? Actually, no, tea's good.

And yes, I'm sure he does. Glad he likes the bike enough to request it.

You feeling okay after your trek around London?

Rider said...

SH, as if we were in any doubt!

John H. D. Watson said...

Pretty much. Blister, minor aches, nothing worth mentioning...even though I just have.

Alternately, hot chocolate with brandy in it?

Greg Lestrade said...

did it help? I mean, I know riding the bike around helps me think about stuff. I'll be more than happy to assist with minor aches in a bit.

Brandy with brandy in it?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, okay.

I don't really know. Maybe a bit.

Greg Lestrade said...

Want to talk about it? (privately or in front of the entire internet, either way.) or just...not.

If I can help then I want to.

(now that I'm reasonably sure your tags/post title don't mean 'Lestrade, sorry about this, but I've been thinking about it for ages, and I don't know the best way to say it, but I've been losing sleep whilst thinking about it and it's not getting any better...I regret you moving in - everything, in fact, and am running away with a leather-clad Daddy.')

:)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha, no. I promise you, no plans to run off with him, or any other leather clad men (or women) I might happen to meet in the future.

Maybe when we go to bed. Just give me a hug and let me think about it a bit more first, all right?

Greg Lestrade said...

No rush.

Let your chicken, stuff and things soak up some brandy and let me get my daily quota of Danger-hugs. And tell me whenever you're ready, even if t's not tonight.

John H. D. Watson said...

Thank you.

Greg Lestrade said...

We need to make the Christmas cake while Mycroft's home. Bit late, but September was a bit busy. You have to help. Everyone does.

John H. D. Watson said...

Late? But...how is it going to last until Christmas?

Greg Lestrade said...

We're going to make two, for starters, and then lock both of them well out of Sherlock's reach. That's the first step of making it last...

And yes, Christmas cake should be made in September, I think. Although some people say October, so we'll just pretend that's what we intended...

In fact, this brandy might be brandy I bought for the cake. (ours. The one for the boys will be fed spiced apple juice. the one for you, me, Mrs Hudson and Mrs Holmes will be well fed with brandy. Or rum if you prefer.)

Anonymous said...

My American is showing, but what is Christmas cake exactly? Is it like fruit cake? It sounds good!

John H. D. Watson said...

...All right. I am...mildly dubious, but everything else you've made is good, so I'll trust you. The Christmas cakes I've had up till now have not been... I was looking for a better word, but I'm just going to go with good. They have been, in fact, not good at all.

Greg Lestrade said...

Piplover - yes, a very rich, dark fruit cake, covered in marzipan and then icing.

The reason you need to make it early is to feed it up for Christmas. As in, skewer it and feed it rum or brandy every week or fortnight all the way from now 'til Christmas. Then it's really moist.

need to make the pudding, too.

Anonymous said...

That sounds really good! But how does it not go moldy before Christmas? Is it the alcohol?

starbright said...

Ooh. Are you going to give us the recipe for that too?

Greg Lestrade said...

Piplover - it's essentially dried fruit, sugar and lots and lots of booze, so there's not a lot to go off! You just need to keep it in a tin, and wrapped up. It'll keep for about three months. Or you can freeze it for longer.

Starbright - yes, I can find a recipe to post.

You do need to ice it just before Christmas.

John H. D. Watson said...

My great aunt used to give us three. Every year. Without fail. That's more than half a cake per person.

Greg Lestrade said...

I promise you don't have to have any if you don't like it.

And there'll only be two because of the booze aspect.

Most people don't like it because it's dry and a bit boring. This won't be. Promise.

John H. D. Watson said...

I believe you! As I said, everything you make is good.

Do you think you could do extra so we could send one to Murray? He'll be at Camp Bastion over Christmas. I'll tell him this one's for eating and not seeing how far he can chuck them.

Greg Lestrade said...

it's not. I just try not to feed the bad stuff to anyone else.

Course we could do extra. I'm sure Mycroft will be happy to spend time in the new kitchen!

Tell him not to let it near any naked flames. Or go on duty after eating any...

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. You've done remarkably well at keeping the bad stuff from me then.

Thanks. I'll help too if you tell me what to do.

Greg Lestrade said...

we all have to stir it. And make wishes. And all that.

Well I do make sure I taste everything as I cook it, so try not to give you lot anything too grim. It's nice. I sort of stopped caring for a while, when it was just me. Nice to make the effort now.

John H. D. Watson said...

Did you and Nicky and everyone do all that growing up?

Greg Lestrade said...

No. The only traditions in our house were drink and fighting.

But I always wanted to.

John H. D. Watson said...

So did I. Well. Not the cake so much, after having had Aunt Penny's. But the rest of the traditional stuff.

Greg Lestrade said...

Do the boys have stockings and stuff? I sort of missed last Christmas with you all, it being...early days. And everything.

John H. D. Watson said...

Enormous ones. With beads and sequins and...fuzzy stuff. Angora? And bells on the toes. Their grandmother knitted them.

Greg Lestrade said...

right.

I'm imagining they won't be satisfied with a satsuma and some brazil nuts, then?

Rider said...

My mother used to start the Christmas cake about October, but I don't recall it getting fed as such.

