So. The meeting with Mrs Holmes yesterday. I didn't really know what to expect. I never do with her, and these little visits are always exciting. It was only the second time I've been to her office. It's quite small, extremely wood paneled (all the walls and the ceiling), and has an espresso maker that L would be wildly jealous over. It looks brand new though, and it did last time I was there too. I don't think she spends a lot of time there.
We had coffee, talked about the boys, made certain plans which will be a pleasant surprise for them and for L, I hope. And then she asked me to go and talk to...some people about some things.
This is where it gets tricky. I can't give out details in a public blog, and frankly I barely have any details to give out if I wanted to. There's a possibly accidental death involved, and a young woman who's been sent a number of...well, I can't say what, so let's call them pearls, over the past few years.
I don't know why she'd want me to look into it. I'm sure she has more qualified people. And I'm a bit worried L may die of worry. But it does sound awfully interesting.

I will...try not to actually die of worry. But I can't promise I won't worry.
I shall focus on pleasant surprises instead.
That sounds like it's a good story in the making that you'll never be able to tell. A bit sad for us in the peanut gallery, but we'll survive.
In the meantime it does sound like a very interesting way to fill your time while the boys are at school. Mrs. H may be mysterious, but she does seem very good at knowing what you need. (or maybe that should be because instead of but in that last sentence.)
Oh God. Be oh so careful John.
Bronwyn
John, that sounds very interesting, and I think your instincts will keep you safe. I hope that whatever-it-is works out well!
And I just can't get over the adorable cleft in Lestrade's chin in that picture. Too cute!
Please note the tiger striped seat covers...
Sorry, I was distracted by the wicked-cool popped collar.
Sounds like you've found something to occupy yourself, Doc. Good luck.
Didn't everyone have tiger striped seat covers?
I'm assuming he was just jealous, SH.
(It wasn't actually my car. But it was a very nice car.)
Nice photo, even despite the tiger stripes.
John, that sounds intriguing. The fact you think Lestrade will worry also implies a degree of danger, too. I'm not imagining the fact that when you say "interesting", you really mean "fun", am I? Good luck :-)
Maybe a bit fun, yeah.
Mmm. Middle name 'Danger'. Why would I worry?...
Why should you worry? Doc's got street savoir faire.
Are you even old enough to drive in that pic, Lestrade? :)
Ha, yes! Would have been...about 24? Not sure.
None of you lot ever seem to tell him he shouldn't worry about me! And I like to think I'm not a complete muppet when I'm working. So I'll reserve right to worry about him 'investigating' when he doesn't have a police radio and potentially rapid response armed backup on his side.
That's...a fair point, so I'm sorry.
Sorry, that probably sounded a bit harsher than I meant it to. But yeah, I can't pretend I won't worry at all, even though I do trust his judgement and know he won't do anything silly.
Maybe I'll bring my stab vest home for him to wear...
Yes, after all you don't wear it that often.
You could lend him the baton you don't carry too. (after all, he's less likely to find unauthorised uses for it given his innocence and all)
I think it's very appropriate to urge Danger to wear your stab vest. And also appropriate because turnaround, fair play, etc etc.
No apologies necessary; you were right. I'm sure there are lots of people around here who will worry right along with you, just as much as they do when you're out and about.
Will your vest fit him? Or do they make a smaller sized version? ;) I mean *cough* more-efficiently-packed sized.
I would think that you might need your stab vest yourself, or do you no longer feel tender?
I suppose the difference is that Danger can (if he's sensible - okay maybe not) stay in the background, whereas you can't and won't.
And no doubt we'll all worry about the pair of you.
I think you're allowed to worry about each other. It's what people in love do :-)
Of course, you're both also allowed to feel like you don't need worrying over, too :-)
BTW, Lestrade, I don't believe anyone thinks you're a muppet, complete or otherwise.
what does an incomplete muppet lack then? We know he's anatomically correct (even has spare parts!) so what could it be?
DW - he'll have to wear one of his jumpers under it if it doesn't ;) just like when you're a kid and have to wear two pairs of socks in big shoes!
Joking aside, though, he's very...muscular. And I'm sure it'll fit him fine. And tuck into his pants, to protect other important bits...
SH - a little tender, but I've a feeling a stab vest wouldn't help with that..
