wimbledon

This morning started as usual - L went to work, I took Sherlock to school. Mycroft came along for the walk and seemed...unusually amused when I said I needed to do some serious cleaning that morning and he might want to shut himself in his room before I drafted him into helping. I found out why he was so amused when we got back home.

L was back as well, waiting for us...with Centre Court tickets to Wimbledon. I honestly don't know what I said. There may have been unseemly noises. And overly enthusiastic hugging.

The whole thing still seems unreal. We saw both Murray and Djokovic play - Murray won (good), Djokovic won (unfortunate). Also saw parts of a few matches out on the smaller courts, including Li Na's and Fernando Verdasco's, both of whom are going on to the quarterfinals (good! - in my opinion at least, especially Li Na). And we wandered about a lot and had strawberries and L was extremely patient while I told him basically everything I know about Wimbledon and tennis (don't worry, I don't expect you to remember it all; it was enough that you listened!).

It was just...amazing. And I am still overwhelmed and happy and so grateful to him and Mrs H both.

There were unseemly noises. But your hugging is always just perfectly enthusiastic.

And the memory of the look on your face will cheer me up for many years to come.

But really - it was all Mrs H. I didn't do anything.

You asked her about it - that's not nothing! And you listened to me ramble all day with the patience of a saint too. :)

with a bit more use of capslock I'd swear this post was written by Sherlock John ;-) you sound as excited as he does about special treats and its really nice to read :-)

I'm really glad you had fun and that you got to see lots of matches :-)

Anonybob - IT WAS AMAZING ;)

One day I'll drag you to The Emirates and get you back for the rambling in kind ;)

I can't believe Wimbledon produce a whole booklet on 'How To Queue'.

John H. D. Watson said...

Watch out, next year I'll have you camping in the queue with me. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I may draw the line at camping.

You can have Sherlock as a camping companion, I'll stay home with Mycroft - feet up, cold beer, motoGP on.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock might enjoy it, actually...

Greg Lestrade said...

He could be your secret weapon. You'd probably find the rest of the campers decided it just wasn't worth it ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha - we'd end up kicked out and roaming the streets at midnight after he set off a smoke bomb...

REReader said...

Or he'd charm everyone ahead of you into giving him their place!

Three cheers for a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious day! ;)

I've just got an image of you climbing out of your tent in the morning, stretching, blinking...and there being no one else there, apart from a bloke unlocking the gates with a loud creak, and Sherlock looting an abandoned, sagging tent.

John H. D. Watson said...

Not impossible...

Greg Lestrade said...

...I also read they wake you up at 6am if you're in a tent... You waking up in time for the tennis might be impossible ;)

I had a great day today. Thank you for explaining....pretty much everything to me. It was just lovely watching you enjoy it so much.

John H. D. Watson said...

I could do it! If only because they make you pack up. And it's hard to sleep while standing.

Thank you, love. I'm really happy you enjoyed it too. :)

Sounds like a great day! I'm so glad you guys have each other to spoil with lovely treats!

I clicked on this fully expecting the very first comment to be Sherlock expressing himself in extraordinarily loud and indignant capslock how unfair it was that he wasn't allowed to come with. I don't even know if he likes tennis, but I figured the concept of the three of you out without him would rankle.

I can't decide if I'm pleased with his patience to find I was wrong, or slightly disappointed because I'm curious if he'd have liked any part of it.

Hi, Maz! I was under the impression that Mycroft stayed home, too (he was being boring, according to Sherlock... ;)), and Sherlock is generally quite good about John and Lestrade having private time.

Which reminds me--Sherlock never had his date with you, L, did he? :)

Maz said...

Ah, okay. I must have misread. Typical of me lately. Back to lurking, then.

Greg Lestrade said...

Maz - yeah, Mycroft stayed at home (well, he went to the library, but you know, didn't come to WImbledon.) Sherlock was a bit indignant - more that he hadn't been in on the secret, really. But Mrs Hudson was a complete Godsend, and amused him above and beyond the call of duty. As well as telling him he should be gracious. (He told us - "I'm being GRACIOUS, because Mrs Hudson said I should be.")

Of course, now camping has entered the conversation he is desperate to go next year...or today. :)

Danger, radio two have a whole feature on tea. You should be listening :) bag vs. loose leaf...

REReader said...

And where did they come down on the matter? (I've never tried making loose leaf tea, it looks like a lot of extra work, but I have wondered if it really makes a difference.)

Perhaps you can distract Sherlock from camping with Unicorn Poop.

John H. D. Watson said...

I have a feeling we'll be making those very soon... Thanks!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure Sherlock will adore those, Anon.

John, can we please break the 'no time machines' rule? Go back to yesterday?

REReader said...

Bad day, L? :(

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Not work - that's fine. Family.

Anonymous said...

You know if time machines existed one would never get anything done, for keep going back and trying to do things better, least ways I know I would. Probably best if we keep ploughing on

Greg Lestrade said...

Anon, you're right.

RR - Danny, mainly.

REReader said...

I'm sorry. I wish I could help.

pandabob said...

sorry you've had a tough day Greg, I hope the evening is better than the day :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sorry, love. Do you want to talk about it? I'm afraid even with permission, it might take the boys a week or two to get a working time machine together.

Greg Lestrade said...

No, it's... well. No, I'll only get irate.

AnonyBob - the evening is, of course, much better!

Sherlock said...

Anonymous thank you for the unicorn poo recipe John says we can make it in the holidays which is ages away but it will be good. Why do American people say poop not poo?

pandabob said...

I'm glad you're evening is better Greg, you and your boys are seriously good for each other :-)

REReader said...

Ha! That is an awesome recipe, Anon! (Only going by the comments, you should replace the Disco Dust with Wilton Glitter dust or something similar, as Disco Dust is non-toxic but not actually edible. O_O)

Sherlock, I don't know why Americans say poop instead of poo--maybe because we still use the expression "to pooh-pooh" something, meaning to express contempt for or to brush aside an idea, and that would be confusing since it sounds the same? But that's just a guess.

Anonymous said...

Sherlock--I like to think it's because of a cultural dedication to palindromes. ;)

I looked in the Oxford English Dictionary, and there were references back to the 1700s for "poop" meaning either feces or flatulence, so it may be that like "gotten" the word reached the Americas and stuck around even while it became archaic in England. Or it might be a back construction from "poopoo" or "poopy" both of which were nursery slang in my childhood.

L, glad your evening improved!

John, are you watching? It's pretty exciting.

I am! I don't know whether to be impressed with Verdasco or worried about Murray...
