home again

We have beans! We had a few before. Now we have...a lot. These beans may end up on the evening news by the end of the summer. Two children crushed by massive falling bean pod, film at eleven.

Here's a site that Mycroft showed me. He says it helps him concentrate at school. And at home when Sherlock's not in the flat. It's called Coffitivity and it plays the sounds of a coffee shop at you. I'm not quite sure whether I like it or not yet.

I had a long and ridiculous argument with Murray this morning about whether it was rude of me to ask him to be my best man via text. He maintains it was. I maintain if we went around pointing out every time we were rude to each other we'd literally never do anything else. I also said I'd ask you lot - rude or no? He said yes anyway.

I don't think it was rude. I know I treat my military buddies more like siblings than friends, and that kind of relationship doesn't require "normal" politeness.

Those beans look delicious!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd wouldn't have minded if you'd proposed via text :) as long as you did it!

Small Hobbit said...

Would he have preferred it if you'd asked by blog post?

I don't know if rude is the word I'd use. It's a fairly straightforward question that (I don't think) requires a whole lot of discussion, so it's simple enough to offer via text ("want to be godfather to my kids" is one that's entirely inappropriate for text, to me, because being a godfather is a long term thing that needs to have a conversation around it).

On the other hand, maybe Murray wanted to congratulate you in person, or thank you, or perform some gesture that can't be conveyed in words alone, and you sorta denied him the chance to respond in anything but a casual way. I think that's what would bother me, if it was me. But of course I don't know Murray.

not rude at all John and you probably saved him from embarrassing himself by being over emotional really ;-)

Those beans look delicious, I'm glad your hard work on your allotment is paying off :-)

Anon Without A Name said...

Rude? Nah. Lacking an invitational beer and the ability for face-to-face mockery? Yes.

Impressive beans, btw :-)

Kestrel337 said...

Mmmm...fresh beans. Lovely. Those can be snapped, scalded, and frozen for winter. Just in case you wanted to know that.

Is he saying it was rude just to give you a hard time? I think it really depends upon the nature of the friendship and perhaps the size and formality of the event. For a wedding such as you have described wanting, and for the type of friendship it seems you guys share (his mother calls you when she doesn't hear from him, etc.) I don't think it was rude, really. But ultimately the only people who can decide are the two involved in the conversation/text exchange.

Greg Lestrade said...

Murray entirely probably would have wanted to start the stag do there and then. :)

REReader said...

Yay for piles of beans! They look really nice...I love string beans!

Eep! I definitely do not like the sounds of many people talking when I'm trying to concentrate. (Music, now, I can block out--unless it's really good music, or really bad music. :))

I'd say it's casual more than rude, the asking-via-text, nowadays. (I mean, people break up on Facebook. This isn't even in the same universe as that!)

Greg Lestrade said...

He obviously wasn't so offended that he refused :)

I think he'll make a great best man.

Murray said...

I'm not offended, I'm just saying! It's the principle of the thing.

Greg Lestrade said...

This, Murray, is why we desperately need you to keep him in line on the day. Otherwise he might do unseemly, unprincipled things ;)

Murray said...

I know! You've got to watch him all the time. I don't know if you understand the magnitude of the task ahead of you, mate.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, I don't mind watching him one bit. No worries :)

I think Anon-anon hit it right on the nose: missing "invitational beer and the ability for face-to-face mockery". Now, had the invite arrived on paper, at the doorstep, with a case of beer attached, that would have been a nice compromise.

I think that Murray's tough and will survive whatever unseemly behavior you may throw at him.

But really, why ask us when you could just consult Mycroft?

Greg Lestrade said...

Absolutely almighty thunderstorm this morning. I ended up with Sherlock and John for cuddles. Mycroft ended up with two dogs in bed with him. I think I got the better deal.

Anon Without A Name said...

I'm guessing Mycroft is thinking the same thing about himself :-)

I'm jealous of the thunderstorm though - wouldn't mind a bit of that here.