I'm sure Danger doesn't think he needs worrying about, no :) and hopefully he will stay in the background and not go out of his way to annoy people, like I do.
No passing around of the stab vest, you need that!
I just don't think it'll be that dangerous, compared to your job. If it were, she'd get a professional to do it, someone like Anthea or that bloke downstairs who knows 20 ways to blow things up with household cleaners.
Well, Lestrade, at least this time it's not you wearing anything questionable...you can't be held responsible for someone else's car decor!
John, I had been wondering if Mrs H had come up with a possible fix for your restlessness--sounds like I was right about that, anyway. And I hope it works, and leads to more if same if it does. Surely (and I hope this is as much comfort to L as it is for me) it doesn't involve more danger (lower case) than she feels confident you can handle, since I'm sure the last thing she wants is to risk the boys losing you!
(Although I suspect she has a high opinion of your ability to handle danger, going by the evidence. Hmmm--maybe less comfort in that than I first thought... ;))
Very curious about the surprise plans, of course!
I can borrow another one!
That bloke who Sherlock idolises....yeeeees.
...Are we allowed to ask how you know this about the bloke who has 'extensive experience' with how household cleaners aren't usually used?
Meanwhile! Could you ask Mrs. Holmes to provide John with the necessary protective equipment he might need?
After all, it's better that all of you are safe and protected when the sharp objects come out... and Greg, borrowing one assumes that you always have a partner with a spare at your back...
~A from NW
RR - I can only assume she doesn't want me coming up with anything worse on my own...
L - hmm. All right, if it'll make you feel better. No bomb proof pants though. I have to draw the line somewhere.
My vest'll come so far down your legs you won't need bomb proof pants...
A from NW - there are always vests kicking about under desks in the office, yeah. But I'm sure Mrs H will provide Danger with anything he might need.
I can't believe you're all still commenting over here and not looking at the lovely pictures of Johnny boy on my blog. It's criminal.
And now for something completely different--did you have lunch with Mycroft today, or is that tomorrow?
(And of course Sherlick would find that awesome. I wonder how much demonstration of said skill with cleaners has already been demonstrated...)
A - he told me at some point, maybe when we were watching the wedding on telly? And since then Sherlock has cross examined him mercilessly about it at every opportunity.
L - I still think those pictures are unfair. You don't dress like you're in the 80s anymore, but this will always be my face!
John, I will withhold judgment on "something worse" until we find out exactly what this entails....or as much as you end up being able to tell us.
Heading over, L!
Your face is perfect. Just try to refrain from hanging food from your mouth!
Anyway, Anon from SO up there was talking about my face, no the lovely furry tiger seats.
ACK! SherlOck!! What is WRONG with this keyboard!
I did wonder whether Sherlock was aware of the presence of an explosives experts in his vicinity, and how he was reacting to that. If he's questioned the poor guy extensively, then I reckon it's a testament to the parenting skills of you two that nothing's been exploded yet.
Lestrade - I can multitask :-)
I frequently think it's something of a miracle that the house is still standing...
Still, now he has to think of the degus before any chemical experiments or explosions.
Oh, good point--I don't think they'd like loud noises. And Sherlock is taking wonderful care of them.
Okay, I think both of these comments will come out wrong, but you know me well enough by now to just roll your eyes at my phrasing and understand that I mean things in the nicest way, right?
So, first, L, that is possibly my favorite picture of you yet. Because you look half the way you describe yourself (just an ordinary boy) and half absolutely gorgeous, because there's something animating those big brown eyes and that beautiful face. I guess the closest I can come is to make an analogy - if you see a beautiful woman all dressed up fancy, with perfect makeup and an elaborate hairdo, that's one thing, but to see that same woman with no makeup and wearing just jeans and a t-shirt and still be bowled over by her beauty, that's quite another. And in that picture, L, you're like the gorgeous girl in the jeans and the scrubbed-clean face.
And John, I think I am going to worry about you. I'm an avid reader of mysteries and the set-up you've described has "femme fatale who will appeal to your protective instincts" written all over it. And it's not like your life is noteworthy for its simplicity! So, please, be careful! (It is nice to see you so excited about something you can do, though.)
And it's not like your life is noteworthy for its simplicity!
