I was expecting to be told thank you and we'll let you know in a week or two. Instead it was thank you and when can you start. Bit of a shock. I told her after 2 June, and she looked harried, but I don't see how I can start sooner. We leave for Italy at the end of this week. Which is very, very soon I suddenly realise.
She said she'd email me some information, and I have things to sign, and I should know my first shift date before we get back, assuming we have wifi there, not sure about that.
Meanwhile, I have laundry. And packing. And cleaning. And...something to confirm for tomorrow. But for now, I get to meet L and tell him the good news in person. :)

My first job after grad school I got offered at the end of the interview. Boy did that warp my perceptions of what a normal hiring process was like. Good for you though. It's nice when people recognize a good thing when it's sitting across the desk from them.

Sherlock, I was wondering--are you thinking that you might settle for an ebook reader this trip? Or are you still holding out for the real thing?
I might want a tablet. Mycroft said he could make it do lots of stuff for me.
For reading I like real books best (occupational hazard! and also I do)--but tablets are pretty great! I would definitely like to have one of those, they can do a lot of what a laptop can do but are so much more portable. And they are a lot lighter than a stack of books for traveling.

Just saw that footage ITV took this afternoon. That was... I have never seen anything like that before. I simply don't know what to make of it. Glad you're on the way home, L. Be safe, all of you in London.
Er, to provide something more upbeat to think about: one of my cats is curled up on a chair, hugging her own tail with her paws so that she can wash the tip of it. She looks heart-meltingly sweet and incredibly earnest. It's difficult to photograph a mostly-black cat except in very strong light, but I wish I had an image of this to share with people.

Mentioning your past smoking habit... turns out that smokers are four times as likely to have gray hair than nonsmokers.

Really? Well, I never knew that. I thought it was all genetic. But I'd rather not have smoked and still have brown hair, I guess.

Well there is definitely a genetic component. At least your hair is present, since one of the other effects of long time smoking is hair loss.
Huh. I have always seen both used interchangeably in the south US. Can't say for the whole of the country of course.
Dunno about hair, but so far as I know (from when I did a stint proofreading), in US publishing usage guides either "gray" or "grey" is correct, so long as usage is consistent within a given book. (Periodicals generally have a preference listed in their house style guides.)
When I was a kid I was told "Grey" was a name and "gray" was the color. But it didn't stick. I spell it whichever way I saw it last!
Speaking of jobs - my daughter had a job interview today. She should hear tomorrow, so calming thoughts for a tense mother would be appreciated.
