happy birthday, Mycroft!

(Look, I even capitalised your name, even though I never capitalise my subject lines because...I have no reason. But I know it bothers you to be improperly lower-cased.)

Mycroft is fifteen today.

Fifteen.

15.

That doesn't look like any smaller of a number no matter how I write it. It seems enormously older than 12, which isn't exactly an earth-shattering revelation, but I'm still astonished every time I think about it.

Mycroft, you're growing up into a wonderful, kind, thoughtful young man, and it makes me proud to know you. Happy birthday, and I hope this is a good year for you.

Actually, Mycroft probably won't see this at least until tomorrow - he's studying hard as I believe his exams begin next week. Astronomy? I think it's astronomy first. So there can't be any weekend birthday trips unfortunately, but we are stealing him away tonight for dinner and cake and whatever else he wants - hopefully some relaxation, since school must be pretty stressful right now. 'Something quiet' was his request via text a few hours ago. We'll do our best. Might have to go and pick him up before Sherlock gets out of school to accomplish that.

Sherlock is planning to make him this massive cake that is essentially two enormous chocolate merengues with whipped cream and berries in the middle. He wants to make it 'all by myself but Lestrade can help', which is how he likes to do his cooking these days.

Its good to see Sherlock excited about his brother's birthday and you can't go wrong with cake can you? ;-)

Enjoy your day guys and enjoy your birthday as much as you're able too Mycroft :-)

It is indeed an absolute pleasure to know you, Mycroft. You are a kind, witty, intelligent, wonderful young man.

Very much looking forward to seeing you later. I hope you have the happiest of birthdays possible, with exams looming so close.

Happy Birthday Mycroft, hope you have a good one!

Oh wow, Sherlock! It's my birthday tomorrow, I wish I had someone to make me a cake that good! I still have a mini-pav in the cupboard, perhaps I should pick myself up some berries & cream and make a little Eton Mess.

Mycroft, again - happy birthday! I hope you enjoy being 15. And good luck with your exams.

Happy birthday, Mycroft! May the coming year bring you much happiness.

Which reminds me that my brother's birthday is tomorrow, but I'm not as good a sibling as Sherlock is, as I'm not planning on baking him a cake, much less such a yummy-sounding one. (Of course, my brother lives an ocean away, so ... ;))

And an early happy birthday to you, ro!

Happy birthday Mycroft! Hope you have a good time when they "steal" you away later. Best wishes, Tina

Happy Birthday, Mycroft! I hope you have your desired quiet celebration today, and another one where you can let loose a bit after your exam results come in.

Greg Lestrade said...

We kidnapped him very quietly. Now at the allotment :)

Sherlock said...

A man was just really RUDE and I don't like him anymore.

REReader said...

This was someone you liked before, Sherlock?

pandabob said...

oh no, that's a shame Sherlock :-(

Sherlock said...

He had nice fruit bushes and we wanted to know about them but now he's just horrible and I hope his bushes die and birds and slugs eat them all

Happy Birthday, Mycroft! I hope you have/had a wonderful day and I wish you all the best for your exams.

Sherlock - sorry you ran into someone rude, that's never a nice thing, is it?

Hope you're having a good evening, gentlemen.

If he didn't want to tell you Sherlock then it must just be luck because I'm sure nice things only grow for nice people :-)

REReader said...

Oh, dear, that's not fun, Sherlock.

Well, you just leave him alone and find someone nice to tell you about fruit bushes. It's his loss, not to have you all as friends, after all!

Are you all set with Mycroft's birthday cake?

Sherlock said...

He said a word I'm not even allowed to say just to tell you what it was but it began with an f and then another word and Mycroft told me it's a not very nice word either and Lestrade almost told him off but then Mycroft actually told him off and I shot him with my bubble gun and I might poison his plants.

REReader said...

Good for you, Mycroft!

Oh, you don't want to poison the bushes, Sherlock, that might kill the birds and slugs.

Are you going home now for Mycroft's birthday dinner?

Sherlock said...

Yes my cake is brilliant and I made some of the cream go pink and swirly and there's chocolate flakes and chocolate meringues and fruit and we haven't eaten it yet but we will soon and Mycroft wants pizza which is good because he said then no one has to wash up or cook and we get more time all together.

REReader said...

That all sounds absolutely wonderful! (Mmmmm, pink cream and chocolate flakes....*hungry*)

Have a lovely evening!

pandabob said...

A very good use of the bubble gun Sherlock and well done Mycroft but sorry that you even had to tell him off :-(

The cake sounds brilliant Sherlock I hope you enjoy eating it and the pizza :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

You're not poisoning anyone's allotments, Sherlock. Especially when you've already said so in a public forum, because that's not very clever, is it?

Just concentrate on having a nice birthday-celebrating time.

And thank you, Mycroft, for dealing with that so maturely. I think what you said was...well, probably more powerful than anything I'd have come up with on the spur of the moment. And more polite.

(He basically dismissed Sherlock's very polite question by looking from me to John, who was watering our patch, saying 'f-ing poofs' and walking away from us.)

pandabob said...

what a delightful person he sounds! I'm impressed that anyone could manage a polite response to that so well done Mycroft :-)

REReader said...