But nothing happens, innie! Says so right on the tin. Nothing except:
- meeting two fascinating, extraordinary young boys
- snagging one very foxy, caring DI
- bagpipe playing in a kilt in Scotland
- trips to forts, old prisons, museums with Things in Jars
- gaining an extended family and an internet following
- etc.
;)
Innie - having seen a photo of her, I think femme fatale may be going too far, but she does look like a sweet girl. I'd say too young to be mixed up in Mrs H's world, but in fact she can't be more than a couple of years younger than Anthea. I'll be careful though, promise.
Thanks, Innie. I mean, I think you're mad, but thanks anyway :)
Danger - 'sweet girl', huh? I shall have to keep an eye on you, given I know how strong your protective instincts are.
Ha. Well, that is just from her picture. She could turn out to be completely horrible.
Mmm. As long as you don't do anything you don't feel safe doing, or don't want to do, then I'll just...try and keep calm and carry on, I suppose.
I won't, and I'll be careful.
And remember if anything happened to me, it'd be Mrs H packing lunches and herding small children at Sherlock's next school show. I'm sure she doesn't want that any more than I do!
Fortunately, knights are no longer expected to pair up with any stray damsels they rescue. :)
Ha, John! I said that--not as well, but that was the point I was trying to make yesterday... :D
I'm seriously seriously not thinking about anything happening to you. But I do take your point that she won't be sending you to do anything too risky.
I'd also very much want you to call me if you ever felt like you needed help. Which I'm not convinced you'll do.
L - I will call you if I get in any serious trouble, I promise. Who else would I call?
RR - ha, good job too. I'm sure she has better things to do with her life, and I know I do!
I imagined Mrs H would give you some sort of bat-signal to shine and she'd come swooping in (well, her teams, anyway).
Although I think by the time you're in 'serious trouble' it'll be rather too late to call. I'd prefer it to happen considerably earlier. Or just save up anything that could be dangerous for one of my days off, so we can go together.
But I do trust you, and don't want you to feel like I'm treating you like a kid or trying to stop you do anything. So...well, that.
I think you're worrying prematurely, that's all. It might well turn out to be quite simple and straightforward.
No bat signal, but I do have her mobile number of course, which is probably just as good.
Sorry, trying not to. It's just, y'know, the first time you did anything for her you nearly got killed (and arrested) by glow in the dark hounds/murderers/mysterious gangs etc.
Did you eat anything at her office? You've probably swallowed a tracking bug.
L - so are you saying that when Danger does his knight in shining armour act it would be worth ensuring the trusty Lestallion is there to cover his back?
L - ...it does sound a bit more ominous when you put it that way.
When you put it like that, SH, yeah. The Lone Danger shouldn't ever go anywhere without Silver, right?
He doesn't need to swallow a tracking device--which wouldn't be useful for very long!--if his phone has GPS, L. Now, an implant... :D
RR - I was assuming it would be some sort of nano technology that hung on inside him until de-activated. Like a little parasite. :)
And GPS on a phone is only going to work for the three or four seconds before you're frisked and it's turned off/stamped on.
Doesn't stuff you swallow go right on through? (The doc here would know.) But true about the phone--so an implant it must be!
The Lone Danger shouldn't ever go anywhere without Silver
You guys have so many nicknames, it's hard to keep track. The Lone Danger, Dr. Hotson, Lestallion, Silver Fox, Greg the Florist, Danger/Pericolo...
I should just stick with "DW"...
I think we need a chart, DW!
L, try to bear in mind that John is a lot better than most at taking care of himself! (Not that that will keep us, me included, from fussing, but still...soldier, remember? :))
DW - you currently seem to have almost as many names as the Lone Danger and HiHo Silver.
RR - I am completely aware that John is very good at taking care of himself. However, he's even better at taking care of others, and past history proves that if taking care of others means he gets shot, or thumped, or beaten, or almost killed, he still thinks that's a fair deal. So forgive me if it doesn't exactly help, knowing all those things.
(And no, I wouldn't change him for the world, because that's the man I fell in love with - The mad bastard who takes on five armed men with no backup in the hope of saving a couple of kids he barely even knows. But the facts still stand. I'll still worry.)
As a comforter you are a complete bust, L!
We'll just have to worry all together.