Greg Lestrade said...

don't be jealous. All it did was wake everyone up, cause running around to happen as windows were closed, and now it's gone, the sky is blue and it's getting hotter by the minute...

Greg Lestrade said...

I have a severe case of Monday. I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open.

I just woke up to find that my dad sent me a Facebook friend request overnight. I am telling myself that he was probably drunk and am trying to not panic.

Expletive deleted. Anthea doesn't have any American friends, does she?

Ella

rsf said...

Ignore it, Ella. As long as the request is pending he can't make another one, and you can leave it pending for a really really long time. Then set your FB posts to a lower privacy setting than "public", so he can't see them.

L, wish we'd gotten the thunderstorms they were promising, but at least it's cooler. Has yours helped the temperatures at all?

John, those beans look delicious. Will you be canning some of them for later, or just eating as fast as you all can?

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - I would like to think, possibly being far too charitable, that he did it as part of his process of regret. Which doesn't mean I think you should to anything but ignore (can you ban, or block people? I don't know anything about facebook), just that I hope he does regret it.

I assume that you probably have security on your facebook already, given you seem like the sensible sort! Perhaps tell your friends who you mentioned would look out for you last time? Just so they know, and are up to date with the situation. And because it might help, talking to someone.

The only contact I have with facebook is looking at young people (generally) who are in trouble of some sort and have (often) posed openly with gang colours/signs and weapons.

Thanks RSF and lestrade. My account was already as private as I could make it. I'll talk to my friends and to my boss about not giving my schedule out to anyone. I guess the thing that makes me nervous is not knowing if this is just an isolated incident, or the beginning of something. Boundaries were never his strong suit.

Also, lestrade--isn't it amazing, the number of people who record evidence of their crimes on the Internet for you to find? I just heard here about a guy who was arrested after he started commenting on *his own Wanted poster* that the local sheriffs had posted to their Facebook page.

Ella

REReader said...

Ella, L and rsf have given you the best advice already--don't respond to the invite, and reach out to your friends. I'd only add to document the invite (take a screen shot and save it), just in case. And never worry about "bothering" anyone about it!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, very busy, very hot. Ella- you can always talk to us! And now The boys are on holidays you could always ask John to bring them over, those three have a protective streak a mike wide :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I really hope it's an isolated incident, Ella. I think Facebook automatically recommends people to friend, do perhaps that's all it was. Good luck.

Greg Lestrade said...

So Facebook thinks it knows your friends better than you do?

REReader said...

Facebook thinks it knows better than you altogether!

I hear on the news here that all the UK is stopped in it's tracks, waiting for the birth of a new royal? (Or so the US media would have it... ;))

Small Hobbit said...

Never believe anything you read in the media RR!

REReader said...

How disappointing...

;D

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh SH, did no one tell you? Are you still working? All of us here have taken the day off and glued our ears to the wireless.

REReader said...

Would you believe HuffPo is live blogging it?!

Anonymous said...

One of the authors I follow on twitter has asked his followers to tweet when they find out the name of the baby to find out who the last person to hear is/to see how long it takes for everyone to find out!

Anonymous said...

That sounds about as exciting as liveblogging about a toaster. Wait. Wait. Wait.... Pop! Look, toast!

I think I would like to hide behind you and John and the dogs. Having Mycroft and Sherlock there would--I hope--make me braver. Nothing like a 7-yr-old willing to face down my dad to make me think that maybe I can do it, too. But I couldn't ask Mycroft and Sherlock to stand in front of me.

Also my phone auto-capitalizes Sherlock but not Mycroft. That seems backward.

I think Facebook automatically recommends people to friend, do perhaps that's all it was.

It does do that. That's a really good point. And makes me feel better. Thanks, John.