*speechless* *shakes head*

Yes, birthday-celebrating sounds much the best option. Enjoy the pizza and special cake!

Sherlock said...

Mycroft was like a grown up.

REReader said...

That's impressive, isn't it, Sherlock? And a very good thing sometimes, like this time.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock was impressed at the time, and occasionally you can see he still is. But of course he's dropped back to protesting that grown ups are boring, and we should have tied the man up in his fruit netting and left him for ants and worms to eat ;)

(Not ALL grown ups. Just boring ones, he says....there's a logic there somewhere.)

Mycroft is very grown up. Far more than most fifteen year olds, who think they are, but then look back, and realise they really weren't.

REReader said...

The suggestion has a certain charm... :D

It's a rare and admirable trait, that early emotional maturity. (I have a niece who was born 40, in much the same good way--she's pre-med now.)

Greg Lestrade said...

I should say that Sherlock was also very grown up, letting Mycroft speak to the man concerned, and then walking away, without any further...comment.

Well, apart from shooting the bloke with bubbles. But...well, who can blame him?

pandabob said...

young men who can face someone saying really horrible things about two of the most important men in their lives and not lose their cool are pretty special young men and shooting bubbles at him is really not losing your cool ;-)

Was dinner nice? and the cake?

Mycroft said...

Thank you all for the birthday wishes.

Dinner was very pleasant - mainly, of course, owing to the company.

With regard to the earlier incident, it seemed the least I could do. Such rude behaviour should not be allowed to pass without comment. Particularly using such language in front of a child.

Anonymous said...

Pandabob - you are absolutely correct. I'm so impressed that both Mycroft and Sherlock dealt with the situation in the manner they did. It's a bit odd to say "congratulations", but congratulations.

The birthday cake sounds wonderful Sherlock; and Mycroft - pizza is always a good call for dinner in my books.

Enjoy!

REReader said...

Quite right.

As I recall, Mycroft, you were not entirely satisfied with your response to your last run-in with hate speech. It sounds like you've worked out an alternative more to your liking, yes?

Greg Lestrade said...

It really is a pleasure to have you around, Mycroft.

Maybe I should change the tag on my blog to 'uphill gardeners'? ;)

pandabob said...

I'm glad you've enjoyed your dinner Mycroft :-)

I hate that you have to come across people like you have today Greg but I kind of love the fact you can find the fun in it afterwards ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

It certainly wasn't the ideal birthday present.

Sherlock said...

What does that meeeeeaaaaaan?

Greg Lestrade said...

Means I probably shouldn't have had a second beer, and you should go to bed ;)

Sherlock said...

But our allotment isn't even on a hill!

I'm not tired I won't be tired all night or tomorrow.

Greg Lestrade said...

it's slang. DO NOT Google it.

You will be tired. Curl up with a book for now.

AnonyBob - if you didn't laugh you'd cry, right? No good comes of taking yourself too seriously, I don't think.

Anyway, with these boys on my side, I've got nothing to worry about from bitter old men.

Mycroft said...

You won't be able to carry a sleeping Sherlock to bed soon, Lestrade.

You'll have to employ a new tactic.

Thank you for changing your sub-heading for me, John.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sorry I forgot to do it this morning.

I'm glad you could stay the night. It's good having you here.

Greg Lestrade said...

I know! He's getting far too big. We'll have to put a stairlift in for me soon.

It is great having you here.

Anonymous said...

It remains true: if Lestrade says it, don't Google it.

I just got home, I'm really really tired, read this, and of course disobeyed Lestrade immediately, and now I've got the giggles.

You all are so awesome I can't stand it. Good night all! Happy birthday Mycroft.

Joyeux anniversaire Mycroft. I wish I had an older brother like you.

Greg Lestrade said...

AftSO - you only have yourself to blame!

Moonlit Bear - Sherlock read that and said you could have Mycroft. But when questioned a little further, decided to keep him after all ;)

pandabob said...

99 times out of 100 I love quiet blogs because it means great fun is being had somewhere :-) so I'm strongly hoping today isn't the 1 in 100 and that you've had as much fun today as me and my two have :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

We've had a great time. Had to give Mycroft back now. We don't even get him for a weekend. But he starts his exams on Wednesday and it wouldn't be fair for us to take him away from studying.

Greg Lestrade said...

Got to say it - well done Wigan. Always go for the underdog when there's not a decent team playing ;)

Anon Without A Name said...

I missed the match, but I gather it was a well-deserved win (and I'm not just saying that 'cos the noisy neighbours lost :-p). Latics fans must be very pleased :-)

Mind you, I'd quite like to go back to traditional FA Cup final, when it was held at the end of a season, with a day to itself.

Moonlit Bear said...

Um, I think you guys are talking about football (english), right?

Also, to Sherlock: You can keep him. And frankly, that is adorable, you sound like my little sister because she replied when asked if she loved my younger brother with "no, not really. actually, maybe yes." I was feeling slightly melancholic at midnight, s'all. Also I don't have an older brother, being the oldest sibling myself.