(And after all, he did come out of that little brouhaha more or less in one piece--with your backup. A good thing for you both to remember!)
L - I did have backup though. I had you.
See--what I said (buried in there...)!
Whoa, whoa, wait a second... you jumped pretty fast to almost killed, there. Has this happened more than once (the Moor Incident) in your acquaintance? Or has he told you stories you haven't passed on? Or are you just thinking "Afghanistan" and projecting?
Ha, yeah, a bit of projection. Bit of thinking of him being shot a few times. Bit of him getting hurt when the people broke into the flat.
And a lot of the moors.
Hmmmmm. You had no idea what I'd do though. I could've just started crying and hidden behind a rock :)
You're both very sweet and protective.
And a lot stronger as a pair than either of you separately.
Ha, can honestly say that never even occurred to me as a possibility.
It should've :)
(I feel like I come off as very cynical sometimes. Don't mean to be. But probably am, slightly.)
Pfft.
Not tonight, darling, I'm tired. ;)
Have to wash your hair, Lestrade?
Speaking of which... So, what's the orgy story?
Orgy story? *pricks up ears*
There really is no 'orgy story'. I was attempting to answer a comment from John on one of the blogs from my phone one day, and my phone autocorrect turned 'Pfft!' into 'Orgy?', and, to this day, I have no idea how or why. I don't even know why 'orgy' was in my phone dictionary. I mean, the other day the dictionary didn't even have 'penis' in it, which is a pretty basic word! So this led to speculation about why my phone might have been taught such a word, and the general running down of my good character.
A good character that requires use of the word "penis" on your phone. ;)
You know we're kidding when we tease you, right? That we think you're a good man of strong morals and a great sense of humour? (I'm pretty confident I speak for most, if not all, of us when I say that.)
What DW said (in the 2nd paragraph there)...
hey, it might have been a medical query! (It wasn't. It was teasing Danger about piercing possibilities...)
I know, I'm only joking.
Seconding (thirding?) that sentiment :-)
Not tonight, darling, I'm tired
But I've already invited everyone! And there's catering...
Ah, well, for you I can probably pull something extra out...
You're so good to me.
Just remember, I'm an old man. There's a reason you've got Robocopper at your disposal. ;)
Oh, to be a youngster again...
Heh. Was that the something extra you were talking about then?
That would entirely depend upon your plans for my body, Doc. ;)
Are you talking about sex AGAIN? I think it's boring.
How are Mercury and Argon doing, then, Sherlock? Have you made any progress in teaching them to respond to their names yet?
Yes, Sherlock, we know. Just as glad too.
How are the degus doing?
Mercury doesn't weigh as much as Argon and now there's 10 grams difference instead of 7 grams but they're both heavier because they're still growing. I think it's because Mercury runs more on their wheel. I've got a book and I write down their weight and how much food they eat and water they drink because then you know if they're healthy.
I think they're learning their names but sometimes they just come because they want food. I'm teaching them to get in their cage when I say 'Dinner' too, when we're in my room, so they know they should get back in then.
Since they get rewarded right away with food for going back to their cage when you say "Dinner", they should learn that one pretty quickly! Their names might be a bit harder, since they get rewarded by being played with whichever name you call, but if degus can be taught their names I'm sure you'll manage teaching them.
It sounds like you are taking most excellent care of them. And Mercury getting more exercise would be a good reason Argon weighs more--it works for people so it only makes sense it would work for degus!
Yeah, except I'm now banned from shouting 'dinner' at human dinner time, because Sherlock says I'll confuse them...
Who knew Degus would take over the household?
Quite right--it WILL confuse them. They only have degu-sized brains, you know!
Who knew Degus would take over the household?
(Psst--it's not the degus, it's Sherlock. :D)
Sounds like a bad '50s scifi movie: "Day of the Degus, Part I"
This house feels like some sort of B movie, yeah.
RR - We always knew Sherlock would run the household.
Degus also dictate half our shopping list now. Does anyone like coconuts? We've got some...
Did you get them from a swallow?
Mmmmm, coconut....
(I'm guessing the degus didn't like coconut as much as they might? :))
The coconuts are for Mercury and Argon not people! You just have to eat the white bit first. It's bad for them, they just need the shells. You should eat some now.
It's bad for them, they just need the shells.