Wasn't dry though, so maybe she did and I just don't remember. It was more or less fruit held together with a light dusting of cake though...

John H. D. Watson said...

they won't be satisfied with a satsuma and some brazil nuts

Heh. No, but it's all right - their mum does it, or at least she did last year.

Greg Lestrade said...

right. Well, I reckon she's got a lot in common with Santa. She definitely knows when you've been good or bad...

Rider - yes, Christmas cake should be mainly fruit, just about hanging together with cake. I make it in a saucepan.

Small Hobbit said...

I've never made my Christmas cake in a saucepan, so look forward to seeing your recipe, having done the same one for more years than I care to remember.

John H. D. Watson said...

She sees you when you're sleeping, she knows when you're awake... Hm. I'm seeing the similarities, yes.

What are the odds of getting her to pose for a photo in a Santa hat do you think?

Greg Lestrade said...

You ask her if she will, I'll stand by ready to save you...

John H. D. Watson said...

Better wear protective gear for that.

Greg Lestrade said...

You could wear your sparkly jacket. She'd be far too horrified by it to touch it, therefore you could escape.

John H. D. Watson said...

I knew it had to be good for something...

Greg Lestrade said...

so rude. Don't expect anything so good for Christmas, if that's how you treat your lovingly hand-crafted gifts from me.

Rider said...

I seem to recall ours was done in a roasting pan! Round enamel metal thing with a lid.

John H. D. Watson said...

I kept it, didn't I? I think that's the most you can expect after you made Silver Foxes disappear, probably into the bin. Unless you've taken it to work, which I hope you haven't, since Sally will undoubtedly find it.

Greg Lestrade said...

I thought you'd hidden Silver Foxes...

John H. D. Watson said...

I did not. It really wasn't you?

Greg Lestrade said...

Why would I!? I presumed you'd secreted it away for your own pleasure.

Now I think of it, Mrs Hudson had a big smile on her face around the time it disappeared...

If she's got it, then, essentially, you've supplied a pensioner with porn, you know.

John H. D. Watson said...

She supplied herself! And I'm incredibly relieved. Of all the people who could've found it, Mrs Hudson is definitely the least disturbing choice.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm not saying it was definitely her. Just it could have been.

you can ask.

"scuse me, Mrs H, did you take my book of gay old man porn?"

John H. D. Watson said...

You ask, it's your book of gay old man porn!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll ask for you.

"john's lost his book of gay old man porn. Have you seen it anywhere? He's distraught."

John H. D. Watson said...

It is not mine! You can't give presents back. It is officially, eternally yours.

Greg Lestrade said...

I like cuddly blond doctors though, not grey old men! I've yet to find a single grey old man attractive. YOU clearly have some misguided attracting to them though.

Come and warm my feet up in bed and I might just get it back for you without a whole sob story to Mrs H.

Greg Lestrade said...

Attraction...although you clearly also attract them.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's a deal.

And I don't need it back (in fact I don't want it back), I just want to know it's her that has it and not anyone else. And stop calling it gay old man porn, they're mostly your age.

Greg Lestrade said...

They aren't! And even if they are (i suppose, given you've read it and I haven't, you'd know best) I'm still a gay old man. So.

Well I can't see either of the boys wanting it. So it's Mrs Hudson, Mrs Holmes or the security.

I'll get to court and explain the need for a search warrant tomorrow...

John H. D. Watson said...

You're not old! And I don't believe you haven't read it.

You're right, of course the boys wouldn't touch it. I still prefer Mrs Hudson to the other options though.

Greg Lestrade said...

If I'm not old why do my feet get so cold when you're all lovely and warm (if is that just another reason I should have smoking as my numbrr1 regret in life?)

John H. D. Watson said...

Possibly. The running might help if we could do it more regularly. Also you've been stuck doing paperwork all day while I hiked half of London.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmmmmm.

Come on, I'll give you a rub down so you're fit to run through my dreams all night.

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you.

Greg Lestrade said...

I love you too.

Might get take away tonight. I'll see what Mycroft wants. And I've taken the Bluetooth out of your helmet for him, okay?

Tink said...

John, I'm sending you my mental love and affection from over here. Hope things feel better for you soon.

Greg, I love Christmas cake. Especially rum based Christmas cake. Essentially the stuff I've eaten is just an excuse to eat cake and get tipsy with no intervening steps >_>

Also, doing a little better today. Lots of productive coughing at least.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad you're feeling a bit better Tink.

Anyone know where Bronwyn is? She's been very quiet recently.

Tink said...

I was just thinking that actually. I may go try and hunt her down through her blog. After I sleep though... Speaking of which. Good morning Greg! G'night! Give John lots of hugs from us! (You can say the 'us' is from you, me, and Bronwyn!)

Anon Without A Name said...

Hope you're feeling a not more... settled? grounded? Better, at any rate.

Anonymous said...

Just popping up to say Bronwyn's blog hasn't been updated, but she's a teacher and this is a really busy time of year right now, so she may not be able to be online. Also, I think she said she was moving, either her classroom or her home, can't remember. (Memory like a sieve!) I can drop her a note to let her know you all are thinking of her.