Stephen Fry tweeted that he guesses that it will be a baby. :D

(Ella, could you have a friend stay over for a few nights? It might help you feel a bit less spooked.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - John would protect you, Mycroft would be a voice of reason, and Sherlock would distract you with wild attempts to booby-trap your home :)

Danger, I'll be a bit late. Hope you, the boys and the dogs haven't melted.

(For anyone jealous of our thunderstorms - they led to the hottest day of the year today.)

Anon Without A Name said...

One of the few days I was glad to be stuck indoors today. Felt like walking into a sauna when I left work. Expecting thunderstorms overnight and tomorrow, can't wait.

Ella - Facebook creeps me out; someone once signed up using my email address by accident, and when I went in to delete it, it was suggesting lots of friends of friends. I'm glad you been able to get some support and good advice here (and a virtual phalanx of bodyguards).

Anonymous said...

I thought about that, RR, but now that I'm over my initial panic and thinking again, I realize it's going to take him a few days to notice--if he does--that I haven't accepted his request. Then he has to decide that I'm not going to, and then he has to decide what he's going to do about it, if anything. So whatever's going to happen isn't going to happen today or tomorrow. I'm in the same situation as I was yesterday, I guess, it's just that today my fear has a name so it feels more immediate.

I did give a heads up to my friend who helped me out last time my dad surfaced, and we have a check in system now, so if worse comes to worst I won't just vanish unnoticed. And I have time to think about what I'm going to do if he shows up (and it won't be panic, i promise you that).

Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone.

now on the way home, Danger.

John H. D. Watson said...

Good :) Missed you today.

Mycroft wants help making some sort of stuffed pasta.

Greg Lestrade said...

missed you too :)

Mycroft can have help once I've showered.

You all had a good day?

John H. D. Watson said...

Pretty good, yeah. Went swimming, ate ice cream, took the dogs to the park where they lay sulkily under a tree and refused to move... How was work?

Greg Lestrade said...

busy. bodies and post mortems and heat and one of the other DIs fell down the stairs and...well, he's now a complete write off for at least a week! So trying to sort out his stuff too.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh, that's not good. I hope he's looking after himself. Anyone I know?

Small Hobbit said...

Which presumably is going to mean extra work for you for the next week.

When I was in London yesterday I saw lots of signs saying "Beware, plain clothes policemen work in this area". I don't think it was supposed to send my thoughts in the way it did.

Greg Lestrade said...

He is being looked after by his missus. Did it at the weekend. Is now being thoroughly mocked by everyone assuming he was pissed up. I think he actually tripped over their dog. Broke his nose, two black eyes, a couple of teeth, got stitches in his forehead and fractured his skull! You've met him in passing - Paul, tall bloke, dark hair, sticks his teeth out when he smiles. (maybe not anymore...)

It's a boy, by the way, folks. Just in case any of you were waiting, glued to the news.

REReader said...

Missed it... Mazel tov, I'm sure I hope they are well and happy! (I was sort of hoping for a girl, because of the new rules of succession. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

There aren't any new rules yet. Although they've been agreed to, they aren't yet law. Lots of paperwork to do first.

Anonymous said...

Oof. I hope I never fall down the stairs like that. Have a good night, you lot, and thanks again for the support today.

-Ella

REReader said...

There aren't any new rules yet.

Really? It would have been even more interesting, then! Ah, well, maybe this will make it easier for the new rules to become law, without any foreseeable need to implement them.

Greg Lestrade said...

They're coming, it just takes a while for all the commonwealth nations to get around to passing laws or repealing old ones and sort it out. No one's against it, but it's just not as easy as saying it and it happening.

REReader said...

That's nice. (Being as I live in a country where one party will refuse to pass bills that they agree with just so the other party won't score a victory.)

Anonymous said...

There's an American TV show called the West Wing that had a line of dialogue once that the royal family could probably relate to while they sort that out: "The number of people whose permission I need before I can do whatever the hell I want..."

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - yeah, something like that!

RR - I think all of us who live in democracies suffer those sorts of politics.