Now that is very interesting indeed. I never imagined degus eating coconut shells, but now I think about it, it makes a lot of sense taken with what I've read.
Perhaps a few coconut cakes/cookies will be in your future! (I hope someone knows how to open a coconut... :D)
This happens quite a lot..."We need sweet potatoes"...buy them, get them home, two tiny cubes go to the goos, the rest is presented back to me with a look that tells me I'm an idiot if I think two small goos can eat a big potato...
As to opening a coconut, I've always used a big hammer, RR.
Well, think about it--would you eat a sweet potato as large as your whole body?!
I've always been afraid I'd bash myself with the big hammer trying to open a coconut. (I've bashed myself--and the wall--trying to put in a nail to hand a picture, so it's a very rational worry, I'll have you know... :D)
You've not seen the amount they eat.
I thought they'd eat it over time. But they're only allowed one bit per month...
I'd use an axe, but we don't have one.
John should shoot it.
Ah, L.
But the leftovers make a nice side dish for people, don't they? (Maybe sweet potato fries?) And high in beta-carotene, too. :)
Perhaps if you put the coconuts on a folded-up rough towel they will stay in one place without needing to be held still? (Because I'd think an axe would turn the table into kindling!)
I wouldn't think shooting a coconut is the most efficient method, myself--you might not end up with any usable bits in the end.
John is not shooting anything that isn't...about to shoot him. Or you. Or Mycroft. Or do any of you deadly harm.
No innocent fruit and veg. Or anything else.
I think we can find a less drastic way, Sherlock. Sorry.
John is not shooting anything that isn't...about to shoot him. Or you. Or Mycroft. Or do any of you deadly harm.
Well, not off a shooting range, anyway.
I asked my mother, and she said opened coconuts a few times, and that before you have a go at it with a hammer (that's what she used, too) you have to make holes to get the coconut milk out or you'll have a mess.
She does not remember what she used to make the holes with, however.
Unless Sherlock was referring to an air rifle (he wasn't) or a shotgun (I think even he realises that wouldn't leave much coconut for the goos) then there aren't any shooting ranges John could use.
I've always used the sort of skewer you use to test if a cake's done, RR. Hammered it through two of the eyes, drained the milk, then used a hatchet or hammer on the rest.
Ah! We have one of those skewer things. I wouldn't have thought it would be strong enough, but if it's worked in the past it will work in the future. Sounds like you're an experienced coconut hatcher, then. :)
Let us know how it works out, please! (Mmmmmmm, fresh coconut...)
And really? Nowhere one can practice with a handgun? Very different from the US.
It's illegal to own a handgun here.
Unless, apparently, you know a certain Mrs H.
Altogether?! VERY different. (Did you know the US House of Representatives has approved a bill requiring states to honor other states' concealed weapons permits? Madness.)
Yes, altogether. Hence us not having a routinely armed police service.
*contemplating emigration*
You'd be welcome. Just remember, doesn't mean we don't have guns. We just don't have legal guns. So there's still gun crime, but much more knife crime.
:)
Bet you have fewer illegal guns, though.
Knives--a bullet might go anywhere, but a blade is almost certain to go in somewhere. Harder for one person to do as much damage, though. Six of one...
Oh yes, far fewer than lots of places.
But it does mean people rely on knives, which are freely available from every kitchen drawer in the land. So it's just a different problem - but then the whole face of crime here vs is the US is probably quite different
I really don't know. I taught a college course in criminal justice back in the day, but it was only the one semester, and mumblety years ago, so...I really don't know. But yeah, I'd guess it's pretty different.
Mmm, coconut. I was debating yesterday whether I should buy a drinking coconut from the supermarket. I was trying to envision how I'd cut the hole to get to the coconut water without severing a hand. I'm mad for coconut water. I'm sure it'd be easier to open than the older, hard-shelled variety, but I'm not convinced I could cut through without slippage and blood and trauma.
A drill maybe?
I've got a very old cake skewer - chunky, and with a ring at the top, perfect for whacking through the shell.
Someone tell me the headlines didn't just literally GLOAT over Arsenal's defeat...John, I need a hug.
RR, we've got a lot of gang problems, with gangs modelling themselves on the US gangs, but on a lesser scale.
My mom says she THINKS she used a big fat nail, after sterilizing it (using fire, not alcohol)--an old chunky cake skewer sounds safer.
I'd say what is it with gangs, but I know partly what it is with gangs--it's easier to fashion an identity as part of something (or not part of something else) than to go it alone. Much. But lesser scale is better to the extent it's actually lesser.
John just literally patted my head and said 'there there' about the football.
...
I don't know if he's taking the piss or not.
L - my father just texted me about Arsenal. I didn't know he actually knew how to text. Or owned a mobile.
More deaths by kicking/punching someone to death than in the States, and a bigger emphasis against drink/drunk driving or driving while impaired. Other than that, from what I saw/heard, the crimes seemed much like you'd find here, just substituting knives with guns (or substituting illegal guns with barely-legal guns). Drug crime, gangs, burglary, petty theft, "crimes of convenience," vandalism, etc.
Although, you're required to reverse around a corner as part of your driver's license test, which is illegal in most of the states I've been to. And it seems to be a much bigger deal to be questioned under caution (the equivalent of being given your Miranda rights) than Stateside as well. Or, maybe that was just my borough council trying to scare me?
What I had the most trouble with was police not being armed. You'll almost never see a cop without a gun in the States, but in the UK unless you're at an airport or some high-security place, you won't see one unless something's gone terribly awry. But then, I have never seen an American cop tackle someone as efficiently as I saw British cops do.
That turned into a dissertation, sorry.
I don't know if he's taking the piss or not.
Only a little.
Are you not an Arsenal fan then, John?
(*doesn't even know what sport we're discussing*)
DW--I regularly go longer than that! (I'm a bit amazed I haven't been blocked or shushed or something. I'm okay with being shushed!)
Assuming he;s neither an Gooner or a Swansea fan, does he know enough about me to know I am? Or was it just so shocking he thought he'd text you?
DW - that's probably the first time I've ever heard anything about the force being 'efficient'. :)
And no, you can't be formally questioned unless under caution here.
Here either--unless they have no interest in ever using that information in court.
The first time I saw a cop tackle a dude, it was in a muddy field, and they slid about six feet. It was wickedly impressive. It was also when I learned "Oi!" was a real thing and that cops will throw their big hats (do they have an official name, the big metal-looking ones with the badge in the middle?) at you if you attempt to run away.
...not that I was involved in the scenario. Just an innocent bystander.
Custodian Helmet, DW. But everyone just calls them helmets. And yes, they can be useful for hitting people with.
Not trying to imply anything, but you seem to be an innocent bystander a lot. ;)
L - he is, and he knows you are too. He sends his condolences.
I'd send him a manly hug and a slap on the back, and invite him out for a pint - which we could stare into in a morose silence - if it wouldn't make him feel uncomfortable.
If you're all right with morose silence punctuated by angry swearing, it'd probably work out well for both of you.
Sounds perfect.
Football, RR. Soccer, to you.
What can I say? These things just happen to me. (How often do you hear that?)
These things just happen to me.
That's always my excuse too.
It's a crap excuse for you, because, apparently, nothing happens to you...
But you did happen to me :)
Yes, as you can see from my url, my life is terribly dull.
Ha, in a good way I hope!
You can tell a lot about a man from his url.
(What's an url?)
In the very best way, of course.
hey, it's getting late for this orgy to kick off, what's going on?
Unicorn Relating Label. Tells you all about a unicorn's life.
DW - I used to wander near Parliament on a regular basis a while back, and I never got used to seeing the armed police officers there. Same thing in airports. Seeing coppers with guns makes me twitchy. Not because I don't trust them (I get much more nervous around armed police in other countries, because they all carry guns, and I can't believe that every single cop is someone I'd trust to carry a gun), but because guns make me nervous full stop.
Lestrade - there, there. Could be worse. Not by much, true... ;-p
Heh. You certainly can from yours. It's the address thingy that you type in to get to a webpage, like www.google.com.
Maybe we'd better go and wait in bed.
Uniform Resource Locator--the internet address, what you type into the address bar of your browser.
(Not as interesting as DW's definition, though!)
DW - So Danger's spent a lot of time checking out Roger Federicorn's url?
Nameless - hush.
...right. Thanks.
Wait in bed? Okay. I might be brave tonight and not wear a t-shirt.
It would be safer for you to go topless too, so you don't snag me :)
I'm sure he's been checking out your url. ;)
DW - as you know, I'm constantly on his url.
L - oh, well, if it's a matter of safety...
I'm attached to you. But I wouldn't like to become actually attached to you.
Wear a t-shirt if you want, I don't want you to be uncomfy. Just nothing with buttons/buttonholes. Call me paranoid!
DW - I thought I was a Lestallion. Like a Unicorn, just not as horny...
just not as horny...
Well, then, that can't be you.
I think I can go shirt-free for one night. Maybe even several.
Aaaaand now L is thinking of what else he can pierce above the waist...
omg, Lestrade, do your new piercings make you a studded Lestallion?!
Only if you want to. I don't want you do do anything you don't feel comfortable with, and I know you like your pjs.
You mean you lost to the Welsh?
Night night, gentlemen!
Danger, stop them picking on me and my team :(
RR, DW - quite happy to stop having things pierced now, thanks
L, I wouldn't dream of picking on your team. I don't know enough about soccer to even begin. :D
No more piercings? Sherlock is out of luck, then...unless you'd like a go, John?
I didn't say you should get more things pierced! Just that you're now a well-studded Lestallion.
Anon - In the US, most officers carry handguns that can be easily overlooked or covered with a light jacket. If you're not paying attention, their weapons don't catch the eye. In most cities, only SWAT teams carry the heavy tactical gear, which is... intimidating, to say the least.
Whenever I visit London, I have to remind myself not to twitch when I see a protective detail. The police might not be armed on a daily basis, but when they're armed... they're clearly ready for anything.

So John, did you ever foresee playing "referee" between your Lestallion and your blog followers? =D
*giggling*
Sweet dreams!

Sherlock, maybe you could come up with a code word to mean dinner, that Lestrade could yell, and then you all know what he means but the degus don't get confused.
After living in New York City for a while, I don't even blink at the troopers who are armed to their teeth around the trains. Though at this point, I can pretty much gage how bad the current threat level is by their numbers.
Quite late for this conversation, but in my family we usually use a strong corkscrew to pierce through the holes on our coconuts. (As nobody in my family drinks, its pretty much the only thing the corkscrew ever gets used for).
Good morning, all!
(Yes, I'm still awake. I watched the wrong thing before bedtime and am still all wound up. I should know better. But it's only 1:25, that's not sooo late...)
Not too late, depending what time you need to be up...
Well, I don't have to be up at any particular time--nothing fixed before my evening t'ai chi class--but that idiot construction crew have been starting in with the power tools at around 8:30 the last few weeks, right under my window. Still, I could potentially manage 6 hours yet...
Hello, 3:00 am. *scowl* DW, couldn't you have passed this along to someone that isn't me? Maybe someone unpleasant that we don't know?
Or someone unpleasant that we do know? :)
Well, I CAN think of one or two people who might fit that description now I think about it....any of them would do nicely. :)
L - I hope you had a painless night. Did Danger enjoy going shirtless and will this start a trend?
As the Boomtown Rats said "Tell me why I don't like Mondays"
4:00. *bong*
Tell me something normal and everyday, please?
Clearly I didn't give it to you...
Purim seems to be early this year? Have plans?
Also, Lestrade, why is your work week 48 hours and not just 40?
Purim is actually latish this year as last year was a leap year. Earlier than last year by about a week, thoughts is normal.
No specific plans--depends what day of the week it is. If it's not a Afriday we'll likely go to my sister for the se'udah (not Seurat, autocorrect)--the holiday meal. My nieces are very imaginative with their costumes, and everyone is sugar-high, so it's fun.
48 is better than 60.
And if I've got your insomnia, what is it you've got?
I don't know, but this is day 9 and I'm about to write a strongly-worded letter to Mr. S. Sandman...
That's your normal, everyday thing. Think about Shabbat preparations.
Also, I second SH's questions.
It was painless, and Danger didn't seem to mind. I had a bad dream (which makes me sound like I'm about 5) and clung to him a bit, but he just mumbled at me and didn't wake up, I don't think, which was good.
48 just because we work 12hr shifts, I suppose. They're not going to let us off on 36! Some forces do three 8 hour watches, earlies, lates and nights, but I prefer 12s, personally.
I had a bad dream (which makes me sound like I'm about 5)
Sorry to hear that, but good job you've got Doc around. Also, no. Makes you sound like a person who's seen some bad stuff and cares about it.
12s are good if you get three days off, yes. :D. We call our 8-jr shifts days, swings, and mids. Don't know why.
@CylenDelMar - corkscrew! I had been wondering if that would work, after reading John's drill suggestion. I don't actually own a drill, and had got a little carried away, thinking of what else I could drill if I went and bought one - to justify having bought it, you know, so it wasn't just used for coconuts. I think I'll have to try a corkscrew first, otherwise if I go buy a drill I have a feeling I'll go a little berserk with it, testing it on different things!
This was one of those that's completely out of my subconscious or something, DW. Definitely not something ive experienced! But yeah, once I'd established John was in fact snoring gently beside me, it helped a lot.
Nothing like the right person just Being There to bring you back to reality. I'm really glad you have the right person, L.
And yes, it's past 5:00 and I'm still awake. Someone will pay.
I'd have given up on sleep by now, got up and done something, RR.
And yeah, was good to get back to reality, given I'd lost him in the dream (lost as in couldn't find, not as in dead)
I'm stubborn. Sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's stupid, but it's me.
I know at least a couple of these nights I've startled awake, but I don't tend to remember dreams once I'm awake, so its hard to tell if its something real that's startled me or something I dreamed. I don't know which I would be more concerned about, so maybe not knowing is better.
RR do you at least have some tedious tasks today that will let you take a nap?
No. I have freezing cold that is partly responsible for my still being awake. But I have TIME for a nap, and really hope I get it.
I'm sorry you're (maybe) having bad dreams on top of insomnia.
Personally, I prefer the weird ones, because you can sort of sometimes figure out why you dreamt them, or if you can't you can just put it down to a vivid imagination and usually I can forget them. Whereas the ones all based on reality leave me turning over things in my head far too much.
I can usually figure out what my dreams mean, and it's all very stupid--I don't need my subconscious to nag me about things of which my conscious self is fully aware. It would be much more efficient if my dreams would at least tell me something I don't know already!
Oh, I agree with you. I meant more like "Where the gunshots I heard last night real or not?". I decided since I never heard police sirens, I'd dreamed them.
Ah, got you.
I hate being woken by a noise or something that sounds like it's in the flat. Get a massive adrenalin surge and can't sleep again for ages.
RR, i've got to fix a toilet sometime this week...does that count as mundane boring stuff to talk about? :)
Maybe the silence means she's sleeping? *hopes*
Maybe yeah--I dozed off around 6:30--before I saw your post, though, so who knows? :)
(No Way is 1-1/2 hours sufficient sleep...)
Not so much, DW. Did you manage to sleep some?
I pulled a Lestrade and gave up at 0545. My bathrooms are very clean, my homework's done, and the kitchen smells like a mix of pine and lemon. :)
Uh, American "pulled" as in "acted like" not British "pulled" as in "managed to hook up with in a pub."
Would I were so lucky...
My mother wanted to know why I didn't take a sleeping pill. (I didn't think of it. Also I hate those things.)
At least you got a lot accomplished, DW!
Oh, good lord you guys, how on earth are you still coherent enough to write? Bleah. I have the day off for MLK day today, so I'm lazing, but still was up close to normal wakeup time for a Monday
I'm sort of like you, L, that if I'm startled awake, I can't go back to sleep for the adrenaline. A tiny person with sharp elbows clambering into your bed after having nightmares about spiders will do that, as will things that sound like gunshots and most likely are.
Who said anything about coherent? I'm still running on whatever kept me awake, but I don't pretend to make sense today!
*hugs John tight* I'm tossing in a late 'I'd tell you to be careful but I know you will be' here and then just giggling over much of the rest. I've missed this.
I sleep like the dead. Once I'm down, that's it. There's even a rule in my family/friend group that if you call me at night to make me sit up and turn on the light our I will hold a conversation with you and have no memory of it at all. Once I'm asleep (and I can sleep almost anywhere) you get nothing if use fire a minimum of 6 hours.
The downside is I'm useless on less than 6.
My mother sporadically hates me for it.
Bronwyn
We've missed you too, Tink!
Bronwyn, do you give lessons? :)
